FRC. I think there might have been some sort of FVC scrimmage last year; might be confusing with another offseason though.

well, I for one am hoping that Beantown Blitz and Monty are on different weekends so that I can make it down for MM and p for BB. But either way, Monty Madness is a great event, and anyone within atleast 200 miles should try and make it down to see.

11-03-2007, 14:51
Is there going to be an FVC competition as well?

If not and you have the room to have one, our team might be able to pack up and bring down our field. I know another FVC team near us also has a field. Perhaps we could organize something, we're only about 45 minutes from you guys.

On a semi-related note: I was at the competition last year to watch the FVC scrimmage, it's where I made up my mind to start an FVC team. Thanks so much for hosting it!

Update!

There will be a NASA webcast for the event again. More details will be coming soon! For all ya'll who can't make it, be sure to tune in.

Currently we have 7 teams on the waiting list. If spots to open up, rest assured we will let you know! Some teams are even suggesting that we make this event for 42 or maybe even 48 teams. Monty's not that Mad.... yet. Sorry guys.

The Emcees/Announcers for this year's event will be Wayne P. and George (The voice of NJ)! Thanks for volunteering guys, we are looking forward to having you there!

Monty Madness is always looking for more volunteers, so sign up soon if you want to! (sign up @ www.montymadness.org - follow the links)

An added bonus, Monty Madness has a few more tricks up its sleeve. Some tricks that will make people say .... "Where do they come up with this stuff?". I guarantee you, the brains behind this event want to make it one of the most memorable events you have ever been to. And once you find out what we have in store... it will be.

39 days and 9 hours remaining until Monty Madness 2007.... we'll see you soon. In the mean time, good luck to everyone in Atlanta and be sure to stop by our pits and say hi!

Not at all. Nothing would make us more happy than to see both events go off without a hitch. Don't forget about Beantown Blitz for all of you on the waiting list... Boston is a great city and BB is a great event run by an amazing team.

Who are the teams on the waitlist for good ol' Monty Madness??

We probably won't publish the nine team names on the wait list as I'm not sure they would really want us to publicize that. Last week, we updated the wait list process with a link to PARC X registration and will provide a link to the Beantown Blitz tomorrow.

We certainly want everyone to get a last Rack and Roll chance before summer by attending attend these great off-season events.

haha.. already grilling us less than 48 hours after the Championship Event eh?;) Right now, we are still very low on volunteers for the event, so I do believe that it is going to take more time before we can specifically place everyone. As for email confirmation, you should have received one immediately after completing the online application. I guarantee you we are kicking things into high gear as we get closer to the event. Just give us a little bit more time before we can contact you.:)

On that same note, we need a lot more volunteers! We want to make sure that this event is staffed well! Volunteers will be receiving really nice IZOD polo's again this year courtesy of PVH. Be sure to register at :

Hi Jay, I did send out an update email back at the end of March to all those who volunteered by that point. You were amongst the intended recipients. It appears you didn't get that and I'll resend it to you. I'll be sending out another volunteer-wide email in a few days.

In terms of volunteer positions, we'll have a better idea of how that falls out within a week and a half of the event. While we have quite a few volunteers signed up already, we are still in need of many more volunteers to help us make Monty Madness the quality event that everyone expects. (And of course, the volunteers will be getting new volunteer edition Monty Madness polos for their efforts.)

I have been playing around with the idea of doing some pre-scouting for Monty Madness. A lot of teams will be at the event with only a drive team, so any bit of scouting information on the teams would be very helpful to them. I ask for the assistance of all the teams attending or any team that thinks they have accurate info about other teams who will be attending. If you could post the information in the following format, I can compile it and make copies to distribute to every team at the event.

Team Number:
Team Name:
Primary Robot Functions: (Tube hanger, Ramp Bot, Hybrid, Defense Bot, other)
Average # of Tubes placed in a match:

I was talking to some people about possibly changing some rules around to increase rack use/brutal defense. I have some ideas....

-Instead of two spoilers, have one spoiler and one "stealer". A stealer is a black tube with red/blue tape on it in an X pattern, this tube placed as a singleton will count as nothing and act as a spoiler, but if placed with other tubes of the same color, will act as another ringer. Stealers can be de-scored.

-Remove some tubes from the field and placing them behind the alliance station walls. Instead of 9 on the floor, only 7 will be placed, with the additional two placed behind the walls.

-Additional rules to prevent agressive defense, which need to be hammered out.

-No early deployment of ramps.

Again, I'm not speaking for MM, I just thing these are some ideas they might want to impliment...

My prediction: 1626 is a Finalist of Monty Madness ;) :p

Haha, I hope to break this streak as well. But who knows? 1403 is the only Jersey team that has faced us this year. I can't wait to play against the Jersey Powerhouses.

Oh, and by the way, our bot came home today... expect a few changes :ahh:

The planning committee for Monty Madness is working very hard to make this another great event. We actually just got out of another meeting and I found out about some things that will knock your socks off!:) I have to wait just a little bit longer before I can officially announce it, but I guarantee you the things we have in store won't be things you want to miss.

Also, we have a large number of volunteers but we do need more! We are close to the amount that we had last year, but we are still a little short. Remember, if you volunteer you get a VERY nice volunteer IZOD polo shirt (generously donated by PVH). We will not be accepting walk-in volunteers. If you do wish to volunteer, you must do so on the the Monty Madness website (www.montymadness.org) at least 48 hours prior to the event.

Also, if your team has extra Blue Tubes, Red Tubes, Blue Keepers, Red Keepers, or Black Spoilers, we are in need of them!!! FIRST gave away all of the tubes in Atlanta, so we are in desperate need of them! If you have any that you are willing to loan to us, we would very much appreciate it! Please PM me with any information/comments. Thanks!

Are you ready for the Madness?... We'll see you in 16 days.

I have two keepers that I used for decoration, I'll be happy to donate them to a good cause (I just want them back if they aren't totally gone ;) )

I hope this year you guys might think about making opening ceramonies shorter with more play time, I really would like to have lunch this year. :)

I'm not sure, but yesterday FIRST informed us that we wouldn't be receiving any tubes with the field. When I heard this, I had flash backs to Atlanta when people were jumping the barrier to get the free tubes that they were giving out after the final matches on Einstein. We are currently working with PARC to fix the problem because they too are affected by this. Thanks for everyone's help and support!

You gotta buy the tubes aroon...it sucks but FIRST for some reason wants us to buy them. You have until the 15th to place an order for the tubes before they liquidate their inventory.

We are purchasing enough tubes to get through 4 events...beantown, battlecry, river rage and another one i cant remember at the moment.

Trust me when I say they have many new tubes from the championship. The tubes that were given away were ones that were "already inflated" or "popped". There are still brand new ones out there still in the packaging. Just not many - which is why this and other off-season events need extra tubes - b/c FIRST is giving each off-season event an equal amount which may not be enough to cover the events entirely. After reading the last couple of posts I'm kinda surprised that FIRST is not sending any tubes with the field. Ponders what happend to the "special stock". Only those working at Atlanta as Field Repair / Reset know what I'm talking about.

What do you need as far as volunteers are concerned?

FVC3053 will be there for the FVC Demo/Competition (which one it is more like really depends on how many teams show up). We'll be bringing our competition robot, and when we're not competiting/demoing with it, anyone can come on over and take a turn controlling it. Additionally our team has built to two additional Vex robots for people to use all day. Please stop by the FVC area and enjoy!

So when are the volunteers going to get their assignments?

and

An added bonus, Monty Madness has a few more tricks up its sleeve. Some tricks that will make people say .... "Where do they come up with this stuff?". I guarantee you, the brains behind this event want to make it one of the most memorable events you have ever been to. And once you find out what we have in store... it will be.

So what is the BIG secret?

RoboMadi
13-05-2007, 23:16
well, I for one am hoping that Beantown Blitz and Monty are on different weekends so that I can make it down for MM and p for BB. But either way, Monty Madness is a great event, and anyone within atleast 200 miles should try and make it down to see.

haha yea. Looks like me and Sean will be coming form 237 miles away. I think thats really not bad for an off-season event.
And to elaborate on Elgins message; I did sign up for volunteering and would love to help in any way possible. 75? 1403?
These guys have put in soo much effort into this event, and I really wouldn't mind helping these great teams.

Occam's Engineers has a very small secret which now no longer needs to be one:

Today VexLabs introduced new Advanced Gear Kits and Large Omni-Directional Wheel Kits. We got sent the parts a few days early and have built two robots to show off the new parts. Pictures were posted on this forum, they'll be up as soon as they are approved.

The robots were built with the sole intention of having people come over and take a turn driving them around. So please do!

Yeah webcast will be up and running on Saturday sometime, check out the Monty Madness site and here for details. Anywho, the field looks great it's almost done, we just got some electronics to do. The only problem was that we didn't have any ladders to put the rack up, but it got up with some innovation and now it's as good as Einstein. Anyway, I hope to see everyone soon, so drive carefully! There are still some surprises for everyone to see...

Monty Madness was awesome! Thanks to 869, 1403, 2070, and most of all 103, for such a great set of matches. 869, 2070 & 1403, y'all were GREAT alliance partners, and to 103, I have never seen such a great display of GP.

For those of you who don't know, 1923 was called in for the last match of semi-finals to replace 2070, and when we had found that a few of our members had already packed up and left without us, 103 lent us their practice bot to play...in a match AGAINST 103! Cassie from 103 also coached us, and 103's drive team taugh us how to use the controls.

To make the incredibly long story of the incredibly long finals a little bit shorter, We lost in the end to a really great alliance of 2016, 1626, and 1396. It was great playing with y'all, and I hope to get to compete with you guys soon.

Thanks to 1403 & 75 for hosting such an amazing event.

The Definition of what a Chairmen's Award Team was shown to me again today. As Libby said, 869,1403, & 2070 called in their substitution and I jumped for joy, i was going to get to see my kids compete in eliminations :). so i ran to the pits to help prep the robot, to see my pits empty, and I won't lie i got a little discouraged. the thought came to me to ask if we can use 103's spare robot, and 103's response was a whole hearted lets do it, so things set into motion 103's team literally split into 2 one 103 team and another extension of team 1923, especially the coach of 1923, Cassie who had the wonderful chance to be opposite 103 for that one match(been in that situation before, never fun) I was awestruck by the fact that 103 was behind us 100% I mean we are their competitors at this point. When the match score was announced i was floored we actually pulled off a win against 103 and their alliance. At one point i walked over to Mr and Mrs Beck and said "I'm sorry". they responded to me, Don't be.

So for those of you looking to make yourselves a better "Chairmen's Worthy" Team, keep in mind 103 got no benifit from this, and they cannot use this in their chairmens award submission. 103 is What the Chairmen's Award is.

My eternal thanks and gratitude go out to all of team 103 for their continued gracious professionalism, and all around amazing sportsmanship

Monty Madness was by all means THE GREATEST! Our team - TEAM 2070- had so much fun! The matches were so exciting, every team portrayed gp, and everything overall was amazing. Nothing could've made the event any better!!
....WOW...when it came to the finals, everyone went crazy!! haha. The finals was so intense! We had to substitute a team in for us...(Holla 1923- you guys rock!) and they did superb--Thanks Team 1923. The other alliances- team 1403 and 869 were absolutely great and supportive! Their robots were nearly flawless- needless to say...!!
After going in for 3 matches- we ended up with 2 ties..then the 4th match finally ended it with a win for the blue alliance!!!! --CONGRATULATIONS Teams 2016, 1626, and 1396!!! -- robots, strategy, and just the overall game playing was fantastic!!
We are so thrilled with our accomplishments this year as a rookie team!! We would like to thank all of the supportive teams in the NY Regional and participants in Monty Madness! Nothing could've made our season as enjoyable!! Thank You!!

Oh, how I miss it!!

Ah to flashback on the memories :D

Brian from our team already mentioned it, but thanks a lot, all of you. Lots of thanks go to teams 1626 and 2016 for some awesome matches in the playoffs! We had a lot of fun, and I hope that we do get to go against some of you again, though a few of us are graduating in June, but we'll be back! (I was the guy in the denim jacket, running around with a camera, taking pictures of team 1396)

[QUOTE=Libby K;628013]Monty Madness was awesome!

Monty Madness was so much fun! I had a great time! I am glad that we ended up having two chances in the finals! That was great! I really had a great time, not only coaching our freshman team, but as well coaching another great team on how to drive our robot! Oh it was fun! I am glad I had the opportunity to do something I have never done before (and there are few things I havn't done in my FIRST career, trust me)! 1923, thanks for such a great opportunity! I had fun coaching you guys! Let us know if you ever need help with anything!

I'd like to Thank Dave Kazan for coordinating such a fantastic event. As it has since inception, Monty Madness is an event I've looked forward to. It beats out regional events in my book.

I'd also like to thank everyone who stopped by the Vex tournament. It was exciting and I had a lot of fun. Thanks to Occam's Engineers and Driven Robotics for helping run the event - both first rate teams, and a pleasure (as always) to work with.

Monty Madness was yet again one amazing off-season event. From interacting with fellow CD members to seeing other competition robots, I really had a great time and look forward to next year’s event. Thanks go out to Dave and the entire MM crew for running such a great robotics competition in the Garden State.

Also I would like to mention the VIP FIRST alumnus buttons that college students/ FIRST alumni received. I felt that it was an interesting facet to the Monty Madness competition for recognizing these individuals. Hopefully this concept will come back next year.

Congrats to Big Mike for winning the Woodie Flowers Jr Award.

Congrats to all the teams that competed and those who came out victorious.

Yesterday made me proud to say that I’m a FIRSTer.

I want to thank everyone for once again putting on an absolutely amazing post-season event. I'm very glad that I got to be a part of it, even though those final rounds started to get pretty long! We had some great competition this year and I can't wait to see what next year's event brings.

I'd also like to give a big thanks to Pete K for all of his tireless work at Monty. He did an amazing job with the field, and we even managed to get it packed up in a relatively short amount of time before we all dropped dead from exhaustion.

Wow, where to start? Nothing much I can add beyond what has already been said in previous posts. I echo all their praise of the event. From the gift shop to all the side things, lots of cool things to do and see. Some head aches from last year were fixed (people cutting through the back to get to the pits), but other things were still there (CONSTANTLY BEHIND SCHEDULE!). I can't wait for Monty 3.0 (pretty please?) or any other off season event that might take it's place.

I can't wait to see everyone again!

Yeah Fred now that you mention it that was a very good idea to make a VIP button for the Alumnus of FIRST. And I must say there was quite a good amount of us Alumni / Alumna there volunteering. Hopefully as you said before the idea will continue to go on & grow. God Willing I hope to see everyone next year at Monty or sooner at one of the local regionals.

I had fun, but this competition gave me Erie reminders of our luck at the Cheasepeake regional. A rookie team as our 3rd pick with little driving experience having trouble getting up our ramps. But we were able to get a little further this time. Our bot went through all 17 matchs we were in without a problem, and only 1 minor repair to the tap in the middle. Congratz to the alliance that won and best of luck next year. I'll try to find some pictures lyiing around, if i can.

I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank all of the volunteers that made Monty Madness happen.

We had current members from various FIRST teams along with their mentors and parents, all helping us throughout the day. And of course (as Freddy noted before), we had our invaluable VIPs, those FIRST alumni from teams far and near volunteering their time for the next generation of high school students.

Special thanks to our partners on Team 75, to our public voices of the Madness: Wayne Penn, George Ackley, and Big Mike, to our FTA and key support staff: Pete Kieselbach, Sarah Nied, and Michael Dessingue, to our head refs: Mike Nasson and Karin Kloberg, and to our audio-visual guru, Jeff Brooks and lighting maven, Bob Kazan. Also, let me express our collective gratitude to our speakers at the event, Dr. Bart Kamen and Sheri McCoy of J&J and of the FIRST board of directors.

I hope that I am right in my evaluation that everyone had a good time at the event. I know that I saw lots of smiles and that is what it is all about. :)

Does anyone have video of Monty Madness?

All of Monty Madness was recorded. I'll see what I can do to get some video up and running when I get back to town.
