I didn't see anyone start this one yet, so I guess I'll start it, with some news:

For the first time in Team 66's history (if my memory serves me right), we are coming to the Buckeye Regional.

Me, a bit excited: 2 times out of state for my senior year, YAY!!!

Anywho, just thought I would share the news, and start up a thread, sitting here with nothing to do in class at the moment.

I know 772 is very excited to be attending the Buckeye regional for the first time!!! We usually do Waterloo that weekend, so this will be quite the change in terms of the number of teams and in the sense that we have only seen a few of these teams at the regional level before.

I'm still not sure which regionals I'll personally be attending (ie. taking time off of work for), but I have family in Ohio so I might check it out! Though Waterloo would be a little easier to deal with (20 minute walk)...

When it's held at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? In the words of the immortal DS&TKB - Rock and Roll All Night, Robots Every Day. The first year at the Rock Hall was great. Ah, the good old days.

But the team list for Buckeye is starting to look REALLY good.....

1675 and 1714 are coming back from Milwaukee. The Ultimate Protection Squad is hoping to do a little better than seeding last this year, but as long as fun as had, it will be a blast. Does anyone know anything about the Social yet? My first year there in 2003 at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame was awesome, but the Science Museum wasn't too bad either.

See you in March!

yea we're excited to meet you too. Actually that was one of the pluses when we signed up for Buckeye. :D We all want to meet the team that signed up right before us giving us our number of 1676.

Also I can't wait to meet the teams from the ohio area. Since I've never been to nationals with the team most of the teams i know are from the new jersey or south carolina areas.

OK, so now we're under 3 weeks away. It'll be way cool to meet 1675 - I hope we're together inthe pits - and to meet Koko Ed in person.

Who else going to be there? Everyone, be sure to stop in to 1676 and say Hello!

As Huey Lewis & the News noted, "The heart of Rack N Roll is in Cleveland".

This announcement is of the "no duh" ilk, but Team 48 will once again be going to the Buckeye Regional, as we have since its inception in 2002.

I welcome this year's team list as one of the more competitive I've seen at the event.

393 will be there, for our first time. We had some major issues at VCU, but we're going to overhaul and be ready to Rack & Roll at Buckeye. Looking forward to seeing everyone, especially 1743 from Pittsburgh. We ran against y'all in the finals at Pitt last year, and I'm looking forward to seeing what you're bringing this year.

stats i just found:

65,66,70,451,494,503,548,1188,1213,1286,1528...all at GLR (11 teams)

65,66,70,94,494,503,548,1188,1213,1286,1528, 1684...all MI teams (12 teams)

27 teams from oh are attending Buckeye

12 teams from mi are attending Buckeye

27 of 32 teams from OH are attending Buckeye

55 of 108 teams from MI attended GLR

now i am trying to find stuff on chairmans awards but i cant seem to find anything about it. also regionsl wins and stuff. so if people can help me out i would appreciate it.

oh and from what i remember, GLR has 6 championship winners and Buckeye has 4 and they are all from Michigan.

(This post was posted with no disrespect for Ohio and/or their teams, they are just facts that i have gathered.)

Looking forward to the teams in Cleveland, this will be a large step up from Pitt last week. I am curious to see how the game plays out with a much bigger field, also looking forward to playing again with the teams that were in Pitt - as long as 48 has their ramps on, there is no eye protection required in the stands, if they pull them off - be ready to duck! :yikes:

You can all come visit 48's pit at the same time - it's always fun to try and get our "Captain Safety" to have a nervous breakdown. :D

If someone suggests a good place and time, I'll stop by. If I forget (I'm old), feel free to come drag me out of my pit.

We are returning to the Buckeye Event for the first time in a few years...
For you seasoned Buckeye vets, are the pre-order meals (lunch) worth the expense? Our team will have a bus, but do not want to travel far from the event center during the lunch break. Are the concessions priced the same as pre-order? Are there any local restaurants that are capable of handling the FIRST lunch rush?
Also, any reccomendations from locals for a good pizza dinner for us?
Thanks!

On the topic of the Mini web-hug, how about at the Team Social on Friday night at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? It kind of is the idea of a social anyway, and what better time to hang out.

Cody Carey
20-03-2007, 22:41
That would work out for the majority of us, but team 306 will be at a mini team social with two or three other teams :D

When we came up in 2005 to visit me and the kids I came up with went out to lunch. There's a Burger King and a KFC nearby. Most likely there's some sort of pizzareia nearby. The neighborhood is not the greatest and if you wander too far you may lose track of where you are (you know how cities are some grided oddly with one way streets and such and next thing you know you are the other side of town). I reccomend using mapquest or Google Earth to search out nearby resteraunts.

I know, I can not be the only the only person with people they know going but can not make the trip them selfs for one reason or another.
I do get strange looks when people see the matches playing in the background on my computer. Not much is said until I lose it and start yelling at the monitor.

I can't believe this... one of the best regionals and nobody is doing a webcast!
I saw it on NASA's list too... just like them, full of promises, not so much at doing it.

Major bummer! :(

Buckeye is going to be one of the best regionals on display this year!
Not only are there alot of award winning robots and teams on displaybut many of them are doing their second regional so they are battle tested and ready for action (instead of spending all practice day in the pits getting fixed or trying to pass inspection). THe Eliminations should be a particular treat!

I will be recording all the action this weekend and hand it over to Ellery to edit. He's a pretty busy guy with school and all so that he's taking what little time he has to edit all these videos for you guys ought to get a collective Attaboy form the whole lot of you!

I'm sad I won't be there for Buckeye because it is looking like its going to be an incredible year for it. So many good teams, and quite a few too. One short of 60.

If someone sees Ed down there make sure he changes the tapes in time. So nothing get cutoff. I also try to keep the clips long enough till the score shows up but at FLR there were a few very long Referee discussions that made a few of the clips extra long. I just started my next quarter so it may take some time to convert all this when Ed get's it to me.

Well I wish I was there, sounds like the practice rounds went real well for the X-CATS and looks like our autonomous is ready to run.

I just started my next quarter so it may take some time to convert all this when Ed get's it to me.

Well I wish I was there, sounds like the practice rounds went real well for the X-CATS and looks like our autonomous is ready to run.

Most definately I'll be going back and forth all day (I hope the scouting team got the VCR hooked up. I don't know when exactly we're getting there).
I still have the FLR brodcast on my DVR at home so I can record the missing files and get them to you.

HAHA. Thanks for pointing 174 out for me. It wasn't needed though.

Its rather funny cause when I called them at lunch they said they were 3rd seeded. Now I think they lied or something in their bragging to me caused an effect.

Obviously the teams I knew would be on top are on top. Great job to them. It seems that the older teams are finally making their stand against the new teams.

Defense is uber-crazy! 48 is now reffered to as "The Aluminum Magnet" on CRT :D

Along with that, we have a few choice nick-names for some other teams:

"The arm destroyer."
"The Battery Ripper."
and last but not least, "White on Rice."

:D Over-all, we were plagued with minor problems all day... but we spent lots of time today and went over EVERYTHING, so now that we have a problem-fee robot, you should be seeing some pretty high scores from us.

I believe that most of the reason we always get defended by everybody is because we kept on putting up sevens on practive day. :p
Shoulda waited 'till qualifiers.

LOL that just might have to find its way onto the robot somewhere.

By the way, several robots were able to move the rack today. I swear we pushed the rack sideways about a foot during one match. This wasn't a dynamic contact hit - it was done when pushing a robot against the rack from a dead stop - did they grease the bottom of that thing or what? :ahh:

Nice change of pace to see the Top 8 loaded with veterans. Some of the rookies are still managing to make a positive impact, though.

So far, it's been a very entertaining and competitive event. My parents visited a FIRST regional for the first time, and they really enjoyed the gameplay.

I 4 1 miss seeing matches with six capable robots, or even six not-so-good, robots, battling it out. :(

Oh well, there's still the elims. Maybe we'll see a good match-up or two near the end.

When the matches are finally uploaded to SOAP I HIGHLY recommend you guys watch match 58 immediately for an incredible show of teamwork to neutralize a terrific offensive bot. 48 and 772 drove over to 1126's side of the field and turned sideways and slid back and forth to deny them and 2252 access to the rack. It was brilliant defense that didn't require overly aggressive ramming or anything like that. It was a true work of art.

Travis, you aren't the only one who has noticed that the rack is definitely moving around the field a bit more here. It only takes one person to spin the rack before each match at Buckeye, as opposed to the four we had in Pittsburgh. Is this rack missing something, or is it just getting worn down?

I would also like to send a sincere thanks to 1126, the BEST hanger in the place, for picking us and to 1528 for playing D and giving us a lift on your massive ramps when we needed it most. We had a blast in your alliance and wish you guys the best of luck!

537, thanks for picking both Martian teams. We loved playing with you guys. We played great up until the end. If anyone wants to see a cool autonomous mode, watch any of the matches that the three of us played, our turreted arms all rotated at the same time. Sparx and The Thunder Hawks, you guys are both great hangers, and 1528 was a good ramp as well. Congrats to the winners, CIA has a great hanger but what else would you expect, Delphi Elite is an AMAZING defensive robot with great ramps, and 379 played smart D and got up ramps easy. The playoffs were really good.

I second that comment... But I must say, you do not know fear until you are against them and see a Martian holding a spoiler, with 20 seconds on the clock, with the rack covered in a dense collection of red and blue. I'm gonna have nightmares about that! You guys were awesome, there was nobody else in the place that could manipulate as well as you two!

The one match that will stay with me forever was Quarter final 4 match 2, the number 6 alliance scored all blue tubes on the entire bottom row, a red alliance team placed a spoiler on the reduce the tube count to 7. And in the last 10 seconds the X-CATS removed the spoiler to capture 8 in a row for a 258 score, the highest score of the regional. The last match was also a classic with the outcome decided by 1 tube.

1126 and 1038 had already got on top of 1528 for their maximum score and that left us, 174 and 1507 free to score. Unfortunately all 3 teams went for the same spot and were fighting amongst themselves to score the last tube and basically used up all the time they had that no one had time to get the tube on.

wow that was a great regional to say the least. i am so proud of my alliance and my team! as an alliance we fought hard, adapted our strategy accordingly(such as 1507, 191, and 174 getting 8 on bottom, and when our amazing ramp and defense bot 1528 lost both their transmissions for the semis and finals)and did as well as we could! i am pleased by the way our 3 teams interacted! and congrats to my team on our design award!!! our first mechanical design award!!

Following 9+ years of regional futility and 5 previous heart-wrenching experiences of coming up short in the finals, this thank you post is going to be extra special....:)

For Team 48, it was exciting enough to win our first regional event EVER in our 10 years of existence. To share in the experience with our good friends, the Girard Robocats of Team 379, who operate about 15 minutes down the road from us and had also never won a regional.....well, I'd be lying if I said I didn't shed a tear or two as the final score of Finals 2 was announced.

Now on to the thank you's....

1126, 1038, 1528 - Even though you were a bit crippled by technical difficulties, you still put up a great effort. Your offensive skills displayed earlier in the elims were a thing to behold. Congrats on your Finalist achievement.

Team 291 - Thank you so much to #1 seed CIA for having enough faith in us to make Team 48 their #1 pick. You stuck with us despite some intermittent issues we had to fight throughout qualifying. I am so happy our robot could perform reliably for our alliance throughout the eliminations. Even as I was focused on our robot's defensive efforts, every time I turned to look at our side of the field, there you were, reliably and quickly putting up the rows of ringers we needed to make our final 2 @ 12 count. You've got a great robot and a great team filled with even greater people. Congratulations on your #1 seed performance and 2nd regional victory!

Team 379 - You guys simply rock - your kids, your school and corporate mentors, everyone. What a great robot and a smart drive team - you guys seriously know how to play the role of offensive/defensive hybrid. Take it from a guy who loves "smart" team defense - you guys can flat out PLAY! Congratulations on winning your first ever Regional competition! This past year, I've had the distinct pleasure of getting to know you guys better via programming classes and participation in your summer robotics camps, and this behind the scenes look has opened my eyes to the inner workings of the wonderful program you run. It's a great feeling watching all our area teams come together as a more cohesive unit, and I can sense we're on the verge of creating something truly special within our community. With Congressman Tim Ryan's help, I get the feeling FIRST is about to explode throughout the Mahoning Valley.

John, Dave, and Trevor - 48's Drive Team - You guys just absolutely floor me with the great skill, teamwork, and communication you display when working with our alliance partners, and I continue to love the fact you play the "right" kind of defense - the gentle yet massively frustrating for the opposition kind! :D Johnny - quite a driving performance from you in your first two events ever - Finalist and Champion? Not too shabby, rookie. Keep it up!

Team 48 Design and Build Teams - It may not be the most polished or complex robot out there, but it gets the job done. Kudos to you for pursuing a KISS design and helping it take shape out on the field. Keep up the good work!

Alliance Field Pit Crews - Great work keeping those machines running throughout the elims! Special kudos to long-time mentor George Lazar and alumnus Scott Rose for working with the drive team and the people back in the pits to keep all our bases covered.

Team 48 Collegiate Mentors - Thanks to the 10+ Team 48 alumni and Collegiate mentors for supporting the team at the Buckeye Regional, and to the many others back at home who couldn't make it out. As the number of Delphi mentors continues to grow smaller, our Collegiate Mentor Association has stepped up in a huge way, supporting almost every aspect of team operations. We owe a great deal of success to your efforts. Thank you all for your continued commitment, love, and support of Delphi E.L.I.T.E.

Chris Neifer - Chris has been Team 48's drive team coach since the beginning. Ask people like Karthik, and they'll tell you Chris is one of the best strategists in all of FIRST. He deserves a lot of the credit for guiding the team throughout the competition. Chris is close to retiring from the team to take on bigger responsibilities within his school district. I'm glad everything finally came together for us at Buckeye before he moves on.

Team 2010 - The Lightning Bots - Our "little brother" rookie team in Champion, OH, these guys have put together 2 very solid events in their rookie campaign, earning the Pittsburgh Rookie All-Star and the Highest Rookie Seed Award at Buckeye. Many of the mentors are veterans with experience from their days on Team 48, but the kids and school are rookies in the truest sense, and I'm very proud of all of them for enthusiasticly embracing the FIRST program and its goals. They are already positioned to share the lead with 48 and 379 as we work to expand FIRST in our community. They've also earned a trip to Atlanta, so everyone look out for them if they're in your division.

Team 1038 - Dang you guys are nice. You're just the friendliest and most helpful people you'd ever want to meet. Oh yeah, your robot kicks butt too! It's been really fun spending so much time together at Pittsburgh and Buckeye - I'm sure you're going to rock Atlanta's world once you get down to the Championship.

Team 276 - The Chaney Mad Cows are a persistent, hard working bunch, and they've been a part of our community for quite some time now. I'm looking forward to having them as a partner as the already established local teams seek to bring FIRST to more area schools (we already have interest for another rookie team next year).

Ken Patton and Team 65 - Great robot and great team! It's always a pleasure being at a regional with Ken - one of the best and most approachable mentors in FIRST. You guys gave us our greatest scare in the elims. You can definitely hang under duress. And don't worry - your team's secret is safe with me. I look forward to the day you let everyone in on it. ;)

Team 66 - Congrats on a well-earned Chairman's Award victory!

Team 1714 - Congrats on your Engineering Inspiration Award! So good at such a young age. And you battery charging station absolutely pwns.

Team 839 - Bungee cords for the win.

Buckeye Participants - Thanks for showing the world (once Ed posts the videos ;) ) that the Buckeye Regional ranks right up there with the best of them.

Buckeye Volunteers - Great venue + many great volunteers + outstanding referees and judges + awesome MC and announcer + a lot of hard work and preparation + AWESOME IFI SUPPORT + NO FIELD FAILURES = great time for all involved!

That statement is sort of shocking considering how great your robot was this year, not to mention how great your team is overall...

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Buckeye was by teh best regional I've ever seen, I'm so glad I got to see it. The matches were intense and I loved every minute I could spend watching them.

Thank you to the volunteers! The announcer was great, and everything was ran right on time.

Congratulations to all award-winning teams, with special congrats to 2031, the Rookie Inspiration award winner. Keep at it, guys, and you'll do great.

Congratulations Team 48 - Team 191 had a very similar experience back in 2005 winning our very first Regional in 13 years. We've always been one of the top competitors but just never been able to capitalize. We were ecstatic to win the Inaugural Finger Lakes Regional in our home town.

So definitely bask in the success - it's alot tougher these days.

With the strong robots that the two teams build (48 comes to mind especially), it has really been a long time coming. On a somewhat related note, 125 also had their first ever regional victory this weekend in Boston (this is their 10th year in competition).

"Gentle" being a relative term. Can a team be "gently aggressive"? I'd like to think so. Taking someone for a nice leisurely unintentional stroll across the field, pushing them on the corners to spin them around, or slowing down significantly before contacting other robots is far gentler than backing up 2+ robot lengths away and plowing full speed into the side of someone...repeatedly. Sadly, I see the latter style employed far too often.

This works for offense too - teams can certainly be "gently aggressive" as they wiggle and fight their way into scoring position against defensive pressure.

Travis Hoffman
26-03-2007, 00:43
As does 48.

I'm pretty certain 48 won the 1999 Championship @ Disney by sitting back and watching 176 and 1 work their magic in every single elimination round match. I believe our coach Chris Neifer lent his strategizing skills to the effort, but that was about it. This is based upon one veteran account. This was two years before I joined the team, so I have to rely upon witness accounts of the elimination matches for my information. If anyone else can recall the specific details of those elims, feel free to PM me. I'd like to learn more about this portion of our team's history, especially from other teams' perspectives.

They were playing nice there. Just look back at some of the defense 1038 pulled in 2004 if you want an example of not-so-nice defense.

Whoaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...... Screeeeeeech, let's stop this truck before it gains too much speed.

If you are holding a grudge against your team for something that purportedly happened years ago, I invite you to PM the team and communicate with them privately.
1038 competed with the utmost of class and skill at both regionals we've attended. Both as partners and as opponents, they've been absolutely wonderful to work with.
Please don't use this thread (or any thread) as a place to mention specific teams committing specific examples of "not-so-nice" defense. We know they still unfortunately occur from time to time, but this is not the place to single teams out. Please handle each indiviual matter discreetly and directly with the parties involved. I've been known to let my emotions get the better of me at times at events, and I sometimes deeply regret saying things in public that are better left for more private conversations....Now back to your regularly scheduled programming....

I know one involved a human player reaching through the tube chute in frustration to remove a stuck ringer from their arm (team number intentionally suppressed). The refs handled that well, I thought.

Team 63 played was scheduled to play with us (1714) in our last match on Friday (1714). We knew they had a yellow card from the field (for aggressive play I believe?), but when we went to strategize with them, they told us they had received a second yellow card after two random inspections and had been booted from the competition. There seemed to be a lot of confusion in and around their pit. Their robot was a double lifter robot that stayed folded up. If something got bent and was out of place for a few matches in the starting configuration, thats one thing. I didn't see too many places that robot could be bent though. They had passed inspection and I'm not sure what the random inspections were being used to check.

After they told us they were out, we prepared for a 2v3 match. When we were out on the field queuing, they came out with 2 matches to go and said they were being allowed to play, but weren't entirely sure what was going on. They played with us and played excellent defense to get us a win.

The next morning they played with my other team, 1675, and everything seemed to be well.

Thats all I know of the situation, and its just from an outsider's brief point of view....so I have no idea if any of that is accurate.

This happened at Midwest as well, but to my knowledge, no yellow card was issued. Which ruling is correct?

I apologize for the triple post, but its three separate issues.

I am concerned with the field at Buckeye. People have noticed that the rack was easier to move than at other events. I'm not sure what could cause this, since that thing is quite heavy. Not a big deal though. What does concern me was how it was set up. The base plate was not placed correctly, which dictates where the chains are supposed to sit (between the black tape on the edges of the plate). Because the plate was placed 45 degrees from where it should be, the rack, when properly placed based on the chains, was 45 degrees off of normal position. This has no effect for normal gameplay, but for autonomous, it puts the lights at the "corners" instead of parallel with the sides of the field. There were matches when the lights did face the sides, so the chains were not being paid attention to anyway.

The other concern is the fact that the bonus points were measured with a tape measure instead of the stick that FIRST provides and 4" and 12" pieces that I believe the event may provide. In this application, where the tape may be held at an angle or may be viewed at an angle, it is not an accurate way to measure. I have no idea if this affected the outcome of any matches, but it strikes me as odd that it even occurred.

I noticed this aswell, i wasnt sure if it was just me or not. Also, the refs do not spin the rack after every match, this was the case at GLR aswell. it only moved maybe half of the time during the elims.

They are both correct. Some rules allow for yellow cards to be added for repeated and/or egregious breaking of the rule. The specifics of each situation likely made the diffrence in one getting a yellow card.

Courtney I wish someday we can actually have all 3 Xerox teams on the same alliance for once. We've never ever been paired up - not even once. (Not even during the Ruckus...Maybe we should just have a FF match at the Ruckus this year)

Well in my mind we're all in the same family anyways - 1126 and 1450 all had mentors that came from 191 anyways. I helped start both teams so I'm partial even though I am on 191. But then again I have a little tie with most teams in Rochester somehow. That's what I love about Rochester First teams...we're relatively a tight group of teams.

This is a match from the quarter finals at the Buckeye. This is one of the many matches with heavy defense. I have been in the Buckeye the last 5 years and anybody who has been to the Buckeye knows that its one of the defensive regionals. Heres the match that I liked out of all of them. We had a defensive strategy and we had robots on top of us and we took a couple shots to the arm.
