Yet another regional thread. If only starting it meant that the season was already here.
At any rate, who's coming? What dastardly plans do you have for winning? And most importantly, are all you slackers out there going to break down and actually have a mascot for the Friday Macsot Challenge? You can count on LSR living up to its end of the deal and putting on a great event, we just need you guys to be a little more spirited. Especially Team Fusion. Assuming that's possible.

418 is coming.
Our school mascot had so much fun last year with all of the teams and mascots, that there is talk of bringing along the 2nd mascot this year to share the fun.
Come join in the competition and fun with all of us at LSR - it's a blast.

364 is going. Woo Hoo!!! Can't wait either. I'm really pumped about this next season for some reason.

The Toltechs, team 499, have finally gotten all the commitments signed for hosting a local kick-off here in San Antonio. All that is needed is to have 8 teams select this site for kick-off and kit pick-up. I hope this will help with time & $$$ for area teams who otherwise would need to drive into Houston for kick-off.
We have use of a state of the art teleconference theater. It is in the Advanced Technology Center located on the Kelly USA site of the Alamo Community College District.

Look for this on the TIMS system when time for selecting your kick-off / kit shipment location draws near.
OF course 118 will be there... ready to battle it out and have some fun..
We will def. bring the spirit with us

So 57 will obviously be there, but here's a fun fact for everyone. 57 has attended the Great Lakes Regional in Michigan the past several year to pit ourselves against the greats like 33, 65, 66, 494, etc. in action. Also cause we're nuts and I have great fun laughing at the students looking foolish in the snow.
At any rate, it appears that the Juggernauts, team 1, will be attending the GLR this year and following us home to Texas to attend the LSR. Perhaps they don't like the cold as much as us, having to deal with it all the time. Or maybe the tropical heat of Houston sounds appealing from 1,500 miles away. Someone should probably have warned them that Houston is, in fact, a swamp.
But their questionable selection of comfortable clime aside, they're an awesome team that will definitely bring a new look to the regional this year. Heaven help you all if we pair well with them.

Personal opinion only,
Houston is awesome during LSR.
I think it gets pretty and stays that way just for FIRST.
Never ever a bad time at Lone Star Regional.
Welcome everyone, far and near!

Yes, you do have to pay for parking, Barry.
For those coming, I would suggest the weekend pass. There is a table setup to the right past the pits and staff is there to assist with that. If no one posts more accurate info, I'll edit in later.
Barry, you can root for anyone you want to but you have to be real loud and you have to 'share' by visiting all us other teams at Lone Star as well. :)
YaY!
Jane
Here's the edit:
You pay $8.00 at the entry gate and keep the receipt. When purchasing the parking pass for 3 days, you present the receipt and they apply the amount towards the pass. You can also pay per day, $8.00, but I don't think you have in and out access with that.
The amount of the 3 day pass was $30.00 in 2006. The parking pass is for school vans, SUVs, and personal vehicles. There is no charge for school buses or buses that teams have chartered to come to the event.
Does anyone else think that we are expanding and will need a new venue in a year or so... or am i jus the only one

I don't see how that could possibly be necessary. We're barely making use of Reliant Arena as it is. We're only using half of the arena for a single field. There's easily enough room for a second field if we wanted it, the arena seats 8,500 after all. That means seating for 100 teams bringing 85 people each. As for pit space, there's huge halls on both sides of the arena that the pits could easily be moved to. The only reason not to at the moment is because the Lobby area is adequate to our needs. Really, if it was absolutely necessary, you could fit 3 fields in the arena proper, and a fourth in the auditorium area.
If it came down to it, you could always move to the Reliant Center and rent some stadium seating. You could easily handle an event the size of nationals that way if you wanted to. And then you wouldn't have to worry about our measley 15,000 spectators barely filling up the lower half of the stadium.

This year 1902 won't be attending Lone Star. We had such a blast last year though, and I know that it was a very... very hard decision for the team to go to another regional this year. We'll be there in spirit, that's for sure. I hope that we can make it out there again to compete in the near future. Have an awesome time guys!

Houston was our very first event as rookies----we love going to Houston. Just don't ask us about the trailer blow-outs, the dead hawk, or about passing cookies from one vehicle to the other-on the interstate. It is a long 10 hour drive for us. We are looking forward to coming back down. After all the ice we have had---we are looking forward to warmer temps.
Our team likes to go to Kemah on Saturday night after the awards ceremony---then we head home Sunday morning. visit kemahboardwalk.com for all the attractions.
Can't wait to see all of you---it will be a very competitive and fun event.
Good luck!

I sent out the following request via email to several teams attending the regional already. I don't have contact information for several teams so I am posting the request here in the hopes that some of those teams are C.D. readers. If possible send me an email or pm. Thanks,
Greetings from San Antonio.
I have arranged for at least 30 upper elementary students from three schools in our district to take a Friday field trip to the Lone Star Regional. We intend to take groups of 5 - 6 through the pit to see the robots up close and ask questions. If possible, can you send me a short bio about your team and a person who we should ask for when we make the rounds in pit row. We will start the escorted pit row tours after lunch.
Thanks,

Andrew,
You should also check out the EARLY program while at the Regional. It is geared specifically for Elementary students to get them involved in engineering. We will have some information available and EARLY teams can be created in your area very easily.

Thanks Chris,
Will you have a demonstration board set up for EARLY? All of the elementaries that I am bringing to the competition have an EARLY team and one also has three squads entered in GEAR. (GEAR is associated with BEST and is an FLL type event) Edgewood ISD also is now in their second year of having middle school students compete in Botball. Team 499 has their first class of freshman with Botball experience which helped a great deal as two freshmen worked on the programming team and fit right in the mix. We are graduating twin sisters from the programming team this year which were going to be hard to replace.
Team 118 will most likely have a demonstration field set up.

The NCAA is kicking LSR out of Reliant Arena for 2008, as the Sweet, Elite, Final Something will be played there the same weekend as LSR next year. So LSR will indeed be temporarily moving to a new venue around Houston for 2008, and will then be back in Reliant after 2008.

We are a week away for LSR 2007 but as the head sponsor for our team, I have to work plans many months in advance.
As a team, we are ready to move from the single regional / championship via pre-registration mode into two regionals and championship if we win mode.
So my question to teams who frequent the LSR and have participated in other regionals, what regional in week two or three has the same Texas Friendly feel:cool: Meaning that I can bring in pizza / chicken / sub sandwiches and do lunch tailgate style in the parking lot. I did a short survey of regionals that are within a 24 hour bus ride and saw a lot of venues that specifically state, Don't bring food into the event or even onto the PROPERTY:mad:
Phoenix, Boilermaker (Purdue), St. Louis , Peachtree ....

More specifically, if you come by the Robonauts' pits you will be able to see a EARLY (Engineering and Robotics Learned Young) Robotics Field. If you could give me a time of when this will be happening I might be able to arrange some sort of demonstration with some materials that you use in the EARLY Robotics program.

From Reliant Park's Policies Page (here (http://www.reliantpark.com/en/cms/?105))
Tailgating
Tailgating is allowed in all of the Parking Lots at Reliant Park, but only during Houston Texans Football games or at the discretion of the management. There are areas of Port-A-Cans, Trash Dumpsters and Ash Bins in every parking lot. All tailgaters must use these responsibly.
The following rules must be followed to tailgate in the lots:
Parking lots will open 4 hours prior to kickoff for the Houston Texans and at the discretion of management for all other events.
You must purchase from the parking cashier or in advance additional spaces used to accommodate oversized vehicles or additional space for tailgating.
Parking is first come/first served; saving of spots will not be permitted.
Gates to Reliant Stadium will open 2 hours prior to kickoff for the Houston Texans and at the discretion of management for all other events.
Tailgating will be limited to the parking spot and space directly behind or in front of each vehicle, whichever is adjacent to the drive lane, but not blocking the lane. You may not tailgate beyond the blue lines marked in the drive lane.
Each valid parking receipt/hangtag is good for one 8’x16’ parking spot.
Fans can purchase one additional parking space/hangtag for the additional tailgating area (subject to availability).
RV’s will need to purchase a minimum of two parking spots and need to park in designated RV areas in each lot. You will need to purchase additional spaced for canopies.
Barbeques in tow will need to purchase an additional space and be able to provide receipts upon request.
Open flames are allowed but guests must extinguish flames before entering Reliant Stadium.
For safety purposes, all tents, chairs, etc. must be put away prior to kickoff.
Large balloons are not permitted as decoration.
The use of golf carts, bikes and scooters are strictly prohibited.
Music should be kept to a minimum.
Reliant Park will conform to all Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission laws, including the section that prohibits the public consumption of alcoholic beverages outside of licensed areas on Sundays prior to 10:00 a.m. Violation of state law could result in arrest or citation. Reliant Park urges you to drink responsibly and never drink and drive.
Please observe and obey the parking attendants and police when parking your vehicle.
You must park as directed by the parking attendants. Vehicles will be parked systematically, stall by stall, row by row, regardless of the occupancy status of the lot. Failure to park as directed can result in termination of your parking privileges.
Blocking or saving parking spaces is prohibited. Fans who wish to tailgate together must arrive together.
Overnight parking is not allowed, unless authorized by management.
Fire Extinguisher: Minimum rating of 2-A:10-B:C Must be fully charged and available at all times.
Charcoal: Must be match-light or quick-light type of charcoal. Use of lighter fluid is strictly prohibited. Provide a metal pan under the B-B-Q pit to prevent ashes from falling onto the ground. Deposit coals in the orange containers provided. Do not throw trash in the ashbins.
Propane: Ensure connections are tight to prevent leaks. Drippings from gas grills must not fall onto the ground.
Trash: Keep area clear of trash. Avoid allowing trash to accumulate around B-B-Q pits. Deposit trash in green dumpsters, not in orange ash containers.
Pit Safety: Keep combustible materials at least three (3) feet away from pits. Placement of pits should be such that passers by cannot come into contact with the pit. Watch for children playing in the area. Do not leave burning pits unattended. DO NOT PLACE HOT PITS OR COALS UNDER VEHICLES. ALLOW TIME FOR PITS TO COOL.
Generators: Use of Generators is allowed; however, fuel must be stored in (UL) approved metal safety cans with spring-loaded lid and flashback guard.

Pavan Dave.Pavan,
There's already tailgating allowed at LSR in the parking lot. That is, teams may bring outside food onto Reliant Park property and eat it in the parking lot outside the Arena proper. This is one of the few regionals where teams can do this. Andrew is asking if there are any other regionals nearby that let teams do even this much.
To Andrew,
57 regularly competes at the Great Lakes Regional. It's cold, it's super-tough, and it's probably more than a bus ride away, but our usual lunch plan is to stash sandwich and such in a van in the parking lot and eat there. We haven't had any problems with this at GLR.

Ummm. No. I'm certain that it's not a permanent move. We have things FAR too good in the Reliant Arena. Location, event support, and expansion room are all great at Reliant. I'm convinced that there is no other venue in or around Houston that could credibly support our growing regional nearly as effectively as Reliant Arena or maaaaybe one of the other Reliant Park facilities.

The list is up to Fifty 4th & 5th graders along with a dozen teachers. The hope is that we have them leaving early enough in the AM to arrive at the arena by 9:30 AM. We'll escort them into the stands so we are going to attempt to set up some seating for them without violating the spirit of the rules of not saving seats. We will let them watch games in the morning so that they can see the robots in action on the field and hopefully recognize teams when the visit the pits after lunch. So the plan for the pit tours by escorted student groups is after lunch, 1:00 - 2:30. They will be getting back on the bus and make the 3 hour trip back to San Antonio so that their parents can pick them up by 6:00 PM:)
I appretiate all the support and help that the veteran teams are giving to introducing the FIRST experience to these future Toltechians:D

Lone Star was amazing. I didn't see all of the matches but I know three teams scored around the rack (8 ringers) and from what I saw, If 148, 364, or 2158 (AusTIN CANs) are together (with or against each other) in the final matches, there will be more views of those final matches than there are registered members on Chief Delphi. It will be THAT good.
Watch it, you're gonna love it!

When I click on the Lone Star Regional link at the FIRST Webcast site (http://robotics.arc.nasa.gov/events/webcasts/regionals_2007.php), I get a Windows Media Player error message:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because a network error occurred. The server might not be available. Verify that you are connected to the network and that your proxy settings are correct.

I'm having the same problem. I sure wish someone could tell us what we are doing wrong soon. I'm missing the action!

I was able to see their second, third, and fourth match so far. The autonomous keeps missing by inches. They lost Match 9 because of pentalties, Match 23 they won, Match 28 they lost, but did extremely well and was able to place four tubes on the spider while under defense.
I hope you will be able to view it. I was able to pick it up from here: http://robotics.arc.nasa.gov/events/webcasts/regionals_2007.php
Rats!
I can view the Las Vegas and Palmetto webcasts, but Lone Star is a different story. I checked the proxy config's on Windows Media Player - no difference between autodetect and using the browser's proxy configuration.
The LSR media link is:

where as for Palmetto it is:

On that page, I'm clicking on the Lone Star Regional Live (mms://sargasso-3.arc.nasa.gov/lonestar) link. Windows Media Player comes up indicating that it's "Connecting to media..." and after about 10 seconds the dreaded message window pops-up:
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because a network error occurred. The server might not be available. Verify that you are connected to the network and that your proxy settings are correct."
I don't have this problem with the two other Live webcasts (Las Vegas and Palmetto). Any experts out there with suggestions???

i'm having the same problem with the webcast... i am very interested in seeing how the brazilian tem #1772 is doing out there...
if someone could tell me i would be very very happy ^^
bye...
see ya in Atlanta !!:D
i saw 1772 in a match with 118 this morning where the alliance got a full row plus a few more tubes for a score around 270ish.
I just watched 1772 with 148 get a full row and win the match with 256 points. In that same match on the other alliance 16 capped very impressively during autonomous.

How is Team 16 doing on the field? Are they hanging ringers, playing defense, climbing onto ramps??
In KC the autonomous was very close to scoring keepers, however, they weren't having much luck with the ringers. It appeared than "two minute warning" was moving well and playing reasonably good defense...

Team 16 (Bomb Squad) seems to be doing alright. Opposing alliances seem to be playing a lot of defense against them. I think that when they go to score they are doing it pretty accurately, but not having much opportunity to score because of the defense. Match 49 was the first time it sucessfully scored the keeper. It had gotten very close the other 5 matches. They were in a deep one on one battle in match 40 and ended up winning the ringer. They are climbing on to ramps when needed, but that was only once so far today. They play one more time today.

Can anyone post any more information about whats going on at Lonestar? The FIRST site has no information available on matches, standings, or awards. The webcast wasn't working for some of us as well. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, someone post some more information about what is going on in Houston! Inquiring minds want to know! Who is hot and who isn't? Who got what awards so far?
Anyone know why the FIRST site has no information on Lonestar?
I do not have all of the rankings, but I do know that Team 647 Cyberwolves were ranked 3rd by end of today.
Perhaps if all of the teams that are reading this thread announced were they are at the end of day, we can get some idea.

Now i can see... but the image quality here is poor... and i can't remember the numbers to say to you... here you go, the 8 alliances:
1 - 846, 148 and 1750
2 - 118, 476 and 1745
3 - 1421, 418 and 16
4 - 1772, 364 and 57
5 - 1, 1429 and 437
6 - 2276, 1742 and 1801
7 - 1863, 462(i guess) and 231
8 - 647, 31 and 1255
as i said maybe one or another team is wrong (because the quality is poor and i had to guess)... but it won't change much from this list...

I just got a call from my son (Bomb Squad) and he feels like their partners are good scoring bots with ramps, maybe the #3 alliance is the "sleeper"...

I just got a call from my son at the LSR.
He said that a "red card" was issued to Team 16 because they got lifted by a red robot in the red alliance zone. From what he said, team 16's robot was being pinned and defended strongly in the red home zone when they were lifted by a red robot's forklift. That ended up being a penalty on blue. Did team 16 attempt to escape the red home zone, did they drive onto the red robot's lift?
My son wasn't sure that Team 16 deserved a penalty for their actions...

It's not always easy to understand why penalties were called, even when you are right beside the field. Often, the referees will talk about any controversial penalties at the end of the match to make sure they all agree on the infraction. But the game announcer might not explain the penalty very well.

It's a very tough game. The robots can take only so much abuse before something fails. But all of the teams are winners, maybe just not the champions today.
THANK YOU very much for providing the updates.
Are you actually in Brasil right now? (If so, I think it's funny that you are describing an event that's much closer to me than to you - the marvels of modern technology!)

you're welcome it was a pleasre to help... i know hos is frustrating to don't have any information, i was in the same situation yesterday...and yeah i'm in brazil now... it is 6:24 pm here... yeah that is really funny...
yeah sometimes the things taka a bad turn... it's a pity... i would like to see 1772 competing in atlanta... another brazilian team :D lol
PS: sorry if made grammar or spelling mistakes :D
See ya
It's not always easy to understand why penalties were called, even when you are right beside the field. Often, the referees will talk about any controversial penalties at the end of the match to make sure they all agree on the infraction. But the game announcer might not explain the penalty very well.
I would be thrilled if the referees took the time to tell the teams receiving the penalties how, why and when the penalty was assessed.
Thrilled.

I just got home from the LSR and had a fantastic time. Congratulations to ALL of the teams! Team 1480 fought gremlins all day on Friday with our arm, but did well Saturday morning. Unfortunately a little to late, but the kids learned a lot and were VERY proud that they finally got their robot working.
Elimination rounds were incredible. And the defense was intense. The pit crews for some of the robots were kept very busy between rounds (118!) keeping their machines running. By the finals teams were scrambling for fresh batteries in those no holds barred matches.
Way to go!

Does anyone have the list of awards? The FIRST website still doesn't have ANYTHING!

I recall a partial list.
Sportsmanship - 57
Engineering Inspiration - 118
Chairman's - 922
Industrial Design - 148
Motorola Quality - 476
Team Spirit - 462
Safety - 476
Sorry, that's all I can remember at the moment. Tooootally wiped out from the finals and losing two such close matches on a robot getting pushed into non-workingness.

1772 was getting defended pretty hard by 1745. In the 2nd match, 1745 pushed them hard enough to make 1772's treads slip off a pulley and catch inside their robot, so they couldn't move. In the 3rd match, the same happened, only 1745 completely bent up 1772's arm as well. So I think 1772 would have had a rough time at nationals with their arm bent like that.

Oh yeah, thanks for the info on the award Kevin!

Heh. No, they didn't. We lost that match by 2 points, So I'd be taking a slightly different tone if they had been penalized. I'll be parsing the video I recorded and uploading it to SOAP soon, so everyone can see what happened and where the awards went.
As for why none of it was posted, I here it was a communication SNAFU, and an ISDN line was ordered instead of an ethernet line, so there was no way of connecting to the internet at the regional

I would be thrilled if the referees took the time to tell the teams receiving the penalties how, why and when the penalty was assessed.
Thrilled.
As the driver for 418, I would like to add that the head referee did, in my opinion, an amazing job. There were several times I did not understand, or disagreed with the penalties, and every time I talked to him after a match he patiently explained the ruling to me. Though I agree that it would be great if the referees went up to the drive team and explained penalties, considering how much they are already expected to do, I don't know if that would be feasible.
As for the red card, I believe we (team 418) received the red card. I decided to not approach the referees on the red card decision due to the chaos and heightened emotions; however, this is my understanding of what happened:
I (the 418 robot) drove across the field in 2nd gear (around 9 ft/sec) and 1745 approached us at the same time. Having just received a 10 point ramming penalty, I slowed down, then decided to push through them to get to 118 and 476. While attempting to push them, they got on top of our robot and were close to falling. I then tried to back off, but realized we had become tangled. It is my belief, based on no evidence, that this was interpreted by the referees as us attempting to push 1745 over, which is reasonable grounds for a red card. I would just like to say, as the driver of the 418 robot, it was never my intention to flip their robot, in fact, I was just as interested in backing off as the were. Well, eventually 1745 managed to back off of us, pulling our battery cables in the process. Without our main battery plugged in, we were dead for the rest of the match.
Regardless, it has been an amazing day. Congratulations to team 118, 476 and 1745 for their hard fought win today, and thanks to 1421 and 16 for being amazing alliance partners

As an impartial observer of the finals, there was a lot of pretty aggressive defense going on. I have to say, though, that Purple Haze was being clearly VERY aggresive on defense. The match in question was clearly a high speed collision from across 2/3s of the field. Whether an attempt was made to slow down beforehand, it was not discernable from the stands. I thought 418 had been disabled due to the DQ call and was frankly amazed 1745 survived the crash. This sort of driving was evident in prior matches and I guess the referee finally decided enough was enough.
another 6 min time out... they are doing the chicken dance! lol
Ok I just had to point this out for those who missed it, we actually had Paul Gudonis aka President of FIRST out there doing the chicken dance with our regional director and some of the judges. What a great time, and no I did not do the chicken dance, I have a thing about chickens, can't stand them so I avoid anything that has the word chicken in it.

They seemed to have a great time with the team mascots they were dancing with. That was one of the many, many special moments of LSR this year.
Edit:
There are 2 other moments that stand out to me:
1. watching the Brazilian team's robot. It was a neat, small robot that consistently hung ringers and worked quietly and efficiently. It was wonderful to watch.
2. watching Team 118 work hard at repairing their robot next to the field in preparation for the upcoming match(es). The students and mentors working together in difficult circumstances was something to learn from and to respect.
I have others but they are kind of jumbled in a whirl of action, color, sound, laughter, emotion. :)
Final match 3
1772, 364 and 57 X 118, 476 and 1745
Score
30 X 32
coment:
only a tube to the blue... both teams lifted at 12"... 1772 stopped to work again...
now a brazilian comenting this.... what a pity... if the robot of 1772 didn't break they could get more 30 pts and win in both games
Yeah, one of the teams from the 118, 476 and 1745 alliance figured out that if they push the Brazilian team by the side that it would knock off their treads, and in the final match they bent 1/4" aluminum on them that connected to their arm. Very rough defense was played by us as well. Both alliances were struggling in the finals to keep running. We had the battery cable yanked out in one of the matches. I want to congratulate teams 118, 476 and 1754 on their great work and we hope to see them at nationals.

<G35> Intentional ROBOT - ROBOT interaction - Strategies aimed solely at the destruction, damage, tipping over, or entanglement of ROBOTS are not in the spirit of the FIRST Robotics Competition and are not allowed.
If the contact was not high-speed ramming and was made strictly within the bumber zone, a penalty would probably not be called. Whether it is penalized or not, adopting a strategy that damages an opposing robot (due to a known vulnerability) is not GP...
Edit: <G35> is the ""FIRST is not BattleBots" rule. I don't believe any team involved thinks of FIRST as BattleBots and probably has to remind the public frequently what we really do

I am on 118 and I am pretty sure that no one on our alliance purposely knocked off the Brazilian teams tread. It was from playing defense and trying to prevent them from scoring. There was no intent to take the Brazilian team "out of the fight" and make their robot not function as well.

There was no intent to take the Brazilian team "out of the fight" and make their robot not function as well.I am sure that veteran teams such as your own don't develop strategies based on damaging opposing robots. We all scout teams to understand how we can gain advantage based on relative capabilities of the robots and drivers.
My earlier post was intended to remind teams that this is not "Battle-bots" and a strategy that relies on breaking an opponent's robot is not consistent with the spirit of FIRST. I hope you weren't offended...
It is alright. I had just misinterpreted what you said. I had thought you meant our alliance had strategized to make sure the Brazilian team could not score, but that last post clarified things. Thanks for the clarification.
Thanks to team 148 and 1750 for being great alliance partners. It was very exciting for us to be teamed up with 148 as we both could place high amounts of ringers. The great defense of 1750 allowed us to get a 256-0 win in the 2nd match of quarterfinals.

I would have thought this, but someone on the field (in the chaos I don't remember who) told me that the initial impact was not the reason for the red card. I do not know how credible the source was, since a lot of things were said and thought on the field, but that reason would seem inconsistent with the rulings earlier that day, and the previous two days. Additionally, IF it was interpreted that I (the driver of the 418 robot) was trying to intentionally "tip over" 1745 it would obviously be a violation of rule <G35>*, which, to me, is reasonable grounds for a red card.

Where will the pits be located at this new venue? Will they be on the main floor blocked off by a curtain or will they be in a separate room?
This looks like a nice venue for the regional. I am a little said because I attend Rice University which is just up the Metro Rail from Reliant Arena. It was really nice this year to be able to just hope on and go back and forth from Lone Star.

Thank you to Reliant Arena for all their years of support.
Yes we are working with the Merrell Center to host the 2008 regional there nothing is finalized at this point and until we have a contract this is not official, but this is a ONE YEAR ONLY thing, we WILL be returning to Reliant in 2009. We had to find another venue for 2008 because Reliant will be hosting the Sweet Sixteen that year. We have an amazing venue with Reliant and they go out of their way to help us make this a great event for all the teams that attend. This year not only did they open up Hall D to us so that the teams could eat inside without having to sit in the rain, they also brought chairs down without us asking and at no cost to us. It is this type of consideration and the ablility to grow at this venue that keeps our regional at Reliant.
Until we have a contract there will be no decisions made on pit and field layouts so any thing that is said by anyone other than a regional or assistant regional director for Lone Star is not accurate information. We will inform the teams that are attending of all the information they will need as soon as we have details but as of right now nothing is set in stone.

I noticed a new "Gracious Professionalism Award" for Lonestar. What's the story? I don't remember this before nor do I see it for any other regional this year. It sounds like a good idea though. Kymber, I know nothing about the new Merrell Center but the good ol' Reliant Center is hard to beat. I wonder though, when Lonestar returns to the Reliant in 2009 could it be a two field super-regional? It sure seems like Lonestar and the Reliant Center could handle it. Could it be???? Me hopes!

This is an award that BP sponsors for the Lone Star regional, we went to our judges and asked them what they felt wasn't really covered by the awards. They told us we really needed an award to recognize the teams that exhibit outstanding gracious professionalism, they said that we teach and encourage gracious professionalism but there really wasn't an award to recognize those teams that took it to heart. Team 57 not only translated for Brazil, Team 1772, they provided transportation to and from their hotel as well as meals during their stay. As for Teams 434 and 846 I am not positive what exactly was said about those teams, I was having to run around and deal with things for the regional so I missed most of the awards ceremonies. I do know that 846 really seemed to be one of the favorite teams among the other teams, I heard quite the roar from the field when they won the BP Gracious Professionalism award Saturday.

Reliant is absolutely capable of handling a super regional and the Lone Star Committee is more than ready to turn Lone Star into a super regional. Now here's the but, to have a super regional you have to have 80 teams. We had 52 teams this year so we know that with all our Lone Star teams out there recruiting teams and helping them find funding we could achieve super regional status. As of right now we are not planning a super regional but if our teams pull together and recruit enough teams I'm sure we could have a super regional in the not too distant future.
I don't know how big the field for next year is going to be. but if the merrell center deal comes through i can tell you that the floor space is that of a high school basket ball court plus there are retractable stands that make it even bigger than that
also i got some questions regarding the merrell center's basic floor plan so i attached some files that contain the floor plan located below. I don't really know the dimensions of a high school basketball court in relation to the first fields so I can't really judge the possibilty of a super regional but mabey you can.
5385
5386
This venue is not large enough to accomodate a super regional nor are we ready for a super regional. We are REQUIRED to have 80 teams for a super regional and we will only be accomodating 45-50 teams maximum at this venue. This venue will NOT accomodate 80 teams and 2 fields. Once we return to Reliant in 2009 if everything comes together just perfectly, the committee has been able to raise the funds, and teams have recruited enough teams that we have 80 teams then we MIGHT have a super regional. This is a big job and will require everyone to work together and get the word about FIRST out.

Kymber, this sounds encouraging that Lonestar might one day be a super regional. I know the Reliant Center can handle it if another section were opened up for a larger pit area. Please correct me if I am wrong but isn't the number of teams at a regional more of a limit imposed by FIRST rather than how many the regional can get to attend? I have always thought that FIRST specified a number of available slots and that was it. At least the FIRST regional registration webpage makes it appear that way to me. X number of slots - Y number of teams signed up = Z number of open slots. I would think that since there were 13 new rookie teams at Bayou this year just from Mississippi and Louisiana that by 2009 it would be very possible to make 80 teams at Lonestar. Lonestar is a great regional and since it is usually the last weekend I would think many teams would love to make it their 2nd or 3rd regional if FIRST would open up the slots. I can honestly see it happening and hope it does!

Actually the limit on many teams a regional can have register is set according to how many teams the venue can accomodate. We will have to expand the pit area but we do have the ability to do that.

9:50 AM (Red 441 1561 1859) (Blue 16 1867 1480)
and
10:38 AM (Red 1772 16 653) (Blue 1867 1480 231)I'm working on this. Parsing the matches out is a slightly tedious* process for me, and I have a lot of paper grading to catch up with before professors kill me. Expect them to start going up tomorrow afternoon/evening if my profs haven't caught me and nailed me to a desk by then.
*Only because I'm so picky. I'm re-encoding the elims I posted to SOAP earlier. I've got a better solution for removing interlacing now, and the team numbers are actually legible.

Kevin, thank you for doing this...it is much appreciated. Here's hoping that you are not nailed to a desk. :)

While I'm at it, I'd like to ask my customers' opinions on this encoding change I'm making. I'm uploading one of the newly encoded quarterfinals videos. It will be called tx_qf1m1alt.wmv. If you guys could compare it to the original tx_qf1m1.wmv file and PM me your preference, I'd appreciate it. I'd like to make sure I'm not making things worse. For those that have forgotten: SOAP Lone Star Archives (http://www.soap.circuitrunners.com/2007/movies/tx/)
Encoding differences:
Original
Uses drop field deinterlacing. Moving objects have crisp borders, but we're basically dumping half the resolution by dropping every other line. Thus the blurry letters.
Alt
Uses blend deinterlacing. Moving objects have blurry borders. Interlaced fields are blended together preserving info and keeping detail in stationary objects, like the text.
Basically, I'm looking for if the motion blur is distracting or troublesome. looking around 1:45 in the vids is a good example.
Kevin S.
Well we couldn't have had more fun at Lone Star. I wanna thank everyone that helped make lone star a success, and I want to thank our alliance partners for showing us a good time. I'll never forget Brazil leading our team in our cheer. Man it was fun. Congrats to 118, 1745,and 476.
Kevin,
Thanks for posting the videos. I found the alt version looked much better. Its much more beneficial to be able to read numbers off of the robots then to have no motion blur. Just my opinion, but regardless I'll be happy with whichever version of matches get uploaded as long as i can tell red from blue. =)

Thanks a bunch Kevin! I've done enough video editing myself to know how mind numbingly tedious it can be. I'm trying to get used to some new contacts, so I can't really focus well enough to give a decent opinion on the encoding formats. So I'll go with the majority on that one.

That's good enough for me. I'll swap them all out this morning and get on finishing the quals.

Eek. I have all of my team's matches (16) recorded... and since we just happen to be in both of those matches, I do have them. But, I follow our robot around the entire time. If you still want them, let me know... I'll try to dig them out. hah.

I love the setup at Reliant Area. It is easy to get to and from the stands and everything is very close to the venue.

Okay. I'll dig through the footage tonight and maybe I could just stick them on YouTube and send you a link or something.

Kevin is just now putting up the qualifying rounds. You are looking for matches 66 & 74.

Kevin will sadly not be getting to 66 & 74 this morning. School and all that. I should get to those tonight. The uproar for Q's was just so great I figured I should post as I get to them.

When I started my post I thought it was the Friday AM matches but when I saw they wanted Saturday AM matches I knew it would be at least a day before they would be up. We have all of the house feed as well except I don't have anyone with the time / energy to edit and upload. This is helping me share the robot performace with the mentors/sponsors who wanted to see the robot perform. Your work and the Soap site gives me a solid link to send them to.:yikes:

Okay, an update. I've got all the matches parsed and encoded or encoding. Unfortunately, SOAP has run out of quota. I'm taking down the huge awards vids since I wanted to chop those up anyways, but that'll only get me to about match 50. So y'all may have to wait until SOAP gets their hosting bumped up before you have the entire selection of matches.
TubaMorg,
If you still want those two matches, hit up my AIM around 1PM CDT or later and I'll try to send them to you that way.

Just a bit of cross-posting here as there might be more traffic on this thread:D
Any and all Texas FIRST teams need to inform their State legislators about an upcoming event happening in the basement of the Capitol building. Please visit this post to learn more:yikes:

Where are the awards videos posted? I think I read somewhere in this thread about that---but I can't find that information now that I am specifically looking for it.

Tonya,
I've temporarily taken down the awards videos from SOAP. SOAP ran out of quota on their server, and teams were asking for qualifying matches. I'll repost the awards individually shortly after SOAP increases their quota and has room. As always, I have all this footage available at higher quality than on SOAP and would be more than willing to provide it to interested teams for the low, low price of enough DVD-Rs to burn the videos to and a self-addressed, stamped CD mailer. Interested teams can PM me for details and to make arrangements.

YAY lol. You can expect some good competition from 118 and 418. We going to have a rematch of last year in the finals hopefully. }=) !!
Pavan.
Ha, I just rememberd this post. I guess you got your wish, though we met in the semis. What an amazing series of matches, and congrats on the win. With matches as exciting and competitive as those were, I already can't wait for next year, though I'll have to come as an alum.

Kevin,
I appreciate all the hard work that you have done editing the vids from Lone Star. They are great!! You included the final score after each match. That's impressive. You stopped at qualifying match 46. Is there any chance to complete the rest of the matches?
Thanks
