I kno KoKo Ed and Ellery and Cormier all have been anticipating the fabled team 2000!!! I do believe it will come this year seeing the pace FIRST is growing at. Where will this team be from? What will there name be? What regionals will they go to? My guess is these questions will be answered this FIRST season.
Goober!!!

Even if this doesn't happen this year it is likely that team 2008 will be in 2008. As far as team 2000 goes I am not sure about 2007 I would put my money on 08 but then again FIRST doesn't use all the numbers so you never know.

We need fewer than 70 new teams to reach 2000. It will happen this year.

There was a 1977 at Championship this year, so at most, we only need 23 teams

And with the amount of teams that usually join each year, there is no reason to believe it's not taken.

Not only is it team 2007, in the year 2007, it also shares its name with a certain class at MIT. (with an extra period of course)

Sorry Alex. Team 2000 is from Clearwater, Florida. They are registered for the 2007 Flordia Regional. Team 1998 is from Michigan though, you were close (although the only competition they're signed up for so far is Detroit).

It'd be a shame for 2000 to fall out of use so quickly. I've noticed a handful of other teams that appear to be registered twice -- once with their old number and again with a newly issued number.

Sure enough, there's a team 2007 (http://www.usfirst.org/frc/map/index.lasso?page=teaminfo&team=2007) this year. They're from Georgia, and not signed up for any events so far...

2001 (http://www.usfirst.org/frc/map/index.lasso?page=teaminfo&team=2001) , now thats a number I'd love to have. You could call your team Space Odyssey or just Odyssey, that'd be awesome.
I'm surprised no one wants to be team 1992 (http://www.usfirst.org/frc/map/index.lasso?page=teaminfo&team=1992).
On a side note 318 teams (http://www.usfirst.org/frc/map/index.lasso?page=area_teamlist&area=) so far.

It happened 2 or 3 years ago with Emery Collegiate Institute in Toronto. They started off with the Emery Iron Eagles (1219, which is still in existence today) and about a year or so later the Diamond Eagles (their exact number has escaped me, something in the 1300's) came into existence. I believe it was 2004. They split into girls and boys teams due to the sheer numbers coming out to their meetings!

Sooo... Since both teams should have equal resources, being from the same school and area... This should settle the long going dispute on who is better at this whole robot thing, girls or boys? Which team is doing better as of now?

Im pretty sure that happened in New Jersey this year as well. The team from Montclair split the same way, one team for boys, one team for girls.

It might be just another error, like 1368/2000, where 340 accidentally registered as a rookie.
We just registered for this year a few hours ago. We are team 2021.

My school was supposed to be its own rookie team last year. But we ran into a lack of money and mentors. So we joined a somewhat local team, 1132. And now this year are school will have its own team (2021) and they will have there team (1132).

Huh, interesting. It took ~ 10 years for FIRST to get to 1000, and about 4 years to breach the 2000 mark. Can we expect to see 3000 in 2009?

I think it'll slow down a little.
FIRST is very expensive and there is only so many sponsors. And now that Vex is an option I bet schools will look into that if they can't line up good financial backing.

Something will expand forever to a point. There is a point where it cant get bigger because of people funds etc. I dont think that there will be that many teams in 09. It would be interesting to see what happens if there is.

It is not an error, but 1988 is not the final number...

So you guys do know that although not every number is used, every number HAS been used, so we would be embarking our 2007th FIRST team...That in its self is a success. So dont worry, we'll hit 2000 teams sooner or later. Either in the next three or four years at the rate FIRST is growing.
Pavan.
The thing about FIRST is that it really takes a few years (on average) to get a team really sustainable to the point where the kids go on to college and want to start teams or others in the community want teams at the other schools. So I bet there is a max growth rate which is probably close to what we have now. Keep in mind also, not every team number is in use, getting to team 3000 is moot if there are still only 1000-1500 teams.

Now there are 637 teams (http://www.usfirst.org/frc/map/index.lasso?page=area_teamlist&area=) with four regionals already "full" ad FIRST probably only halfway full. It will be interesting to see how teams find a second and even a third regional though the big regionals still have space.

Currently at 813 teams with 8 full Regionals. May be tough to register for your favorite second regional!
I believe that this is the year we get at least one team from each of the 50 states. Some teams have dropped and there are some new teams, and maybe some still have yet to register.
Nebraska now has its first ever FIRST team, 2044.
Utah only has rookie 2059 so far.
Still waiting on a team from New Mexico to come back. Come on New Mexico!

520 rookie teams would be unprecedented growth. I think something near 2200 may be more practical, if even that high.
1164 is registered in New Mexico! As far as I can tell (I didn't check all 50 states) there is now at least 1 team from each of the 50 United States.

I had noticed that too when I looked at the page, but that was the big news at the Philly Regional last year. Many members from team 1874 traveled from Ghana to get their first taste of FIRST, and will hopefully be attending the Philly regional this year. Also as a side note, I know that team 433 is currently gathering spare parts for team 1874, so if you have anything to help out the Ghanaians, try to contact the Firebirds and see what you can do.

It is interesting to see how quickly the number of competing teams is going up compared to the number of regionals. As more and more teams are started in areas that are already dense, it feels like the regionals are filling up much more rapidly than they have in the past. At the current rate of growth, we are going to need more regionals (or superregionals) each year. It's pretty exciting.

Ditto. They're already up to 2116 (which is attending the Wisconsin Regional). What's gonna become really interesting is that teams sponsored by rival SERVICE academies are competing at Jerseys. You have 165 (Navy) against 2114 (Coast Guard), which will be pretty interesting to watch.
But where do you think the superregionals will be?
I'm putting bets in at Chesapeake, even though I'm predicting this super-region will be at College Park or in DC. (If not at Comcast Center, probably the old Cole Field House which is big enough to have two or even three or four fields.) The other one (on the east coast) will be in Toronto; as that is already a super-regional.
Maybe there'll be one in Hartford sometime soon, but I'm not sure.
Either way, superregional registration should be just like the regional registration except they come in weeks where usually the smallest regional occur.
Any bets?
