Team 1155 is very seriously considering attending but we are not final yet, when do you think that spots will fill up and we need to tell you by?

P.S post #200 for me

Team 1155 is very seriously considering attending but we are not final yet, when do you think that spots will fill up and we need to tell you by?

P.S post #200 for me
We would love to have you there! We have had teams come from the New York (145, 369) and Connecticut (716, 173) area in the past, so the trip is definitely manageable.

We still have alot of regular teams that have not signed up yet. Which means that we are more filled up than it seems. However its definitely not a panic yet. I would rather that you think carefully and make sure you are really attending before registering.

So the short answer is that you have time. We usually sell out by the first or second week of September.

Have a great summer and we hope to hear from you soon.

Can't wait for Ramp Riot! We have been going to this competition since our team formed and it is a blast every time. This event is run really really well and it is one of my favorites every year. When we asked other 1403'ers which offseason they wanted to attend, RAMP RIOT was the [loud] consensus.

For all who don't already know, running an off-season event is mind numbing, consuming, tiring, heart stopping (the list goes on).... Congratulations and thank you team 341(and all volunteers involved) for putting on such a great show every year!

I'm already looking forward to going. It was such a great time last year, with Miss Daisy lending us one of their older robots to modify for the 2005 game. This year we'll be back with an actual team number and our own robot, and it already looks like it will be another great event.

Thanks to everyone on Team 341 for everything they've done and putting on this fantastic event.

Being as I was the one of the first people over there working on Miss Daisy 2, I was introduced to a selfless team who was kind enough to lend us their robot, help fabricate the parts nessesary to make it work for the 2005 game, and also helped us during the entire RR 2005 compitition. If there is anything you guys need help with for RR 2006 this year I would be glad to help, I definately will be attending with the entire Dawgma team and we thank you for giving us the great oppurtunity last year. I hope we can do the same for another team someday too.

With 36 teams it might be a little wild, but is there a dodgeball game planned? I always wanted to see one at the regional's team socials, but no luck.

totally agree with andrew here, at IRI the dodgeball was a big hit. And I still want to give the entire east team grief for losing to the west. YooHoo! and Mr. Ostrow if you want help orginizing it I will do it for you.

I am not sure that it fits into our plans, but I will consider it.
Maybe if someone that went to IRI can PM me with details about how it was run, that would help us make a decision.

NEMO is pleased to be offering a Teambuilding Workshop at Ramp Riot this year. All mentors from any FIRST robotics program are invited to attend this free workshop. Participants will learn why it's critical to team success to involve teambuilding exercises before the build season, and will take home exercises to do with your team. Please register in advance so we know how many mentors will be attending! Contact KathieK for more info.

In addition, they are bringing new AndyMark products to display at the event. Please look for their display table in the main lobby.

Please be sure to give Andy and Mark a big welcome when you meet them at Ramp Riot on November 18th.

We are getting geared up for another great competition.

Every year we try to recreate the feeling of the regular season, for the benefit of the rookies and the teams that are trying to inspire them.

What makes Ramp Riot so much fun is the atmosphere created by YOU, the TEAMS that play here!

So we encourage you to bring that atmosphere with you!

Bring your spirit!
Bring your friends!
Bring your banners!
Bring your team buttons!
Bring it ALL!!

Lets celebrate everything that is great about FIRST! We owe it to the rookies to rock the stadium.

This will be RAGE's 3rd year in attendance at Ramp Riot. Every year so far we have had a blast. Team 341 definitely knows how to throw an event. For anyone who's first time this is to Ramp Riot, I guarantee you will have a blast. The caliber of the teams that compete is top notch, and it is overall an amazing event to attend. I have had nothing but good times so far and I am sure they won't let me down again.

We are pleased to announce that Ramp Riot will also host a double field VEX competition near the FRC arena. This competition will house anywhere from 12 to 20 teams. This competition will be a mock/practice competition for teams preparing for local regionals.

We are so excited about this new addition.

We will also maintain a kids VEX driving zone in the main lobby of the FRC competition.

Thank you to the NJ, PA, MD and DE, FVC groups for putting this amazing event together.

Yeah! I'm a little bit behind.

I'll post a schedule this weekend. Generally we have team arrival at 6:30 AM, opening ceremony at 8:45-9:15 AM. With first match at 9:15.

With 36 teams we will get in 5 rounds before playoffs. Lunch is generally at 12 Noon. We work hard to keep a pretty strict time schedule. The pace keeps the event action filled.

I'll post the official info this weekend.

After 7 years, I finally sat down to think about the meaning of Ramp Riot both for myself and the teams that attend each year. I wrote my thoughts in the introduction to the info packet, but I thought I would share them here with you. There are many reasons to hold an off-season competition, but one of the most important is to captivate those new members on each and every team that attends.
Our team feels a very personal responsibility to make this a fun experience that keeps people coming back each year. Sometimes you only get one shot to get a kid excited about FIRST! If you are attending Ramp Riot please think carefully about what is written below. Lets put on a show for the benefit of the rookies.
Thanks!

Al

Welcome to Ramp Riot 2006!
We want to thank everyone for taking part in this celebration of FIRST! What has kept Ramp Riot such a successful event has always been the quality of the participating teams. We are grateful for your attendance.
Ramp Riot started in the fall of 2000 with 8 teams in an almost empty gym. The original idea was to hold a scrimmage and train a few rookies. But the teams had such a great time that we decided to play every year.
Now in our 7th year, the goal has not changed. The principal mission of Ramp Riot is to train and inspire rookies. Even though we have grown to 36 FRC teams and 20 FVC teams, the rookies still need that spark of inspiration that will keep them in FIRST. This spark of inspiration comes from YOU!!
Keep this in your thoughts as you compete at Ramp Riot. Be strong in competition, enthusiastic in the stands and supportive in the pits. Let’s all get excited for the benefit of our new rookie members!

Ever since RAGE started going in 2004 this has definately been my favorite off season event for that reason. It has allowed our students to be revived with the FIRST spirit for the upcoming season. While in our first year competing down at Ramp Riot it was all veterans to the program attending, we still felt the spirit of the competition and event. We now have gone from a small group of 8 or so students and a few mentors to a group of approx 30 students and adults traveling from Connecticut down to Wissahickon High School for one of the best off season's there is. We now encourage all of our students to attend if they can as it definately simulates the experience of a true to life FRC event but without nearly as much stress as the real deal. It is definately a great training tool to attend offseason's like Ramp Riot and some of the other fall "Pre Season" off season events.

Definately can't wait for Ramp Riot 06'!

Wow that is a big statement considering all the stuff you have with the words "BATTLECRY" printed on it.

actully I really shouldn't talk as this will be my first ramp riot, but after this weekend I will tell you for sure ;)

Yes, There are definitely many great off-season events, some of which I want to attend someday. ( Like Battlecry, IRI, and a few others) I also love going to PARC each year because it was our first off-season competition back in 2001. I definitely don't want to compare our single day event to some others out there. I just wanted to say what Ramp Riot means to us and encourage other teams to see the same vision that we see for the event. We want every rookie leaving excited about FIRST!!

While I may have a lot of stuff with BattleCry on it, I do like Ramp Riot more, for simply the fact that I have more fun. If you want hardcore competition then BattleCry or Ramp Riot will work, but if you want hardcore competition with a lot less stress and a lot more fun then definately Ramp Riot wins out over BattleCry.
Just my $.02 though.

Hi Jon:

I appreciate your support of Ramp Riot, but would like to keep this discussion to just issues surrounding Ramp Riot. I am sure that Battlecry is awesome and actually hope to take our team there some day.

I definitely don't want to turn this thread into a discussion comparing off-season events. So lets celebrate the upcoming competition and not compare events in this thread.

Thanks for your help.

We have a DJ that will be working the event all day. He's very good and yes, he will take requests.

Also we now have a confirmed time for radio station Q-102. They will be sending out their Q-Unit to WHS and they should arrive around 1 PM and stay til about 2PM. They will be giving away t-shirts and other prizes. Look for their table after lunch!

for anyone who are not able to attend Ramp Riot.

we have a scoring system that will automatically keep you updated on what is happening at ramp riot. this is sort of like ESPN's GameCast feature. you will be able to see the all the matches, teams in the match, where the balls were scored for each alliance, robots on the ramp, and of course the final score. there are links to the rankings and playoffs. the rankings will be updated about every 10 matches hopefully. there is also a help page if you are confused at what you are looking at.

here is the link. (works best in Internet Explorer 6) http://www.team341.com/rrscores.html

currently the page refreshes every 3 seconds since we are still testing it. come Saturday it will be slowed and not as annoying.

please send feedback.

Everyone who can't go- We'll try not to have too much fun

Everyone who can go- Let's make them feel sorry for not going (in a way that would make our grandmother's proud)

I can't wait, and the rest of 1403 can't either, when they made an announcement at the end of the day reminding all members going on the trip to be at school at 5:50am(!) we got some laughs, but we'll be there they saved the best 2006 event for last, but they got some stiff competition. Brunswick Eruption, Duel on the Delaware, Monty Madness, PARC, the Championship, the Boston Regional, and the NJ Regional were all a Hoot. Then again, there is only one Riot.

I'm noticing two:

1) I hope you're on the red alliance!
2) Where are the dumpers, or the human players that can throw coast-to-coast? I remember several of the teams in these matches as dumpers--good dumpers, at that--from Duel on the Delaware, seeing only one or two balls in the corner goals just doesn't sound right.

the reason you are seeing few balls going through the goals is because we dont know that number. the program was designed to use the number of balls going through each goal, but since all those numbers are being counted by hand it is very hard for the refs to keep track of the numbers. so we are using Goals 1 and 2 to just show the correct score of the match, and the 3rd goal, for any penalties in the match (i forgot to add a function for that in).

anywas, it is a very intense competition. also check out the rankings from the first 10 matches. at http://www.team341.com/2006rankings.html

I think why red may have been doing so well is because before lunch, the blue alliance was testing the 2007 frc radios... which by the way, are currently HUGE! (twice the size of this years, may also just be the prototype!) but red did seem to be the better side of the field to be on. Just my 2 cents. :D

A couple things about Ramp Riot that the general public might be interested in:

IFI Field Tested for the first half of the day, and only for the blue alliance new radios. So, yes an update of the current radio modem like so (http://www.ifirobotics.com/radio_modem.shtml), is happening. It looks pretty cool and one can speculate that a new controller is likely to follow for 2007.
AndyMark (http://www.andymark.biz/)showed off a few products for the upcoming season:

Performance Traction Wheels

A super-duper looking 6 spoke aluminum wheel
These things just look good.

Coolie Duelies

The only way to describe these new style omni-wheels without a picture is to say... double up an omniwheel, bend it like the AndyMark Mecanums so that its angled like an omniwheel
What makes them different from normal omni-wheels is that you can adjust the tightness on each individual omni, so you can vary how much lateral movement you have, pretty nifty look for pictures.

Aluminum Omni Wheel

Pretty much an aluminum version of it's plastic molded brother (http://www.andymark.biz/plastic-omni.htm), it's about the same weight

For all of you Hint Fanatics

Dave Lavery had a nice speech on how the Mars Rover is lasting so long and is completely surprising their original estimates. So you can now you can speculate on an Endurance Style Game.
Dave also had a banana in his pocket (I didn't see it, but I sure heard stories)

Ok I'm gonna end the post the way I should end it, Thank You Miss Daisy!!!

To the FRC and FVC Teams of Ramp Riot 2006:

Thank you for attending Ramp Riot 2006 and for bringing your incredible spirit to the event. We just wanted to say that this year's Ramp Riot was the best ever and its all because of YOU!! Your graciousness on and off the field was noticed by everyone including our overworked field crew.
Your enthusiasm and hard work inspired our newest rookie members. You also inspired the kids of Episcopal Academy so much that they are going to register for FRC 2007. Their original plan was to enter in 2008, but watching you changed their minds.
56 teams from 7 states converged on Wissahickon this past weekend. The event operated 1 FRC field and 2 FVC fields simultaneously. Ramp Riot also raised 900 food cans for the Ambler Cupboard largely due to your efforts. As we approach the new season, it is important to know that this is what we can acheive when we work together. Its simply amazing.
Shortly I will send out a list of organizations that helped us pull off this amazing feat. Team 341 is certainly grateful for their help and we encourage you to write to them as well.
But until we assemble this list, I just want to say... THANK YOU to Mike Wade. This event is possible only through his kindness and dedication to FIRST. We could not do this without him!
Thank you again to everyone that attended this year!!
You are the spirit of Ramp Riot 2006!

This year's Ramp Riot was an example of how a really great event should be run. Al, Dina, Mike, Joe, Jared and their crews organized the chaos of 36 FRC teams in one little gym, and made the event run like clockwork. Thanks for hosting a terrific finale for the Aim High game!

You guys did a really nice job with the "show" part of the event, too. I liked the team introductions and think FIRST should borrow that idea at regionals. Didn't hurt to have such a colorful speaker (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/25906?) after lunch, either!

but red did seem to be the better side of the field to be on. Just my 2 cents. :D

I don't think the red advantage was due to the radio test. Neither side would have had an advantage once the test ended. However, the data appears to show that the advantage flipped to the blue side sometime around noon.

Oddly enough, they stopped testing the 2007 prototype radios after lunch.
when we took Mike Wade out for dinner he said that the reason that had to stop using the 2007 radios was because connections came unsodiered in 4 of the radios they had. They were just Pototypes and were hand soldiered, the real radios wont have that problem.

Andrew Blair
20-11-2006, 15:56
Kyles right, the actual radios are actually supposed to be smaller as well. They enter production sometime this week I believe. The problem is, the 900 mhz chip that IFI uses in the radios has become obselete, and is no longer available. Rather than go through the hassle of finding new hardware for something that may simply stop being used soon, they decided to develop their own stuff, and cut out the middle man.

The new radios are wider, though thinner than our current ones. They include mounting holes.

Personally, I wish they would have kept the old ones- I imagine they're a bit less bulky. But we'll see soon when we get the actual one soon!

Actually, the only outside light entering the venue was behind the blue goal - the main entrance doors. These went into a lobby, and outdoors was a 90 degree turn and 30 feet, plus an overhang before daylight. The light from the entrance (as seen from the gym) really did not change between morning and afternoon - but it could have been a factor - but only for teams using the camera!

Next year, I'll have to take a bunch of photos, see what really happens.

If you have great pictures of your team at Ramp Riot, please upload them on CD. I would love to steal.... errr.... I mean look at them. :D

Team 103 is putting together their monthly newsletter. We would like to include pictures from Ramp Riot, but unfortunately did not have a camera with us at the event. If anyone would be willing to let us use their pictures from the event, it would be greatly appreciated. Please e-mail me with any pictures that we could use (lea103@gmail.com). Thank you so much.
