A destroyed outdoor competition hasn't stopped us. Tune into the webfeed, brought to you which is being hosted by Team 111 Wildstang, and experience the 2006.5 game "Aim, well... kinda High!" A game which brings the field inside into a small cafeteria but holds the original tendencies. A game which brings in new features (a square, lowered center goal) as well as bringing back some old school features (full free-for-all match, 2 vs 2, king of the hill ramps). It may be a smaller field and a new game but it will hopefully pack the same amount of punch as it's predecessor.

Sorry, I forgot the d in wildstang when posting. Link has been fixed. As a note, the Real-Time Scoring for the most part is the official score. The official scorekeepers have clickers in-hand to punch in their scores (and count as well to confirm). However, the system should be within one or two clicks I'd imagine.

I am currently watching the webcast and with a shrunk field and 2 robots per team it is almost an entirely new game.
Oh man a tie! 19 to 19.
How many teams ended up showing up?
miketwalker
10-06-2006, 09:59
15 teams showed up (this is a new competition in almost every way with venue, game, etc.) One team however left yesterday, 1592, you'll see filler bots for their spot in the qualifying rounds put together yesterday (we generated the list by hand)

PARC only had 18 teams and they had an amazing normal offseason. This is cool too and very unique in its own way, but I have a question, in this game is it against the rules to drive up and over the ramp? Like to get to the other side without going though the major clog area?
I know top heavy bots are likely to tip over, and if they go too fast even non top heavy bots would tip but I mean if you slow it and go over the ramps with control you would be just fine.
Heh nevermind 168 just did it.

Time for some fun with George and Neha (the in-game announcers):
Now that we have things rolling a bit, we wanna have some fun. We'd like to have you submit little words/short phrases that the announcers will try to incorporate into their in-game matches. The wittier and more challenging, the better. We'll flow them in as we can. :)

This game will be "Mega Awesome". ;)
BTW, great job Florida First on creating this game so quickly, it is running great, and quite a bit of fun! :D

Wow, I really like the revised game! It's extremely exciting, even if it was improvised, it's a great use of that modular field.

It gets very intense, not as high scoring but it makes up for that with intense defense. Not only that this off season has the best commentary I have heard.
I like the set up of the field. It provides a new fun challenge. I find it amazing that you could come with the game so quickly and build the field all overnight.

YEAH "Yes the mercury is rising" Thank you for that. :D

Interesting idea for the field, although I must say if you could add the center goals to the sides of the fied where the ramp is would make it better, but whatever. Oh, and good luck catching those ball through the field posts ;)
Good job guys.
(I wonder if there is a fee for water removal for the carpet like there is for Tuxs......)

George and Neha say that Mercury Rising has the best posts they've ever read :-p
We spent a few hours last night working on the new design... it was really fun to have this GDC of sorts. We went through many games, some were pretty radical changes to try to make it exciting yet hold the audience. It was great being part of that experience to see how you have to take so much into consideration. I'm glad that you guys seem to enjoy it.
As for Joe Matt's post, we did look into it. However with ball flow for human players, and the fact that we would need to move the field more width-wise would cause too many problems(we have very little space for spectators and needed it to be as thin as possible. I do agree if those problems weren't in there it would've been really cool.

Man oh man, this is fun stuff. (To all the webcastites, I'm sure you're loving the view of my back.)
Teams seem to have adapted to the new format well. It seems that the trick is to just keep the balls in motion; a lot of teams are leaving a lot of balls in their corral.
I'm not sure if it's coming through on the webcast, but there is indeed a net behind each goal. They do a good job of diverting the balls down and into the ball corral, which has been repurposed nicely. (Good thing FIRST didn't send the ball counting hardware, eh?)
The real-time scoring is something to see; the entire operation is run off of a hacked USB keyboard (a Mac one, at that) connected to a laptop running some software Mike Walker wrote. The buttons the field staff use are rigged up to press a key. I like it.

What a conusing system.
Why not go with the traditional W-L-T system.

Alliance pairs:
1. 233 710 1345
2. 179 1029 1251
3. 1523 744 1902
4. 649 168 108
Any predictions?
Morgan Gillespie

1st against 2rd in the finals, first match goes to 1st alliance, second goes to 2rd, first wins in third match by 5.

1v4: 233/710/1345--there is no stopping Pink, even though 168 is easily the most dangerous team on the ramps.
2v3: 1523/744/1902--MARS is about as deadly as Pink, and a fully loaded 1902 connecting with the lower goal will give the ball counters nightmares for weeks and weeks.
If my predictions are right, the finals will be too close to call.

I have audio, and I'm hearing the play-by-play of the match, but the visual seems to be stuck on the Alliances for QF 1-1
EDIT: I just relaunched it, and now it's working fine.
