If you're in Ontario you might want to watch Global news at 6pm and maybe 11pm as well tonight, we have a cameraguy and field producer at the Greater Toronto Regionals now this afternoon and if all goes well there should be a full reporter story at 6pm.
I unfortunatly was not the camera sent to the GTR today, I'm on other stuff so I didn't get to play but the crew there is an excellent crew so it should be a half-decent report.

NIIIIIIICE FIND! Storm, thanks for always keeping us posted on the media opportunities in and around the Toronto area. A lot of us out here REALLY appreciate it!
BTW, any commentary on the Discovery coverage? I was really stoked to see it, but I was out and aobut all day today, and never had a chance. I wonder if anything is archived?

I am not sure about the discovery channel coverage as I've been on the road all day but I can only guess they did a good job at it like they usually do.....
Who knows, maybe global will go back tomorrow and maybe I'll get to go :)
I may have posted this message in the wrong thread as there is a GTR thread but I'm actually on a blackberry and had trouble navigating.
Anyways, hopefully all goes well tomorrow and who knows maybe global will cover it again and follow it up, see who the winners are and all that.......

Well it made it on Global at 6pm on Friday, ran long too :).
Not sure if it made the 11pm but I know it made the 6 as I heard the audio track in my earpiece as I was hooked up to a live truck as we were on the air.
FIRST also made ctv/cfto news (our competition), I know that because today I was at an incident and the ctv camerauy did not have a tripod, he then mentioned something about leaving it at the Hershy centre at the robotics.......so they were there.
As for a copy of the story that went to air? I don't think our stuff is linked to anything online but let me see tonight if I can sneak in there and make a copy to DVD of that newscast........I'm not sure I will be able to as we are not allowed but I do need special training on how to correctly operate DVD players and remember to finalize discs and I'll use that as an excuse :)
Someone on here knows first hand that I need more practice burning DVD's correctly :)

I went into the station last night and burned a DVD of the story that aired Friday morning so if anyone wants to see it or a copy I do have it.

Sure! If you want to feel free. Yea I thought they did a good job putting it together, one thing in news that we always worry about is how a story is put together, you can have good video and clips but sometimes the stuff doesn't get used but this time they did a decent job of it.
Feel free to post it, host it and use it as you want......

Yea I was happy too the way the reporter and editorial assistant put it together and told the story........sometimes they just show some pictures and make it look like a fun event but don't really tell the story about what it is.......Minna explained it well, and I believe they put that together in 45 min or something......I know the crew got stuck in traffic heading back to the station.

well....a couple of other people have posted compliments about the story so I assume it played for them or they were just being VERY nice :) It played for me in media player, it is a .avi file, what are you trying to open it with?
I will re-upload it at a .dv file and make a link and post it and maybe if you have quicktime it will play for you....or if there are any other ideas let me know....could be something to do with the codec and I'm not too sure beyond that point....let me rename the file to .dv and make a new link and I'll repost it here as soon as that file is on the yousendit server.

Here is the link to the same video in .dv format, see if it works:

ROBOTIC GOLF CART (.AVI)

See if these play.....hopefully someone on here might know why it won't play for you, it played in windows media player 10 for me, I am using XP-pro SP2 with all the latest updates. Let us know if it works or if there is anything else I can do to the file to make it work.

Thanks, I'm gonna try them after I press the submit reply button on this. Before I just got the first image and it didn't keep on playing. Here we goo...
The .dv one worked! They just had to pause and show the sign on my back didn't they :D

Interesting.....I also shoot video for the weather network and when I FTP stuff to them I have to change the filename to .dv as well, that's sort of why I thought of it.
And yes we as cameraguys always look for something interesting so yea...if you've got a sign taped to you're back we will probably notice :)
"ask me if the robot is turned on", that funny....I was at a press conference/community event last weekend and as start time rolled around the sound system would not work, they tried everything, changed mic cables, checked speakers, and then gave up and told us all that they will just have to speak loud and hope for the best, I then left my camera position and deployed the best engineering skills I had to help them out.....I walked up to to the organizer and asked if I could help, she says "sure! please! do you know anyting about electronics?", oh yes I replied and I reached down and turned the POWER SWITCH ON to the amplifier under the mixer board and the sound system came to life. They were amazed.:)

Haha :D I'm working on Ubuntu (Linux) right now and that's what I tried the .dv on. The .avi I tried on a windows machine.
The story behind the sign is that the first match, right after Dave (from IFI) told us to make sure we turn our robots on, we put the robot on the field...and I didn't turn the robot on! :D It was a very exciting and action-filled match for us. Thank you Jenn for the sign, it's hanging on my wall now along with other robotics memorabilia

I got the .avi to play in quicktime which is usually pretty fussy.
Here you go everyone. I hosted it on my site.

Yes, fussy is one way of describing quicktime :) I haven't had much luck getting anything to work with it, but one of the stations I shoot for can't open my .avi files but has no problem with .dv so I have to rename everything for them when I'll sending them stuff.
I'm not too worried, I plan on replacing my old laptop hopefully come this september and then I'll have to make all those tough decisions, GO PC and stay XP-pro, Vista?, or go MAC and have two operating systems available to me.......to be honest I really don't know what to do at this point so I'm just sitting on the fence this summer.
I cover a lot of severe weather for the news so I use Grlevelx.com software for radar/mapping and gps stuff but then in news we also monitor the emergency services on scanners and use the BC780, 785, 396, 996 and all the Butel.nl software would have to work with Vista.........
I don't event want to think about it at this point :)
Mark
Unless you want all your files to go down the drain, use Linux :D My dad's friend was over at our place yesterday with a dell with vista on it. I don't know whether they were trying to fix something or install something but by the end of the night they were pulling hteir hairs out

but will all my programs and stuff that run on XP run on linux? I really don't know much about it, guess I should take a look at that option as well......

I thought about that too after I posted. I guess you just have to check if they're compatible or not.

yea....lot's of careful research I must do before deciding what laptop to upgrade to, I want to get the most powerful one I can possibly afford as well so I am good for awhile without upgrading again.

I should also mention the link I posted to the video on yousendit.com will expire in 11 days so download now! or I can just re-post it if needed later, then again you have it on you're site so that's good.
And I guess for everyone out there, if there are any off-season community events involving the robot/FIRST feel free to let the media know or at least let me know and even if I am not working that weekend at Global I can pass on the information to the assignment desk and you might get some coverage.
You can post here or email to my blackberry at stormcentre@rogers.blackberry.net and I will forward it to the desk. (I'm not always on CD but I can see how it can become severely addictive)
No guarantees of any coverage but at least when the station knows about something there is a chance it will get on the air, if they don't know about it...it has no chance.
I'm just disappointed I didn't get to shoot the GTR this year myself....but our other crew did an excellent job, oh well....maybe next year :)
