So I see that my team and I are the only team coming from west of the Mississippi. We did that same thing last year and took the spirit award home. So what competition can we expect?

The competiton at Philadelphia is very intense and a lot of good robots compete there. This is the best regional in my opinion. Good luck to your team.

Couldn't agree with you more, Freddy. I LOVE the Philly regional and can't wait for it this year! The 433 Firebirds will, as usual, be in attendance.

Moe our team loves you guys we were both at the championship right next to each other.
Nick:
MOE is looking forward to having you come East to join the Philly crowd this season! Let us know if there is anything we can do to assist your trip to the City of Brotherly Love! The Philly regional is known for awesome team spirit and the venue only amplifies it.
Let's all rock the house!
Also, love the "MOE"hawk!

Philly regional = FIRST for me. I along with the rest of 321 will be there.
I hope that I will be able to make it the the Philly regional this year, it was my first real look at FIRST and that regional holds some of my best memories of FIRST events, it is run great every year and always leaves me with great memories.
I hope to see all my old FIRST friends at Philly this year and hope to make some new ones.
Best of luck to everyone this year.

Although NJ will always hold a special place in my heart (home regional and what not) Philly has quickly become one of my favorite competitions to go to.
A little over two months away, I can't wait!

unfortunately 177 could not get into Philly as our second regional this year :( but i bet we will still have fun in NJ
Team 250 went to Philly last year and had a great time. Unfortuantely, we opted to go to Nationals instead (in my opinon Philly would be better). But last year the whole team made friends with all the teams, including MOE, and almost won the competition. Hopefully we will be back in 2008. Good luck everyone!

I've loved Philly since I started going (2004). It's got a GREAT crowd and a very home-y feeling to it. I'm excited already!

Of course it gets hot in there, we've got birds on fire and plus, I think MOE's shirts magnify light/heat.
George A.
20-01-2007, 23:51
Now if we could only combine the heat from Philly with the frigidness of NJ, we'd have a comfy venue
Do I smell super-regional?
George A.
20-01-2007, 23:53
Super Regional? I don't know...if you combine NJ and Philly the universe might tear a hole in itself...and we wouldn't want that now would we? Mwahaha.
No that only happens if you combine Philly and North Jersey. South Jersey should secede from New Jersey and annex Philly as our capital.:D

8 teams are attending both NJ and Philly: (assuming my unix grep pipes were correct)
< 103
< 341
< 381
< 486
< 708
< 816
< 834
< 1391
So they ceritanly attract many of the same teams. 8 out of the 44 teams at Philly that 18% (I may be doing a little advance scouting while at NJ)
Philly is certianly unique. In the era of the Superregional it has the smallest venue and basically fills up immediatly (first choices). Most teams are veterans (very much so (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45629&highlight=philadelphia)), many of which call this their home regional and attended every year. It has a great Team Social ( it was the best when it was at the Franklin Institue). Theres is alsoThe Lawn. How many other venues can you out the doors in the back of the pit onto a large green and play Ultimate Frisbee with other teams?
Then of course there is the noise and the crowds. Kind of a general admission concert feel. Spirited teams + crowded stands + Music + proximity to pits+ acoustics = Loud Fun. The debcibel level at Philly (MOE stix era) may have prompted the loud noismaker ban. It may have quieted a bit since teams no longer have sticks or drums, but the excitement is still there.
Philly has the good feeling of a small venue, kind of like Old College Ave Gym.
Freddy Schurr

I would agree that Philadelphia is one of the best regionals in FIRST.

Or play hacky sack. For those of us who would rather do that =)
This just in. Dan-o will be visiting the Philly regional on Friday and Saturday to cheer on the green guys. You might get lucky enough to see the lime green suit jacket.
As for the best regional... I'm definitely partial. I don't know many west coast teams, but for the east coast, Philly is a who's who of stand out teams.

Your friendly neighborhood regional manager's assistant will be there, as usual. Even though, I graduated from Drexel last June, and will have to run to class in Center City on Friday morning and afternoon (I'm a PhD student at Thomas Jefferson now, in neuroscience).

Philly = Greatest Regional Ever. (my personal opinion):D
So many great teams are there, 103, 365, 341, 357 are just a few that come to mind.
1712 and I will be there. So please stop by the pit and say hi, I'd love to meet everyone.

422 is going to be there for (as far as I know) our first time. We are all really looking forward to it. And just to warn you guys, we have a history of "meh" and "eek" at VCU  , but we also have a history of being pretty sweet at our second regional
Oh, and we'll be bringing our squad of juggling madmen! Myself and Cuog leading the fun. :D
Hey
Just throwin it out there to all the philly teams but I had an idea...
What do you think about making a collective scouting spreadsheet.
I've started one on google documents and I'm gradually filling in info from team sites and all. Just one big sheet w/ info about all the philly teams...stuff like their scoring ability, how many they can mount, etc. I already have team 204 in on it, Freddy Schurr said he's willing to help out. It's mainly meant to help out the rookie teams and cut down on scouting time done at Drexel. If you guys, and the Firebirds, want ta contribute send me an e-mail address thru CD or I started a thread called "Philadelphia Regional RoboStats" you can post it on there.
So anyways tell me whatcha think and help out.
Tanx
i cant wait until philly! we never really do that great, because it's after NJ, and the NJ finals and whatnot are like a bloodbath!! so our robot is just recovering and seems to have a few recouperation issues...heh. but i think this year, based on performance at the NJ regional, we have a good shot. i was looking at the team list, and it really is a great bunch of teams this year, as usual! i hope to see you all there!!!

Philly is intense indeed team 272 is coming to "rock the house" and if u don't already know...please where shorts its hot in there and be ready for a smaller pit area than ur used to
Danny McC
05-03-2007, 19:33
Yeahhh it does get pretty hot in there. But if you need to get out of the pits all you gotta do is like 50 feet to the doors leading outside. So that is always a plus.

it does get too loud, and too hot
but who really cares
theres too much fun to have in philly to worry about technicalities like 90-100 degree playing fields
Justin M.
06-03-2007, 17:37
I agree that it gets hot, but what do you expect when you cram ~500 people into a rather small gym/arena. It really gets hot in the drivers station, with the lights and stuff.
For the past 2 years our pit has been like 10 feet from the back doors, so we got fresh air blown in constantly.

222 is stoked to return to Philly especially after being finalists in Pittsburgh. The bot is in great shape and come Thursday morning we're going to be revamping our arm to make us an even better ringer, if you need a place to park we've got the real estate, and if you need defense....we might just know a team that could help you out ;) Can't wait to see and compete against everyone!
Ya for Philly!!! :)

Sounds like Philly is going to be super full. I can live with the pit size, but my bigger concern is where are all the people from 8 more teams going to sit. :ahh:
Well, lets hope there is a balcony seating area. It was nice and cozy last year.... that was on Thurs and Fri without most parents or other spectators.

along with the smaller pit sizes, there is also going to be a practice field on the side of the pits. im guessing that had a lot to do with the resizing.
George A.
26-03-2007, 11:39
Although I'm hardly an expert on the matter, If you're coming down Friday or Saturday with a rather large group of people, I suggest coming early, otherwise your chances of sitting together grow exponentially smaller as the time progresses.
I on the other hand, won't have any troubles seeing the field (one of the perks of being the announcer)
See everyone Thursday night!!

We've been at 40-46 total teams for several years (check prior years' team lists)
http://www2.usfirst.org/2006comp/events/PA/rankings.html
http://www2.usfirst.org/2005comp/events/PA/rankings.html
and the pit space always has been 9'x9' at the DAC because of how small the venue is. We just included this in a team email this year because we will have a practice area for the first time ever and every inch is at a premium so we REALLY need all tems to abide by those marks on the floor.
The Lucas

-Lea
Actually, we had 46 teams (http://www2.usfirst.org/2006comp/events/PA/rankings.html) last year, so we have a decrease of 2 teams. Since Philly also fills up (usually on first choice) the decrease in max capacity is probably to make room for the practice field. I'm glad they finally got a practice field, since last year it seemed like everyone's autonomous got worse as the competition went on.

We're taking their team in a new direction next year. We'll have lots of info about it available in our pit, so be sure to come grab a brochure or ask anyone wearing a "Ask me about DYR" button about it.

Team 399 hails all the way from Cali. For travel time, it makes the most sense to go over a day or two early. At least this way they have a) time to recouperate from jet lag b) time to get all their parts reassembled (especially ones that the LA airport wouldn't let them bring) and c) give them a chance to acclimate to the Philadelphia environment. =)

Judging by this post (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showpost.php?p=605601&postcount=172), it looks like 578 will record Philly for archiving. As far as webcasts go, Philly hasn't been webcasted that I can remember. Maybe if we can get 177 Bobcats to come back next year (if it doesn't fill up too fast like this year) they might webcast it.

MOE 365 will be packing up tonight for an early arrival tomorrow morning. Safe travels to everyone!
REMINDER - all teams will receive two Philadelphia Regional Personal Recognition Buttons with their registration packet. Please find the time over the next very hectic three days to recognize someone in a special way. Give him/her a button, quickly document the reason on your handy-dandy form, and drop off the form in the marked box in the Pit Admin area.
THANKS!!!!
Best of luck to all! (...and to all a good night)

Well its 0600 and I am up and getting ready to leave for Philly, I had to get my CD fix before departing. Good luck to everyone attending I can't wait to see all of my old friends again and to make new ones. Any one want to find my I will be at the volunteer desk or walking around showing people around and doing other random stuff. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE.
Great practice day today in Philly. Hope all teams got their bots tuned for some fun tomorrow. Thanks to all the volunteers and staff who made everything run so smoothly today.
Best of luck to everyone tomorrow.
Today was a great day for a lot of teams, We have 3 great rookies with 2/3 of them being able to score on the rack and they both have effective ramps.
There were a lot of teams that could score fast on the bottom and middle racks, the driving today was a little shaky but thats what practice day is for.
All in All it was a great first day for Philly Regional I can't wait for tomorrow and Saturday, good luck teams!

How was the first day of the competition?
Whos looking good out there?
Lots of good teams from what I saw today (the last 2ish hours). Teams 103, 272, 433, 1712, 486 and 365 seem to be the teams to beat out there. I saw some pretty hot matches at the end of the day, especially the one with Dawgma in the last 3-or so (I don't remember which off the top of my hand).
I'm definitely looking forward to seeing teams compete tomorrow.
I'm really surprised a bit this year, teams like MOE and the Royal Assault aren't totally dominating EVERYTHING. Which means the teams are getting better, yay! Not to say those two aren't handing out spankings. I've had a lot of fun playing defense mostly, but I do see that the end ramps are playing a huge part. Good luck to everyone tomorrow, Do well.

We have had some of the craziest days at competitions this year in Philly. Like yesterday we had our carrier plates close to failing so we spent like an hour and a half replacing them with the hardened ones. This was not as easy as it sounds our robot does not make it easy to get to our transmissions. And then today the left side drive system just stopped so we thought it might be the pins falling out since we had heard of that problem it turns out we were right we lost all five carrier pins on the left side drive. We found some new plates thanks to team 708 but they were different gear ratio so we took apart the right side drive and found out we had lost four of the pins on that side and would have lost the last one very soon. this whole time we managed not to miss one match while fixing the robot even winning one when our human player threw a tube on the rack and the other two robots drove up on our ramps we didn't even have to move. But now we have the whole thing back together and it works again hopefully we can get some new plates from banebots that will hold up to stress of competitions. I love this regional it is crazy loud and very competitive. Well we will see everyone tomorrow and hopefully have some more great scoring and competitive matches.
From what I saw today there was a lot of solid teams out there. I was very surprised by the rookie team 2229 they have been doing really well for a rookie team. Teams 341 and 103 are really fast at scoring and driving they are going to be some hard teams to beat. Team 399 is one of the most spirited teams that I have ever seen, must be a west coast thing :), Congratulations to the mentor from 316 for winning the WFA. Wayne Penn did a really great job today on the field, lost his voice a bit but still a great job, Freddy was great as the pit announcer always a good time. The volunteers have been amazing and have kept things running so smooth. I can't wait for tomorrow to see whats next great job so far best of luck to everyone.
Also congraduations to teams 103, 272, 399, 357, 365 and the other teams that won awards today.

Today was a good day, we had some electrical issues mid-day but we're all together now. We were playing pretty good in all of our matches, finishing off the day at 14th place. Lots of good robots out there....can't wait for tomorrow and the semi finals.

Why thank you Kyle for the shout out. I unfortunately will not be returning as Pit Announcer for tomorrow’s matches. However I will be there for my team, 204, mentoring. I must say that I had so much fun Pit Announcing for the past two days and meeting a lot of cool people and teams.
Shouts to
Ducky, Brenda and Momma Troy and Judy for helping with announcements, keeping everything on schedule and also making me laugh throughout the entire two days
All the cool people from CD at Philadelphia. You guys and girls rock. Hope you are feeling better Sara (Bandchick)

From the match results it looks like this regional is a complete tossup. The entire field is full of capable offensive machines. Based on what I saw in NJ, 486 will be a force to be reckoned with in the playoffs. Their ramp design is excellent and will easily get the bonus points needed to secure a win.

Well we had a blast at this competition we won the spirit award and we were on the runner up alliance. We had to back out of the semis because our banebots carrier plates failed on us for a third time this weekend. Now I really think this is a problem that needs to be addressed by FIRST because we have had the soft plates hard plates and even used a different gear ratio plate. No matter we still had a great time thanks to our alliance members teams 539, 834, and 816. We will see you who are going to atalanta in about a week and a half.
Wow, what a great regional! 399 lead the cheering and made the event crazy fun. there were some of the best machines here and they showed it in the past 3 days. 341 84 and 181 were amazing with great and very fast scoring from 341 and 181 and the best defense I have ever seen from anyone provided by Chuck 84. The rookies 2229 and 2253 who both won awards were amazing for rookie teams and I can't wait to see them next year. team 1712 was incredibly fast, I was told that was due to the AndyMark products, and they were just great at scoring. Teams 103 272 and 87 made up the #1 alliance and they were the 3 teams that all through the regional were always fast, high scoring and good at defense they put on a great show. 341 won the EI award and it couldn't have gone to a better team congratulations to them for an amazing robot and team.
Wayne Penn was once again great at getting the crowd excited and dancing and made the event one of the best I have been to.
There are many many more people and teams who made Philly a great regional and I hope that all of you come back, I will be back later to thank the ones I didn't here but I gotta get some rest :)

Yes we did use AndyMark Products, but we used AM one speed gearboxes(similar to 2006 kit gearboxes)!
We'd like to thank our great partners 222 and 484 for helping us put up a fight against 341, 181, and 84. Chuck 84 played some of the strongest defense I have seen in a while, and 181 and 341 just filled that rack. Grats to 341 for winning E.I. and Grats to 365 for the Chairmans.

Well, it's been said a few times that it wasn't our team's first time ever, but whatever. I really liked the regional in Philly more than some others I've been to. It was a bit smaller sure, but it was filled with really great teams and everyone there was awesome (Also, it was nice and cold :D ). Hello again to Melissa Thiessen, it was great meeting you.
One more thing, for the Firebirds: Can you send me any information you have involving the shipping of robots over to Ghana? I know that our team has 3 robots that were built before *any* of our current members were even on the team, and there's one other that may be fixable from '05. We'd have to fix them up a bit to replace salvaged PWM's and such, but we should be able to have them in working condition again in no time. I talked to a couple of you at the event about it, some said it might be an issue being all the way down in Virginia, others said it should be fine. I just want to make sure we can work it out.

I want to say a huge thank you to everyone that put on this awesome event. The volunteers were gracious, the judges and referees were great, and the teams were simply amazing. This was the last event of my student FIRST career, and it was a great way to go out. Thanks to 1647 and 357 for being a powerful and energetic alliance. Congratulations to the champions, especially 181 for their first ever win and for representing Connecticut well. 399, your California spirit was intense, thanks for coming out to share it with us. 365, congrats on the well-deserved Chairman's award, and you and your alliance were a very strong foe in the quarter-finals. Rookies, whether you were a ramp, defense, or whatever, you three teams performed impressively and I'm sure you all have bright futures in FIRST.
Once again thanks to everyone and I hope to return to the Philadelphia regional with whatever team I mentor in college.

It was great meeting you guys as well. It's fantastic to see that the team I helped start is still doing well several years later.
I'd like to thank all of my fellow volunteers, all the wonderful teams, and the fantastic FIRST and Drexel staff members that make this regional work. As Mrs. Vanderpool has been the only reply on behalf of our team thus far, I wanted to take the time to post.
First of all, as many long running FIRST teams have experienced over the years the inability to just make that last step to bring home the gold. After 11 years of dedicated teachers, mentors, and engineers the work has paid off and Chuck finally made that last step of bringing home the gold. Personally, I can not past my undying respect far enough to the hard work of these individuals and the amount of inspiration they have given to me throughout these years. Congratulations to all of team 84, near and far, on a long awaited achievement.
To all of those original teams out there, whom may still be waiting to make that final step. Keep striving - encourage your sponsors that their generosity is what assists in your achievements.
On a personal note, yesterday was amazing beyond many levels. Multiple years of student achievement and alumni were represented by 84. I find no words for those individuals, who were the originals, and this many years later, still come "home" to Chuck.
Team 181, I hope you enjoyed the rest of your evening in the city, and "The City of Brotherly Love" was welcoming to you throughout the rest of your stay. Best wishes to you, and hope you will make it to Nationals.
We are ..... 84!

All I can say from the last 3 days is WOW! This year was simply amazing for Dawgma, as we finished friday seeded first and seeded fourth at the end of qualifying matches. I want to thank the team 222, the tigertrons, and team 484, the vikings, for being our alliance partners. Though we didn't make it out of the quarter-finals, we all still played some really tough matches. Thank you so much!
And thank you to team 272, the Cyber-Crucaders, for their Best Robot award on friday. I'll have to admit I was a little surprised when your team suddenly surrounded our merry little band, but when you started reading off the award, it was simply amazing (I'm the one who accepted the sword by the way). From coming last year with a barely drivable bot to being recognized by others for our stregth was just exhilarating. We had inspectors, volunteers, and judges commenting to many of our members on our overall effectiveness on the field. I want to say thank you to everyone who gave us praise!
Now I have just one question for the members of 1712...
DAWGMA! WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSION?

Yes, the Regional was great, but, then, it being my first FIRST, I'm not qualified to judge. The bots were amazing, with 103 and Daisy being incredibly fast.
Um, Kyle, small point, it's Team 2053 TigerTronics (http://www.uetigers.stier.org/rob/), my group, not "2253", that won the Rookie All Star and Rookie Highest Seed. (Only clarifying so people can look us up if they want.) Your congrats are welcome, and I extend mine to everyone. And wasn't that Chuck84 just *amazing*? And the driver was *smart*, too, particularly that deliberate choice to incur the 30 point penalty to stop opponents from mounting their ramp.
Our driver took on both Daisy and 103 in elimination rounds, and we got an appreciation for how slippery they can be!
I also gotta say I have only admiration for Daisy's designers and pit crew. She lost her claw at one point, and it got remounted pronto.
I just wanted to say how wonderful it was to work with Chuck 84 and the Birds of Prey 181. We worked so well together. We are all relatively low numbered teams that had never won a regional before. That made the victory extra sweet.
To Chuck 84:
We have a long history of offseason victories working with Team 84, going all the way back to 2002. We always worked so well together at PARC, DUEL, Summer Frenzy and Ramp Riot. It was great to finally work together at the big show. Thank you for having the confidence to choose us.
To BOP 181:
We fell in love with your team at Chesapeake 2006 and have been chanting "181, 81, 81" ever since. You have a great machine and you know how to use it.
To our friends Competing in Philly (103, 272, 357, 1712, 433, 365, 316, 563, 222....):
Thank you for all of the support that you have given our team over the years. Everything from offering advice, to providing parts, and helping with Ramp Riot has made us the team we have become. We never forget that.
Hope everyone has a great time in Atlanta and a successful offseason.

All of 341 is incredibly grateful to 84 and 181 for being PERFECT alliance partners. I've never before seen as well rounded an alliance as this one - 181 and 341 put up tubes around the rack while 84 played probably the BEST defense I've ever seen played. At times, Chuck was 1-on-2 against the opponent and they STILL prevented the tubes from going up! Daisy and the Birds of Prey had a blast putting up the ringers while the opponent was bottled up in his/her own home zone.
Great work everyone!
Also, much thanks to our team's own mechanical pit crew. They took the arm from "fallen off" to "fully functional" in about 5 minutes. I definitely didn't think that that was possible.

I have to say that our driver can drive everything and anything. It is his second year driving and his abilities are amazing.

I loved the energy everyone had there though, despite the fact that it was a bit lacking near the end of the 3rd day. The socials between teams off-field were also really fun. I do enjoy dancing with people from other teams (no offense Dawgma).
More importantly, there were some really intense matches, and everyone was getting into it.
That was one of the most fun things I have ever been to, and for that, I would like to thank the 43 other teams for such a great regional competition.

A little late, but a huge thanks to 1712 for making us the third pick and 484 for joining our alliance. We played hard and had a great time! Congrats to 1712 for their success in qualifying rounds.
Biggest congrats to 84, 341, and 181 you guys were a great alliance! 84 you had some some amazing defense on the often forgotten ramp bots. I know first match of th quarter finals you slowed us down enough that we couldn't get home in time to deploy or climb our alliances ramp. 341 and 181 you guys had it together scoring.
Also a congrats to one of the rookies of FIRST. I don't know if anyone watched the progression of 2223, but they got better with every match. Not bad for not having a robot ready to compete when they arrived! This team didn't have any type of manipulator, but they could play some good defense.
Also thank you to all the volunteers for making this happen.
For all you teams that didn't get enough come join us at the 10th annual Pennsylvania Robot Challenge (PARC X). We're looking to make it the best ever and having as many Philly teams as possible would be a really great start! Good luck to all the rest of the season!
