We plan to be there. You guys put on a really fun and well run event.
It's a great opportunity for our freshmen to break our old robot.:ahh:

We have to delay signup for our 06/07 school calendar to be finalized at the end of this month.

And in Completly unrelated news, I was hoping to engage a slight rule change (keep in mind that slight is one of those objective words ;) )

Instead of this format for play

10 sec automode
40 second alliance a-offense b-defense
40 second alliance a-defense b-offense
and then
40 second free-for-all

i was thinking of somthing like this
10 second automode
2:00 Minute free-for-all

assuming Mike Wade's field can do this, and the teams compete enjoy the idea i think this would really make for some awesome matches

feel free to let me know what you think (esspecially if you are a team registered for the event)

While I don't have a dog in this fight, I will vouch for the awesomeness of the two-minute free-for-all. (Granted, we tried it with 2v2 on a smaller field, but I believe it can carry over to standard Aim High.)

This could be interesting...

Not really....

Big Mike only suggested [mind you nothing is final] this rule change because he feels like being a lazy ref so that he doesn't have to watch out for off-sides... :p

Wow, you're right. But I doubt they are testing near the Gym lol. And it will be much better than last year. (Last year, BE fell on the same date as the drama club's play)

And the school Calendar has it wrong, BE5 will be held in the gym, not the commons.

I only mention this because when we were doing Monty Madness, we were told by the school that absolutely nobody is allowed to do anything in the school while examinations were going on(our school is a test center too). I think this was a regulation put into place by College Board, so we had to pick a date that didn't conflict with SAT's.

31-08-2006, 20:37
Team 102 will be there and ready to go!!! :)

Be interesting to see how that whole SAT thing works out... be kinda loud having many of us in the gym while there are many taking SATs that day haha.

Not only is it SATs that day, it's also the Sectionals for anyone in Cross Country, so that means those people (like myself) will be pretty late getting to the competition haha*gah* Hopefully we run like 9:00am instead of 1:00pm lol. So many things on one day for some people. I wonder what else can be packed into one day for someone lol.

Wayne C.
31-08-2006, 20:59
The SATs are given upstairs in a whole different wing of the building. We wont let them bother the robotics competition too much.

Update BE5-

with 6 weeks 'til game time the team count for BE 5 has reached 26. And we still have a number of "locals" that havent committed yet.

Today 5 cases of new poof balls arrived- nice, shiny and brand new.

The food committee has the menu planned and the chefs are getting their crew in line

Big Mike is getting the field ops roster together.

And we have 70 new kids on the team looking for something to work on.....

We would like to see all of your teams come to our house. We are going to have a lot of fun. We can easily host 36 (even more) and we have inexpensive hotels in the neighborhood. Forty minutes from Newark Airport. Two miles form the NJ Turnpike- Rt 95.

Team 25 has a brand new drive team- should be interesting. We expect a great time.

Come on over'

The event is growing into a monster!

We are up to 30 teams and we have a parent group working overtime with food, fun and surprises. They've really outdone themselves this year.

Tonight I am going shopping for a lot of the little stuff for the event. I have a few "quirky" surprises for that too.

If your team still wants to come I will take up to three more registrations. But e-mail me fast.

Also Note-

we have pre-order lunch units and pre-order event shirt group order discounts that have been sent to the teams. Large groups coming to be in the crowd might consider either. E-mail me.

Jeesh Kim, did you share your appendicitis with Corey and that's why he had to go visit the hospital when we visited him this past weekend. :ahh:

Anyways, I'm on the fence as to whether or not I am going to BE as of now, but if I do I would be happy to volunteer as a ref or something seeing as I heard that 237 will unfortunately not be competing @ BE. :(

Which.. is highly unlikely.

wow what a great time.

altough i was releived that i didnt have to re-attach another wheel i wish we were in it a little longer. we lost to team the #1 seeded team with 25, 1923, and 1807. thanks to the teams who gave us sky way wheels.

we learned alot there and it really has to do with extruded aluminum. take my advice and dont use it. the connectors are horrible. its either too weak or too heavy. also another lesson learned is the igus parts are not good for drive. they crack with any kind of impact.

with these lessons learned it kind of added to the fun.

thanks to raider robotix for hosting such a nice off season event.

25, 1923, and 1807 lost in the semifinals against the 271, 293, 102 alliance.

That alliance proceeded to finals vs. 369, 222, 423.

the 271,293,102 alliance won the finals in three AMAZING, nailbitin' matches.

thanks to all teams who attended, i know i had a great time, and i hope you did too. =]

everyone played such great matches.

<deep thought>
another thing i love is the level of GP shown at off-seasons. don't get me wrong, it's not like regionals are vicious, but since the pressure's off, everyone's just a little less tense. teams were apologizing to each other left and right[often for things they didn't even do], and everyone just cooperated. it made me proud to be a part of FIRST.

I dont know what was more fun for me- watching the robots play or watching the field resetters bombard the "kids in the playpen" every time the round was over.

I am very proud of all of the team, mostly young students, who hustled all day to make sure the event flowed. We were behind the clock 50 minutes at round 4 but only 6 minutes by round 30. Our parent group really outdid themselves. Each committee worked smoothly.

I also wish to thank Corey and the field operations staff. I kept pushing Tom B. to move it along all day and between him and Kim they kept the field hopping.

And finally I wish to express our greatest gratitude to Mike Wade - our NASA guardian- who gave so much of his time and effort to allow us to have the event. Without him none of this would be possible.

Below are some of the newspaper articles out this morning. The event was on both local and statewide radio (NJ 101.5). Someday soon every school in NJ will be playing FIRST robotics.

BE was a blast

kinda of sad that this will be my last BE as a student in high school.

OK- how about this deal? You gather together a team of independent alumni from at least 5 teams from the region and together build a competition FIRST robot for next year's game in the same season/rules as the regular competition. For BE6 we will have a single "exhibition" spot for you to play as a mentor team.

Kind of Like....team 38 last year? Mike - count me in

Anyway, BE gets better and better each year, it was my first taste of FIRST, and it certainly won't be my last. I'll come back, and I'm sure most others will too. 25 you guys run this event as smooth as it gets, do it again! Oh thank you to all the volunteers, refs, and anyone else for doing a great job and helping everyone have a great experince, you guys get better at it every event! I also want to thank Mike Wade for showing and explaining to me how all the field controls work (its really really cool)

Well, BE was just amazing, you know. Every time I go to it (2nd time for me) I keep on meeting new people and all, it's just so amazing. 2 Years ago was the first time being in a robotics competition and I agree with everyone else that BE hosts REALLY GOOD events. Hopefully our team (555) will be there next year because meeting all of you is just a blast! Thanks to all the teams that participated and for team 25 and all the volunteers for making an exciting event! Cheers until the next challenge rolls in :)

Define "the region." ;)

(Seeing as how Palmetto has played host to 11, 25, 1302, and 1676, all of whom have made it to the finals at some point or another (2004 and 2006, 2005, 2004, and 2006, respectively) I think it might qualify as New Jersey Annex.)

if the former student alumni (from around the country- even better) can get together and form and actual team that can build a robot from scratch just like the high school kids teams it would be an amazing feat and worthy of a spot in BE6.

For years FIRST played rounds with a robotic vacuum cleaner called the "Placebo". An alumni robot could be worked into the rounds as a similar capacity to supplement the play of the HS kids without hurting them.
If a few of such teams existed they could be rated based on that team performance and awarded.

I see the alumni as a resource to be developed and making them into a real team can open the doors for all sorts of possibilities. FIRST offers a Chairman's Trophy for the best HS team. Why should the committment to service, learning and the quest for excellence stop when HS ends?

Little late to respond but what the heck.
Thanks to teams 1923 and 1807 for a good run in the elims.
Congrats to teams 271 293 and 102 for the big win
Also a nice job by teams 369 222 423 in the finals, you guys played very well.

I also want to spotlight an amazing team:
Team 423
They played the best defense I have seen, at BE and DOD, I cannot wait to see them at Ramp Riot. Soon as the videos of BE get cut up be sure to check them out in the finals.

the placebo is AMAZING. when I was younger, I was invited to drive it during a few matches . oh, my first start on drive team. =P

I can definitely see an alumni 'bot in the future. I know I'll build one when i'm outta HS! There's no way I'm [I]ever leaving F.I.R.S.T.

I think someone was eavesdropping on the conversation going on at my lunch table at BE, except that was about the formation of an alumni/mentor super team to go dominate IRI.

Thank you Wayne and company for another great time on and off the field.
All the organizers and volunteers were terrific of course, and the teams are always great to compete with.

The poof playpen was rather cute. It was probably my favorite game feature.

Congratulations to 271, 293, and 102 some of our favorite teams right there.
Wonderful play by 369, 222, and 423 who we are also fond of. They literally handed our head to us in our third semi-final match.
And thanks to our own alliance partners 1279 and 1302.
Sorry, we didn’t mean to lose our head at the end there! :ahh:
Thanks for the Tiki (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/25829?)!!

1862 tried to make it to BE5, but we are currently having some financial issues. :(

A little late but I had work all day Sunday. Team 1302 would like to thank 1279 and 358 for the awesome run and would also like to thank everyone else for the fun, especially 25 for hosting. See you in Trenton!
