Hey all,

Looks like we're gonna have an interesting regional this year.

A couple of things add to this excitement. First, a move to a new venue (The Javits Center!!). We also got a couple of new teams attending, including another team from England, and we've got team 56 (Robbe Xtreme) registered, along with lots more teams pending (11, 422, and lots of others).

So who's planning on coming?

Feel free to discuss anything related to this regional in this thread, who's coming, who's going to win, and more, and more.

Yup, Team 11 is making our first appearance in New York!
It's going to be a different atmosphere for us. The past three years, we've gone south to Palmetto. We really love it down there; the people (and the weather!) are great, but for budget and travel reasons, we're going to the Big Apple this year. I don't know what took us so long, really. It's right around the corner.
I'm looking forward to a great competition, and I especially like the new venue. I was at the Javitts Center for NextFest, and it's great, but I do wonder about spectators. (Are there any stands there?)

DanDon
31-10-2006, 19:36
Apparently, we're going to be getting at least the amount of stands that there were at Riverbank (The previous venue.). But I hope that there will be more, because we're going to have about twice the number of teams attending.

Hopefully, they also decide to webcast the regional. ;)

Ok well here's my challenge to all teams in the NYC regional.

In the past the crowd excitement hasn't really been up to par with other regionals. And now with a bigger venue we need the excitment to be bigger than ever. If you guys do your part to make things intense, I'll do my part by entertaining you as co-MC.

Deal?

DanDon

YEA!! LET'S GET PUMPED!!!!

Come on guys, you got the friendly rivalry down pat, lets show it by cheering your voice away.

NYC is always fun, but I can't wait to see what a bigger venue brings to this event! Additionally, and I bet you didn't know there will be the first ever Science & Technology Career Fair! Which is ....awesome. So if you have a free minute at the event, you can talk to companies who are looking for employees to do exactly what you're interested in!

Still, it sort of weirds me out that the regional is Friday - Sunday this year. But, if that was the cost of getting the Javit's, then I'm all for it !

Question for all. Does anyone know why the regional goes from Friday to Sunday?

I'd assume that those were the only available dates for the arena, so FIRST had not other choice but to set those dates.

Corey Balint
01-11-2006, 18:38
I'd assume that was the only time FIRST was able to book the arena for the NYC regional.
Thats what I had assumed too. But I wanna see if anyone has anything concrete.

Last year it was because of the NCAA tournament. They didn't have enough time to setup everything, I guess.

Currently, the Javits Center site has nothing around that time, just stuff in the first week of march. But yeah, I can see how thats most probably what it is.

Wrong concrete evidence I was talking about. haha.
I meant concrete as in why it is indeed Friday-Sunday.

And you were the man I knew would answer.
Was the reason that its Friday to Sunday just because of the Javits Center openings?

Correct! Because of the loading and unloading of equipment, Friday-Sunday was the only days available to NYC FIRST.

More great news from our New York City 2007 FIRST Robotics Competition Jacobs Javits venue!!!

Javits Wireless Internet Access

Wireless access is currently available throughout the Javits Convention Center. The service can accommodate one computer per connection and can only be subscribed to on site from the computer that will be accessing the Internet. Pricing is as follows (prices are subject to change):

56K bandwidth: $4.95 per hour
$29.95 per show day
$69.95 per three show days

256K bandwidth: $650 per seven show days

It is up to the customer to be familiar with using wireless services, as we do not offer technical support for connectivity issues.

Basic Connection Steps:

1. Turn on your wireless ready computer (from your booth or anywhere within the Javits Center) and select the "Javits" wireless access point.
2. Open up your internet browser and the sign up page will appear.
3. Please provide all the correct credit card and address information, otherwise the system will decline the credit card transaction, and the user will get locked out of the wireless network for the same duration of time they were trying to sign up for. (We therefore suggest that customers attempt to buy a (1) hour package first, so that if the card declines for any reason the user will only be locked out for (1) hour.)

Please be aware that VPN is not supported on our wireless network. We do not sell wireless cards or any other wireless accessories here on site.

The Javits wireless system is used primarily by our attendees and exhibitors to check email and browse the Internet. If you are planning to utilize the wireless network for an important core function within your booth we recommend that you call us prior to the event to discuss why our wired high-speed Internet options might be a better fit for your company.

Okay, it's not free, but if you need it, it's there!
Good luck! See you all on Sunday!

I think I'll be making my way up to The City tomorrow with my grandfather, it depends on the weather a bit I suppose, but as it stands now I have a good shot on getting there. I hope to see some great action at the Javits Center, its a great venue and my Grandfather not only helped build it, but he also helped set up the trade shows that came in all the time. I wonder what his thoughts would be on setting a regional up...Anyway I hope to see some great action from one of the fastest growing regionals.

I have some pictures from the NYC Regional on setup day and let me tell you there is plenty of room all around. Everything is safely spaced from one another and you don't feel as if your crowded in anyway. There are "RUMORS" that in '08 there may be 2 fields with a bit more teams on register (hopefully if this years event ends successfully), possibly a FLL or FVC competition as well. As of right now we are using a "BRAND NEW" field straight out of NH which means we had little to no bugs in setting up the field and running our 1st. day of Qualifying Rounds.

Congrads to all the teams who won their well deserved and hard earned awards on the first day of competing and I hope to see an even better day of qualifying on sunday.

The top score as of right now in NYC is 260, lets see if we can beat it in NYC Regional and all around the globe.

I just got home, and my legs are about to fall off and my throat feels like sand paper, but I have to say that this was one of the best NYC regionals we've ever had. The excitement couldn't be matched, and some of the finishes to elims were insane!

Congrats to 1302 for taking home their second win in as many regionals, and 354 for finally breaking over the hump and taking the gold.

And to 2274, They're a great ramp bot, and even though they're rookies, watch out for them in Atl!

Just got back from the NYC Regional as well, Thanks to George and Wayne for keeping the level of excitement way up there. Thanks to all the teams who came and participated and congradulations to all those who went home with some well earned awards. If anyone was watching on NASA's webcast you may have heard Dean emphasize on how much he would like to make the NYC Regional the biggest one in the country which means a good possibilty with the right Regional Sponsorship could buy us 2 fields and expand. The Javitts Center as I and many others have said is HUGE and can easily accomodate another 20 - 30 teams as well as another field setup.

BTW George you missed it - The A/V crew starting lowering the Lights and half way through the bank of lights it snapped in 2. The only thing holding together was the power cables to the lighting. Fortunately no one was hurt nevertheless a heart stopper. Looks like we ended just in time.

I just got back, and it was a REALLY fun event.

Congratulations to all teams that were there, y'all did great!

Wayne, I'm still a little miffed at you for completely humiliating me on the field, but i think i'll get over it :p

Wayne & George did an amazing job keeping everyone excited and focusing on the field, even if some of it WAS at my expense...:)

Overall, a really great event to visit. Hopefully next year will be even bigger & better!

Awesome regional from what I saw yesterday, the space the that Javit's center gives you gives you a lot of options to play with, and I know it's minor, but the match queuing space being so large was really nice, I wish every regional was set up the way it was. I like the idea of 2 fields and more teams, that could be a lot of fun. Oh did anyone get to stop by the MAKE table? They ran a pretty big (http://www.makezine.com/blog/archive/2007/03/make_is_the_new_york_city.html) article on their blog, Pretty cool stuff I had fun and the teams looked good.

the only bad part is the camera angle. The view of your flip was *much* better from where MORT was sitting :)

Thanks to both you and Libby for being such great sports:)

Perhaps next years NJ FLL can have a flip and dancing? *hint hint*

I have to admit that NYC was better than I thought, but George, did you like announcing at the NYC regional of the NJ regional more? I personally liked NJ because it has a greater crowd capacity. That was the one thing that the Javitz lacked. I have to admit that the extra space everywhere was really convininent, especially in the pits where you could spill over the back boundary and into the isle.

Another question for you George. When did you discover that you had a talent for announcing? You have the perfect voice for it and i was just wondering how you have become the voice of NJ (and NY)?

hey dhoizner, I was just on another thread about unusual ways of accepting an alliance selection besides " Team (Your name Here) graciosly accepts." and then I remembered that you said something unusual at the NYC alliance selections. What was it? (possibly a Borat quote)?

Well It's good to know I have at least a couple fans out there. I really do feed off the crowd to try to make the matches exciting. As far as which regional I like more? Hard to say, NJ has always had a place in my heart since It's my "home regional" and in the past NYC has been seriously lacking in the spirit department. So this year I'll admit, I was a little apprehensive when I went into NYC because in the past it was just so hard to get excited when the kids themselves weren't excited.

This year changed all that and I have a new found love for NYC FRC. Next year, if NYC grows like they're hoping...things should be really interesting.

Another question for you George. When did you discover that you had a talent for announcing? You have the perfect voice for it and i was just wondering how you have become the voice of NJ (and NY)?

Yet another interesting question. Ever since my first FIRST competition (VCU in 2001) I've wanted to be an announcer, so in 2004 (my senior year) after the Championships I asked a couple people at PARC if I could announce a few matches. They let me, and I found out I had a knack for it. After that I started bugging everyone hosting an offseason competition in the area if I could announcer. Eventually more and more people let me do it, and I signed up to be a Game Announcer at the NJ regional in 2005. I was slated to be the 2nd back up (there was a Game Announcer, then his backup, then I backed up the back up.) They don't let first years announce the whole shebang so I was hoping for 2 or 3 matches tops. As luck would have it neither of the two people ahead of me couldn't make the event. So I got the mic thrust into my hands with a "good luck, don't screw up too much". I did it and as it turns out I did a good job I guess. At the end Big Mike dubbed me the "Voice of New Jersey" Randy Shaeffer overheard that and Introduced me as such. Ever since then I've added each state I've worked in and Tony Paxton (Volunteer coordinator for NYC) asked if I'd do NYC the following week. I agreed and I've been working various regionals ever since.

George,
You rock. You are always ready to pick up after the end of my mic calls and you make the matches that much more exciting. I'm really glad and honored to be working with the Voice of NJ at multiple regionals this year!!!

He was suppose to do it this year but instead he coached us.
He's the best
He helped us get the GOLD!

I dissappear for a couple of days and return back only to find the Video link to the intermission. And of course I just had too watch it. Again and again. I look like a dork towards the end of the clip (except those who know me I bet you can't figure out which person is me.) Just think Libby - If you haden't gone through with this Andrew would have done it and then he would've dragged me into it. Thank you for being the sacrificial lamb =) j/k. Besides you didn't look that bad in the video as a matter of fact I think you and George did great with the whole dancing thing.

One question I do have is where did Wayne come up with that Dance Routine?
