Normally there is not any power in the pits. Your batteries and drill chargers will be plugged in by the loading dock area. Which is about 75 ft from the field if that. This event looks like it is going to be very competitive and fun. See everyone there.

This looks like it's going to be a good competition. Maybe not quite as intense as IRI but still a lot of good teams going. It should prove challenging. Not to mention we can't turn down another chance to double keep during a full match. I'd like to know the same as GeeForce though. Are there going to be rule changes at Kettering?

joeweber
22-08-2007, 23:43
No power in the pits except tables at one end for lap tops. The floor is for basket ball and metal shavings would do it harm but you can machine items in the charging area. If some one would like to bring a trailer with machining in it we would love to have you. Contact shicks@kettering.edu for any information regarding Kettering Kick off or me and I can forward it to the committe jkweber@charter.net This is our largest event yet and we always have lots of fun. You can also tour Kettering University If you would like.

Ther are some rule changes that the committe has talked about but are still in discussion.

The following rule changes for the Kettering Kick Off.

The committee approved the rules changes as amended below....

Re-scoring on a spider leg that had a Ringer removed
INTENT: If a Ringer is removed and the Leg is scored again by the same color Ringer, the Leg will count as scored for that alliance.
Instead of being called "null" and "negated" as defined in <G15>, this leg will count for that color. Removing Ringer penalties still apply. If a Ringer is removed and later a Ringer of the opposite color is placed on the same spider leg, that leg will be scored for the color of the removed Ringer. A Spoiler would negate either condition. (Approved as-is.)

Robots can touch and be supported, but not totally supported, by Ringers, the players station wall, field side rails, or any other field piece and still receive bonus lift point.
Alliance Selection – 2nd and 3rd rounds
The alliance selection process will be as such:

Round 1: 1st seed, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th
Round 2: 1st seed, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th
Round 3: 8th seed, 7th, 6th, 5th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd, 1st (Deleted)

This is the most teams that we have had and if the size works out, next year we will add more teams. We want to make it the best experence for our teams so they will return next year. We have also add more seating. If anybody has issues , problems or praise please let Kettering know by contacting shicks@kettering.edu . We have had a great response for volunteers and this looks to be our best year ever.

From my experience, I've noticed that the Kettering Kickoff has had a tendency not to change any of the major scoring rules or bonuses.

I do hope, if they plan on not doing serpentine draft as joeweber mentioned, they at least don't pit teams 1 and 8 against each other right away, they did that at IRI and it was essentially the strongest alliance VS the weakest alliance = Almost no chance of alliance 8 winning. :o

That is kind of the point - if you have earned your position as Alliance 1 by getting the highest ranking, you are given the easiest path to the finals.

That is kind of the point - if you have earned your position as Alliance 1 by getting the highest ranking, you are given the easiest path to the finals.

Perhaps, but it should still be reletively fair to the other team (heck, in sports like football don't the worst teams typically get the first picks?; at least, I seem to recall it like that, I don't really watch sports that much so I'm not sure). The official FIRST games haven't used the old draft system for several years now, I'd have to think they have a good reason for it. Some place like IRI its probably not that big of an issue because of all of the great teams there, but at smaller events I could see the potential for the #1 seed to scoop up a few good teams, leaving the other alliences extreamely underpowered.

In my oppinion, getting first place in seeding should not be a neer automatic one way ticket to victory. The finals are a chance for any of the 8 alliences to come out on top, its not supposed to be easy for one of them.

If the #1 seeded team is that great, they should be able to pick a good allience without needing to go first on both rounds of selection. ;)

GaryVoshol
19-09-2007, 15:05
Yes, sports teams that finish last in the division get the first pick in the draft - for next season. Teams that finish first in the division get things like home field advantage to help them in the playoffs. Also, you will usually see the top team against the "wildcard" team, similar to 1 vs 8. Heck, consider the NCAA tournament pairings.

I think the serpentine draft for alliances was a pretty good compromise to level out the competition. Whether the competition of the #1 alliance should or shouldn't be leveled is another question.

I wonder if anyone has done any analysis of upsets - 8 beats 1, 6 beats 3, etc - before and after the serpentine draft rule.

One thing to consider, is that sometimes the #1 seed is not the best robot at the competition. They may have been lucky in their alliance parings, gaining wins from their partners. Or maybe had luck with their competition - they won, but the opposing alliances also ran up high point totals to contribute to the ranking formula.

J@GMFlint
19-09-2007, 16:44
One very effective way of "leveling the field" at smaller events is to not let the top 8 pick from each other. I've seen that many times, and have to admit things get very interesting and good scouts are worth more than their weight in gold at these events in particular.

I do have to say, that the current selection rotation 1-8, 1-8, 8-1 does seem a bit peculiar and one I haven't personally seen in 7 yrs. But, we'll just have to see how it goes.

I'm sure it will be fun anyway!

haha, i keep hearing commercials for this on Banana1015, it says they will be broadcasting there.

For those who aren't Michiganders/Kettering Kickoff faithful, Banana 101.5 is the local hard rock station, and they have been broadcasting from there from Kettering Kickoff for at least two years.

Also on the pick system, i think that 1-8, 1-8 is much better than 1-8 8-1. The old school draft (1-8 1-8) rewards teams that are successful, while the serpentine tends to screw the one seed. They get a great partner and an average partner. Deeper competitions like Kettering or IRI can support the old school draft. Look at IRI the winning alliance was not the #1, 2, or three, but the four. Look at IRI '06 even the finals were #5 v #6. Great strategy beats great robots any day of the week.

Courtneyb1023
20-09-2007, 11:27
One of the downfalls 1-8 8-1 system, is when the regional only has 24ish teams, the 1st place alliance team will likely have to pick the statistically worst robot. This is kind of unfair because in some cases where the last place team does not even have a working robot, thus 1st place alliance is left playing with only 2 robots. All of that hard work with little chance of victory. Just a thought.

Not necessarily; just the one the other seven alliances didn't choose for whatever reason. (968 and a radio-problem-plagued 254 didn't seem to do so terrible at the 24-team Cal Games last year when 1516, which by that point was stuck doing defense due to a shooter malfunction, became their third partner by default.)

Just another point of data.

2:45 is a little less time than is necessary for as few as four seeding matches per team.
The elimination matches will take at least 1:31, and could take up to 2:16.

The ones who are scheduling (and playing) the matches think the intermediate times are pretty important. We can't just show up and wing it. We need to know the times far enough in advance to generate match lists and print up the sheets. Not only that, it would be nice to know when we can expect to get home tomorrow. :)

Kettering Kickoff was a great success. We enjoyed putting it on and hope everybody had fun. If anybody would like to comment on the event we can use that information to make it better next year. We are already developing new ideas on the lay out and going to work on more displays for the kids to see.

Wow, that was really a spectacular event. Some of the matches rivaled IRI and the Championships in intensity. Thanks a bunch to both 67 and 1243, you guys were spectacular partners and I was glad to be working along side such great teams. Congratulations to 47, 33, and 379, it was a lot of fun playing against such a powerful alliance and the matches we had were some of the most fun I've had the pleasure of driving in. You guys definitely deserve your win.

Thank you to all the teams and volunteers who worked so hard to make this competition the success it was. I was a little worried when I saw the floor plan that showed the batteries had to be kept in a separate location, but really that little storage area we had to put them in was a rather good place for them. Also the pits seemed like they were pretty open and having the practice carpet set up proved useful, and gave us a good place to set up our mobile light.

WOW, it was an excellent competition as usual. Kettering puts on a wonderful competition and this year was no different. I was greatly impressed with how good all the teams played.

We were absolutely shocked that everyone passed on 469 and to get a chance to play with our WMR winning partners was quite sweet. I was also amazed when we picked team 815. They played excellently and were a great asset to our alliance. Our alliance played well together and we almost had them.

Congratulations to 47, 33, 379, you guys played masterfully. I am always amazed by what kinds of strategies that 47 and 33 manage to come up with and today was no different. There is no shame in losing to you guys.

This is a different kind of congratulations, it goes to a team near and dear to my heart, team 2137 the Oxford Robocats. This year we helped found their team and we helped them get secure in FIRST. They attended our strategy sessions and we had mentors and students helping them all throughout the year. During the season they built a ramp robot but struggled to get it to work effectively. For Kettering Kickoff they redesigned their robot and became a hanger, and they scored their very first tube in their second match. The look on the student's and mentor's faces reminded me why I love FIRST, they had built something with their own hands and watched it succeed.

a little shout out to "BOB", some of the best defensive driving i have seen since championships.
as for the event itself. perfect. don't change a thing. the number of teams, the layout. you nailed it. make it an invitational but don't make it any bigger. thanks to the young lady setting the teams up. you kept things moving and i was happy to get out of the event at a reasonable time. i just hope you had time to enjoy the event.

Team 85 would like to express its thanks to all of those who gave of their time, energy and effort in staffing the Kettering Kick-Off, and to all of the teams who participated. The BOB team had an awesome time!!! What a great event to bring freshman to, helping them to experience what FIRST is all about. Thanks for the shout out from 910, will pass the compliment on to our drive team.
We are honored to have been awarded the Safety Award and regret not being able to personally accept it. We apologize for any awkward moments this may have caused, Team 85 believes in the importance of staying for the whole, not just in part, but had to deal with time limitations, and we had pushed it to the very max.

This was such a great event. The teams there were all top-notch, which led to some of the most intense semis and finals I've ever seen. Congrats to 47/33/379 as well as 494/469/815, two amazing alliances that both deserved the title. I'd also like to extend a shoutout to the 67/910/1243 alliance, you guys were unbelievable scorers who were, in my opinion, the dream alliance.

One last shoutout, to the 910 coach who made the comment to me about GP after we were eliminated (if he's on CD he'll know what I'm referring to). It lessened the sting of the loss substantially to know personally that the teams that were going on were excellent, fair people. Can't wait to see you guys score that double keeper at ARC ;)

I'd like to thank all the Kettering Kickoff planners and participating teams for staging a wonderful offseason event. This is the first fall competition 48 has ever participated in, and it turned out to be the perfect setting in which to initiate our numerous rookie kids into the world of FIRST.

Thanks to Teams 1075 (go Canada) and 1 for having us on the only international alliance at the event. :p

Congrats to our buddies on Team 379 for being an integral part of the winning alliance. Your great defense on the far side of the field brought back many fond memories of Buckeye. ;)

I want to thank Team #47 again for selecting us to play with them at the KK8. Finally we win one together after many near victories at past events! Thanks to Team 379 for all their great defensive play, together we had a great alliance.

Thanks to 494/469/815, 67/910/815, and 27/85/397 for all the great competition all the way through. All 3 tiers were very close and we went to 3 rounds on all 3. Very tough competition all the way through. Great job on Offense and Defense by everyone.

The Kettering Kickoff has evolved into a truly world class event. The Killer Bees have been to every Kettering Kickoff since it began and it just keeps getting better and better. Expanding to 36 teams and having 6 qualifying rounds per team really improved the caliber of this event. Great Job by all the coordinators, refs, judges, volunteers and competitors! Can't wait until the KK9!

I would like to thank teams 47 and 33 for giving us the opportunity to compete with them. After that days performance, we weren't exactly sure we were going to be selected. Thanks for having the confidence in us to be part of your alliance. We did a great job strategizing between each match. This was my first experience as a drive team coach, and it was amazing!

A Congratulations also goes out to the other 7 alliances that competed in the elimination rounds. Each one of you were legitimate contenders, and put on a great showing during these rounds. We were forced into 3 matches in all three rounds, quarterfinals, semifinals, and in the finals.

Congratulations to our NEOFRA (North East Ohio FIRST Robotics Alliance) partner, team 48, for their success at kettering. You guys did a great job!

Finally, Thank you, to our other NEOFRA partner, team 2010, for their spiritual support, as they drove up to michigan to cheer on teams 379 and 48.

GeeForce,

I know how hard it is right when you lose that last match that knocks you out. It's a bummer. The thing that impressed me was how you knew our robots were tangled at the top, and instead of just going full out reverse and ripping off whatever came off, you seemed to "work with us" to try to untangle the mess. It ended up not mattering if either of us "got loose" because the score was pretty lopsided at that point near the end of the match, but what you did allowed us to move on undamaged. That's why I thanked you for your gracious professionalism. Class move.

Congrats to the champs. You guys rock. Thanks to our partners. Soooo close! Thanks to the judges for the "Robot Design Excellence" award. It's truly appreciated and will sit proudly at the front of our trophy case!

Question... did anyone catch the presentation of that award on video? Our guys missed it. Thanks!

The best words said is "What an Event".

There is a different flavor for the off season events. The closeness of teams in sharing everything for the day is a great feeling.

It is said to win an event you need a competitive robot, great partners and most of all .........luck to have all the pieces fall into place at the right time.

There were 8 alliances...all quality...all with competitive robots, all great partners.... any of which were deserving to win.

Thanks to all the hard workers that made the Kettering Competition another great event.

Special thanks to Team 33 - Killer Bees, the insight into the game was awesome. Team 379, thanks for the skill to defend and climb at the last second... my pacemaker shorted a few times :).

My drivers,,,,,,,, all rookies...all panicked....had to calm them down when the robot would not react to their commands.

To Josh, Niki and James our graduated seniors who came to help.... When we were totally smashed (at lunch) with no hope of repairing the arm they had flying fingers and fabricated a replacement bucket from scrap parts..still a bent arm but it did work. We were out of the competition without you. I will miss you this year at school.

Thank you to all who attended the Kettering Kickoff!!! I am still trying to recover from the months of planning and hard work. I am pleased to hear how everybody had such a great time. We had some of the best teams in the world attending this event and they showed why they are the best as well. Huge congrats to all who either won (47, 33 and 439) the game or won an award. All of you were just incrediable.
One thing that did disturb me though was finding out that Head Ref. Ron Webb was let go by FIRST :ahh: . What a sad loss for the kids. I have always found him very fair and willing to listen. Our team for 1 will miss him terribly this up coming season :( .

I know this is really just a repeat of what has been said above, but I think it's worth repeating.
Thank you so much to teams 47 and 379 for being our partners through this one. After several attempts with 47, we finally got one!
And to all the teams we played with and against at this event, thanks for all the great matches. It was absolutely incredible, as usual, and I was thrilled just to have the pleasure of being there.
Congrats to all the teams who won the awards, they're definitely deserved. There were some top notch teams at Kettering, and it was awesome playing with everyone.

this was the first time i went to a FIRST (lol) compitition and needless to say i was really astounded, when we practiced the cheers in the driving room i really wasnt too enthused, but once i got to the event i totally understood what it was all about, when i left my old school i thought i wouldent have another "home" but i have found it again in the chief delphi robotics team

anyway, kettering was really awesome, everyone there played really well, seeing the even has made me become more motovated to be involved for upcoming compititions

FRC Head Refs are not employed by FIRST, they are volunteers that answer to the Regional Volunteer Coordinator, and by proxy the FIRST Volunteer Coordinator. It is the Volunteer Coordinators' decision on whether or not certain individuals are allowed to referee. In this case, the FIRST Volunteer Coordinator deinvited Mr. Webb from the Detroit Regional after massive pressure due to slandering on these forums. If the Michigan regionals are run by rational people, and I'm sure they are, they will ignore the silliness from last year and will not discriminate anyone from voluteering in the positions they are most qualified for.

I know I'm just repeating what everyone has said but here it goes anyway...

I'd like to thank teams 33 and 379 you guys were awesome and it was a pleasure playing with you guys. Another thanks to all the teams there, thanks for the great matches.

Also congrats to all the teams who won the well deserved awards.

Special thanks to Josh, Nikki (sorry but I just can't spell your name), and James for helping us repair ourselves during lunch, we would have been out of it if it wasn't for you guys.

Overall it was a great competition and I'm already looking forward to next years competition.

A huge thank you to teams 33 and 379, our matches were great. Congratulations to all the teams that participated. Also, thank you to Josh, Nikki, and James for all your help without you guys we would of been in trouble.
