So i was thinking of a way to reduce the amount of spam on the site. What if you required a 1-2 week delay from the time you sign up to the time you can post. This will prevent the 1 time log ons for spam and also give an adjustment time for new members to read the forums and look how things are done before they post.

opinions?

It would work but might cause some problems, like lets say theres a rookie team night before ship and theres a problem they can't fix or find help for so they think and realize oh wait, there is Chief Delphi I can post something up there and maybe we will get some help. So they sign up all frantic and excited only to find out they cant post till next week.

That sounds like a good idea; I'm in favor of it, but it all depends on what Brandon thinks.

Another forum which I'm a member of does something similar. Once you register, you have limited access to only one of the forums (appropriately titled "Help for Newcomers" - which has its own mods) and then after 3 days they are given access to the rest of the forums. Two weeks sounds a bit long to me though, I would say only a couple of days at most.

people who want to spam the forum will be more than happy to wait 2 weeks, or whatever time interval you want to impose.

thats what they do all day - all year, sign up on forums and send out spam.

they are already jumping through a bunch of hoops to be able to post spam here. The two week wait is just one more hoop.

I gotta give this one a big "heck no" I get frustrated when it takes more than 30 seconds to receive an account verification e-mail. And you want to make people wait a week? If you do this, it means the terrorists are winning! :D

Carry on as usual is my vote.

I have to agree with Ken here. They're already jumping through hoops (captcha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha) and e-mail verification) and I think the waiting period would cause more harm (turn off newcomers) than good. The captcha and e-mail verification is catching a lot of them -- I'd hate to see the spam levels if those two methods of prevention weren't in place.

It's just more work, the spam isn't that bad here (or the moderators are just that good, that someone like me hasn't been seeing it) and its more hassle for legitimate users. I vote we stick with what we've got and let the moderator keep blasting.

^ blasting moderator - is that an oxymoron?

sorry - couldn't help myself....

I think the current system is fine for now. Since there aren't too many new posts a day (especially with so many users online at any given time), spammers can be easily identified and dealt with appropriately.
