I guess I am officially an East person. Dodgeball is always fun. We had a couple "stop or you're going to break the controls board!" dodgeball sessions in our shop.

Just a reminder the dodgeball is between alliance picking and the elimination rounds!!! I can schedule matches around conflicts...but not too many of them...and as of now...I'll let ya be in two rounds, until there are people wanting in that match, then theres just one that you can be in.

While I'd love to sign up for the refs vs judges match (as a ref), I don't think my arm will allow me. I can certainly duck, dip, and dodge...diving might be a bit tricky. Can I have a designated thrower??

Unless I make major improvements in my recovery over the next two weeks, I think I'll have to watch this one from the sidelines :(

Maybe I can coach the refs :ahh:

Kev

Can't wait for it..whether I'm playing or watching.

Not sure on the refs vs judges yet....if they dont want to, it wont happen. So, if it doesn't happen we have something special in store.

And the 1vs1 twist is not going to be told to anyone until dodgeball time hehe:p but it will make it more fun..

Actually, it hurts more to get hit in the face with a poof when wearing safeties than when not. The safeties dig into your face a lot harder than the poof would.

Uh so is the Midwest considered East or West? For the purposes of this match, what is the dividing line between the two? OH/PA line? Where do the Canadians fit in....they're North.

I'll put my name in for the mentors vs. students round.
I'll also put my name in the hat to face 1114.

Ok a new twist that we are adding to all the Dodgeball activities. At the end of the scheduled matches, there will be a captains choice. The two captains will be the two strongest players, determined by the refs, then they each will pick 5 other players.

East Coast Line Up-Ogre, Greg Marra, Tytus, Greg Needel, Andy Grady, Wetzel.

College Kids Line Up-Ricky Q, Lisa Perez, Tytus, Big Mike, Beth Sweet, David Kelly

If you wish to be in either of these, some of these people are in more then one, so you can still be added.

I'd recommend safety glasses - no head shots allowed does not mean there won't be any....

As a relatively adept proponent of caught dodge ball outs (back in the day [in sixth grade gym], I was the only one left on my team against 10+ opposing players. I kept rolling back dodge balls across the line and let them throw at me until I caught enough to take them all down - greatest dodge ball comeback ever!), I question the inclusion of the "no caught ball outs" rule. I understand the "caught balls do not return players to the field" rule (matches would take a lot longer to decide), but yeah. What is the rationalization behind this rule? I demand an explanation!!!!! :p

I'd presume, at the very least, that catching a ball does not count as a hit, and the player is still in the game. What say the IADI?

At the past dodgeball event we held, we found the caught ball rule to be not used in the right way. But, that was like 20 vs 20 dodgeball. I am considering revoking that rule and letting the caught ball bring one player back in. If we do that, there will be a line t he people who get out will go into, then if a ball is caught they go back into the game in the order that they came out.

The safety glasses rule, one that I have played back and forth on. I have found them to cause more pain then they are worth. I have been nailed in the eye by a POOF ball quite a few times in the 45 vs 45T matches we had during build season. It hurt more when I got hit with them on, I believe someone else in this thread also pointed that out. The safety glasses are optional though, just be award that they may cause an extra sting when hit.

The bottom of my right eye was grazed by a Poof ball that blindsided me during an informal game. I closed my eye in time and wasn't injured, but it felt bad when it happened. I considered myself lucky. I'd rather deal with any peripheral stings the glasses would cause to my face after a hit than experience a direct eye injury as a result of not wearing them. People can whip these Poof balls pretty durned fast.

Jeff Rodriguez
14-07-2006, 15:46
I'm going to make a crazy guess but, I'd say that people's catching skills are going to be stronger than their throwing skills. If catching a ball does not eliminate the thrower than it puts more emphasis on throwing and will make a more exciting game. Who doesn't like to see balls whizzing through the air?

Ryan Dognaux
14-07-2006, 15:51
Personally, I don't think safety glasses will be needed for a game of poof ball dodgeball. Maybe if we were using the 5 pt balls from 04, those things hurt. I'm just ready to play some dodgeball, let's do this.

Travis Hoffman
14-07-2006, 16:07
Who doesn't like to see balls whizzing through the air?

Those who don't possess strong throwing arms, as they have now primarily become defenseless targets and not much else. C'mon, give Karthik a break already.

I like the compromise of catching != out if instead catching returns a team player. The result will probably be longer games, and that just means more Poof balls whizzing through the air - more fun for everyone. Otherwise you could see a lot of quick bloodbaths - I guess it depends on the schedule Kyle is putting together and the amount of time he has to get everything in.

So no head shots eh?

Does that mean if I deflect an incoming shot with my head, then the person who threw it is out? This aught be good.

The big suprise today was David Kelly surviving as long as he did and getting his team back in. I think thats the most excercise he's had in probably his entire lifetime. Also, how did Big Mike make it to the end of every match he was involved in, he was the biggest target out there?

Dont get me wrong I'm not trying to bash anyone or sound angry just here to point out a problem with the dodge ball system---

I was very disappointed (note not angry, disappointed) in how poorly organized the dodge ball games were organized...I was one of the people who had signed up for 2 matches on Chief Delphi. Due to complications i was unable to make my first match that i signed up for but regardless i was there for the second match i signed up for...When they chose the people for that match they never called out the peoples names who had signed up for the HS vs College match and i was one of the people who had signed up...due to some other circumstances i was able to get in on the action because a friend got confused. I realize that many people who dont use CD would have not gotten to play due to this but there should have been matches for people who didnt pre-register. I am sure that i am not the only person who didnt get to play in their matches that they signed up for because of the disorganization.
Again i am not angry but just thought that the organizers should know how i felt about how it was handled

I will, the webcast wasn't of the greatest quality, and I want to see the Pink Petunias in action!
But for now you can see Corey, Anthony, and some other team 25 members in the background of this pic of Copioli (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/25297?)

I can personally tell you, that your statement about not being called is wrong. I remember calling your name out to get to the field probably 5 times. Since we had very little time(they cut the overall dodgeball time short by 15-20 minutes so they could get the elimination rounds started right at 1PM) some sacrifices had to be made.

I think Kyle did an excellent job organizing and running this considering the lack of man power helping him and the time shortage.

I was hoping it was updated to be for dodgeball this year at IRI with the 40" balls...

Now...THAT would be something to see!!

NO!!!!! Let's just say that we have had some trial runs with this. It always gets real nasty after some time of play.

I recommend trackball surfing (aka belly sliding) as a less violent alternative. Why should Andy Baker have all the fun?

If I get a chance, I'll try it at Boilermaker. :D

I'll take anybody in trackball-balancing. I'm a champion.

I could imagine that, especially since we've done something like that on our team already.

Responding to boiler, I think I can easily beat you. As long as you don't kick the blasted ball when I'm on it, or take it out from under me.

If anyone has an idea of a game that could be played at IRI on the field with out altering it, let me know and I'll worry about the details of getting it approved and such for IRI.

Some ideas I've had...

trackball race, kind of like the egg in the spoon race, except you just roll the ball around, while not losing control (aka hitting the walls)
divided dodge ball, field cut in half, no cross court hits, just head on, good dodge ballI know, they kind of suck and aren't that fun, but give me some suggestions and I will try to get it passed for IRI.

trackball bowling is probably out of the question isn't it... unless we used mentors for pins? :)
