We were having an argument on my team, and I believe that I have the title nerd. Please vote as to whether or not you think I am a nerd. Please ask questions to better your decision. I attached a picture to help in your choosing.

Thanks for helping me settle this dispute.

Considering that pic and the fact that you started a thread about pi day, yes I would refer to you as a nerd. By the way you beat me to the pi day thread.:D

So does that make me a nerd?

Hmm...Dictionary.com says:
nerd –noun Slang.
1. a stupid, irritating, ineffectual, or unattractive person.
2. an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit: a computer nerd.

I'll let you decide for yourself because any response I give might get me in hot water...:yikes:

Thank you all. I am relieved to know that I am still a nerd, regardless of what my teamates say. They all claim that you 'don't know me that well', but you all know me better than they do, 223 posts later.

Again, thanks,
Jacob

jacob is not a nerd. i've known him for a few months, and yes he has his moments. but i wouldnt exactly call him a nerd. nope nope. even though the whole pi day thread got posted at exactly 3:14 doesnt mean that he's a nerd, but mearly a person who has a love for numbers. i've spent a minimum of 3 days a week with him for the past 3 months, and i can honestly say that jake is not a nerd.

It was actually 1:59 and 26 seconds. Yes I did do it at 26 seconds, even though it doesn't show. And she has no idea what she is talking about.

techinically since pi is 3.14159265...should it round to 3/14 at 1:59 and 27 seconds? what do you think?

Well, I had the post all laid out before hand, and hit the Submit button when my watch said 53/100ths of a second. Now my watch isn't atomically synced, but it's the thought that counts.

The fact that people are asking questions like this makes me wonder what percentage of people on CD would be classified as 'nerds'...

I might be a nerd, but I am definitely a pi freak!

If we want FIRST to go main stream and have the support of the same community that goes to football games and such, it is counter productive to say we are nerds. It doesn't really matter what you think nerd means, and it may be a compliment to you. However, to the rest of society, it carries a negative connotation.

Two cents.

Breakers tripping? The clicking of a limit switch? ...

Btw: I didn't vote.

Lol. Who actually voted no?

I find this amusing.

I don't know. Only you can answer these questions.

Do you posess the quality of a N.E.R.D.? (http://www.nerdsfirst.com/)

If so, be on the lookout for fellow nerds @ UTC.

I prefer the term 'geek'

There is a difference between a geek and a nerd. It is offensive to some to use the two interchangeably. ;)

Just for clarification, the general sense is that:

Nerd - A person with above average intelligence but severely lacking in social skills.

Geek - A person with average intelligence or above and relatively normal social skills but an unusually focused interest in technology, mathematics, science, or otherwise overlooked interests in the general society.

:)

That means all you pi day guys are geeks. :p

It is given that I am a geek... The question was whether I was a nerd... According to some on my team, I have social skills, only classifying me as a geek....

It's unfortunate that pi day is almost over.

You also chose the role of programmer in your profile. I've been and/or mentored FIRST programmer(s) for 7 years. They have a much higher nerd percentages than other roles.:] I could provide some good examples, but I won't.

JBotAlan

Well, I prefer "nerd"...I am somewhat lacking in social skills and I would like to think I have above average intelligence...

The people around me all accept me for who I am--a nerd. I call myself that; I'm proud of that! I don't see any negative connotation there...

PS. all of us programmers are considered hackers--that's a negative connotation for you!
