Just to get some ideas. What are other teams doing in Atlanta to have extra fun besides the comp and social event?
Honestly there's very little time for anything else, but the World of Coca Cola and Underground Atlanta are nearby, those would be the closest short term attractions.

World of Coke will be closed during Championship's due to a move to a new building next to the Georgia Aquarium which is next to Centennial Olympic Park. The aquarium as you may know is the worlds largest and is a great place to visit if you have time. The park is where the wrap party is held on Saturday night.

There could also be NHL playoff hockey at Philips arena right next to the GA Dome during Championship's. The Atlanta Thrashers will be in the playoffs but the schedule has yet to be determined. Dave
There also might be a braves game going on at home.

Maybe Thrashers game on Wednesday, Thursday or Saturday nights then. Dave

http://www.centennialpark.com/events/fountain.html
Special Events other than just a water fountain is included with that.
The Fountain of Rings is the centerpiece of Centennial Olympic Park and is one of the most recognized and photographed landmarks in Georgia. Millions of international and local guests visit the Park every year to enjoy the world's largest interactive fountain featuring the Olympic Ring symbol. Its photographic image also greets millions of visitors at the Atlanta Airport and delights a new generation as the States representative on the latest Here & Now Monopoly game board.
Its free to view the Fountain of Rings show, which plays four times a day, 365 days a year, at 12:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Come and see the water come alive to these songs (songs vary per show):
1812 Overture Tchaikovsky
Summon the Heroes John Williams
Chariots of Fire Electronix
William Tell Overture Gioacchino Rossini
Under the Sea Samuel E. Wright
Twist and Shout The Beatles
Sir Duke Stevie Wonder
Dancing in the Street Martha Reeves and the Vandellas
I want to catch at least one show with some cool music when it happens.
One show should be going on during the wrap party at 9pm Saturday Night... (or right about the time it ends)
There is also Stone Mountain that is close by but requires a bus or car to drive you to, great hike up and amazing view once you are at the top.
The Underground is really cool lots of shopping and stuff to waste money on.
There is also the ever great time of frisby, hackysac football, soccer etc etc with other teams.
Oh if you get on the Marta, and take it to one of the last stops, (past Four Points? i think) There's a mall that our team usually goes to a lot. Stores are pretty decent.
Plus i also like going to the park random times of the day to join other teams in their Flag football and Frisbee games.
The pizza place in the food court in Underground Atlanta has really good garlic bread too! :D
One of the places in the food court of the underground made me sick last year. Just my luck. So, eat there with caution.
A couple of years ago we had an extra day due to a scheduling glich so we went to Six Flags Over Georgia. Unfortunately we brought our weather with us and it was freezing at the park all day.

Oh if you get on the Marta, and take it to one of the last stops, (past Four Points? i think) There's a mall that our team usually goes to a lot. Perhaps you are talking about Five Points which is the central station downtown where all rail lines cross? I am not sure about the stores there though.
Some other suggestions from a local person:
There is also Little Five Points at Marta (http://www.itsmarta.com/getthere/schedules/index-rail.htm) stop E3 where some trendy smaller stores are located.
For shopping, I would suggest Lenox Square (http://www.simon.com/mall/default.aspx?ID=207) or Phipps Plaza which are north on the Marta orange Northeast/South line to stop NE7. Some of the better / upscale stores in the area.
Everybody should eat at least once at the worlds largest drive in, The Varsity (http://thevarsity.com/locations.php?action=view&store_id=1). It is at Marta stop N3 North Avenue which is also right next to Georgia Tech University (http://www.gatech.edu/) in downtown Atlanta.
Marta rail stop N2, Civic Center - See the RMS Titanic (http://www.titanictix.com/) artifacts.
Marta rail stop E2, The MLK Center (http://www.thekingcenter.org/).

Hmm you may wish to stop there but consider not eating - many a team member has fallen ill to their food in the past. But you can at least ask them for some of their paper hats (Steak and Shake style).
If you are planning on going to the Aquarium, especially on Wed., you may need to reserve your tickets now. MOE 365 (most of the team that is) reserved tickets several weeks ago and slots were going fast. The tickets are twenty some dollars - don't remember the exact price - and you are given a specific time to start.

Hmm you may wish to stop there but consider not eating - many a team member has fallen ill to their food in the past.Travis, Man there must have been some extreme circumstances and more to your story if this is what you are reporting. Myself and many Atlantan's have been eating there since 1928 with only good memories. The food is greasy but delicious and I am not aware of any media reports concerning what you have mentioned. Can you advise a date when this happened to your team?
This place is a regular hangout prior to all Georgia Tech home football or basketball games and many other downtown events. It is an Atlanta classic. As you can tell I am very defensive about The Varsity, again not saying that your team members may not have gotten sick. I respectfully submit that there is much more to their illness than you making a blanket statement that is was from eating at The Varsity.

Perhaps it is something specific to our team, but every year we've gone there, especially the first, at least 2 team members end up feeling very blah after eating there. This isn't a case of food poisoning or unhealthy cooking practices - I think the (very) greasy food just doesn't agree too much with them, and they don't feel so hot for at least a few hours following their meal. Since we always have a full team meal together somewhere else earlier in the week, some of the adult mentors on the team often bypass the joint and go somewhere a little more "refined" on "Varsity day" - often, we'll hit up Ted's Montana Grill (http://www.tedsmontanagrill.com/locations_001.html) for some bison burgers and tasty milkshakes. Keep in mind, Ted's is a relatively small place and may not be equipped to handle larger groups.

Don't you guys agree that FRIST itself is spiced enough for ATL?
I mean I know there is a lot to do in ATL, but FIRST is the main attraction over that specifc weekend in ATL.......
Every year I end up going around ATL during "working hours" and miss out on a lot of Fun inside the Dome. So this year I'm planning to stick around (as much as possible) and have fun with some cool FIRST people...
And obviously after hours, I'll be running in between hotels, simply having fun.

Anyone know how the venue The Tabernacle is for concerts? On Thursday night a few of us may look into going to the Jagermeister Music Tour there. Just wondering how seating was there or if was standing room only?
http://www.jagermeistermusictour.com/core/tour_detail.cfm?detail=378
Stone Sour, Lacuna Coil, Shadows Fall and the local opener Crazy Anglos. Looks to be a good show.
Just need some details about the venue now.
As far as food places go, Jocks & Jill's was pretty cool last year in the CNN Center.
I was thinking about going to the Zoo.
I know there is a bus loop between the Zoo and the Aquarium, but does anyone know if the Zoo is any good? I was assuming it was since they have Pandas there.

The zoo (http://www.zooatlanta.com/home.htm) is much improved since they got the pandas. There is even a panda cub (Mei Lan) now on display.
Check out the panda cam on the website.
From the zoo website concerning Panda Viewing Tickets
"Ticket holders will be assigned 15-minute time slots. At this time, tickets are only available during morning hours, with the last tour taking place at 2:45 p.m. As Mei Lan matures, both ticket availability and viewing hours will be extended."

Every visitor to Atlanta should experience the Varsity! I have been known to plan a day's drive around lunch at the Varsity. Two chili dogs, a peach pie, and a large PC -- that has been my standard order since 1970, when it came in at under a dollar.
And, Dave, when I was a student at a great engineering school located just across the connector from the Varsity, that school was known as The Georgia Institute of Technology (http://www.gatech.edu/). It still has that name today -- there is no such place as "Georgia Tech University".

Oh man!! I'm joining your team for a couple hours for the Medieval Times trip. lol j/k
But seriously, if you have never been to a Medieval Times restaurant/show it's an experience you won't soon forget.
Eating with your bare hands, live horses & a joust between about 4 Knights (one of which who's color-coded section you will in when you go eat) and then a lucky female audience member from the winning Knights section gets to be the princess and ride off with the Knight. lol
My sister got chosen for that since our Knight won, and she was picked from the audience. She felt all special getting to be the princess. lol
Good times.
Where is it anyways? Pretty close to the GA Dome area, or a bit away from the center of the activities? I don't recall seeing any mention of it anywhere as of yet, but then again haven't been actively seeking it out.

Give yourself three hours or so and you ought to be okay -- maybe a bit longer if you want to read every placard. As I recall, we spent about that much time inside and were able to eat there as well. I certainly took the longest of the group to see everything and I was satisfied after about 2.5 hours.

As of right now any date appears to be open but typically the weekends are of course more crowded. It is POSSIBLE that you might not get in if you try to just go down there and enter without a reservation but just can't be sure. Be advised also that they are open until 5PM Mon-Thurs and 6PM Fri-Sun. It is really quite an enjoyable place if you enjoy the sea life.

DaveOK, the hockey playoff games schedule are now set by the NHL. Atlanta is playing the NY Rangers beginning Thursday at 7PM at Philips Arena. For those that are not aware, Philips is very close to the GA Dome and next to CNN Center. There are still good tickets for game #1 on Thursday available through Ticketmaster. (http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/0E003E65AA0F58C3?artistid=805899&majorcatid=10004&minorcatid=9)
I just (1:40AM Monday) found 6 tickets together on the upstairs side for $46.50 each including fees. These are the least expensive tickets available. There are some tickets still available downstairs but they are over $125.
Game #2 is not at a good time for First folks for several reasons. The game is at 3PM on Saturday which means the crowd will be leaving Philips between 5:30-6:00PM about the same time we all go to Centennial Olympic Park for the Wrap party!
Also, remember there is semi-pro ;) basketball (Atlanta Hawks) on Friday night at Philips and Braves (http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/schedule/index.jsp?c_id=atl) games Wed, Thurs, Fri & Sat nights and Sunday afternoon.

Hi, Team 1535 came all the way from Canada (21 hour bus ride) and we went to the Aquarium and Atlanta UnderGround, they were both awesome places to see. I recommend going to the Aquarium BUT eating somewhere else as it is a bit pricy there. Other than that, there was plenty of fish to see.
FYI* Dont bring chewing gum, knives, lighters, etc. to the aquarium as they will get confiscated.... we lost alot of chewing gum to the security gaurds out front :S
