Also, I don't have to worry about taping it because of every second of that show is put on youtube nearly right away.

OH GOD!!!!

guys.....you gotta help me out here. I've a class from 7:20-10:00 (pm), and by the time I'll get to my downtown apartment it will be like 12 or even after. If someone can post a link to YouTube over here, after the show, that would be AWESOME!

(Finally i got something to look forward to at work for Friday morning :p )

Not anymore the copyright lawyers took them down last week as well as the Daily Show. And shortly thereafter, Viacom allowed YouTube to leave the clips up for the time being, as they wanted to work out a deal.

Granted, such uploads might be a little touch-and-go until a deal is reached.

It's my understanding that the Report originates from New York City, so 25 and 522 are both in the neighborhood.

And 395 perhaps? ;)

I doubt FIRST will be involved much (of course that means it will), my guess it'll be more about the Segway.

Question: Will Colbert ride on a segway over to the interview area?

I highly doubt that this is going to be a FIRST related visit, I would put money on this being a talk about the water machine or new segway. If FIRST gets mentioned it will only probably be 1 sentance.

Agreed.
Itll all be about the Segway, and for the most part, Colbert mocking it. Reguardless, Colbert is always funny, so it'll be a good show.

One of the interesting things about the Colbert Report is to see how much he tries to actually back each guest into a corner. Usually when he has a politician or member of the media, he will do everything he can to get them to become flustered or say something they don't mean. However, when Ned Lamont, the challenger to Lieberman for the Connecticut Senate seat was on the program, Colbert didn't try to hardball him at all. In fact, it almost seemed as if the questions Colbert were asking were softballs.

I wonder how Colbert feels about the advancement of science and technology in America. I predict he will ridicule the Segway, but then I bet he will back off and let Dean get out his message.

So what if Steve Colbert is using this opportunity to announce his sponsorship of a new FIRST team - similar to his sponsorship of a youth hockey team. How 'bout that for an awesome sponsor?

It would be fun to see Dean pour some nasty liquid into the top of the water machine, wait a few minutes while Colbert yacks about how nerdy the Segway is and blah blah, then take a drink of the machine's output and challenge Colbert to do the same! :D

A great interview with Dean tonight. Quite possibly one of the best outings from Dean that I've seen in a while. He was very lively, funny, and quick with a response. I think we need Colbert prompting him at the awards ceremonies. (HA!)

As far as products and projects, Dean talked about the IBot, FIRST, and a soldier "vertical assist" device, as well as mentioning the Dialysis Machine and Insulin Pump. Quite a bit to discuss in a 5 minute interview. I'm sure someone else will post a full transcript about it, so I'll end my play-by-play here.

Anyways, I'm glad I stayed awake for it. I highly recommend finding a way to watch a recording of it.

Dean did very well. And Colbert, measured relative to his treatment of some guests, seemed to be throwing Dean softballs. Of course, Dean is a slugger, and maybe Colbert wasn't prepared for that.

Colbert's score using the Fantasy Colbert League (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49148) point system would be pretty low for this one.

Maybe I'm just the sour apple of the group, but I don't really find Steven Colbert that funny; I could stand him when he was on the Daily Show and would do segments. I thought he mocked the message that Dean was trying to portray, and Dean was just quick with the comebacks. I don't know, maybe it's just I've never seen Mr. Kamen in a humorous role before, and this was a little startling. I mean Colbert's comments (albeit in humor) were borerline rude. Like "We could put a hemi in this thing" "Do the students build combat robots?" and then the whole thing about the mexicans was a little politically incorrect.
However even with the comments, Dean did a pretty good job explaining FIRST and his inventions.
Just my own $.02..
Let the bad rep start flowing.

I believe the point of the show is that he is mocking all of the ignorant, single minded media shows. The humor is in the fact that he is acting and his "opinions" and questions are slightly outrageous and closed minded.

The Colbert Report is satire, not humor. Of course, there is a mean-spirited minority that actually agrees with some of Colbert's outrages, and those nit-wits might view him as funny. The rest of us are laughing with Colbert as he mocks the nit-wits. And he does it well!

Colbert has sometimes just nailed the guests to the point that nothing they could say would make them look right. Usually these people are politicians or people with strong views. Kamen isnt the type of person he usually has on. I think the fact that Kamen is all good (he invents to better mankind, unlike the scandles and lies of politicians) so Colbert didnt have as much to get Dean with.

Wow, Colbert really disapointed me this time. I haven't watched him for awhile, but he seemed to be grasping for material. Not so much Dean's interview, but most of the rest of the show. I was impressed at his responses however- Dean handled himself (and promoted FIRST), very well I thought. That whole segment was rather tame, but made Colbert and Dean look a little better for it.

Greg Marra

That whole segment was rather tame, but made Colbert and Dean look a little better for it.

I would have loved to see some footage from an actual FIRST event. I think it's very easy for viewers to go "oh yea robots" and just shrug it off, but if they had shown video of what FIRST is actually like and provided the URL for the FIRST website, they would have gotten a bunch of extra publicity. None of Colbert's guests usually have video though, so maybe they weren't willing to let Dean show any.

galewind
10-11-2006, 23:46
y'know, as "off" as Colbert was on that, I honestly think he was doing a "good thing" by having Dean on there. Having read and watched a bit about Colbert's non-television life, I honestly think he's a bit of an idealist like Dean. That being said, having him on the show is a bit more difficult because, as someone suggested, there's not much comedy in it. But think of how many people may have actually thought, if only briefly, to consider the concept of encouraging America's youth to solve tomorrow's problems.

I honestly believe that both Colbert and Dean would want to see that happen. While Colbert makes his money in comedy, I think he's a lot more well-grounded and idealistic than his persona leads people to believe.

Having him ride around in the iBot was better than any FIRST video. Colbert couldn't hide how cool it is. In my opinion, that invention represents FIRST more than the FRC entries. The robots are a tool to motivate High School kids to build stuff like that.

Sorry to disagree, but I didn't enjoy this too much.
It all seemed a little staged — as if DK paid to be promoted on the Report and Colbert had to write the interview around that, for example that Colbert's banter about the iBot carefully highlighted all its good points.

Also, DK could seriously have done better. He didn't have to respond to the question about fighting robots with a drawn out explanation of why they're graciously competing. It would've been more interesting for the audience to admit that they're "fighting" and then clarify that it's not a destructive battle and that there's no team rivalry. Am I the only one to feel this way?

A bonzer vid! I think Colbert (err....Colbert's character) was lost for words in that. Either way, I think it gave FIRST a really good spot.

But Colbert has to show up at a RANDOM FRC in 07 to back up the spot he gave about FIRST.

I actually tried out that iBot for myself. Let me say, it is A BEAST! If they added a seat elevator to that. It's niceness times 1000 and I would try to enter the lottery JUST so I could win enough money to buy one of those bad boys.

yeah, that would be pretty fun. but i doubt colbert would do that...

I'm pretty sure its not Beatty Engineered and Student Tweaked (i thought DK made it) :p

I enjoyed the clip, although i'm sad that I can't add it to my promotional video, with all the different setbacks. I'm sure people would love to see DK on Colbert Report...

I absolutely love how everytime someones making the world a better place, colbert informs them that they're helping the terrorists too (not only with dean's interview, but on the Daily Show with the release of Harry Potter, "Because when children read, everyone wins.")
