I am upset for whoever did this, If you come to championships to get free stuff and sell it off, thats not cool, give it to your little brother or something, use it to get other kids involved in robotics, use it to start a FLL team, use it as part of a presentation for your team. BUT DON"T SELL IT so you can make a profit off it.

Thank You

This Public Service Announcement was thanks to Google when i searched "Hex bug radio shack" because i wanted to see if they were on sale yet. because i lost mine on the 19th floor of the Hilton Atlanta Downtown.

The only thing anyone should be making a profit from it for is to help get people excited in seeing what robots can do and where they are going. Anyone trying to sell them off are not true FIRSTers. Whoever did this should be ashamed of themselves. If anything, I know some little brother or sister would love to see one of those, or just keep it.

Definitely not cool, but they have the right to do whatever with whatever they have.

I highly recommend using it for good, not for profit.

I saw that on Ebay this morning and thought the same thing. Oddly, I think the price was lowered significantly today. IIRC it had an opening bid of $49.99 this morning and a Buy it Now of like $80. I wondered if the seller had some inside knowledge of how much these things are going to cost at Radio Shack.

On that note, does anyone know how much they will be when Radio Shack puts them on the shelves? We have a robotics camp to do for junior high school age students this summer and I was curious if these would make good give-aways for the students. We don't have much of a give-away budget though.

Kinda disappointing, I think the hex bugs are really cool. Seriously if you don't want it/like it give it to someone else. Brothers and Sisters ALWAYS appreciate gifts. :D

Hmmm.... it was won at the webhug by someone from milford michigan... That shouldn't be too hard to figure out who it is...

Yeah... I saw that, too. I was originally going to post it but didn't see it in anyone's best interest.

That is beyond wrong. I can't stand when people do this. I hope no one ends up buying it from her.

Apparently her name is Barbara (or something similar), because her ebay name is Barbinmilford...

OK, I hate to sound mean and am probably going to get a large amount of neg reps for this, but I actually disagree with the majority of you. Whoever posted it on eBay has the right to, they own it. It isn't up to FIRSTers to patrol eBay as the FIRST give-away police. Whatever is posted there is their own buisness, not yours.

Total agreement here.

Don't you think you're making a few mountains out of mole hills? I mean yeah, they look cool and they're limited edition, but if someone obtained one through a legal means, then I have no reason to believe it to be in anyway unethical or wrong to do this with it. How would you feel if other people criticized what you do with your own posessions?

I expected a little more maturity out of you guys, not a witch hunt because someone did something you don't personally agree with.

I agree that that person is now the rightful owner and that he/she can do whatever they want with it.
Whether its unethical or not (I wouldn't personally do it), its not my business to pass judgement.
I could see the group that made it be upset, but, they gave it away, releasing all rights to it as the owner

They're going to be sold at RadioShack, how is this a bad thing? Am I missing something here? After reading the title thread I thought I'd read about how there are MOE Wobblies on eBay, or keepers or something.

Come on, lets leave all the ranting to the Curie Semifinal thread. ;)

It's up to the owner to make decisions about their private property. The only thing anyone should be making a profit from it for is to help get people excited in seeing what robots can do and where they are going. Anyone trying to sell them off are not true FIRSTers. Whoever did this should be ashamed of themselves. What a sweeping statement!

Who is to say that "using it for profit" is not for good? The owner obviously feels that it would do "more good" by being in the hands of someone else. The person who buys it may end up just as excited by robots as someone who had it given to them for free. In my opinion, keeping an item you do not want is MORE WASTEFUL than selling it to someone who does.

Please do not accuse someone of "not being a true FIRSTer" for doing something which is not unethical (and arguably beneficial). What it means to be "in the spirit of FIRST" is open for debate and interpretation. FIRSTers shouldn't "kick people out of the club" because they have a different perspective. FIRST is not a clique.

they are just bugs...

sidenote:
I couldn't make the webhug.
Stopped by to see Koko Ed at the HOF and he had already broken his pen.
But...he couldn't wait to show me his bug. He loves his bug. I felt a little sorry for the little guy at the mercy of Koko Ed.

poor little bug is right. :)
Im sure Koko Ed wil keep it nice and safe.

Anyways, I see both sides of the story. While it would have been nice if the person didn't want it to give it to a deserving person who would have been happy to have recieved one, it is (her) own personal item and (she) is free to do what she pleases to do with it.

Sure, everyone has the right to do whatever they want with their possessions but I guess I am just old fashioned. I figure if someone spends their money on something and then gives it to me because they want me to have it and think I would appreciate it then I shouldn’t try to sell it in such a public manner for all the world to see whether I like it and want to keep it or not. I think of it this way, if my grandfather gave me his pocket watch because he wanted me to have it, I bet he would get his feelings hurt if I pawned it because I wanted a new Ipod. Sure, I have the right to sell it and it is just a watch but is it worth having hurt feelings? Sure it is the owners right to sell it but I think it is kind of tacky and disrespectful. To each their own though.

I agree with the people who think it is the person's own decision whether or not to put it on ebay.

It was something that was won fair and square, and it may possibly be put to better use by giving it to a fellow team member or FIRSTer that may be interested in it, but if this is the way they chose to do that, I'll all for it.

Taking the (outside of FIRST) approach, I can only see this as being a positive impact to people who see this on ebay and question what it is.

Maybe by someone seeing this on ebay, they will realize that the program it was given away at is really cutting edge, and it may allow someone who has interest in robotics, and cutting edge technlogy ask where this came from and get involved in FIRST.

I'm sure none of you thought about that part when you started to shun the person who is selling it on ebay.

When old game pieces show up on ebay, will you shun those people who are legally selling those as well, or will you recognize it as a way to get more people asking what is FIRST, and get some new blood into the program?

Btw... this reminds me of a thread I started a long time ago.
http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30204&highlight=ebay

My thoughts back then was "I'll post them here whenever I find them so we can keep the FIRST items in the family." which I still agree with, but if they "got out" is it such a bad thing? No. I don't think so because of the aformentioned reasons.

Just my $0.02.

Before this gets too out of hand, I am a programming mentor and I just wanted to let everyone know that I purchased the 'bug' from ebay and will be using it when our team (River City Robots 1094) go out on demos. We were not lucky enough to make it to Atlanta:(

That was only for overnight shipping.
$3.95 was for standard 2-9 day delivery. (9 days is more realistic depending on where you are in relation to the seller btw)

I've seen shipping prices even more crazy on ebay in the past.

If you want something right now or next day, you can't expect to be a bargain hunter. You have to be willing to pay.

Awesome. This time we have "kept it in the family" so to speak.
Enjoy it. It's a really cool device.
If you want, I can post video of them from Atlanta, or of the one I was lucky enough to win there at the webhug.
I havent even gone through my camera to see the quality of the pics/videos I took there.
