The Russian space agency recently participated in a shameless publicity stunt (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061123/sc_nm/space_golf_dc_1) to raise money.
The American team (http://www.nasa.gov/externalflash/nasa_gen/index.html) has other funding sources. My favorite quote from the article: "NASA, the American space agency, is prevented by law from receiving money for its involvement."
Alan Sheppard did something similar about 35 years ago, but there was no money in it back then.
