Good Luck to all teams attending, we hope you will help FLR will continue in providing great competition. As usual, Teams 340 & 424 will be looking forward to see our fellow Rochester area teams there as well as new faces.
So who else is coming and who's pumped!?
SparX 1126 will be there!!!!:D
And we cant wait. FLR is a great regional && personally i have had a great time in the past 3 years both as a student and now as a mentor.
Good Luck to all the teams that come as well. :)
Pretty sure that Team 250 will be there this year; we go every year.
Can't wait to get the build season started.
Good Luck to all this season!

Team 910 may be coming this year. We'd really like to try a new regional this time around besides WMR and GLR. But it looks like FLR is filling up fast.
MOE 365 has grabbed one of the last slots for FLR! We had a great time last year and expect the same again in 2008. Looking forward to seeing and playing with y'all.

Yeah!
MOE is coming back to FLR
Now that makes my day....
I can't for the competition to start

Last year they said there were spots for 40+ teams.
FIRST always seems to expand the capacity of the regionals a little later so don't give up yet if you don't get in.

Now added is the HOT team, 67. I can't belive how many great teams are going to be at FLR this year. What a great year this is going to be, I hope the game allows for some great competition!

5 Rochester teams, boo if they dont make it in.
im sure they will be making room for the locals to make it.
I heard form a little birdie, the reason from the MI teams is that they don't want to do back to back regionals and FLR is closest for week 2. it's still a sweet thing, im looking forward to it.

How are you able to see the list?
And why won't FIRST let us see it anymore?
What's the big secret?
Magic...
Actually
The list is in my head...
Well actually I have kept track of every team that has ever attended the FLR. I looked at that list and guestimated. I can't say for certain if there are any teams on the wait list. If I remember there was a pending number of 6 or 7 and 1 open spot on Sunday. HOT joined us and that leaves a number of wait list teams.
I now see that there are 34 teams registered the, 2 new ones are:
1405 Hoselton/OCM Technical Services, Inc./Crosby-Brownlie, Inc. & The Charles Finney High School
1585 Discount Tent Renter & Red Jacket High School
If FIRST sticks to their norm they hold a number of spots for late registering rookies. I know we were working on getting the Syracuse area to recruit new teams & there have been no rookies to register yet, I don't know if there will be. Of course we know better than to hold FIRST to their "norm".

As far as I know Fairport HS/Minerva HS (578) will be there. They like to register for their travel regional first and then the local one.
On November 8th there will be unrestricted registration for additional regionals and I bet you'll see the regionals suddenly expand their capacity. And all those teams that could not get in before should be able to get in then.

This is 174's Atlanta year. We always go to Buckeye and we interchange Atlanta and FLR. Not sure why we rather dive an additional 5 hours...but I think we do better and those at Buckeye remember us more. It's all the way the Teacher Mentors see it...
I, however, will be at FLR and be volunteering again (and holding some things to give out...like cards...hee hee)

Apparently Victor made the same exact move as my team did. I know for certain that it's very expensive for Fairport's team to travel anywhere, because of the massive team size of 60 students.
Fairports aware of the problem, and they are going to try and see what they can do within the next week. Accepting such a large team is going to be very challenging for Finger Lakes so we will see what happens. Hopefully Fairport/Victor can get in, they are 20 minutes away from the RIT Campus.
Finger Lakes Regional at the Blue Cross Arena by 2012?

Team 2228 will be there. :)
Team 316 will be there!! 2007 was the first year we were there and it was awesome; the event was run very well, the food was good, the pit layouts are convenient, the team social was perfect, the teams were so gracious and friendly, and we love snow! Add it all up and you were our number one choice for 2008. Can't wait to see everyone again ~ Thanks for hosting it!

Hopefully we will continue to thrill the crowds.

It's nice to see FLR break the 40 team barrier.
Team 639 will definitely be back this year. FLR has become a much-loved tradition for us. See you all there!

Odd...174 chose FLR and Boston this year rather than the usuals. They are up to something and I have yet to get a good explanation from them yet. At least they are getting into other regionals.
You leave a team for three years and everything you know changes for the good. Why on earth would they want to do that? haha.

They probably passed on Buckeye because it wasn't as impressive as in previous years. FLR is looking more like Buckeye did last year than Buckeye is now.

Maybe it is the date change?
We used to go to GLR and Midwest, but with the dates changing and problems arising, we havnt been to midwest in 3 years.

I think all teams deep down inside want to come to the Finger Lakes Regional! But only a few are lucky enough to have it fit into their plans! Those of us in the Rochester area are really fortunate that it is close and accessible to us!

indeed, it was not a good thing to have to see.
FLR has an excellent pedigree going with three HOF teams (67,191,and 365) four former national champions{65,67,73,and 365) and two original FIRST teams (20 and 191. I'm not sure if 250 counts) and a set of consistent strong performing teams who have won numerous regionals and awards.
And in my opinion the most spirited regional out there.
It's gonna be a blast!

It's built for spirit, Dylan. Though it would be nice if they dumped the portable bleachers this year and opened up the stands behind it so it could open up the floor on the other side and have more seats for the patrons.

I agree, bring it up to the FLRPC.
From what I remember from the post FLR meeting no one is allowed to talk to this guy. Not even from the planning committee and for some reason he insists on the portable bleachers.
With 40 teams and a push to get the public in there there is going to be no room at all in there at all. I hope people in FIRST read this take time to take that into consideration before there are big problems the second week. And punishing the teams and saying "well you guys need to figure it out and make room" is not the answer neither. It's not the teams job to go out of their way to make room for the public. That's the planning committee's job. There's a big huge space not being used for anything but a place for kids to go off and toss footballs around and play hackysack.FIRST needs to help the committee make the best possible event there is and let them talk with this guy so they can let him know what they need so they can give everyone the best possible event there is to best sell FIRST to the Rochester community.Nothing kills the momentum of selling a program than having a completely miserable experience attending the event no matter if it's free or not.

Ed,
I brought this issue up a couple of years ago & it comes from higher than the planning committee. I suggested rotating the field & using both sides as ends & ditching the bleachers but I was told that would give is less space. (granted it would give us fewer "good" seats) I also asked about opening up the other pull out seats & the problem then is that the seats are too far away from the field. Maybe we just need to get bigger bleachers, or re-construct the field house for our needs.

They keep the doors locked. And you don't want to be standing around outdoors for long periods of time this time of year around here. Just ask the Bouchers.:D

They built the Field house for activities such as FIRST...though having robots play hockey in Ritter Arena would be sweet.

I meant more like a arena like the Tsongas or Garden where they disassemble the hockey rink or basketball court when not in use.
I suppose I never really noticed the seating issue too much, being on drive team, but now that I reach back in that vast expanse I call a memory, It was really crowded and poorly set up. What if they scrapped the portable bleachers and set up the field with the long dimension next to the 107, 108, 109, 110 and 111 bleachers (refer to this, to avoid being completely lost http://www.rit.edu/~field/specialEvents_seating.php3) and Then set up the big screen opposite from them. That way, it may be a little further from the pits but then people get good seats. at the very least you could justify the field to one corner. That way, house seats would be on 2 sides. I don't know, something.

But that requires logic and clear thinking. Don't we require a process to do that?

But if those seats were pulled out, 191 would have no place to put their gigantic banner.
Anyways, I don't really see what the issue is. Last year there were tons of empty seats (especially over in the "quiet area" by the concessions). Even in the good seating areas there was lots of room. Maybe we can start seriously worrying about this once FLR is as big as VCU or Chesapeake. Until then, lets enjoy the regional, letting X Cats and GRR take all the best seats as usual (since they're the loudest), while the rest of us settle for the slightly less good seats.
Everyone wants a good seat though, correct?

Dont feel bad if they do. I'm my team's Welder and our herder mech. keeps getting cracks around the welds from the force of the arm smacking the ball. So one might break off during FLR, but we have like 5 spares.

My TIG welds are no push overs i took a Welding class last year for 2 hours a day all year during school. But the metal around the weld gets heat treated after a weld is made. This makes the metal weaker. That is why i hate welding thin metal, steel or Alum.

But seriously, I would go with 1930. That's where you are now, plus they don't get nearly as much crowd support as the Arctic Warriors anyways (if my memory serves me).

I agree with Koko Ed. It doesn't matter who you cheer for, just cheer! Especially for all the mentor and volunteers that keep events like this possible.

Hello all, need some info, Teams 65, 67 and 68 are trying to drive thru Canada with all of our robot stuff. US and Canada customs still have not given us any answers about forms or processes to pass thru Canada to get to FLR. It will save us about 2.5 hrs of drive time if we can pass thru. Has anyone done this in the past? We know about the forms and processes to attend an event like waterloo. We want to just pass thru.

Team 1503 may be the best source to ask since they have to deal with crossing the border so often.
Of course with the new changes no one may be able to tell what will happen.

In all the years I've been travelling to competitions in the States with 296 and then 1503, we've never once been stopped on account of tools and equipment carried across the border, in either direction. On 296 we never prepared any paperwork; on 1503 last year we had an itemized list of the contents of the cargo van (listing items and country of origin) as well as an export control form for each way, but were never asked to show anything to anyone.
I don't think the rules would be any different for just passing through. Someone at GM might know more; I imagine it would be common to go through Canada when visiting the Tonawanda plant, for example.
Tristan Lall
25-02-2008, 18:36
Technically, if a company needs its employees to pass through Canada with some equipment, it's supposed to possess a temporary importation bond. That's a lot of paperwork and a long wait at both borders. (I've done this with the University, and a bunch of equipment; it's no fun.)
On the other hand, you can make the trip as a normal traveller; it's legal, but they can still search you, and compel you to pay duties. Odds are, you'll be fine, but you could be directed to wait for an agent to search through everything, negating the time savings. Assuming you've only got conventional tools, and nothing in saleable condition, you probably want to do this.

Some of those questions, actually, most of them are all opinionated and will not be known until the end of the season. Almost no teams have competed in a full match and can tell what their % is. Id rather have them be a picture and just a summary of the team. :). Plus if they did all FIRST teams it would be 1500 different cards to collect. Its a trading card game nightmare!

I'd like to just note that Alex is saying "bring it on gentlemen" because he knows I am going to beat him...again... and then can bring up that technicality.
Thanks DarkFlame145! Looks like we'll be able to get through Pennsylvania before hitting the ice/snow.
Now about this laser tag....time, place, cost?
I haven't heard anything back about the team trading cards...did all the FLR teams participate?

How can there be 49 cards when there's only 40 teams?
rw55ryan

The base team cards will be handed out, on thursday. "Limited Edition" cards will be handed out throughout the competition.
There is 49 cards because there is 9 "Limited Edition" cards.

My guess is really good past robots, like 2005 Division by Zero, or 2006 SparX, or 2007 Lunatecs.
Just a guess...

makes sense, I would like to thank 2228 for doing this.
Well I got into Rochester tonight, unloaded my stuff and then the freezing rain started. I couldn't have cut it any closer as they say tomorrow will be worse. I will be at setup tomorrow and ready to go Thursday.
Alex, why do you continually say things that are both wrong and also get you in trouble. Twinkletoes is a good name for you as your head is in the clouds and you are continually dancing trying to get out of trouble.

Or maybe all of the winners of three years of FLR. That'd be nice.
Just want to give everyone coming from out of town that the weather for the next day isn't looking too good. Its currently raining freezing rain. We should only get a few inches of snow. Hope everyone gets in ok!
The Trading Cards look great! You put a lot of time into the project and I can't wait to see ours!!

No problem, we're extremely happy you guys came back to FLR and hope to keep you coming back for years to come. Also were psyched to be pitting next to you guys so don't hesitate to ask if you need anything! Good Luck!
Hi all!
I'm going to be getting into Rochester on Friday at 8:00 AM, at the Greyhound Bus Terminal. I just thought I'd put it out there, if anyone would be able to give me a ride to the Regional?
Thanks so much!
Looking forward to a great weekend,

Update from Rochester:
-Practice matches are running well with few field errors.
-Very few teams fully inspected before Lunch, A lot of busy teams in the pits
-I believe there are four shooters here, all look sharp
- Cammo cammo everywhere with 65,768 and 1511.
-Filler line is working good, were averaging four robots per match.
FLR looks great again, I can't wait for qual. matches!!

yes, but i believe it is only accessible by RIT faculty and students. RIT requires that the computer be registered, and all this other stuff. So, if you can find an RIT student or staff with a laptop, you'll be all set!

At GVSU for WMR, IT sets up a user name for the robotics people, I guess that RIT isn't catering to the robot crowd in that respect, then?

Does anyone have a match list for friday and saturday they could upload?
Jaybee1405
06-03-2008, 21:07
Today 1405 had:
3 complete "fall-aparts" during practice rounds
2 fires :ahh: (1 during a practice round that everyone oohed and awwed at.. hahaha)
5 laps/round (when working semi-correctly)
1 tread fall off our IFI traction wheel (it was riveted on great, I think the alum. plates by the lane divider helped rip it off)
With regards to the robot, Thursday basically sucked for us. Here's to hoping Friday and Saturday will be better :(

Here are the three pages of the match list.
I photo'd them earlier but page two came out blurry, sorry :-/
They are large pics so I'm linking them instead of posting them.

All but 3 robots with complete inspection with only minor issues on the last 3. Looks to be a good regional with the teams that are here.
As for those that want to know about the outcome of the Laser Quest challenge I have the report in. We were only able to get one match in before the place closed. The Rochester players would not divulge any of the maze before we started. Even though it was announced a lot of times the Rochester people hid in there homes while only a few brave souls dared to meet the challenge. It was almost a hard fought match with one old guy. Some of the quotes:
that's highly improbable steve, seeing as ED and I cleaned house last time we were on teh same team, so teh real question is whether or not your ready to get the dye basted out of your hair by us youngins? :p
You're all talk old man. You never come.http://smilies.vidahost.com/cwm/cwm/blah.gif

Well I guess that says it all. One old man vs Rochester. Poor Rochester, they are all weeping now. Please feel free to comfort them tomorrow as they all went down in defeat. Poor Koko Ed who came in lower than Twinkletoes and even a rookie that had not played before.
It was a fun night and I felt really really good, yet humble (well maybe not) at winning the challenge.

well this issue is that RIT is on spring break now and since most everyone who works at ITS is a student there is nobody there to even think about doing this. I know the Regional Committee members are reading this thread so maybe they will think about it for next year.

Good regional so far, can wait until the seedings.

Standings. (http://www2.usfirst.org/2008comp/events/ROC/rankings.html)
Thanks for posting this link to the standings!
I had looked at the standings before I left tonight, but had only focused on our own standing (which really kind of surprises me, to be honest). But checking this out again, I see that the team that helped us get started is #1! Wow! - and to think I saw them ingloriously lying on their side earlier today! No wonder everybody on this thread seems so quiet (dazed and confused?). Who would have thought the two Niagara County, NY teams would occupy half of the top four seeds, at this point?
I think back on the last month or so, practicing with #378 in an old fire house, on a floor that was barely to size of a field (if that), and not even close to level. Having various problems (that at least we never really solved). Congrats, Circuit Stompers! And Good Luck!
Oh, and as far as standouts goes, c'mon - #0020 was #1 practically all day, and was a member of more 80+ point alliances (of which there have been 13) than anybody (4 of them, two of which scored in the 90s).
Four teams had three 80+ alliances: #0067, #0191, #0378, #1126. Hey - there's #0378 again! ;) They may hurdle backwards, but it looks like they're for-real, guys! I don't know how they're doing it, but my best guess for our own team is that our drivers are excellent, and work well with other alliance members. (We were only in two.)
We have been doing good most of today. At one point we had some power issues, but they were quickly fixed. I hope the snow doesn't throw too much off tomorrow. So, does anyone want to go outside and make Snow Robo Coaches? :p
