I woke up today and realized - hey, where's UTC's thread?
In it's 9th year, the UTC Connecticut Regional is getting even better with improved seating, and some surprises we can't talk about just yet ;)
So, who is going to the regional you voted as the Best Regional in the East, and who is excited?
Don't forget to sign up to volunteer at https://my.usfirst.org/vims/ ! We were trying out a new email system that had some issues, so if you sent messages to it and it did not work, please send all volunteer-related conversation to FIRSTCTRvolunteers AT gmail.com

I am very excited for the UTC Regional this year! It falls on the first weekend of my spring break, so I won't need to worry too much about homework. Plus, all kinds of crazy good teams are going to be competing there. I haven't checked entirely, but at least 3 teams that played on Einstein last year are coming to UTC, plus a bunch of other regional winners, and just generally strong-robot teams.
The competition is going to be fierce, and I think we're going to see some of the lowest scores posted nationwide (due to amazing defense and precision spoiler control, of course).

You showed us a great time last year, and the kids voted to return this year.
Probably pitted right next to Rosie again.
We'll see you there!

We'll see if we can't post a few high scores too, due to the construction of some amazing robots :)
I would love to make the trip over to Connecticut again to help out and volunteer like last year, but i do believe i have school that week and i dont think i'd want to take the trip from California alone.. haha.
im sure this regional will be quite awesome though.
I'll be there volunteering and hope to see a lot of you there!

Hello everyone!
I definately can't wait for UTC this year. Last year, new venue, great event! Honestly, I don't know if I have seen an event which matched the excitment and electricity that the Connecticut regional had last year. The loud banging of feet on the bleachers, the music, the excitment...made for quite possibly the best regional that Connecticut has held since the NE Regional moved to Hartford in 1999. 2007 promises to be just as exciting.
To the teams attending, don't forget to bring your bumpers. Things get a little rough out here in New England!
If you aren't competing, I highly encourage you to volunteer for the event. Its people like those of you who volunteer who make the competition work. There are plenty of available jobs to be done, so throw your name into VIMS.
Hope to see you all there!

Yeah...anyway we'll definitly be there and painted again this year and also ooking for some more hackie sack action so if you want to play come find us... always looking to meet some cool new people

Anything fun to do around the venue? We're staying to the Marriott connected to the convention center.

I dont know about directly at the venue, butexcept for a few teams playing ultimate frisbee and hackie sack, but last year was good because it landed on the same day as a parade so we watched that for a while

Remember, this year the Saturday of the event falls on St. Patrick's Day...so there are some surprises in store!!
It is actually really good that the St. Patrick's Day parade in Hartford is the same day. Last year, we were able to convince a bunch of kids from our high school who weren't involved in robotics to come check out the competition since the Convention Center isn't very far from the parade route.
I would encourage everyone to tell their peers to come see what it's like if they're going to be in Hartford already.
Remember, this year the Saturday of the event falls on St. Patrick's Day...so there are some surprises in store!!
So, Jess does that mean I get to get my Irish side of me up.

Convince your local legislators to stop by afterwards, also. Or better yet, convince them that attending the FIRST event is more important than marching in a parade! :)

Well, Buzz is not going to UTC, but I will be home for my spring break as well, so I'm definitely going to UTC. (This will probably be the only regional I get to, as there seems to be no way for me to get from Syracuse to Manchester. Stupid public transportation!) Hopefully I will be volunteering. Sam,
I'm not sure but I rather doubt it. There may be a few test feeds to shake out the system but practice matches are a bit boring for the folks at home...
Another issue is manpower from 230. They will be staffing all day Friday and Saturday as it is...

James
I'll be field-side at UTC, doesn't get much better than that. Especially with the intensity of the new venue. Should be another great regional, I wonder if that science museum is open yet?? I heard rumors of a Team Social there last year. Anyways can't wait for CT use to be one of my least favorite events (booo Meadows!!!!) now it is probably my favorite event (yay CT Convetion Center!!!!!). The UTC regional I think jut proves how much of a difference venue can make to a FIRST competition Meadows was a horrible FIRST venue and the intensity and excitement at the competition suffered as a result. Everything's back on track now should be a good time and great comp.

Mechanically our robot is much better off than last year, so how bad could the task of programming it be? At least we don't throw chains and leave robot carnage as souvenirs on the field...
Anyway, on behalf of all the members of the ÜberBots, I believe I can fairly say that we're all super-excited for the UTC Connecticut Regional this year. Only a few more days!
1740 will be in attendence for sure, we are putting in long hours all week to get ready for the regional, making lists checking them twice etc. Getting ready for a regional is kinda like xmas but more fun and less shopping.? In anycase looking forward to seeing you all there.

It is not critical or urgent, but if any team or one of its members happens to have an RP-SMA antenna for our wireless router that will be running Sundial at the event, we want to make sure the range will cover the whole convention center. It is, well, large :p

So now that half of CT has prematurely cancelled schools, I know 177 is going to have issues getting there and being allowed to use our robot, how about everyone else? I believe our school policy is, you need to come with the school, or with a parent to be allowed to be there as part of a team, which complicates things for a lot of the team.

The qualification day was a ton of fun! Competition is intense. So far they have not posted the results/schedule and the standings on the usfirst.org website.
All the teams have 10 matches, 6 today (Friday, depending on when you read this) and 4 on Saturday.
Speaking of Saturday, the regional has been delayed ONE hour because of the snow and sleet and the driving conditions in the weather. That means the pit opens at 9 AM and opening ceremonies at 10 AM.
Now it's time to go over scouting and then catch some zzzz's.

I would personally like to say thank you to team 176, Aces High, for the gracious perfessionalism that they demonstrated today.
In the middle of the competition, for various school, snow and board of education reasons, our team was forced to stop competing (for the rest of today, atleast). Thanks to an amazing team, we were still able to have our robot out on the field.
Thank you to the three drive team members on team 176 who stepped in to drive two matches with 177's robot. Without ever having driven the robot before, they were able to score a ringer, and play great defense!
Thank you guys so much,

If I remember correctly you scored highly in a couple of matches, which pumped the average up.
Median would've been a more accurate representation I suppose... less resistant to outliers. I'm not crunching those again though :p
Team 1991 would like to thank all of the teams that showed sincere interest in the social that we had planned for tonight. As most of you know, we had to postpone it due to weather:(
However, we are all set up and ready to go for tomorrow (Saturday) night.:)
The details, once again:
FOOD: Pizza, drinks, snacks, dessert
DJ
DDR
XBOX (16 player on 4 projectors)
GAMES
Place: American School for the Deaf (12 minutes away from Convention Center)
Cost: $15 (we won Rookie All Star in NH, and any profits are to help get us there)
Come to our pit for tickets.... we need to know around how many people will come so that we can order food.
Thanks everyone for a couple of great days so far. We are having a blast!

So, I had a hell of a night. I only slept about an hour at a time and visited the porcelain gods four times. I think it was the hotdog I had for lunch yesterday. I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to make it today.
Did anyone else get struck down?

Feel better!

Wow, a #1 seed (176) v #2 (716) qualification showdown and its a rout. 716 and 40 score 2 blue keepers. They extend the row to 6 even though 716 looks like it has radio problems and 40 is constantly defended. Congrats to new #1 seed 716, your dead reckoning autonomous never ceases to amaze me.
Edit: I was watching the webcast and heard that the winner would be number one, I guess it was one of those weird ranking situations.

Since the number of teams at the regional wasn't divisible by 3 you guys had to play an extra round, however they don't count that round because it would be unfair if they did.

Congratulations to 195, 1124, and 558 for their win as well as 176, 25, and 2104 for being finalists! 195 and 1124 are the best offensive duo I've seen yet this year, they seemed so smooth and fast it was beauty in motion. Putting up seven ringers when 25 puts up two is no small feat! And then following that up with, IIRC, five ringers through the awesome defense of the #1 seeded alliance. A very exciting set of finals matches to be sure.
Congratulations to teams 195, 1124, and 558 for battling to the top of the bracket at the 2007 UTC Regional. Also Congratulations to the UTC Regional planning committee on another nearly perfect event. Without a doubt the UTC Regional in the last few years has established itself as one of the premiere regionals in the country. From a great venue, to great teams, to an incredibly enthusiastic crowd this year and loud too!! Congratulations are also in order to team 236 for their fifth (yes fifth!!) Regional Chairman's Award, how they have not won the national yet is utterly beyond me. Congratulations to everyone who competed at and made the regional a success, there was a lot to be proud of.
See you all next year!!!!,

Thank you to our alliance partners 237 & 549, we sure gave our opponents a run for their money!
This is (don't tell anyone) probably my new favorite regional.
The spirt was wild, and Connecticut really seems to get the gist of what FIRST is all about.
Thanks for a wonderful weekend!

I had a great time at the regional. I really enjoyed it, especially as a part of a rookie team. A lot of cool stuff happened, including changing out a BaneBots carrier plate of whom's pins fell out in under 8 minutes!
Kind of a sucky way to end the day though.... After the closing ceremonies, we had a Social back at our build site, and I had to leave to go to the hospital due to some chest pain (I have a history of pneumothoraxs..) Turns out it was just a pulled muscle in my back from picking up the bot.... Glad it was this though (better than a week in the hospital...)
Anyway, the regional was great. Congrats to the winning alliance, and to the rookie all-star winners... We know how hard it is to be a rookie team, and you guys deserve the award for all of the great work.

Shh! Don't tell them that!
Actually, the finals were very intense and my heart was pounding even when I wasn't up there coaching. It was so much more fun to have a difficult match at the end, so thanks to 195 and 558 for your amazing teamwork, and thanks to 176, 25, and 2104 for spicing things up for us. Congrats to everyone on your excellent robots!
If your team/visitors/sponsors/family happened to arrive home this weekend with FIRST safety glasses that they borrowed to visit you in the pits, and you will be attending the Boston event you might want to turn them back in there. A number of them went missing (perhaps because teams left early or in haste on Friday) and were not turned in to the Student Hosts who were collecting them yesterday... They are marked by a yellow line on the nosepiece.
This was the devil dawgs first time competing at UTC. The competition was excellent, and we made some new freinds. The parking fees were marginal, and the food was moderately priced (where else can you get a cheeseburger for six bucks that tasted that good?). I was kinda confused on loading dock senario. I know it's a union shop and they have their own rules on when certain docks can be used, but to wait to the last minute to tell us we can't use the front doors to load/unload our tool carts caused some confusion, that shoulda been on the UTC event website info. See you next year at UTC...

About a third of our team, including our drivers and coach, came down with a similar problem Friday night/Saturday morning... luckily it worked out in the end, but between that and the snow, we were worried for a while.
It's the FIRST Flu as I like to call it. Some years it take form as a stomach upset. Some years as a cold. Some years as the laryngitis virus (last year that was the one that got me - couldn't speak in a normal voice for several weeks! and it wasn't from yelling - I caught it at BAE where I was a spectator - not cheering - and had it through Championships). This year it seems to be the stomach thing that is affecting different regionals.
Wash your hands. Frequently. Get rest and drink lots of fluids. Eat properly. Take care of yourself before the competitions and you will be able to fight things off better.

Will anyone from team 230 be putting up an archive of the webcast?
The folks over at Soap 108 (www.soap108.com (http://www.soap108.com)) have already started uploading matches from CT. It usally takes them about a day to get everything uploaded which isn't surprising considering the enormous task they undertake for all these regionals, encoding, editing, and uploading every match...but I'm sure glad they do it!!

The matches were being uploaded live as they happened, but then stopped after match 20ish. I believe theres a few DVDs floating around with the remaining matches in them. They need to be parsed and uploaded though.

Stills (and anyone else),
As always, things can deviate from the script. I was not happy with the event loading and unloading for the teams but most of this had to do with teams having ignored or not read the information on our event web page.
The info on unloading was posted here (http://www.ctfirst.org/frc_events/site_info.html) ("Access to the Loading Dock"). If you experienced something different please send me an email (mbetts@usfirst.org) detailing your experience. Please be as specific as possible.
I was upstairs supervising the load-in at the loading dock and could not be everywhere at once. We need your input if we are to make corrective action for next year.
I look forward to getting your emails...

All of the elimination matches have been uploaded to The Blue Alliance Match Archive System (http://www.thebluealliance.net/tbatv/matchlist.php?eventid=21). We have some of the first few eliminations up thanks to SOAP, but we haven't had time to split all of the other elimination matches. If anyone wants volunteer to help us, let me know and I can send you the big files to cut up.

Thanks to you as well!!! Yeah it's pretty rough when things start breaking. In Semi#2 We would have had it if we could have gotten the second robot up, thats pretty impressive considering you we dead in the water the entire match. But things happen!!! 20 Put up a good fight in Round Three- When we got nailed and the ramp poped open 20Sec into the 2min Human Op time, they were stuck doing everything them selves.
Good job all around regardless.
Congrats to all the Winners- And lets all root for 236 in Atlanta for the Chairmans. This is there 6th year getting there, and 4 in a row for UTC Regional (2003 they submitted and won in NH) So They definately deserve to be there and need to win soon! Good luck to everyone going forward!

Here's a story about GP at UTC...
Our bot was having major gearbox issues, where we need to change a ratio by means of a larger sprocket on Thurdsay evening so we could compete on Friday.
Upon asking, many teams offered to bring one in for us on Friday morning, which was a wonderful offer. Then came the response from Team 177 (the Bobcats).
Upon understanding our need, a mentor and teacher offered to take us to their school shop about 20 minutes away to help us find a sprocket. Less than a hour later we were up and running and ready for Friday.
This isn't GP, this is GP^2!!! Thanks Bobcats!!!
