If Eagle Robotics team 399 were to hold a "prom" at our hotel in nationals, would anyone be ineterested in attending? Please let me know as soon as possible so that we can start arranging.

Sounds like a fun event.

You may encounter problems of students not being able to leave their team's hotel or having to be back at the hotel at a certain time due to county rules and such.

If possible we need to get your team to go to make this work for everyone. So if you can bring this idea up at your next meeting or at least to your advisors, that would be great!

If you do it next year (2008) I'll attend, but just for the sake of going to a 10 year anniversary party of my original senior prom.

Good god I'm getting old. :(

I personally would love to do something social like that, but obviously it's the team's [read: mentors'] decision in the long run

youngWilliam14
12-03-2007, 22:15
someone on my team and someone on our partner team would like to go together (you know who you are). what hotel?

Ninjitsu Banana
12-03-2007, 22:30
Interesting idea...if it were allowed, I would go just for the fun of hanging out with other FRC people.

Brad Voracek
12-03-2007, 22:36
Obviously we are doing this because the weekend of Atlanta is our prom at the HS this year. And then why limit it to ourselves. We still don't know the hotel, but we want to do this. We just won our way in to Atlanta so we should have a hotel in the next couple weeks, we'll keep everyone updated.

Nawaid Ladak
12-03-2007, 23:01
im up for it. why doesn't FIRST just do a prom style social instead of putting together something at Olympic Park when it's freezing cold (referring to 2005).

i like this prom idea, since im a mentor, i'll be there, IF i attend (some of us remember what happened last year, so im not guaranteeing anything this year)

Twirler
12-03-2007, 23:07
That would be rather exciting I must say. If we make it this year, I'll bring it up to my team ^^

rachal
13-03-2007, 01:48
Provided my team goes to Atlanta, I'd definitely go, if (a) we can dress informally, i.e. team shirts, and (b) bring our robots as dates :D

Although that makes it more of a normal team social than a prom...

Pavan Dave
13-03-2007, 09:43
Sounds fun. You have three days to meet people and than a night to just relax and have fun with the peoples you meet. I think it would be pretty cool if we could do it formally, but I'm the guy who wears a tie for the heck of it with a nice shirt. Unfortunately we have a strict school district so we'll have to see what they say about this...*sigh*...

Pavan.

I believe I have read a thread similar to this last year maybe, you should search for that thread to see what people suggested to maybe give you a better idea of why that team decided to not go on with it and such. i think it would help.

But if there were to be a "Prom" at Nats, i would go ;]

It looks like the prom will be held at the hyatt hotel. It looks like most of the teams are staying there. Nothing in confirmed, but it looks like a good chance that its gonna happen. The only things is that there might be a small fee to get in, just so that we can cover the cost. Hope to see all of you there!

Rachika Garcia
21-03-2007, 22:43
it pretty much is whatever you want it to be...the only reason that were calling it prom is because our high school prom is that weekend. and were obviously not going to be able to attend...there will be music....and drinks i believe..

This is too bad. Most of our team is arriving on Thursday night (5 PMish) At 9PM, we are having a viewing party for my appearance on the CW (check out my ~sig~) Oh well. Perhaps next year you can plan for this Friday or Saturday night, because we would love to attend.

22-03-2007, 22:29
So we are planning on having an robo prom in Atlanta. But in order to do so we need to have enough people interested, as in teams in part or in whole. We are planning on having it in a convention room at the Hyatt on thursday night. Is there any interest to do so? there will be a small (under 10 USD) fee at the door just so that we can cover costs i.e. dj, room, etc.. Please let me know ASAP if you are interested.

There seems to be a lot of interest in this. I know a lot of people on our team (mostly girls though-- and I'm not sure you'd want to see the guys on our team dance...)

One of the best songs in the world for getting a bunch of people to dance is SHOUT by the Isley Brothers -
You know you make me wanna shout!
Kick my heels up and shout!
Throw my hands up and shout!
Throw my head back and shout!
Come on now shout!

Robyn Needel
24-03-2007, 12:31
Our mentors are in conversation about this. As long as the hotel is ok with it, considering how many people seem to want to come, you will need to come up with a time, food, drinks, a method for collecting money, and so on. Good luck on your planning, it would be a fun event.

Rachika Garcia
24-03-2007, 12:51
Basically, we have a 100 person occupantcy room from the hotel. Im not sure how to do this, but anyone who has said that there were comming for sure on chiefdelphi, i will keep that amount of space for your team. Please just let me know how many plans on attending.

Julia: "You see this look on my face? It's the look of shock."
Me: "Yeah, we tend to have that affect on people."
Jess Boucher: ::sigh::

An hour later after hanging out at the Museum of Science, and then having to pull a smooth move on the T to actually be able to ride the darn thing cause us people from CT and other places couldn't figure out how to use the T (subway).

Julia: "You see my face? The look of shock is still there?"
Me: "That's just cause you're not used to us and our crazy ways yet.. That comes with time... maybe.. kinda.. sorta.." lol

So.. Julia.. professional opinion.. Should I be in this contest or out? lol :p

Basically, we have a 100 person occupantcy room from the hotel. Im not sure how to do this, but anyone who has said that there were comming for sure on chiefdelphi, i will keep that amount of space for your team. Please just let me know how many plans on attending.
Thanks

that is a small room. a couple of teams can fill that up. so are you going to do somekind of reservations. maybe i email you how many and you email me a confirmation letter. just thought you might need something like this since it sounds like you got a party on your hands.

So.. Julia.. professional opinion.. Should I be in this contest or out? lol :p

NO IT DIDN'T! My face is now permanently frozen that way.
And Elgin, I think you might have what it takes to win this competition. That is.. . if you're determined enough. So do you THINK you can?

Based on how this thread is going, there's going to be over 100 TEAMS that will want to go to the prom. This sounds more like an impromtu Team Social. FreedomForce's post (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showpost.php?p=596366&postcount=23) earlier in this thread that maybe FIRST ought to consider this instead of the Centennial Park party.

Is doing both out of the question??
Is there a large room available in the WCC for Thursday night?

George A.
28-03-2007, 03:34
I'm going to have to second that...with approx 100 TEAMS showing interest lets say that if each team brought only 10 kids (a rough estimate) that would require a space big enough to hold 1,000 people minimum...I don't think a hotel hall could hold it. So maybe somewhere else?

I mean I REALLY want to go, and I don't want to sound like a downer, but time is running out and people are growing more in number.

If it's a nice night, you could always try doing it outside, or having an impromptu meetup somewhere like the underground or Centennial Park. After all, there's usually the Atlanta Prom around the same weekend (though we've been informed not this year), and the fountain makes for a gorgeous background for pictures.

There's always some way to work it out, but please try and finalize your plans as quickly as possible so those of us WITH teams can make our travel arrangements to your party!

I think the list should be made after the last regional is over because there are teams out there that probably want to go, but have not qualified yet to go to Atlanta.

I recommend leaving a few ad hoc spaces, but having a pretty finalized sheet. The sooner the better, as we all know, schools have a tendency to give out LOTS of red tape for unofficial events like this. So the sooner the list, the sooner the teams can work out the details. I suggest setting aside maybe 30+ spots for teams that haven't qualified yet, but you should have a least a large consensus by now about everyone else. =)

Wild idea here:

How about doing this on the floor of the Georgia Dome after the pits close Thursday night? Maybe not on the playing fields, but perhaps in the space in front of them?

Music can be played for varied preferences (on each field), so mentors/volunteers as well as students get to party!

This might be a logistics issue for FIRST and the venue, but maybe it can work...

PS: are robot costumes allowed? i like looking like a robot in front of the ladies

I believe FIRST used to have dancing at team socials, and some problems came up. I wouldn't think they'd allow this.

The location of the proposed prom as detailed in the recent comments has gone south, literally.

The initiator of this thread, Rachika Garcia said on March 21 "It looks like the prom will be held at the hyatt hotel".
The exact Hyatt was never clarified.

Then on March 27th, shakil07 said:
"is it going to be at Hyatt Place 1899 Sullivan Rd, College Park, GA or different Hyatt?"
That College Park hotel is about 10 miles south of downtown Atlanta.
shakil07 Hyatt question has not been responded to so of course some people are uncertain.

I can only assume (I have nothing to do with the proposed prom), that the Hyatt hotel that Rachika was talking about was the Hyatt Regency Atlanta which is very close (walking distance) to the First venues and other downtown hotels. Many First teams are staying there including ours. See this (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showpost.php?p=602231) message for info on the Hyatt Regency Atlanta.

I assume that Rachika will clear this up soon but I believe my info is correct.

I haven't yet seen an indication that an "official team gathering" has been or is being organized by FIRST for Thursday night.

This thread started with a harmless request by a team planning their prom in Atlanta (in a room for maybe 100 people). In this thread, it's apparently snowballed to an event on the scale of a team social. There's confusion about which hotel and team's trying to get detailed information to tell sponsors, mentor, parents, ...

I would make some "back-up" plans for your team in case something "official" doesn't materialize for Thursday.

Dress to impress? Is it possible to have some guidelines? I don't want to look under/over dressed.

On another note; are people serious about dates? haha, Because if this IS a "Date" event, solo is fine right? lol

jill399
08-04-2007, 21:34
well, dress to impress is basically semi-formal attire. if what i understand is correct. personally, im wearing a casual type dress. and my dates wearing a button up shirt and tie.

dates are cool, but so is going solo. it's pretty much like a less formal and a lot more fun type of prom. :D

"Dress to impress," typically, means no denim (sorry, Dean), sweatshirts, t-shirts, hats, or sneakers. What it means for girls is harder to define since it's used most often when describing the dress code at clubs and what most girls wear to clubs probably isn't appropriate. :)

Use common sense -- don't look like a slob, but it's not a white tie affair, either, and it's not even as formal as semi-formal.
