We've ruled out water games over and over again...but how about ice?
This is what happens when you talk to Libby Kamen...
(3:57:39 PM) Me: Look at Dave's away message:
What would you do-o-o-o-o-o for a Klondike Bar???
(3:57:41 PM) Me: ITS A HINT!
(3:57:46 PM) Me: ICE GAME
(3:58:27 PM) Libby: LMAO
(3:58:28 PM) Libby: michelle
(3:58:33 PM) Libby: the 07 season JUST started
(3:58:37 PM) Me: So?
(3:58:37 PM) Libby: he shouldnt be hinting for 09 yet
(3:58:46 PM) Me: WHAT
(3:58:47 PM) Libby: er....uhm......i didn't say 09
and...
(4:01:58 PM) Libby: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/22422
(4:02:02 PM) Libby: what did i say?
(4:02:03 PM) Libby: ice

speechless.
I am just going to be afraid. And leave you alone - from now on.
mhm. Salvage my brain.
Hmmm, practicing would be easy figuring that its been raining ice the last few days here.
We already have enough successful Canadian teams, we don't need to give them any more advantages! ;)
because I totally didn't just say that to you over AIM....

We've got ice in St. Louis now. If the same thing happens in 2009 we could practice in the parking lot. Using batteries for power, of course; these ice storms are usually accompanied by widespread electrical service outage.
Anyway, our regional venue would be well suited to an ice game, because it is a hockey arena. Normally we cover the ice with plastic tiles and then carpet over that for the field. Maybe in '09 we can just remove some tiles instead?
If the volunteers (esp. referees and field resetters) are going to be ready for this, they have to get their skates on soon.

Yep! Same here in NJ.
And maybe that would mean less people would get sick at the regional...those little blocks they use to cover the ice always seem to have everyone feeling under the weather (or that's one of the theories (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45166)). ;)

Hehe, I have, and the Americans got beat up big time. Although this would be a cool game how consistent would it be? I mean after every game would you have that IceTraktor go over the ice to smooth it out? How would they keep the field consistent is my main worry. ALTHOUGH if you used treads properly it wouldn't matter.

And like a minute later I get an IM... (scared me half to death..thank you Dave)
(5:17:11 PM) Dave Lavery: You just HAD to start the "Ice in 2009!!!" thread, didn't you??! :)
(5:17:36 PM) Me: Libbys idea =]
(5:17:46 PM) Dave Lavery: oh yeah, blame her... :)
(5:17:56 PM) Dave Lavery: (actually, let's all just blame Sean)
(5:18:07 PM) Me: That works =]
(5:18:20 PM) Dave Lavery: consider it done.
(5:18:45 PM) Dave Lavery: Now I have to go off and figure out how we are going to get all the 2009 regional competitions to be held in hockey rinks....

CRAP!! what you mean that beautiful white thing we like to call snow. I have been missing it here in Toronto, today was actually our first official snow fall... and I have been missing it (it looks a lot better then yellow dead grass).
For an ice game here in Arizona, we'd have to move our venue to the Coyote's Arena. Does this mean I can assume we'd finally get the Cardinal's Staidum/Coyote's Arena venue combo I've been hoping for, and we can push for a super regional (or even the Championship) in 2009?

I drive for a living and every day we don't have that "CRAP" I am happy.
Using snow would stink. Snow is cold, and wet when melted. I just hate it!
ice dosent have to be frozen water.......they make "fake" ice thats like srally slippery plastic that people skate on. it could be a connection to a water game (water + cold = ice)

IceTraktor? its called an IceTraktor?! gosh my childhood would have been so much more exciting if an "IceTraktor" cleaned the ice after my youth hockey games instead of that lame zamboni.

14-01-2007, 21:08
haha, i just read robotcanuck1676's post. so it's not called an IceTraktor? it should be.
We barely have any ice here in California (At least here in Rohnert Park, where 675 is), so we'd have no way to practice D=
That would surely make an interesting Florida Regional. Would it actually require us not to wear shorts and the warm clothes that none of us Floridians have?
"Ice? What's that?"
With this game each venue would already be equipped with a team social, ice skating party anyone? I could only imagine the poor volunteers though...

WHOA!! Guys, Dean would not do this for one reason...It would completly put the icecapades out of buisness. This reminds me of the farside comic "The icecrusades". I do hope fire is the theme next year, just to hear the batteries pop.

Now my question on the ice game is, would a team be allowed to put spikes in their wheels in order to obtain traction or would that still be barred? lol

Synchronized skating with 'bots...ah fun times ahead...
now fire....can you imagine the FLAMETHROWERS one could have?:D Us safety captains would have a grand ol' time. Although with the fire idea, I can imagine the manual would be twice as long as it is now with all the rules and restrictions.

That would be amazing. It would be really cool if they came up with a game like that only it was a game of hockey. You could have a arm shoot back and forth to shoot a puck and maybe a defensive robot as a goalie:rolleyes: .
Just givin the idea some thought. Maybe the 2011 game will be on MARS! Just Kiddin

i dont know how many times i have heard water or ice or other idiotic ideas like the ones ive seen today. There will never be a water challenge because of the chances of it breaking down in the water. Ice would make it to hard to keep the floor cold enough to have it last a competition. And fire...thats just a joke. PLEASE PPL!!!! THINK!

no need to get angry, this is just a fun-loving thread, btw water based robotics competitions exist, and it would be an extreme leap in fun (as well as difficulty) in the realm of FIRST!

Dang. Since you said there will never be a water challenge, I guess I will just have to scrap all those plans for the 2008 game and start over.
Now where did I put that idea for the jello-based game.....

.
Now where did I put that idea for the jello-based game.....
.
uf. jello. why not pudding ? :D
Dave just gave me an idea (!) since this year's game uses innertubes, and they were used in the "hint" for next year at the end of Kickoff, that must mean that the 2008 game piece is a hint for the 2009 ice game.
Follow my logic here:
2005 = Triple Play. Tetrahedrons aka triangles pointing way up high.
2006 = Aim High. Game pieces were balls that roll.
2007 = Rack & Roll. Innertubes that float.
2008 = H 2 Uh-Oh!. With game pieces involving a puck, or skates, or a Zamboni, or brooms, or something else along those lines.
2009 = Ice Scream (okay, you come up with a better name)....
But certainly not triangle-circle-square. That's just silly.

Do most facilities have the ability to make ice? How about keep it cold enough? Does a convention center have the ability to make ice? Didn't think so.

The Florida Regional would be just fine. Orlando has ice capabilities at the arena in downtown, we would just have to move out of UCF. We would just have to bring in enough skate guards for the pits.......now thats a safety hazard.
What's all the dissing on Israel and Canada about?!

"Yeah, uh, we're looking for ice makers that can run on 12 volts, and we need about 1,500 of them. Can we get those by the twentieth of December?"

Why not curling, Spikan? Much more challenging, getting a rock on a single target.
I think that something like curling would be right in the spirit of FIRST. Challenging, but not impossible.

Sooo... now that we've more or less proven the ice game theory, how do we go about testing our robots on this? If you look at the rules, it's a gel coated polymer, which I've no idea how to simulate or purchase, and even here in Colorado, ice is a bit impractical right now, considering how expensive ice time is, not to mention scarce. Unfortunately we're in the middle of hockey season (my brother is a bantam player on a CC team), so finding ice time outside of 2am is going to be a nightmare, so that's kind of out the window. Surely someone has an idea? Or maybe I'm totally missing the mark?

The bottom line that I've gathered, though, is you're looking at paying ~$28 per 4x8 sheet or so. Pretty expensive stuff. Good luck. :D
