You know, I'm kind of curious as to that "game hint". Is it really the hint for the 2007 game, or not? If not, when is the real game hint coming out? I know in the past the hint has been a riddle, so I don't think that this is the real hint. Anyone know?

Don't listen to Joe. He's just having fun.

There will be a special thread just for next years game hint.

I give it about a week after money is due.

Last year it came out the 23 of December, so don't expect it for a few weeks still.

I think the GDC realises how much we obsess over these, and releases the game hint later so we only lose 2 weeks of sleep as opposed to a whole month.

Well, I just got back from "breaking into" FIRST HQ. The game looks pretty cool, gotta love the electrified field border, watch out for defense, the pneumatic cannon that launches bananas all over the field, which isn't underwater like most think but, reminiscent of 1992,the field is coated with red blue and white rubber fish, thus making stopping really interesting. the scoring objects are quite interesting, who would have thought, nuts and bolts could be so much fun.... especially when they fall underneath the rubber fishes....

i think 2007 will be the best year yet

From a programming aspect, I believe I have heard that this will be the most tedious year yet. As well, the robot will be required to distinguish between three colours of lights, instead of one. Again, this is just what I have heard. .don't listen to me for sure. My guess is as good as anyones

I think that the mailboxes (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41123&highlight=mailboxes) seen last winter will be used...

Acutally, I highly doubt some of those things will be used. Water in, say, a Victor or RC is not going to be good.

that could turn out to be a small problem for most teams... hm....

my guess is that the water will not actually be part of the playing field, because it would be too dangerous for those $1000 controllers and $200 victors. Maybe they will just surround the field, so that the drivers have a terribly hard time seeing what's going on.

Just my 2 cents

All this water talk..

For all those who like to think about a water based game:

I remember reading somewhere that in 1993 FIRST used water filled balls as a game piece. True?

If the GDC really wanted to, then they would probably be able to find a reasonable way to use water.

Whatever this game is, I hope its BIG. By that I mean: not simple (like 2005 and 2006), not complex (2003 was simple, but stacking boxes was not), not overly flashy (I have yet to see this, 2004 was pretty good, visually), not plain (2001 and 2002), but elegant, and engaging enough for the audience to say, "I don't even care that I can't keep score, this is so exciting." Of course, I think everyone has that wish.

I missed the boat on game suggestion this year.. whatever.

IMO:

2004 was the best year for HPs (they were responsible for a good chunk of the scoring).
2006 was one of the better years for programmers (autonomous mattered, camera alignment with the goal).
The coaches and drivers have been pretty busy in the last few years, so they are probably all set (2005 and 2001 were both better than average for coaches, and arguably 2006, 2000, and, heh, 2003, were the best games for drivers).

So I'm hoping for a game in which the human player does 50% of the direct scoring, the results of autonomous have a weighty impact on the proceedings of the game, the coaches have to be "on their game," to know how to best direct the drivers and human players to score, and the drivers have an interesting time getting objects to score with, or getting the human players time to score. Like, the opponents could have some significant incentive to block another alliance's robot from scoring, or being able to score, but also have a good incentive to try to score themselves. That way, instead of having defensive and offensive periods, you have only one period, and competing teams naturally align themselves for defense or offense. I'm also hoping for a shared end-zone (like 2003), that robots have to fight over. Make it like musical chairs: you have six robots on the field, but only enough space for 4 or 5 robots. With many things mashed together to have all members of a field crew occupied, point distributions become key, eh? Like, the points awarded for completion of each game task would have to be weighted optimally across the board, to prevent teams from becoming overly biased to one strategy over another. For example (this is kinda weak), 1pt scoring was almost a moot point last year. Other than perhaps 322 and a few others, most one point scorers only survived if they were good at defense. In 2004, hanging could win you the match. If a hanging robot was worth 25 points, instead of 50, things may have been a bit more interesting (just speculating).

I dunno. I think this post got so off-topic, that it probably should be moved to another thread. eh..

This has been pointed out quite a few times before, however keep in mind that the shapes in the logo are pretty much the most basic shapes that exist. Almost any game piece can be viewed as one of these shapes or a combination of them. So while your statement is valid it really doesn't narrow the choices of a game piece down. Besides the fact that there are rumors that the logo next year will be a Fish (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41024&highlight=clown) a banana (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50045&highlight=banana) and a mailbox (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41123&highlight=mailboxes)

I remember reading somewhere that in 1993 FIRST used water filled balls as a game piece. True?

It is. There were 6" balls filled with water worth 1 point a piece, and 13" balls worth 5 points a piece. Each team had it's own PVC goal corral. The 6" balls could be rolled in but the 13" balls were requiring to be lifted in. It's also worth noting that robots were smaller back then, with maximum dimensions of a 3 foot cube (which is very difficult to fit through a regulation size door :D ).

I looked this stuff up on first-a-holics after I wrote this post and found it all to be correct (I wasn't even 2 when this game was played)... :o

Dave Lavery was seen at purchasing a bag of chips at the market yesterday. There is a high probability that the 2007 game will involve grabbing, much as a person grabs the potato chips out of a bag. Also, the chips were priced at 2.50 per bag (he bought two bags), which suggests that there will be five people on the field with one team alternating between teams, like a freelancer. Lavery also used paper, not plastic, to bag his chips. Paper is manufactured from trees. Trees come from the forest, and forests get their water from rivers and rain. Will the 2007 competition involve water?

i heard from a very reliable source that the 'rubber fish' are actually chickens, because everyone knows that rubber fish aren't very awesome, whereas rubber chickens are sweet. the statement about nuts and bolts actually means that we can't use nuts and bolts to fasten anything to the robot, and that the entire frame must be held together using ONLY zip-ties and duct tape (what can't u hold together w/ those things?). Nuts and bolt-heads are 6 sided, so there will be 6 robots, 3 teams of 2 just to make things more interesting for those not playing. Nuts and bolts are threaded, so there will be a platform in the center of the field which may only be ascended by the sets of curving ramps (like the threaded portion of a bolt) The final portion of my intel is a secret, the price being your life....you have been warned

I think the chances of the game involving catching live chickens is as likely as another Rocky movie. Since one is coming out, here goes...

This year we'll need to collect live chickens that have been painted 3 different colors (red, white, and, blue). There will be 20 red, 10 white, and 1 blue chicken, worth 5, 10, and 50 points respectively. Catching a chicken in auto mode is worth 2x (making the blue chicken in auto worth 100pts!!!!). In order to score, the chickens must be placed in a coral at the home end of the field.

The following isn't confirmed, but I've heard you may be able to steal chickens from the other team, but that's just a rumor.

They didn't forget the human element, as after the robots play for 2 minutes, the human players take over and play the same game for 1 minute.

I can't wait for the game, or to see Sly Stallone at the kick-off!!!
