Let's hear it for the NJ regional. Who is competing, who can't wait, and tell us anything you want about the NJ regional? All news and information concerning the 2007 New Jersey Regional should be discussed here.

I have just received word that Team 204 is coming back to New Jersey and competing once again with the good teams from the "garden state" and everywhere else.
Can't wait!

i think there is already a thread like this open.
any way 1676 will be back and better than ever.
also looking at the registration team 25 has not entered for the NJ regional (last year chairman's winners)

Don't worry, Team 25 will be competing at our home regional once again. We are currently registered for the Hartford regional, and will register for NJ once registration for second regionals begins.
The Sciborgs will be trying to make their way down to the New Jersey regional for the first time for our 2nd regional event. I'm sure we'll have a blast there (and face some very tough competition too)!

1676 will (as said above) be there (hopefully) with a wireless network with forums and possibly scouting data, so bring some wireless-enabled computers!
Lame mantra related to above statement: When everyone pitches in, it always works better! (I think). :D
See you there,

we had some doubts about it but we're definitely going to be there, can't wait to see you all.

It is great to hear that you are coming. As for snow, there was plenty of it last year. On the thursday of the event, a massive snow storm prevented teams for showing up or delayed them significantly.
1403 will be back for our 4th year.

Your team would most definitely want to invest in some warm clothes...
And now for your weekly "Visiting New Jersey" PSA
In NJ, we have these things called "pants". At this time of year, most people in NJ are wearing these devices that cover the entirety of their leg, including the lower extremeties. While this may sound a bit peculiar, covering the entir e leg, it helps keep one comfortable when the chilling winds blow on you at 7:15 in the morning outside of the venue.
Additionally, our feet are covered with these things called "shoes". "Surely you jest, as we wear shoes as well" you may be thinking, but there is a bit of a difference. While our shoes are similar to yours, there is a difference in that ours cover our toes as well. Once again, this is for the protection of your feet from the cold as the arena sits on top of an ice-skating rink.
Last but not least, you may want to invest in what we in NJ call "winter coats". These are generally noticable in that they typically contain a zipper and a modicum of filling to insulate the body in our sub-50 degree temperatures, which we are quite occustomed to, though you may not be. Please be sure to find one that includes a "hood", which is an attachment that helps protect your head from the wind. Consider it similar to the notion that we, as New Jersians, feel obligated to wear sunblock everywhere we go in your beautiful state, even on cloudy days (I don't get it, either).
Keep these tips in mind and I'm sure you will find your stay in New Jersey quite pleasant!

Leave it up to Mr. Gregory to make a PSA on pants.
Just an FYI, I'm working on content for the NJ Regional page on the new NJ/NYC FIRST site. So if there is any information that you would like to see, please PM me !! So far I've included local hotels, local restaurants (within walking distance), and I'm considering local drugstores/hardware stores also.

Don't invest your time in $200 coats that'll do nothing anyways! Get a thermal, layer your robotics T-shirt, get your shorts on and just run around like crazy! And you'll have a few bucks left over for additional stuff like more SHORTS! Remember, Jersey is cold, pants don't make too big of a difference.

"Down with pants, up with rankings!"
It was all randomness in the name of good fun of course. :p
Anyways, I got word Team 237 will be joining the CT factor along with team 716 going to NJ again.
CT pride makin' it's way back to Jersey after a year off!!
<side note> Sara, I have something to add to your list. The Trenton Train station is about a mile from the venue. I took the train in the last 2 years, and it wasn't that far of a ride. A simple less than $20 cab ride worked out for the best. (I'm thinkin' it was even less than 10 bucks.) 10 bucks, 3 minute ride, and I was good to go without having to lug all my stuff a mile or 2 across a major highway.
Always a good thing.

I was just perusing the team list on the FIRST website, and I have to say...this might be the scariest compilation of teams ever to face off in NJ. We have 3 teams that were on Einstein last year, countless regional wins, and even more awards. Granted none of that matters, but be wary...this regional isn't for the faint of heart.
I can't wait.

8 Regional Wins Amongst 6 Teams, 1 Championship Semi-Finalist, 1 Finalist, and 1 Champion, will all be there. That doesn't include the countless Chairman's, Woody Flower's, Animation, and other awards won by other teams attending. Looks pretty exciting to me, if not intimidating... Can't wait for March.
To any local teams or veterans of the regional: Do you have any hotel recommendations? Since FIRST won't be providing packages this year, its probably worth looking into things early. What are nearby attractions for students to go to either on Thursday or at night? Is there a confirmed team social, and if so, where? Thanks to anyone who can help with details for new teams attending like us.

Being part of the planning committee, I think I can field these questions.
As far as hotels go, I would have to agree, don't stay in Trenton. The area is definately one that students don't want to be wandering around in after dark. I'll try to find the link for the NJ regional website, where we're compiling all the information that you may need. I'm not sure about attractions either...of course it's Jersey, so there are going to be like 1000 malls in walking distance.
As more information develops I'll keep you posted.

The closest hotels seem to be in the Rt 1 corridor in the PRINCETON AREA- ABOUT 20 MIN NORTH of Trenton. That means teams travelling in wil need to find surface transportation to go to and fro.

On the subject of hotels:
Here is a rough compliation of some local hotels from the NJ FIRST website (I wrote the page, so let me know if you need more help/information): http://nycnjfirst.org/nj_hotels.html
Secondly, if you want to look for your own hotels, check out those in the Princeton/Lawrenceville area. They are likely to be the most convient and safe place for your team to stay. =)
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions, or shoot me an email and I will get your questions answered (if I can't answer them myself): sreffler@usfirst.org

I love how Sara did not fail to mention SAFE places to say. The arena is in Trenton, which isn't known to be the safest place in NJ to stay. But like she said, Princeton/Lawrenceville is probably your safest bet, though there may be a few hotels in Trenton.--Just don't stray too far from the hotel & don't do dumb things. Princeton and Lawrenceville are still quite the drive though (at least 10-15 minutes if not more) so you'll be needing some kind of ground transportation.
**and apparently I didn't realize that my coach posted the same thing a few posts above me :-p

We have stayed at the Courtyard Marriot Hopewell-Ewing in the past if I'm not mistaken.
Not much to do right in the area of the hotel (nice little airport right next to it though), but there was our good luck charm restaurant in 2004 (Hooters) on the way back to the hotel and then by the time we did got back to the hotel, some scouting in the lobby/conference room and then some much needed sleep.
About a 10-15 minute bus ride from the venue if I'm not mistaken.
Not too shabby!
The Route 1 corridor north of Trenton has the best selection of hotels and budget-priced restaurants that I know of in the area. Google Map hotels for Lawrenceville, NJ (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Lawrenceville,+NJ) will give you the list.
The Quaker Bridge Mall is out there as is a Home Depot or two (one also in Ewing). Be aware that Rt 1 is a major commuter route and gets pretty jammed up around the Rt 1/I 95 junction, so the 15-20 min non-rush hour ride to the SBA can become 30-40 min if you hit traffic.

All that 2 hour delay should mean to a FIRST team is more time to mentally prepare for the competition and get "in the zone".
Kinda like our 3 hour delay by bad descisions by our bus driver in 2004 where we had some great times as a team and by the time we showed up in NJ on 10am on Thursday, had the "get it done" attitude and just went right to work.
I think that was the best example of teamwork I have ever seen in my team. It made me very proud of all of our kids that day. :)

That will be soooo cool. No, literally: Cold. NJ in March is a little bit colder than, say, Hawaii. Although you'll be indoors much of the time, prepare for weather that can be from a high of 45 F to a low of 20 F - during the day. It gets colder at night.
I truly hope we have a few inches of snow for all y'all.

I second that. 1 South will become your worst nightmare during rush hour, I live on the North/South Brunswick Border just North of the area, and even just getting past the Quakerbridge area can be a nightmare. Plan extra time if you're traveling along there.

Depending on where you stay, you can probably plan a route avoiding Rt. 1, at least for the most part. Talk to whomever you decide to use for ground transportation, they probably know alternate routes, or can plan them.

27-12-2006, 23:19
202/206 take you straight to SBA, as does the Turnpike/195...there are several ways to get there...you could even take the train to the Trenton station and walk a couple blocks to the arena...although weather might make that hike a little less than desirable.
BandChick
28-12-2006, 00:34
Firstly, the train station is about a mile away. But I do not reccomend walking through that part of town unless you're with a big group. Obviously, this doesn't work if you have to lug tool chests, kits of spare parts, etc.
Secondly, George is right, you can certainly take a variety of roads to get to the SBA, but I reccomend 1/129. Even with traffic, that doesn't get terribly congested. That's the way I went to SBA last year, and while about 50 cars sat at the traffic light on the other side of the street, I got in without a wait. Anyone with driving questions or hotel questions absoultely should NOT hesitate to PM me. I will be happy to help anyone I can.
Team 293 will be there, who knows what SPIKE will hold this year. Although it will be hard to top our Batman wings from last year:D
I can't make it cause I will be in college, but I will be at the Chesapeake Regional as a mentor I hope.

That is in fact true. NJ FIRST has been working with the SBA to get something to cover the Masonite floor that they had down last year. This will cut down on not only the dust that got over everything, but also hopefully will keep the cold down.
Although Rohith got it correct when he advised you to dress warmly. It IS an Ice Rink and it will be held in March, so it's not like the SBA can turn the heat up...otherwise we'd have an unintentional water game on our hands...the rack will be hard enough to score on under normal conditions let alone adding it bobbing up and down on a melted ice rink.

this year, our team chose instead of having a common hawaiian shirt/uniform, to have every member where their own hawaiian shirts with common other "things" such as leis, etc.
We have experience with team 25 as we played against them 5 times last year in 1 regional and at championships.
They got a nice Hawaiian shirt as well.
See you all there!
Now, how far is it from the border in Pennsylvania where we are staying. I believe the town is called Langhorne, Penns.....

As more information develops I'll keep you posted.
the closest mall is a good 20-30 minutes on rt. 1 so um not really walking distance
plus there are litteraly no fast food restaurants nearby and only a couple of grocerystore/deli's about
5-7 blocks away
so i think getting food in the SBA would be a wise thing to do.
trust me i live two blocks down from the SBA
George A.
12-01-2007, 20:16
As far as food goes, the Concession stands will be open for the crowd, also there is the option to get the boxed lunch.

There is a McDonald's on Cass St. That's DEFINITELY walking distance.
And there's a few pizza places and chinese food places that are also down the street (opposite direction, but you can't get lost). They're only like 3 blocks away. My team walks there every year. And, there's actually a whole list of places to eat if you don't want concession food here: http://www.nycnjfirst.org/nj_restaurants.html
I do recommend the box lunch deal though, it's not that bad. A sandwich, a piece of fruit, a bag of chips & a soda. It's WAY cheaper than concession stand food, and you don't have to walk in the freezing cold.
I hope they do. Every year they promised to fix the problem(s), but it never seems to happen. I hate getting sick every year for the same reasons.
My mom has been talking to the guys who work at the SBA (apparently she knows a bunch of them), so the NJ Planning Committee IS working hard on it. There's even a possibility that they may purchase their own flooring to go over the ice.
Regardless, you have to prepare for the cold because it will still be on top of ice. IT WILL BE COLD, there's nothing we can do about that. Our team wears 2 pairs of socks and a sweatshirt/long-sleeved shirt underneath our team shirts. We all know it sucks, but at least you KNOW about it. Which means you can take the appropriate actions to better protect yourself.

Actually, they promised to replace the flooring as a part of the contract a while ago, to the best of my knowledge. But that promise was made every year. I want a regional at College ave/Rutgers!

Technically it was never a contract. After the first year or so we said that we'd like a new floor, and SBA said that they would accomodate us, so far they haven't lived up to their end of the bargain. Like Sara said, it's an ice rink, there's nothing really we can do about the floor. Just come prepared and dress in layers...you can always take layers off, but you can't magically create clothes at the arena.
And as for College Ave/Rutgers. The NJ regional is held right during Basketball season, so the RAC is pretty much out...and if we went back to College Ave then the NJ regional would then be smaller than the NYC regional of past years where there were only 26 or so teams.

Simply put, we don't FIT in the College Ave gym anymore.
I am going to suggest that we find out if we can use the basketball floor. My mom made a good point that we are between two hockey games and they probably don't want to switch the floors, but they are doing it for the Harlem Globetrotters the next week, so maybe they'll do it for us too. I'll bring it up, but I can't make any promises.
Frankly, it isn't NJ FIRST that's letting you down, it's the SBA who can't be bothered to solve the problem. FIRST is coming up with as many temporary solutions as we can, but the SBA has sort of tied our hands.

Hot off the presses, the issue of the floor has been resolved at SBA!
If memory serves me right, we had a horrible cardboard flooring at SBA last year, which not only disintegrated and was a horrific tripping hazard.
This year we will still have that down on the floor (SBA supplies that since it's their ice rink) but NJ FIRST will be putting down Masonite sheeting on top of the cardboard flooring which will significantly decrease not only the dust but will also provide a much safer foundation on which to walk on.
Last year's floor was a Homasote product: http://www.homasote.com/id.html

What are my chances of getting sick
Depends upon how often you wash your hands and/or use Purell.
We concluded last year that it was less a function of the venue and mroe a function of the way Viruses and Bacteria spread from host to host.
I'm proud that I did not get sick, despite spending virtually all of my time in the pits - but I did wash my habds at least 15 times a day all three days, wore gloves a lot, and even then was super careful about NOT touching my mouth, nose, eyes, etc.
See you there!

Thanks for all the offers to help. We appreciate it. We chose NJ because of teams 11 and 25 and the fact that our team chose to go to NY afterwards. We didnt do a NYC regional due to time schedule conflicts with our students taking finals.
What makes our trip more expensive is chartering a bus to take us from NJ on a tour of New York after, including stops to the Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building tours, for a total of 6 hours. Then we are staying near Times Square for 3 days to enjoy NY.
Total cost for 25 people. $37,000 not including spending money.:(
Our team members are also on our Electric Vehicle team. We spent November in NY and raced in New Hampshire also.
Then our team flys back home and go back 2 1/2 weeks later to Vegas for our second regional, then come home and possibly go back 3 weeks later to Atlanta for the championships.

The weather will be (relatively) warm, low to mid '40s during the day, high 20's to low 30's at night, with rain on Friday tapering off Saturday early.

Before I get to the list I'm bringing my digital camera, so anyone who wants to get a picture taken with me, I'd be more than willing to strike a pose.
Now onto my list...in no particular order
341
237
25

75
177
this list could go on for a while, but the point is, no matter which way you slice it...the competition is stacked.

yeah im gonna add 375 to that list, they've been in the finals 2 years in a row now... and also 303 is generally pretty good, i expect to see them near the top if not in the top 8,
I was surprised to see that 56 wont be attending this year. They were always good competition at the event, I wonder why they decided not to come...
how mentors actually go to rutgers? i do, and i am wondering what the rest of you are doing as far as class goes.. i know dean rankin does alot of stuff with the event so do you get excused absences if you have assignments due and things like that? I wont have a problem because i have fridays off and only a couple classes thurs, but I am wondering what all you people do

Well I just got home from the arena and I have to say...there sure are a lot of purdy crates in the back! And the floor looks quite nice. I can't wait for Friday, I'd go tomorrow but I have class all day (stupid teachers not letting me go)
See you all then!

See you all then!Yes, the nice folks at the Sovereign Bank Arena covered the homasote with a fresh layer of masonite, so no dust this year (so far). As of 10 PM when I left, the field was ready and the practice matches were being generated. See you bright and early in the morning.

I'm already recording it at the request of The Blue Alliance, and I can easily send it to SOAP.

in one of the last practice matches i watched 25, all alone for the blue alliance, dominating the match. they scored 5 tubes on the highest rack. they were going for their 6th but it fell off as the match ended. not sure if they were all in a row but they one the match 64-0.
So everyone, after one day of the regional, who are your top 8 teams?
coldfusion1279
01-03-2007, 20:07
after seeing a day of action (or well half a day at least, I had class this morning :/ ) heres some things that caught me by surprise...
1. the tubes are that easy to get on the rack, takes time and precision
2. not too many working autonomous programs yet, maybe people are hiding them, but still, not many even with all that talk about getting the cmu cam working
3. It takes alot longer than expected to climb a ramp
4. 75% of the teams there have ramps!
Sooo, all in all, the game reminded me alot of two years ago... the first day of the comp in 2005 was rather slow and it seemed like the tetras just werent a great idea for a game... but it turned out to be my favorite of them all.
Some top teams (that I saw);
25, 375, 75 looked promising, I didnt see too much tho being in the pit most of the time
Any robot pictures from today's competition?
Tom Bottiglieri
01-03-2007, 21:35
From what I saw on the webcast, 25 and 237 look pretty good.
I feel like 25s arm is going to snap off though! It wobbles ALOT...
I'll snag some pics and video tomorrow. I've got equipment on loan from AGHS :D
Look for the pale kid in the backwards fire helmet, yelling loudly.
237 scored a keeper at 2:41PM today.
We tweaked the autonomous a little bit and are expecting a LOT better results tomorrow.

heh, maybe the reason it wobbles is to keep it from snapping off

They weren't all alone, but pretty close to it. Our human player was throwing tubes onto the field while our robot was still in the pit.
I'm already recording it at the request of The Blue Alliance, and I can easily send it to SOAP.
Will the quality be any better tomorrow? It may have just been the distance of the camera from the field, but I was on a NASA computer and the picture quality was pretty poor, so I know it wasn't a connection issue.

It's pretty low-scoring in Jersey as well; get five or six hangs, not even in a row, and you generally win a match. Ramps alone don't seem to be saving anyone.
No clue on the scores, though.

8 on the middle row.
There are some low scoring matches, but I'd say there are good number of great scorers. I think the elims are going to be terrific.
25 looks to be the team to beat again this year...

For regional scores, you can browse through here http://www2.usfirst.org/2007comp/events/ (though the NJ scores don't seem to be up yet)
Edit: seems they don't like browsing so now you have to bring up individual pages whose links are now available on the FIRST site.

Yes- be confused
Team 25 IS the inventor of exploding bacon ice cream but you can shoot Wayne Penn for giving it that name.
We have a running "tradition" to initiate our dinner guests at team functions by telling the restaurant that it is their birthday. We also have a running gag of serving the Birthday Boy a sundae topped with bacon. Our last assistant coach had a birthday 6 times in three months.
I wanted to call it the Evil Sundae- but Penn took the lead.
He was the birthday boy last night......
