So. Who's going to the regional in FIRST that needs air conditioning for its outdoor pits?

So. Who's going to the regional in FIRST that needs air conditioning for its outdoor pits?
I didn't think the pits where that bad last year, minus the lack of power on what was it Friday morning? Maybe just more openings in the tent.

From what my team mates tell me, if you were out side last year, you should be inside this year. And since we were outside this year, that should be a problem.

And being across from Pink in the outdoor pits is like :ahh:. (no offence to Pink, but all that pink just glows against the white of the tarp.)

I'm kind of hoping that the social will have more teams attend this year than last year.

Note: If you see 1065 playing hacky sack, come join us. We don't bite and always enjoy some new people to play with.

Also: What do people think of referring to the regional as CFR (Central Florida Regional)? I tend to hear allot of people call it FLR but when ever I hear that I think of Finger Lakes...

You guys can guarantee we'll be there, but that's a long time from now.It may seem like a long time now, but once January comes along, it'll come up and bite you in the bott (bad robot humor :D)!

I'm kind of ecstatic about this years turn out. It seems to have allot of out of state teams signed up already.

Here's the team list:

Team 1158 from Collbran, Colorado has registered. Looking forward to completing with and against 233. Last time was the Colorado Regional.

we had a blast in colorado that year. climbing what you considered a hill, we considered a mountain and of course our kids in board shorts "snowboarding" on the tops of rubber maid containers. the florida regional will be awesome as always.

1902 will be representing again this year, the florida regional is in our backyard so we'll be ready compete. Something like 3/4 of our mentors either currently attend UCF or have attended UCF, and about 30% of our graduating seniors from last year attend there, so hopefully we're looking to bring home the bacon!

Team 245's going for the first time this year. For the last few years we've gone to Sacramento, but we've decided to switch it up. It'll be nice to go out of robotics the same way I came in (I went to Nationals [as it was called way back when] with my brother when I was in 4th grade, seems a fitting regional for my senior year...)

Also, I hope there are some people down there who play Ultimate Frisbee (the best sport ever, I might add), as Team 245 officially challenges any team man (or woman) enough to face us!

1523 will be there! Expect more little green men to be scattered around ;)

Anyone interested in a Xbox tourney? We have quite a bit of experience running Cat-5 cables all over hotels (a favorite line of those involved has become "We need more lamps!"; the lamps had two outlets on the front, and were daisy-chained to create a last minute power strip. We had roughly 7 lamps in one room by the end of the night. Also, running cable five stories straight up was interesting... :p). A local LAN Center recently opened (Internet MAYhem (http://www.internetmayhem.com/)) and if something similar is available near the arena it would be perfect! It's never too early to start scouting out this sort of thing ;).

I've never really seen Ultimate Frisbee at the Florida regional, but keep in mind last year was my first year and I was a bit preoccupied with hacky sack.

It looks like there is going to be another regional / FCAT conflict, can anyone confirm?

WE'RE IN!!!!!

The principal at Palm Beach Central High School came up with the $6000 entry fee, and team 1889 will be competing at Central Florida. I've been working with the team for a little over 2 months now and I'm pretty excited about it - a good group of kids and a dedicated / motivated teacher in the engineering academy.

Time to design that "(pink) powdercoat painted, precision machined, fully automatic mega-arm" :)

There is a resturant in student union (I'm not even going to attempt to spell it) who has a DDR machine, I went there a few months back, and unless they have fixed it the left pad's right arrow is broken. So for DDR, I suppose it is bring your own pads.

Depending on when you arrive/leave, I could possibly arrange for the beach to come to you :). I think it's great that you travel as far as you do to participate in this regional. It's much appreciated.

I think it was 42 officially when registration opened and it filled up; website says 47 now. When I spoke with the regional chairman a few weeks ago he said they had 10 spots held for rookie teams and there were only 4 teams on the wait list at that time. I think last year there were 51 in attendance, so given all that I would guess 52 is the "real" number.

Hello, I am Joe from team 703 in Saginaw, Michigan. For spring break I get the pleasure of coming to Orlando for a week. I found out last night that the Florida Regional is in the same time frame that I will be there.

Is there any teams that will be attending this regional who are willing to adopt a teammate (me) for a day. I am pretty sure my other Non-FIRST friends will find other things to do then watch robots, but I for one am always up for watching a FIRST event. I am looking forward to seeing you all there.

if you can only pick one team, i'm going to be pretty egotistical here, i reserve 179If a FF FLorida Regional League is created, you won't be able to pick or reserve teams until 1) everyone who wants to participate has expressed interest, and 2) a draft system/order has been created. So hold your horses - wait until someone starts the thread and it is your turn to pick before picking. :D

We can go to the bowling alley however.......they have leagues until 10pm. could make for a late night but I will double check

Once again team 1390 plans to serve as a welcoming committee for out of state teams.

Team 1390 would like to welcome all out of state FIRST teams to our home. We are forming a welcoming committee and would love to greet these teams as they are getting off of their plane/bus with a warm Floridian welcome. We would like to provide these teams with information on attractions in the area including theme park maps and brochures, dining information, directions, traditional Florida hotspots (air-boat rides and gator hunting), and whatever else information that a team would like to have to make their stay here more enjoyable. Please contact me (bonzack@aol.com) if your team would like us to greet you and let us know what attractions you are interested in and we'll gather information for you. This will also give our teams' students a chance to socialize and make new friends before the hectic and chaos of a robotics competition. We welcome all out-of-staters, please let us know what we can do to help make your stay in Orlando more enjoyable!

I tuned into the webcast at around 3:30, and caught the last hour and a half of it. I did get to see teams 179, 79, and 1902 play, but I was also impressed by team 1065. In both rounds of their last practice match, the two robots on their alliance (1902 and 386 if I recall correctly) were able to climb their ramps. Team 386 was also able to score in autonomous during the last practice match.

From 6.2.2 of The Arena section

The end of the leg has a retaining plate, known as the SPIDER FOOT, made of a 10-inch diameter disk of diamond plate aluminum. The SPIDER FOOT prevents GAME PIECES from falling off once they are placed on the SPIDER LEG.

Calling the matches today was a fun experience. I'm impressed with the performance of many of the robots that came to compete for practice matches.

That's what I was wondering. I think the robot inspections are very very strict at UCF.

why are the refs using tape measures before the matches? haven't the robots been inspected?

Sometimes the robots were not completely within their starting dimensions. In other regionals, they let it go because normally there is no advantage and they are pretty close in their starting dimensions. Actually, I think most robots usually are.

Rob
09-03-2007, 11:04
At BAE ringers that had another on the floor under them were counted. In my opinion, that is the correct way to score these, otherwise you can get free spoilers just by pushing any tube on the floor under ones scored on the bottom row.

Keep in mind this is my opinion based on observations, I do not have the rules in front of me right now.

This is certainly something that should be asked about during the The drivers meeting with the refs.

Good luck

HANGING: a GAME PIECE is considered HANGING if its’ weight is fully supported by a SPIDER
LEG and it has been released by the POSSESSING ROBOT. A GAME PIECE is not considered
HANGING if it is supported by the SPIDER FOOT

Technically, it cannot be considered to be HANGING and therefore it should not count.

True...

Does seem a little ridiculous though...a team can score a ringer, but then have it disallowed because another tube was pushed up against it, even though clearly it had been scored? Is so, I hope teams figure out that there are still two other rows to score on. :)

179 is also doing pretty well from the few matches I've been able to watch. They seem to be able to score 3-4 a match, then get back to deploy their ramps.
1902s biggest advantage is the keepers I think (they have had the most impressive autonomous I've seen at UCF), but they are getting harassed a lot during driver control. When left alone they are brutal.
I think 79 became the first team to remove a spoiler as well.

Its sad to here about 233's robot, they always have a strong robot I hope they can get it working. 79 has an impressive robot, but they always do.

On a different note. The stuff I am hearing about next years regional is really exciting and I can’t wait to start volunteering again.

Good luck to all teams tomorrow hopefully I can stop by after I get off work.

This is the transcript of the matches that our scout was able to compile. It has a few matches missing around lunch and it dosn't have the first one. Also, if there are any inaccuracies, please post them. Enjoy.

Here's my update:
yes 79 is awesome. I haven't seen a lot of matches, but our scouting has them as best scorer. 1902, 179, 56, 1523 are all averaging 4+ per match. there are another 7 or so 2-3 cappers. Then you have about 6 good ramps - 312, 180, 179, 1345, 69, 86. But another 12 or so that don't work. We've tried to climb 2 ramps today that didn't work. Our I/R sensor we use for autonomous won't work in the halogen lights. We score every single time at the practice field. But it refuses to work on the playing field. So frustrating.... 386, and 1902 have great autonomous. It think there might be more, but I haven't seen them. Pinks arm was tearing itself apart, but they had somone rush new parts to them and got back up and running. I guarantee they will be in finals and do very well. They were just unlucky with 744 chasing them their 1 match today, and no other partners. We're still seeing repetitive match alliances. We've got quite a few w/ and against 665 and 435. But I've seen much worse, I think 1902 had 5 or 6 matches against 1 team (glad it wasn't us). We've had bad luck with pairings etc. but hopefully we can get in a good alliance in the end. It's going to be a rough set of finals in Florida, ramps and ringers everywhere, don't miss it!
As far as the 3 on 1's, I can tell you that our inspection took over an HOUR! I can't fathom how they planned to get 51 inspections done with that level of detail. It was brutal..... What they were doing measuring bots on the field and such, I don't know. Maybe they finaly backed off on the inspection requirements to get the bulk through and then followed up on the field. I know this morning they still had 28 inspections to go....

Yeah, our arm was experiencing some unexpected/unwanted problems right after our first qualifying match on thursday. Essentially, the outer tower was being crunched in from rotating it, due to the inertia of the manipulator once the tower stopped moving (its a bit heavier than we expected...). Finally, after lunch today, we were able to fix it so we should running well tomorrow. Drivers are starting to get the hang of it as well. As a side note, thanks to all the teams out there that offered to help throughout the morning while we were working to get our bot up and running! See y'all tomorrow and good luck!

Brenton (above) pretty much summed up everything about our little robot issues. Worry not, tomorrow we should be back in business, with legal bumpers and fitting within the 72 inch box or whatever and all of this other nonsense that occured. It might just be me, but it seems like the judges like to judge us hard because we're a veteran team.

On another note, whats up with the ref sometimes removing a keeper from a robot and sometimes not? In one match we got the keeper hung up on the flag from our robot after autonomous period had ended... I thought they had to remove it at the end of autonomous, because I had seen that at a webcast from last week. But I didn't see it happen at UCF so I figured the rule had changed... but no, because a few hours later, I saw a ref run onto the field after autonomous and remove a keeper from a robot. I'm not yelling at the refs or anything... I'd just like to know what's up?

Oh, and no more tinted safety glasses? I knew the reflective ones that are dark like sunglasses were illegal (someone on my team got yelled at for them on Thursday) but today a lot of us were yelled at because our lenses are tinted pink. If I recall correctly, the rule only states that the dark ones arent allowed, but the tinted ones are ok. So why the rule change? Its rather inconvenient, since our team already spent a ton of money to buy enough safety glasses so that everyone on the team would have some. If they were going to change things, this would have been nice to know at Kickoff. But thats just me.

Good luck to everyone tomorrow!

From Team update #5
FIRST requires all teams to bring and supply, for each competition, ANSI approved
non-shaded safety glasses for its team members, mentors, and guests.
For our purposes, amber lenses that allow for better/brighter vision are considered
tinted, not shaded, and their use is allowed at FIRST events. Sunglasses or deeply
shaded safety glasses used in our indoor event environment are not acceptable.
Depending on how you interpret this, specifically the last sentence, it can either make the pink safety glasses legal or illegal. The amber bit suggest that they'd be illegal due to them being neither clear nor amber, but the last sentence suggest they'd be legal because it is not a dark shading, unfortunately it is not clear which is the correct interpretation. Personally, I'd lean towards the illegal bit, since there is a very noticeable improvement in vision when using amber safety glasses esp. in low light condiditons, I can't imagine pink safety glasses offer the same benefits. (although I've never worn pink safety glasses)

the match i saw, right after lunch, 233 was pretty much shut down by 744, they were able to get one or two ringers on i think, and then were simply pushed around

i heard through the grapevine that 744 changed their wheels to face us. made me feel a little better :)

From what I have seen, the keeper is only removed from a robot when it could easily be scored without the team wanting to deliberately score it. For example, if a robot is holding a keeper directly above a spider leg but never let go during the auto mode, the refs will remove it. The reason for this is, if the keeper falls onto a spider leg after the auto mode is complete, the way the match is played and the outcome could be drastically different.

We are changing the tires on our center wheels which should give us more traction. I guess we'll find out tomorrow. I think we are up against Team 744 two more times.

At BAE the head ref removed the keeper every time, just look at the first match (where he kinda destroyed a keeper :p). I agree that consistency would be nice sometimes.

most teams were either not ready or procrastinated to do them the morning of (today) and it was crazy

idk what was up with pink, but i think alot of the teams falling into that area the 2-4's 1-5's 1-4's, 2-3's, all got alot of talking to do.

(how does 233 have 8 matches, if they are 1-5, and someone stated above, that they got two more matches, this =8 there are 68 Qualification matches, so with 51 teams (each team would go around twice every 17 matches). so yes, that does =8, but my team only has 7 matches as far as what i saw on the page,)

if this is correct, my current team that im mentoring can end up 4-4. kool

like i said, alot of the teams had trouble inspecting, therefore most of the morning matches were empty, and thats why the standings are deceiving. so for those teams that are making their alliance lists tonight, wait till tomorrow and you guys will see alot of more talent (or at least i hope).

btw speaking of inspections, the match 1694 was up with 1062 and 179, i think match 48, the inspector apparently forgot to sign the paper and give it to the ref. therefore we couldn't play that match, which we could have won by 179 climbing up our ramp...

...is there going on with the volunteering, Barry, someone answer me please,

(btw, for those of you who wern't there afterwards, Barry got his hair dyed orange, thanks to team 1902)

Wow, that was fun to watch the competition today on the webcast! Which bot had it's arm taken out? I missed the number of it...:ahh:

Looking great everyone! Tomorrow's gonna be awesome, and I think I'll actually wake up before noon because FIRST is just that exciting! ^_^

That was 1889 and 1390 getting tangled up together. 1390 was playing counter defense against 1889's advances on team 69. 1889 did have a ringer in possession. 1889's arm got caught in 1390's forklift, the robots tried to untangle themselves, and 1889 fell over snapping their arm off in the process. 1390 had to get rid of the 1889's blue ringer still attached to 1889's arm before climbing up 69's ramp.

It was a close call, I think a penalty could have gone either way. It was definitely not intentional to tip, nor break off 1889's arm. The 1390 students immediately asked 1889 if there was anything we could do to help repair the arm, but they said it was an easy fix and not to worry about it.

I know the match list is generated randomly, but how is it that we'll be against 744 for a total of 4 times? Twice yesterday and twice today? I don't think we're the only ones either; there seem to be alot of repetitive matches.

I've been into this for one year, but also I noticed that this year's regional has a lot more no shows than last year. And I don't think rankings always mean anything anyway because it usually conflicts with scouting data....

Also, there are way more penalties this year. Like every other match has a penalty on at least one side. Is this unusual as compared to last year or did I just not notice last year?

Luckyfish05
10-03-2007, 13:57
In my cutting in and out webcast, I believe that I heard them say something about the radios not working correctly.

Bongle
10-03-2007, 14:20
Intermittent radio problems are affecting both alliances. They decided to continue, and told teams to just assume that it is part of the conditions to play under, since it (apparently) affects everyone fairly.

They also made an announcement to not bury your radio in your robot.

I'm thinking it's pretty funny that 342, 79, and 1027 all have blue bumpers and trim despite being on the red alliance.

Luckyfish05
10-03-2007, 14:30
Yuck I would not want to be playing under those conditions. It's very frustrating. Bongle, we've got two red shades (pink is just red with white in it) on the blue alliance. It's all just kinda ironic, I think they should just switch sides so we know what alliance they are on and we don't have to use the flags anymore.

Dan Petrovic

Finals: 108 179 1902 v 1251 86 1270

That last semi final match was really close, with the #2 alliance pulling out the win 10-8 over 233, 180 and 1889.

EDIT: The 1902, 179, 386 [replacement for 108] alliance just won the first match 16-4.

Also does anyone know why the number four alliance is red instead of blue? I always thought that the higher seeded alliance was red...

First of all, many kudos to 1270, 86, and 1251!

The Florida Regional for 2007 will definitely be one of my most memorable regionals. We went from being seeded DEAD LAST to getting in the #6 seeded alliance (THANK YOU S.P.A.M.!) with another amazing robot (HAZE! (thats 1889, right? Tytus dont kill me if i got it wrong...)), and then making it to the semifinals.

Yeah, the radio issue was irritating... everyone on my team was genuinely thrilled about being able to replay quarterfinal #4.

SigmaC@TS, Children of the Swamp, Exploding Bacon, and Voltage, you all were an incredible alliance to go against... after you took us out we were rooting for you the whole time! Congratulations on getting so far, in the end it was really close and either of you could have won it.

Actually, the choice was quite easy.

SPAM was looking for the best arm-only robot that was left to choose from. Watching your two qualifying matches on Friday showed us that you could do it.

After that, we were looking for a good defensive robot and we were very familiar with 1889's capabilities.

It was a blast having the chance to play with Pink, rather than against them. In all of my years with the team, I cannot recall ever having the opportuninty, either in qualifying or eliminations.

And it is always a blast to play with Gary and Tytus. What other mentors do you know who break dance during the elimination rounds?

And it is always a blast to play with Gary and Tytus. What other mentors do you know who break dance during the elimination rounds?

A scene not likely to make it to the SOAP regional archives, I'm sure, unless it comes with a parental warning.

This was a very emotional event for me, after 9 years with SPAM and working with Ty on a new and growing team. I couldn't be prouder of my friends young and old. The winners, the losers (you're all winners ;) ), and everyone in between was gracious above and beyond expectations.

Thanks to SPAM for picking us - thankfully we got our radio problems fixed (after changing out the modem, cable AND RC control) or I would have been sick for letting you down. I'll echo Warren's sentiments about Pink - never got to team with you and always wanted to. I told my teammates before alliance selection that you would be picked even though you were ranked last, because you deserve it.

Congrats to George and EB - I already told you how I feel in my extended hug after the match; we probably should have ripped off some chest hair after that. To the champions - you have alot to be proud of for your performance and behavior.

And to Krunch - keep setting the standard. We'll keep trying to reach it.

I invite your team to New Jersey regional next year to play among some of us northeast teams. Then you can judge.

I have to extend huge thanks from myself and all of 1251 for team 1270 and team 86 helping us on the road to victory. 1270, you were amazing, great scorers who held your own under the hard hits of some of the teams there. 86, you guys played some amazing D and your ramp was amazing, also, your cart's toolbox was a lifesaver in those short fix times. Altogether, we couldn't have done it without either of you and see you at nationals!!

I've been to regionals in the northeast. New York and Boston... I know a couple of years ago (way before my time) our team went to Jersey and Toronto too. We've also been out west... Denver, Washington State... We've been to a lot of different regionals. But from my experience, the northeast regionals I went to (New York 04, Boston 06) never seemed as hard as the Florida Regional (04-07), and I always wondered why it never got reputation for being a hard regional. Granted, no regional is every really easy... but Florida always seems to be very competative... we have amazing veteran and rookie teams. So, I would say from my experience, the Florida Regional is one of the hardest/most competative, and thats part of what makes it so great!

oh and ahanktcd, trust me, we all had a great time. We werent dancing the whole time for nothing... we were enjoying the competition, in spite of our little mechanical issues. :) Thanks for your concern, and we look forward to seeing you in Atlanta, along with everyone else! :)

Just wanted to say thank you to team 1902 for letting me be with them for the day. Great Job at the Regional, it was a pleasure being around you guys for the day. Good luck at future regionals.

I also want to thank team 157, The Aztecs for giving me a ride back to my hotel. Thank you all so much.

One more thing...NO MORE OUTDOOR PITS!!!

No more power outages, long bumpy walks, or freezing right in front of the AC. Believe it or not, it was often colder in the tent than it was in the arena. FIRST handled it really well and it was fun experience nonetheless...

New York is not a hard regional and neither is boston. At least this year, New Jersey was way more competitive than Florida. Other years, results vary. You will find that while many "big name" teams do not come to New Jersey, the level of competition is stiff. My only complain against New Jersey is that teams only got 7 official rounds.

I agree that Boston and New york(especially the one we went to) were extremly easy competitions with many rookie teams in comparison to other NE competitions and the FL regional, I would not go as far as to say that the NJ regional is more competitive than FL, if so, not by much, from what I hear there are alot of industry sponsored teams up there that have very efficient robots, as som1 else has already mentioned, next year is hawaii : D, 09 soudns like a good year for Jersey, our team has been wanting to go to a more competitive competition like NJ for our second regional because we ususually go to new competitions in new locations

Can't forget that 86 has had an extremely good robot for both last year and this year. 79 also always shows up with an excellent robot and Always a great Chairman's entry.

Also Team 56 from NJ was in attendance at the Florida Regional this year. That NJ team had one one of the best arms in the competition, I can see a good argument both ways.

By the way. Does anyone know any home remedies for getting your voice back?

technoL
11-03-2007, 20:43
I'm not sure about that particular match, but I do know that in many of the early matches there were quite a few teams that did not show up for their matches --either because they didn't pass inspection or they still were working on their bot. Before lunch Friday, there were a lot of 2 on 3 matches.

swamp_child
11-03-2007, 20:43
cause people were still finishing robots, probably.

still it wasnt right for them to continue since red had only 1bot and blue had 3. watch the match. i was not there for those before match 4 cause im from far away and had school.our team is entered in the Drexel university competition and no others. same in the next match except red had 2bots and blue had 3.

11-03-2007, 20:57
They are not going to hold up the matches and confuse the match schedule because teams are not ready to compete. Although there might have been a bit of a problem with the teams that could not put a robot on the field (I know about 233's story) it is vital to keep the matches moving in a timely manner, even at the sake of a whole alliance.

Nuttyman54
11-03-2007, 21:01
Matches must go on, with or without robots. Team 971 missed a number of matches last year to get our robot running (which, it never managed to do properly)

This is one of the many reasons good scouting is so important.

I know why one of the robots, 233, wasn't there. We had major structural issues with our tower which were awaiting repairs. We, like all teams in this situation, feel badly about letting our alliance partners down. The possibility of "no shows" affecting other teams is a down side of the alliance system which has been part of FIRST since 1999, though there are also many good points to the alliance system.

We'll try to do better next year, and make it to all of our matches.

Just out of question, but did the lack of quick access to band saws, drill presses and the like have much of an impact on the time it took to repair the robot?

To say that we were thrilled to be picked by S.P.A.M. is an understatement. Considering what we had demonstrated in the qualifying matches, we felt lucky to be picked at all, and then to get picked in the first round by one of the best teams in the competition---it was great. Thanks, guys, and we'll see you in Atlanta, and some of you in Vegas.

The only reason you guys were not snatched up before we picked was that teams were paying too much attention to the rankings and win/loss results. After you fixed your technical problems, you guys had some hard luck losses. We were paying attention to your ability to score quickly, on all levels, in autonomous, and while being bothered by opponents - oh and also your ability to climb ramps.

We had a good alliance, and maybe we can work together in Atlanta. I'd love the chance to walk around in one of those pink wigs!

And ofcourse there were so many teams and people along the way that made Florida an exciting regional!!

team 25 and 233, you can get your wish......as you both plan on attending the hawaii regional next year with us veteran hawaii teams, teams 359 and 368. I believe 233 won a regional with our fellow hawaii robotics team 368 in seattle/portland in 2003, I forget? team 25 is the only team to have prevented us from getting to a regional finals as we have made it 6 times in our 7 times attending a regional since 2000, with two regional championships......
Teams 254 and 330 will be there I assume.......
NJ plans on sending teams 11, 75?, and a few others who I will be working with to get them and anyone else a Hawaii packet.
All of you FL teams should come as our weather is very similar to yours during this time!
The Hawaii regional is GUARANTEED to be during the 5th week of regionals.

Hope all of us are having a great season so far!!!

We are next going to Vegas which surely will be tough with 4 FL teams and 254, 4, 39, 108, etc!!!

I'm pretty sure teams pick their alliance partners based on more than wins/losses and rankings. If that were the case, the top 8 would pick each other and only the top 24 teams would ever have a chance of going to the finals rounds. As that's not the case, I'm sure everyone has their reasons for picking - or not pinking in this case - who they did.
