Didn't see another thread like this, correct me if I'm wrong.
"One day, someone showed me a glass of water that was half full. And he said, "Is it half full or half empty?" So I drank the water. No more problem."

Although my formal education endears me to the ancient Greeks (Zeno, Heraclitus, etc.) I'll have to go with a more contemporary source.
"Lose your dreams and you will lose your mind."
15 fantasy bonus points to the person who can name the creator of that line. 5 points if you're over 30.

I just finished reading a book by Gregory Maguire (he wrote the novel the musical "Wicked" is based on) and I'm always happy to find some good philosophical-ish words in his works. Here are some of my favorites from him:
"A glass slipper, once shattered, can't be resoled." Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister
“The eye is always caught by light, but shadows have more to say.” Mirror Mirror
“We are loping sequences of chemical conversions, acting ourselves converted. We are twists of genes acting ourselves twisted; we are wicks of burning neuroses acting ourselves wicked. And nothing to be done about it. And nothing to be done about it. Son of a Witch

"Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum viditur" - ("Whatever is said in Latin sounds profound")
This is a philosophy class examination that was given to students once as I read and one of the questions on the test was:
"Is this a question?"
And it said that one student replied with "If that is a question, then this is an answer" and it also said that the student got a good grade on that particular question.
I find it a pretty good answer, but others don't so tell me what do you guys think.
I believe that there is no wrong or right answers for philosophy questions, it all returns to what one might think or the way they evaluate it.
P.S. I am not sure if that fits here but it has to do with philosophy so yeah.

"S*%t happens, so you just better get used to it." - I have no idea.
I think this is a great motto. People my age need to live by this one more. Teenagers, at least some at my school, like to overreact.

Reminds me of the other story about the final for the grad-level philosophy course. The final was one page, one question, one word:
"WHY?"
While many students turned in reams of paper containing existential arguments, metaphysical musings, and more than a few religious testimonials, only one student in the whole class got an A+ on the final.
Her response was two words.
"Why not?"

I've spent the last couple of days sifting through some of my favorite quotes that I try to live by.
Here's one:
I find hope in the darkest days and focus in the brightest. I do not judge the universe. - Dalai Lama
Here's a second:
Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be. - Abraham Lincoln

Here's one I came up with to be funny, but it *does* actually have real life applications, hehe.
"Sometimes you have to hit someone in the Metaphorical Face with the Shovel of Reality. Unfortunately for them, the Metaphorical Face is slightly behind the normal one, so you have to hit extra hard."

One ring to rule them all. Lord of the Rings
In the part of this universe that we know there is great injustice, the good suffer, the wicked prosper, and one hardly knows which of those is the more annoying.
- Bertrand Russell
" If you Don't live for something then you die for Nothing." -Unknown but it is said by and tattooed on many Fire/EMS, Police and Military people, and soon to be me also.

"Only fools are quoted."
I've been waiting a while to use that one. :p
"An inch of time is an inch of gold"
"A witty saying proves nothing"
Philosophy has basically ripped itself apart in this day and age. It's very funny to see professors in philosophy babble on and contradict themselves when faced with the Socratic method.

These are a few I thought up myself.
"People will never accept your line of thinking unless you destroy theirs. Don't use your own logic first, but use the their own argument against them."
"You have to have an optomistic attitude if you ever want anything good to happen."
"What's the point in arguing about something you can't change or has little to no effect on you? Trust me, you sleep much better at night if you don't think about it."
"Sometimes, it's hard being this awesome."

I was reading up on the history of the Olympic Games, this isn't philosophic or anything but....
The Olympic Creed
Pierre de Coubertin got the idea for this phrase from a speech given by Bishop Ethelbert Talbot at a service for Olympic champions during the 1908 Olympic Games. The Olympic Creed reads:
The Olympic Creed
The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.

"It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something."

"Speak softly and carry a big stick..."-Teddy Roosevelt I don't particularly agree with it, but its clever and really simple.
I also love the quote in my signature....it applies to me almost daily, and to other people, too.
"I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have."
-Benjamin Franklin
I have always loved that quote. Another couple work hard quotes are:
"Chop your own wood, it will warm you twice."-Henry Ford
"“Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime”"
-I always thought this was a quote from Jesus, but I found a ton of different references as authors of this quote. Whoever said it I love its application to FIRST.
Lastly one of my favorites is:
"An open mind is an open door to opportunity."
Either I thought of this one a long time ago or read it somewhere when I was a kid.

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

"“Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime”"
-I always thought this was a quote from Jesus, but I found a ton of different references as authors of this quote. Whoever said it I love its application to FIRST.It's not in the Bible. I believe it's commonly attributed to Confucius or one of the other great Chinese philosophers.
