The Edge 102.1 a radio station in Toronto is having a facebook contest to see who can create the best group and get the most friends to join. The winner will recieve $7000.

So I created a group to give it a try. If I win I will donate the money to a rookie team in the GTA to help them get started in FIRST. I have not picked a team yet since I don't have the money also I don't know what teams are joining next season.

I joined and invited quite a few of my friends as well. I also added some pictures. :)
The largest group right now is for the Hospital for Sick Kids here in Toronto. It is easy to why it has grown. I we try I am sure that with our international friends it will work out. If not, Sick Kids Hospital is a worthy cause.
As of this post there is 385. If the 1200 invited join then we could sky rocket to 2nd place. Keep up the good work.

The winning team is about 2000 members right now, we can defiently surpass that number if we keep on going we got 450 people so far, with 1200 awaiting reply. Keep on going and hopefully we can get up to the top.

too large, take a look, when you click the links, it will bring you to your home page if they have been deleted.

Basically what they say in the video is don't spam people with invites to join the group. People have probably been getting annoyed at the amount of invites they received (Karthik said he got around 30), and Facebook decided to delete the groups that were spamming. I think it would be a good idea to try and send invites only to people that you think will actually join (people that have experience with FISRT?!).
The group is still around and is actually pretty high in the standings. It wouldn't be fun if it got deleted now.

Here's the judging criteria, from the Official Rules:
The Grand Prize winner will be selected based on two criteria. a) the Facebook group with the greatest number of members and, b) Best use of Facebook tools (ie: Group Info, Recent News, Photos, Discussion Board, The Wall, external promotion, etc) as deemed by our Judging Committee. Final update submissions must be accurate and are due Thursday, May 24th at 12:00pm. Judging commitee will review all entries and determine a winner.

Okay, so we didn't win. The group that won was given the $7000 to send Madisyn to an ability camp. The edge even kicked in an extra $3000. Now, don't get me wrong, this is a VERY deserving cause too.
Here's a little about Madisyn, from their group page:
"Madisyn had had several strokes in utero, one of them being very severe. It was a left middle cerebral artery stroke and caused damage to the entire left side of her brain and a few spots on the right side. They basically told us that she would never do anything.
The day that Madisyn turned 2 weeks old we took her home. I was so scared. She has made amazing progress and touches peoples lives everyday by her strength and will to do things despite her disability. She has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy."
Congratulations to them! And best of luck to their little girl!
Oh, and Vince, you're welcome! Michelle and I had a lot of fun editing your page. =)
Even though we did not win it was great to see that so many FIRST students gathered together to help out someone that 98% of us have never met. This is what I love about FIRST everyone helps and asks why later. And the best part is look at all the new FIRST people you can now talk to online and facebook because of this.

Great job, Vince! You had a very successful group, that will hopefully stay as active as it is now.
The winning group did, in the end, deserve to win. Their money will go to an excellent cause, and I hope Madisyn benefits from the experience she will now receive thanks to the Edge.
Kyle made a good point when saying we came together to help someone most of us have never even met. Another reason why FIRST is a truly wonderful organization. Just by getting everyone together for this cause is amazing. Kudos to you, Vince, and the rest of FIRST who supported him.
And since there won't be a FIRST network on Facebook (though that would be awesome), we should all just friend each other and make our own lil' network. It's always great to meet new FIRSTers. :)

I thought about it, but then realized that would open up a whole 'nother can of worms. If one organization wants a network, then alllll the other ones out there will want one, too. It probably is something facebook won't want to have to deal with.
