So I'd like to know... even though the regional is being moved from Columbia to Clemson (about 125 miles away), who is still planning on coming this year?

Mark Jones

I just returned from a Palmetto Regional Planning Committee meeting at Clemson University. This regional is going to be AWESOME. Clemson is very excited to be hosting this event and I could not be more pleased with the effort that is going into this Regional.

Clemson University, as well as the supporters from the Columbia area are fully behind this venue. The excitement in the room just radiated with all of the discussion around this event.

Clemson will be hosting this venue in their Littlejohn coliseum, directly on campus right across from the football field, Death Valley…talk about scenery!!! The Clemson campus is incredible and the surrounding area has so much to offer…lakes, beautiful golf courses, historical sites and spectacular botanical gardens.

You don't have to be a Clemson fan to enjoy this venue and their southern hospitality. For those great teams that have graced the Palmetto Regional in previous years, you’re in for a real treat this year in Clemson. For those teams that have not been to Palmetto, this is the year you need to attend…trust me.

We were wanting to go somewhere different this year. Now we can go to a different place and still enjoy the people and teams from Palmetto. Anyone know of a hotel close that we could stay in. Not familiar with the town since we were in Columbia the last two years. Thanks and Team 1249 looks forward to the change.

just go to google maps and type in Clemson hotels and it will map out a few options.

Thanks, looks like we will probably stay at Comfort Inn. It seems close to everything. That is where we stayed in Columbia and Pittsburgh. All three West Virginia teams will once again be back in Palmetto.

1251 will be taking a vote on where our second regional is as we get closer to the build season. We will be sure to keep the wonderful Palmettto folks posted though. Either way it's been a fun regional over the last three years and we wish you luck with the new location for 08.

Palmetto has been good to me and my teams the past four years, but this year the Capitals decided to gas up the bus for Chesapeake. When travel became a given no matter the regional, we just couldn't make the case competing during the kids' spring break in Week 5. (So, naturally, they decided to compete during my spring break in Week 3.)

That said, it will have to take something very important for me to stay in Columbia those three days.

Team 1251 is "almost" ready to go. This should be another fun 11 hr drive followed by one of the funnest FIRST events. We can't wait.

Also, does anyone know if there is going to be a practice field?

No different from florida.

Despite being one of the smaller regionals, there are a fair number of power house teams in attendence. Such as: 1251, 343, 1319 [congrates on all yalls week 3 regional wins], 1369, and 342:D
I think some of the closest and most exciting matches will be seen at Palmetto. Now lets just see is LookingForward agrees with me.

Did you add in the extra distance of the regional being at Clemson University? Once you go 11 hrs, what's 13?

By the way, where are the out of town teams staying? I'm glad were close by, so we can help those of you traveling.:)

This regional is really shaping up to be powerful. Just knowing what's happened the first three weeks of competition, there is a solid group of performers coming to Palmetto.

Just a few...keep in mind I haven't seen everybody so this isn't at all a definitive list...

281 Entech is a fast and solid machine
342 Another solid scoop and shoot design...with bling.
343 I'm biased but it's probably the best robot/team we've had in nine years
1102 They had a rash of bad luck at Peachtree...they WILL be dialed in at Palmetto.
1251 Won Florida, Won Palmetto last year..pretty much win Everywhere.
1261 The Robo-Lions have a solid machine and a great team...another 342.
1319 What can you say...won it last year, won Peachtree with us this year...always solid.
1369 I haven't seen them, but the Minotaurs are always impressive.
1746 Look out Palmetto....here comes OTTO!

...and that's just the teams I know about...there are always great sleepers out there....I can't wait to see some of the other teams.

Best of luck everybody....let's have a blast.

Close, we were finalists at Palmetto last year, the 1319, 832, 342 alliance beat us, however we did bring home the Palmetto gold in 2006 with 11 and 247.

All in all, Palmetto is shaping up to become another powerhouse regional, and based on 1251's past experience at Palmetto, it will once again be an awesome event.

The refs, announcers, pit assist, logistics, and other volunteers are working overtime to get this event ready. You will be happy to learn that Terrell Burch will be the Head Ref again.

I will be the announcer for the 4th year in a row and Ted Creech, the MC from 2006, will be back.

The Clemson Coliseum is on campus and a few miles from the cluster of fast-food restaurants. There won’t be any walking to Wendy’s like in Columbia. There is (or was) a Hardee’s about 5 blocks down the hill. But I don’t recall it being there a few months ago when I was on campus. One of the school’s dining halls is about 2 blocks away (up a REALLY steep hill) and serves the public for about $6. In the same area are some other sub shops, Mexican, and a convenience store near the dining hall.

Classes will be in session, so all the places will be open. They should be able to handle 1000 FIRSTers, but not all at the same time.

Clemson has a great campus life and Engineering. Computer Science, Math, etc programs. (I am biased because I am a graduate and have 2 sons going there). Friday at 12:30 there is an Engineering School campus tour. You can sign up at the website if you can break away or come back sometime later and see what Clemson has to offer.

Campus tours also on Sunday

Oh well, just have to go the week after that.

Edit: I would recommend for the sake of GP, that the people who live in SC to take the tour some other time. Giving out of state people the opportunity that they might not have other wise.

Yes, we were Palmetto finalist in 07. I think he might have meant Florida Regional, which we won in 07 and now 08. :p

We are going to have a very small team up there. We just found out this week we are going to the World Championship so most of our students can't afford 3 trips in the same season.

From the Palmetto Regional site:

This year's team social will be held at the University Student Union. FIRST students will have access to the Harcombe Dining Hall, Clemson's ultimate eating experience, where you can find everything from a meat + three, to salads, to pizza. Edgar's, a gathering place for recreational diversion, features bowling, billiards and video games. The Union Courtyard offers an area for socializing, relaxing or strategizing. And most important - our FIRST guests will want to check out the Palmetto Ballroom where they can learn all about Clemson's College of Engineering and Science from departmental displays and representatives. Just a few minutes' walk from Littlejohn Coliseum, the Union facilities will give students an opportunity to eat, play, relax, and learn more about engineering and science opportunities at Clemson University.

To the best of my knowledge everything is free to the teams. That was one downer of the Peachtree regional (having to pay for the games), but there were lots of them that's for sure. Peachtree did have that huge mall to get lost in, which was nice to wander through.

As far as BBQ, the place out on Hwy 123 is Big Dave's, very good:D The smell from the cooker out front will make you want to stop by. It's a little hole in the wall type place, but those seem to have the best BBQ. There are a lot of places to eat at around Clemson. That's one of the results of being a college town; fast food:yikes:

Frank Lanford, the Regional co-chair provided me this data about the social...

no DJ...just some music....Dancing is not allowed at a FIRST Team Social...bad past experience/liability.

Yes..it is my understanding that the games are free and students can overflow into the quad area.

---
I have noted that there are only 10 bowling lanes and 6 or 8 game tables.
That is a lot for 500 students to try to use at the same time.

Thats a bit totalitarian is it not... almost right out of the dark ages.
Don't seem to be much else to do there...
It's ironic dancing NOT allowed at a closed event such as the social but encouraged at the public event of the matches where bad dancing to bad music seems to be a normal embarrassment.

Kind of a broad question don't you think :p

Its a hurdler, 2 speed with a max of ~16.5 fps. 2 stage elevator with a pneumatic claw gripper.

just to correct... we would NOT be considered in the herder or rabbit category, we just happen to be fast (12-13fps) and can pick up a ball well. in hybrid, the second ball needs a lot of work, but at the current point in time, we can consistantly score 20-24 points in hybrid. if you saw peachtree, you saw that we hurdled backward, but now we are going to install a ball punch to hurdle forward, and hopefully faster.

Anything that will theoretically increase your efficiency is always a plus :D 1251 did some work as well, in one of our matches at Florida our claw took a good hit and broke (thank goodness for spares), but we beefed it up a bit in hopes to make it better.

Not to fret, it wasn't you haha, it was in our second to last qualifying match, (if you watch the video you see one claw kinda hanging around and we start to do laps)

You defense was pretty darn good, I don't believe you had any impeding penalties called on you, mostly because you played intelligent D, (not senseless bashing but keep away and such).

well... that would be illegal, so it doesn't matter. when you hurdle, the ball has to touch the floor or another robot before it touches yours again.

So I asked who can hurdle and catch the ball. I don't see in the rules where this is illegal. Can you tell me where it says it?

Well its not illegal, it just doesn't count. In the rules it states that a ball is counted as hurdled after it has gone over the overpass and come into contact with the ground or another robot prior to it contacting the hurdler of said ball.

While it does count if a team were to throw it over the overpass into a fellow alliance members possession, I have not seen or heard of this being accomplished.

In putting together stats for my announcer trivia, I have the following stats:

36 teams
21 have been to a regional already (9 were at Peachtree and 7 at FL)
2 teams have over 12 wins
2 winners and 3 finalists
4 rookies
2 of the 3 winners for Palmetto 2007 are returning
8 states represented
20 of the 22 SC teams will be there (1287 went to Peachtree, and 1618 wnet to Chesapeake)

You are bound to see old friends and make new ones.

I recall they said the thread would only be on tomorrow and Saturday.

However, I second the call for reports. As the Capitals are taking a pass on Palmetto, now I've gotta root for the rest of Colatown in the form of 1293, 1398, and 1959*.

The feed was great, but if i could make a small request, could you guys not put the over drive splash screen up every chance you get, that would be great. Tis a great feed, the qualitiy is great and the music is good, too. But, it would be cool to see some of the action on the field, such as switching robots and what the announcer does between matches, etc.

Its a shame we weren't able to head down there again this year, but one of our alumni may be volunteering (he goes to Clemson). If you see someone with a volunteer badge that says "Alex Hulette," I'd appreciate it if you could tell him I said hi and that we went with the crazy-fast arm design.

I just got back from the team social. It was awesome. I went to eat, and then bowled a couple games. Went right in and found an empty lane. Also very short and fast moving lines for food. There was a wide variety of food at the dining hall. Other regionals need to take notes from this one! Great job by the planning committee. What did the rest of you think? (the ones that went)

Yeah, we are ranked 30th, but we're happy with our performance so far. We can hurdle pretty consistently, and we're working better than we did at FL where we were seeded 17th, we've just run into a bit of bad luck with alliance partners tipping and the like. Plus we won Innovation in Controls, so that's a bonus for us.

On behalf of team 1251, I would like to extend a congratulations to the winning alliance of 386, 1758 and 2183 (i believe that was the team sorry if I got it wrong). You guys were an excellent alliance, I just wish our robot's elevator was functioning for the remainder of our semi final matches with them.

Also congrats to 342, 343 and 393/804, you all had a great run, I thought you woulda had it.

It's a little interesting to be the spectator at Palmetto for once. After waking up around 5:20 to get to Clemson in time, my girlfriend and I bore witness to some crazy matches (perhaps to match the crazy decor--orange and purple, really? ;))

First, thanks to Donn Griffith for completely blowing my cover this morning in the pits.

Big ups, of course, to our districtmates at 1398 on their second Chairman's win. They have figured something out. (When they were reading the award, Keenan had figured it out already. They were having to whack themselves with pillows to keep in check. Energetic much?)

Further ups to 386, 1758, 2483, 342, 343, and 804/393 for what may well be the most epic battle I've seen in five years in the finals. Whoever recorded the feed has to get this series on TBA; it was that intense from the stands.

Much respect to anyone whose robot is still working. This year was living proof that the alliance that lasts the longest gets the gold.

Thanks, of course, to all the old friends I crossed paths with of varying geography. (If I was just here for the robots, I'd have watched the webcast. It's the people that get me to drive 250 miles in a day.)

A shout-out to Looking Forward, who was in the building today if pit admin was to be believed. Hope you were impressed.

And, lastly, a pause for applause for Mike Bryan of 342 who is moving up I-26 to the Upstate in the near future. Mike was their team leader from the start, and whatever he's done is working--year-in and year-out, 342 is a top-notch team. Upstate teams, I think it's now recruiting season. ;)

I have to give a huge shout out to the Palmetto Regional Chairman's award winner, Team 1398, the Robo-Raiders. Awesome job guys. I hope to see everyone again next year, if not in Atlanta.

The Looking Forward announcement was my idea of a prank, but it really got people looking all around.

Well I finally made it to a regional in person.
Someone...I'll be nice and not point them out said the weather should be fine... if the engineer thing don't work out you have a future as a weatherman.
But thanks to the rain my work was rained out and I was only a hundred or so miles away so... managed to get there just in time for the semi-finals :D
To anyone thats never been to the event in person... the webcast do NOT do justice to actually being there and feeling the vibe.
What a show! From what I've been told Champs is even more exciting and fun.
To the folks that put together the Palmetto and run it I say thanks.
I've seldom have enjoyed a free event as much as a FIRST event! :D
Great job folks.
To 2483, 386, & 1758... congrats on winning the gold.
Was awesome seeing a team from NC winning!

As a side note; Yeah I have in the past expressed a slightly negative view of the dancing that goes on at these regionals, and had no plans of becoming one of the bad dancers but... well the excitement was just too hard to resist and before I knew what was happening I was joining in with the crowd in the stands. :ahh:
Also... I just like to say how impressed and I will admit surprised how welcoming and polite the people (students and adults) were there.
I heard no swearing, no bragging or thrash talking that can be often heard at any highschool sporting event one might go to.
Instead the few pits I stopped at didn't mind an outsider checking out there robots and were eager to answer a question or show off a feature of their robot and didn't mind breaking it down so a Protronie could understand.
My hat is off to all the teams and officials that put on such an interesting and exciting event.

That was the most intense finals I've ever been in!!343 and 804, thank you so much for playing with us; by no means did you let us down. Big congrats to 2483, 386, & 1758. I really would have liked to had 386 on our alliance, but it is no wonder would they didn't last. great job guys. Between your auton. , defense, and laps, you guys took away our thunder( ok, bad humor).

Like Drake said, all the gremlins came out during the finals. 342 lost the ground going to the distribution block and had problems clamping it back because of a striped screw. 343's limit switch malfunctioned, bring their arm up in auton. I almost find it funny, we are built very similarly to 1726 and we faced the same fate as them:rolleyes: But despite my whining, 2483, 386, & 1758 won completely fair and with great displays GP.

A note to LookingForward: don't be so quick to right off Palmetto as anything but intense and exciting.

1319 would like to thank 1249 for picking us to go into battle with. 2187 was also a great alliance partner. We gave it our all in taking it to 3 matches in the semi finals, although it was not as many as the five quarter finals matches. Our robots held up through all of these matches, and if things had fallen a little more in our favor I am sure the three of us would have lasted until the very end.

First of all, a big thank you to the volunteers that made the event a success.

I would like to give a special thank you to our alliance partners; 845 and 1270. It was fun to revive the 2005 Florida Alliance. Sorry we couldn't go all the way. 845 your robot was a great hurdler and your hybrid mode was impressive. 1270 you guys were able to accommodate to different strategies, the best second round pick in my opinion.

Unfortunately during Semi-final match two, one of the Banebot Planetary gearboxes that drive our elevator binded. A six minute time-out jusy wasn't enough time to fix it, forcing us to do just laps. This event has thought us many lessons and we are glad that it happened here and not at the Championship event.

Congratulations to the winning alliance. 2483, 386 and 1758. You guys deserve it. We were so happy that 386 was in the winning alliance, you guys were a great help during the whole event. Team Voltage saw that we had a small team at the event, so before our matches they gave us scouting sheets on our opponents. You guys are awesome and you deserve the win.

I would also like to thank team 1249 and 1319 for being the great neighbors. Both of this teams provided us with parts, materials and tools. Thank you so much.

Gene. The scoring computer replaces the ties with the score of the replayed match, so there is no archive of those scores. As I remember, the first Quarterfinal between Alliance 4 and Aliance 5 was a 72-72 tie (I am sure of the match, but not of the score), and the first Finals match was a 52-52 tie (this one I am sure of the score).

There was only 1 tie in the quals. Match 18
11:48 AM 18 RED (2430 1466 1225) BLUE (1876 2187 2483) tied with 28 pts

Thanks for the GREAT job managing the Alliance Selection.

I've been waiting to post to see if everyone was happy with the event, because I can tell you that everyone down by the field, the scorekeepers, refs, MC, and Announcer were THRILLED beyond description at the entire event.

This was my 4th year as announcer and I thought I had seen it all, until Saturday. Like an earlier poster said, we about had 5 heart attacks watching the speed, endurance, energy agility, maturity, and strength of the robots AND team members.

The circumstances that necessitated rematch in the semis was the toughest call I have ever seen made at a regional. In retrospect, running the rematch is supported by rule T16 which says a rematch is warranted whenever an event occurs that affects game play or score caused by the field, equipment… or field personnel. A scoring error clearly falls under this rule. But if the scoring computer program is well written, it should have disallowed any ball bonus score over 24 points, making the possibility of a 4 ball score impossible. We did not know at the time and still do not know if that type of data validation is present in the scoring system. With no paper score sheets, and a rule against video review of play, there was no choice but to rerun it.

The reason I bring up the situation is because I was so impressed by the patience and reaction of all the observers through delay and the ups and downs and uncertainty. Talk about Gracious Professionalism, WOW!

All of the goals of FIRST were met or exceeded by this bunch of folks who got together last weekend in Clemson. We might have arrived as strangers, but we all left as best friends. There was no foe or opponent. There was no win or lose. Sure there is the thrill of victory for the highest score, and some teams were more successful than others. But we all came together for a common goal.

There is nothing worse as a volunteer coming away from an event with a bad taste. On the other hand, there is nothing better than coming away with the elation we felt seeing the defeated teams cheering on the survivors, and seeing the students agonize with SMILING FACES when their robots deployed arms early, tipped over, or failed to deliver the extra 2 points at the buzzer.

These memories and lessons learned will last a lifetime.

Congrats to everyone!

Our 5 match quarter-final w/ 1319 and 2187 was maybe the craziest set of matches I had ever seen until the finals. Except for the chain on our arm slipping in one of the quarter-final matches, I don't think there were any other mechanical problems with the alliance.

1319 and 2187 were awesome alliance partners. 2187 made 9 laps in the quarter-final match we tied, and 1319 kept the ball in the air all afternoon. They made us look good.

The competition was great with a lot of great 'bots. I think that shows in the close scores in the elimination rounds.

Hope to see everyone next year.

I just want to thank everybody for a great regional. Everyone there was friendly, helpful, and just great...plus it was in Clemson, and you can't get much better than being right next door to Death Valley!

Big thanks to 1251, and 1270 for being such a great alliance. I know I'm just a college student mentor, but 845 means as much to me now as it did when i was a student. I didn't see a team there that didn't have an impressive design in some way. These teams shouldn't be ashamed of a thing..even if they didn't win anything, they went to a regional and acted in a highly respectable manner, with an awesome machine, and had a great time while doing it.

Gotta shout out to 342 and 343 as well, excellent designs, and ya'll played some great matches there in the finals.

-Jay

:) Thank you very much. Shout out right back at you. 845 really stepped it up when 1251 had the lifter problems! I love playing with you guys. One of your drivers and I have a long history racing dragsters and that rivalry;) showed Thursday during the exhibition match. If if wasn't for 1251's elevator breaking, I defiantly would have expected to see yall in the finals.
Could you pm me your driver's email?

Congrats 1398 on the Chairman's Award, you guys worked hard for it, and much thanks to 2483 and 386, we couldn't have done it without you guys. Here's hoping we'll be able to work together at the Nationals.

The regional started out sorta down for us, it's good we finally got everything working before the finals... good job to everyone there, you played great.

This year's regional was one of greatest for our team. We're a VERY small team. Probably no more than 10 dedicated students worked on our bot and only 4 attended the regional. Reaching the finals was a FIRST for our team.

I would like to thank the Forsyth Alliance (1746) and M'Aiken Magic (1102) for picking us to be on your alliance. We had fun battling those epic 5 matches in one double elimination round against the same alliance. :D

Speaking for our team and mentors, it really meant a great deal to them to get picked and go onto the finals.

Thanks again and we're looking forward to seeing everyone at the Palmetto regional again next year!

Now that everyone has had some time to recover from the busy build and competition season, the Regional Planning Committee would like to here from YOU! Please take a few minutes to answer a couple of questions about the Palmetto Regional.

1. What worked, what did you like best?
2. What didn't work, how can we make it better for next year?

Thanks for your input.
