As the official 2007 FIRST season ends, everything is calming down slowly. But we invite you to get ready for another Mayhem. Let the new members on your team get a taste of a FIRST competition. The Mayhem committee has started to plan on Mission Mayhem 2007.

- The competition will take place on September 8th, 2007.

- The event will be in Miramar, Florida (High school TBA). It will be inside a high school gym this year. So we don't have to worry about rain or flooding. The pits will be in the cafeteria.

- Registration fee is $250. Please email me at arefin.bari@gmail.com for initial registration. We will open up the official registration next month.

- Team limit is 35 teams. Please register as soon as possible.

- If you would like to volunteer for the event, please send me an email (arefin.bari@gmail.com) with your job preferences (Field reset, scoring, referee, crowd control, volunteer registration, team registration, field setup/breakdown), first and last name, email address, contact number, the high school/college/company you are represent.

- If you have a practice robot that a high school (interested in starting a team next year) can borrow, please let us know.

- As we get close to the date, I will post a list of restaurants, hotels and food availabilities at the event.

Finally, here is a little contest for all the artists out there in the FIRST community. We are looking for a logo and we need your help. In the previous two years, Jaine Perotti (an alumni of team 716) has come up with a wonderful logo. You can see both (http://missionmayhem.org/files/mmlogo.jpg) logos (http://missionmayhem.org/files/sfflogo.JPG) and get an idea of what we are looking for (Thanks to Bharat Nain and team 25 for hosting the files). The FIRST logo and DeVry University logo must be present in the Mayhem logo.

We are looking forward to see the Mayhem teams are going to create this year. Let's not have the nature create the Mayhem this time.

-Arefin Bari.

Arefin said it all right there. As usual Mayhem will need the great group of people which usually turn out to make this awesome event work. 1251 will be there in full force ready to lend a helping hand and try our best in the competition. Once again please let us know if you will be able to volunteer.

So Mission Mayhem will only be a 1 day event this year? Interesting.

I can probably make it to volunteer for field setup/breakdown. I'll send an email when I can confirm.

There are about 20 people who have recieved a PM from me about an hour ago. If you are going to participate in the contest to make a new logo, please check out the logo violation rules (http://www.usfirst.org/community/resourcecenter.aspx?id=650) before you proceed to make a logo for Mayhem. I understand that "technically" the rules will be violated. Once the committee chooses the top 3 logos, we will send an email to FIRST and ask them if we can use their Logo in the Mayhem Logo. Thanks.

Now I can't speak for Arefin himself, but when he first created the thread to announce Mission Mayhem, he mentioned that he wanted a new logo for this year and that it was indeed a public contest, and that was a few days ago. I do believe it was the lack of entries that caused him to send out the PMs.

On the other hand, I'm so excited for Mission Mayhem this year! I haven't been able to attend with my team in the past but I hope to convince them to go down this year, but I will be there with or without the team ready to help out.

Here's my two attempts at the logo.
I know they break FIRST logo guidelines, sue me.
They're in a zip file cause they don't fit neatly in the required filesize to attach.
Let me know what you think of them. Thanks.

I'll also plug PixelPerfect (http://revision3.com/pixelperfect) a great photoshop video podcast that I've learned a whole lot from.

Both logos seem to be perfectly fine (unless you want to go in there and measure pixel by pixel to make sure...). They both just lack the DeVry logo, but I'm sure that'll be an easy change.

Great job to everyone, especially Koko Ed, I'm totally loving the first one.

I have finally found time to attempt at this logo so here's my first attempt, attached is one with the black text, and one that blends with the background a bit.

Yup, I like Jaine's "disaster scene" logo. Disaster is what makes Mayhem fun (but it's inside this year if you didn't know). If you are going to help out, please register to volunteer through the site (when it's released), thanks.

Thanks for all the submissions Koko. They look great and definitely will be a competition when we have the meeting next week to see which logo we want to use.

how about we make a shirt with all of the logos made?
that way, no one is left out.
plus, all the amazing logos can be shown off!Although that would be a pretty cool idea, the problem with this is that shirts become more and more expensive to make with every additional color you put on there. Considering that many different people made each logo, and each logo has many different colors, it would probably cost way too much to put them all on the shirt.

So, unfortunately, one does have to be chosen. :( Unless someone can figure out a use for a collage of all the logos printed out on paper or something else.

shirts become more and more expensive to make with every additional color you put on there.

I am aware of this problem.... which is sort of why I proposed that. I'm sure some of the creators won't mind altering the colours a bit, and if the colours are limited to say, 4 or 5 in total, and we choose a logo or two from each artist, then we might be able to come up with something really cool.
But then again, it could just be something unrealistic that I am thinking of.

Hello Everyone,

First of all, thank you to everyone for submitting entries for the logo contest. They were all great and beautiful submissions. The committee and DeVry have voted and we have an official Mission Mayhem Logo. The criteria used to choosing the logo were:

1) You must have the FIRST and the DeVry logo in the Mission Mayhem logo without breaking the FIRST logo rules.

2) Use as few colors as possible so the cost of the shirts are minimal.

It is my pleasure to announce that we have chosen the smiling sun logo (http://missionmayhem.org/files/missionmayhem.jpg) created by Edward Patterson (known as Koko Ed on the forums). It is simple and uses few amounts of colors. Koko took the red from the FIRST logo and used it in the font with black border, also, took the gold from the DeVry logo and used it in the sand. He also has both FIRST and DeVry logo in the Mission Mayhem logo. The logo also has the “Florida looks.” Thank you Koko for taking your time and modifying the logo as we asked you to. =)

We have also released the Mission Mayhem website (www.missionmayhem.org) (Thank you to our webmaster, Tim Arnold and Michelle Celio). Please register your team through the website (payment information will be sent out at the end of June). Volunteers, please register through the site as well. You are an official volunteer only if you register through the website. We also have a venue. The competition will take place at Sunset Lakes Community Center in Miramar, Florida (we do have a high school gym as a backup arena just incase). Again, the date for the event is September 8th, 2007. We will have a full FIRST field shipped down here from NH. We are looking forward to another great event.

-Arefin Bari.

It has been brought to the Mission Mayhem Staff's attention that the registration forms for volunteers and teams on our website have been returning a bunch of gibberish code after you sign up, where the conformation screen should be. The code was merely a debug output that was accidentally left on, and has been corrected.

If you had previously filled out a form, please do not re-submit, as we have received all the applications successfully. Thank you :)

First of all, I apologize for not posting anymore information about Mission Mayhem 2007 for a good while. It's been a heck of a month for the committee members. Recently I met with the director of the committee John Burke and the right hand man for the event David Ellich. We worked few things out, worked on some details and we are ready to release more information.

The date didn't change. Mission Mayhem 2007, sponsored by DeVry University, will be held at the home of the Platinum Dragons (team 1345), Stranahan High School (Davie, Florida) on September 8th, 2007. The website for the event is www.missionmayhem.org ... few things still need to be updated which should be done by the end of this weekend.

Team mentors/leaders, you will be receiving information about how to make payments by the end of this weekend. Registration fee is $250. You can make the payment using paypal or by sending a check (info will be in your inbox soon). Please register your team by August 24th, 2007.

As I have mentioned before, you will only be an official volunteer if you sign up through the website. Please go to the "volunteer" tab on the website. Volunteers will be receiving an email by the end of August with their job assignment.

Help please to anyone who will be at Mayhem Saturday; we have a few fried components and are looking for:

1) a laptop with EasyC Pro installed; we weren't able to download code tonight - some kind of COM port problem with our laptop. I think I can come up with another one, but just in case.
2) radio modem (I'm assuming earlier years will be allowed). Our '07 modem has died. It was quick and painless. Our '06 has a broken antenna, but we may be able to fix it.
3) pneumatic tubing. We went through quite a bit of it with various arm removal activities (some intentional, some not - Thanks to Barry B's team).

thanks

In a little less than 48 hours, I'll be on my way to Mission Mayhem! (unless my ride is late...which it won't be, right Michelle? :P)

Sooooooo Excited!

The website has been updated. Please check the website for maps/directions, Agenda, Floor plan and etc. www.missionmayhem.org.

Based on past history, don't you think the website should have a link to a tropical weather forecast page?

I'm typing this from a Denny's just south of Daytona Beach, trying to keep the MacBook from getting too greasy from my dinner.

I can't wait to make it down there.

We went through quite a bit of it with various arm removal activities (some intentional, some not - Thanks to Barry B's team).

thanks

An update:
Got the COM port fixed; the IT guy at work said to uninstall it and let windows reinstall it; runs fine now.
So, I was able to download the code to the '06 controller. Runs fine.
So then, I tried the '07 modem; it works fine too. I guess all the problems were in the '07 controller.

It took a total of 5 minutes to do all that; too bad I couldn't do it in the hour and a half that I had 20 kids watching me Wednesday night.

So, HAZE has a radio controlled robot again. I guess all we need to do in the morning is rerun the pneumatics (and make a few improvements to the arm).

Wow.

Mission Mayhem was a BLAST.

I miss everyone so much already!
Thanks to Stranahan High and 1345 for graciously hosting the event.
Thanks to all the Mayhem Crew & volunteers for keeping everything running so smoothly, and to Arefin, George, and Drew for being fantastic voices of the competition.

This was my first Mission Mayhem, and I'm definitely adding this to my list of annual events.

Congrats to the winning alliance 233, 180 and 108, and thank you for your gracious professionalism in using your timeout to allow the finalists, 179, 744 and 1523, to repair a failed banebots transmission on our robot.

A few more specific thank yous:
Arefin - You do so much work and don't really get recognized... thank you for everything you do
Libby - For the Kamen luck, it worked :)
1251 - The loaner radio was a lifesaver - we were knocking out both partner's working radios
744 - We would have had no chance the final match the last match without your tranny plates... and even after we somehow managed to tear through them in a single match nobody was even slightly upset. Being partners for 5 qualifying matches was unusual but worked well in the long run!
179 - Was nice to finally get a shot to pair up and we did pretty well I'd say. Thanks also for trusting a rookie driver on a broken bot against an incredible alliance. Can't keep getting 2nd place though; next year!

And to everyone that came out and made the mayhem happen!

Glad I could help, Tim. Not like you needed it, you did a great job driving.

I forgot, in last night's post (I was so tired at that point, running around all day will do that to you), to give my congratulations to 233, 108, and 180, as well as congratulate all the other fantastic teams I saw for playing well, and playing graciously.

It was truly a great event, and I already can't wait for next year's. Although, we may have to deal with water on the field in '08 (even if it IS indoors!) :p

Now that I am recovered from Mayhem the whole event went pretty smoothly on a whole. Thanks to everyone from out of state who helped to put the field together and kept the competition running smoothly from the whole planning committee. Congratulations to 233,180 and 108 on the win. This was definitely the best mayhem yet. :yikes:

On behalf of 108, I would like to thank everyone who attended Mayhem and thank 1345 and 1251 for the support throughout the day. Especially our alliance 233 and 180. We had a great time and hope everyone else did. It's too bad everyone couldn't get FIRST place.:(

Mission Mayhem was my last opportunity to see this great game of Rack 'n Roll played. I will miss it - it has been a great game, created some magical moments that I will always remember, some fantastic robots, and it has encouraged teams to do their best.

Good stuff, that.

Mission Mayhem organizing committee - thanks for putting together an awesome event and for welcoming out of state FIRSTers to share the fun. May your event continue to grow and prosper. The teams were awesome.

This was my first FRC event to attend, and I wasn't disappointed! I was very impressed with the display of talent, enthusiasm, and sportsmanship displayed by EVERYONE there. I look forward to mingling and networking with other parents/mentors at upcoming events. :D

Welcome to the FIRST community Mike!

...pssssst Hey Gary! You got one on the hook! :D

Seriously, Gary tells me you've gotten a tremendous response for the HAZE team this year. Best of luck to you!

Don't worry Eric; Mike (and his son Nick) are hooked, reeled in and ready to gaff, along with everyone else who came - we brought 2 veterans (out of only 3 returning), 7 rookies, 1 in between, 3 mentors and 3 new parents.

We had a blast. The support from around the country (Andy & Mark, Jane, Billfred, KokoEd to name just a few I ran into from out of state - there were many more) was outstanding.

Special thanks to Billfred and team 1618 for letting us borrow their radio; it got quite the workout (we re-loaned it to one of the teams in the other elimination matches).

Did everyone else notice how slim and trim George Wallace looked at Mayhem? I hardly moved backward when we did a chest bump. Way to go George! Hopefully I can drop a few pounds this year.
