View Full Version : COOL SPONSER
now i know this isnt like some metal company nd all , but how cool would it be to get sponsered by Red-Bull or like monster energy ..... wadda ya think
I think it's been done - I've been to at least one event where Red Bull was being handed out.
When looking for sponsors, don't limit yourself to fab/metalworks. Some of the best ones come from realtors, dentists, car dealers, restaurants, media - everybody wants a piece of success!

In the past, everyone gets really excited when the Red Bull truck pulls up to the Duel on the Delaware with free drinks...
The one I remember was Hooters Air. That had to be the most popular pit at the championships.

I personally think Chip Ginassi Racing is a pretty darn cool sponsor myself. (they were an associate sponsor for 1018)

ahh yes i remeber that they even handed out their little stickers
"I <3 Hooters" some mentors didnt find those amusing(others did)
(good 70th post haha)
Monster Energy is the best. I drink so much. The team jokes about having them and Mountain Dew sponsor us, even if all they did was supply free drinks.

Krispy Kreme would be pretty awesome sponsor too...Don't forget 116's sponsor, Dunkin Donuts :)
I'd just like to say that if you are hosting an event such as an off-season or an FLL tournament, contact Red Bull............there's a good chance that you'll be able to arrange for their "Mobile Energy Team" to drop by. :p:cool:

If any energy drink were to sponsor us, I think I'd pick bawl's. they rock.
But anyway, as far as cool sponsors, we got sponsored by Intuitive surgical, the company that makes the daVinci Surgical robot. They were very cool, because they gave us a tour of the system as well as funding.

I believe the Robo Dawgs were sponsored by Mountain Dew(sry cant remember the #)
ya an energy drink sponser to give free drinks would be expesially helpfull during those long saterday build days.. i know all of you know what im talking about .. the times when ur cutting steel pipe making sparks outside while its snowing. One place I talked to about sponsership was like we cant give yall cash , but we can give yall food ... were like well take it.

Bawls is great. But they sponsor so many LAN parties that i dont know if they could do a FIRST team.

How's the New York Yankees for a cool sponsor?
They've been one of team 395's main sponsors for several years, and we've been honored on their field before a game several times as well.

now thats a sweet sponsor(even though i dont like the Yankees)! Any sports team or such would be cool. It kinda goes along with Dean's hope that FIRST would be seen as a sporting event.
We really had no sponsors our first year, but we had a NASA grant for $5,000. For the second years, NASA would grant $6,000 as a MATCHING grant, so we had a year to line up sponsors for $6,000. We spoke we wrote, we begged, we did everything we could think of and all we had was $50 and 20 coupons for free slurpies. We were all discouraged and were brainstorming trying to think of who to ask. We had been turned down by all the tech companies and local businesses.
One kid said, "You know, there is a group in the valley that likes to fiddle with machines and they get together a lot and many are professional people who may want to back a 'hard luck' robotics club." He had our attention.
"Who?"
"Well, the Hell's Angels"
We all laughed at his joke, but the more we thought about it... It would surly make the news and pointing out that only the Hell's Angles supported extracurricular academic activities at a public high school might embarrass legislators and CEOs to support us.
After a few more weeks of no sponsors, we had a serious discussion about approaching the motorcycle group. We finally decided that it really was not the way to go, but somehow the sight of the H. A. riding into the Arizona Regional and walking through the pits... The public image that robot competitions are for the nerd kids would never survive. Would an Orange County custom robot be far behind? Big Paulie with a "842" tatoo?
Eventually we did interest a few companies to help us out and have since thrived and we now aim for the Chairman's Award. But I still fantasize what might have been

I think bikers would be great sponsors - especially the ones that like to tinker with their bikes. I'll bet they are all big and bad on the outside, but inside they are all just looking to be loved... Just like FIRST robots everywhere!
Seriously, if they were really into customizing their bikes, then they probably have access to and knowledge about machining equipment that would come in handy during the build. Additionally, they would have some good ideas on how to "chop out" the look of your robot. Though you might have to do some sort of background check for the more sketchy characters...
I know that Harley Davidson sponsors some teams, and I've heard that Harley engineers make the best mentors (as long as you don't mind flames & skulls on your bot)

A couple of years ago the Jacksonville Jaguars sponsored some Florida teams. I also remember a Campbell's Soup team that used to have great looking robots using their logo. There was also a team sponsored by Lego. The Kodak team used to hand out cases of disposable cameras and was used in their commercial.
i think some Car custom shop would support first .. like a PIMP MY BOT kinda thing... yalll know what im talking about

I would LOVE to have Ganassi as a sponsor. Although I would love to have Hendrick Motorsports as a sponsor just a bit more ;) Haha. NASCAR mixed with Robotics... nothing better right there!!
We almost had a local custom car shop sponsor us. Unfortunatly they had just made a huge donation to a local football team so they had no money to donate.

Oh... the money went to a SPORTS team... that's a shocker right there *rolls eyes* None the less a football team. Why do the sports get recognition over us?? It just isn't fair. Yall should have had that garage sponsor you instead of a football team.

I think having a professional sports team sponsor a FIRST team would be AWESOME. Just like businesses try to ride the hype of the team they sponsor, this professional sports team would be bowing down to the more prestigious FIRST team! At least that's how it works in my head.

I have absolutely NOTHING wrong with a professional sports team sponsoring someone in Robotics. I am a jock so it would be awesome to see the two on the same page for once lol. I just don't like how it seems that football (and other sports) get more recognition than the Robotics teams. I love your idea of getting sports teams involved... other than Ganassi Racing... I think it would be beyond awesome if we had other professional sports teams helping us out.

I personally love our Sponsors. Though we only hav to they're are the greatest. we hav CSun and Dreamworks Animations SKG.. so if u've seen 1070's shirts.. RJ from Over the Hedge is on there it's great. They provide us w/ everything.. and.. we were at the premiere of OVer the Hedge and we got to see some previews of upcoming movies.. it was great :)

I think it would be awesome to get more robotics companies involved as sponsors... I'm trying to whittle down some folks here at Foster-Miller to sponsor a team up in the Waltham, MA area. As it turns out, money is relatively easy to come by - the hard part is getting a time commitment from the engineers. Hopefully after I take them to see a competition they'll come around. Maybe I can get a team out of here next year.

I'm sorry... Ganassi Supports the IRL... Champ Car forever... If any IRL team sponsered our team... I would quit...
Though Our sponsers are cool too...

Speaking of oddities. American Eagle Co. is sponsoring a rookie team in Arizona this year. (First young persons' clothing company to sponsor a FIRST team?)
What's next? Championship or Regional Events on MTV? (That would be the epitome of FIRST!)

[Cheesy Sentimentalism] Any sponsor is cool, no matter what they do, or if they do anything at all, anyone that donates to FIRST is encouraging the success of the world of tomorrow, and our futures. Sponsors open up thousands of opportunities to FIRSTers around the world, for those of you wishing you had a cool sponsor, look further into what they do...are they a software design firm? do they write programs that affect your life in a big way, are they a pharmaceutical developing drugs to solve major ailments, are they even a pizzeria that cuts you a check from their limited income or an individual cutting you a check from their personal account. Think about what you have, think about the teams without sponsors, the teams that have to spend thousands out of their own pockets in order to afford to compete...every sponsor is cool, its just your perspective, whether or not your sponsor is highly publicized like red bull and monster, your sponsor is cool, look at everything they have done for you, for your team, for FIRST...how do you define cool? aren't they cool too?[/end cheesy sentimentalism] :p :D
Just my cents

Haha thats awsome man. I would love to be sponsored by the Yankees!
La-Z-Boy has always been our main sponsor. It's kinda funny going to GLR with all the GM/Dana/Ford/etc teams then hearing "TEAM 1023 THE BEDFORD EXPRESS, SPONSORED BY LA-Z-BOY!" However, a new sponsor is taking over the spot light becuase they donated 2x the amount of cash La-Z-Boy did in the form of material.Mid-West Fluid Power is a distributer of pneumatic components, 8020, and pretty much anything we could dream of needing we can get. However, we're trying to get a La-Z-Boy chair donated to do a raffle next season.

I don't think our team is as RedBull crazy as we are with Starbucks Double Shots, and Mountain Dew and Cheese it/nips (cant remember). That would be one heck of a year though with a load of mountain dew or doubleshot at our finger tips.

Also if MTV or anyone invaded FIRST I would be disappointed. I hate MTV with a passion because they don't play music videos anymore and show idiots 23/7 (for one hour they play music videos at like 5 AM). I think that it is great that we are being looked at by more people and hopefully American Eagle Co. will raise awareness about FIRST and Robotics Education but honestly, we don't need too much. MTV and commercials like Truth for FIRST would kill this organization in my opinion.

It's interesting that American Eagle is sponsoring a team. I'm not trying to start a clothing war, but they do offer moderately priced clothing that isnt all about what some other more expensive stores are about. I personally would have never thought of asking them to sponsor a team.

Correct me if I'm wrong: The AE Team is 2111 and will compete in the Arizona Regional this year. It may be a false interpretation of "Eagle's Aerie Schools"
But this is why I thought American Eagle:
American Eagle's new big deal is its Aerie line for girls. (Also indicates the school sponsored may be an all-girls team.)
But it would be a far reach from AE's local reach, as it is based in PA. They are probably contributing something. (It would be much easier for them to help Femme Tech Fatales (709) due to locality.) But maybe there's a "prettyness" about Arizona that makes national sponsorship attractive.

AE has a grant program setup. They will donate 1k to 25k to organizations in an area with a store. However, they have pretty strict requirements to apply for money/sponsorship.

Sorry to ruin all the excitement, but Eagle's Aerie Schools is a K-12 charter school based out of Gilbert, AZ. No affiliation with American Eagle.

Hmm yes, I remember that well. I think the line to meet the girls was maybe a 100 yards long. From what I remember I dont think they were allowed in the next day.

But it's still quite a coincidence and it would probably make sense. I'm pretty sure someone will take up the challenge. But chances are that the teams will be from Maryland or Pennsylvania or NY due to proximity to the HQ in Pennsylvania.
