What and where are the fewest number of cuts to the bar of gold that will allow you to pay him 1/7th each day?
(my favorite riddle)
It only takes two cuts.
Day One: You make your first cut at the 1/7th mark and give that to the worker.
Day Two: You cut 2/7ths and pay that to the worker and receive the original 1/7th in change.
Day three: You give the worker the 1/7th you received as change on the previous day.
Day four: You give the worker 4/7ths and he returns his 1/7th cut and his 2/7th cut as change.
Day Five: You give the worker back the 1/7th cut of gold.
Day Six: You give the worker the 2/7th cut and receive the 1/7th cut back in change.
Day Seven: You pay the worker his final 1/7th.

Three buddies on spring break stop by an old hotel. The clerk charges them $30 for the room; the travelers pay $10 each.
Later that evening, the hotel manager realizes the clerk overcharged the three buddies - the room should have been $25. He gives the clerk five singles and tells him to give them to the buddies.
On the way to the room, the clerk thinks, "There's no way to split five dollars evenly between three people. I'll just give them three dollars, pocket two, and nobody will know the difference." He does so.
Here's the riddle:
Each traveler originally gave $10, then got a dollar back, so they paid $9 each. 3 X $9 = $27; the clerk kept $2. $27 + $2 = $29; where did the other dollar go?

their is no other dollar. Why would you ADD $2 to the $27 the three men paid? You subtract that & get the $25 the motel keeps. That $2 is the what the clerk skimmed for himself.

The St. Ives riddle was used in "Die Hard - With a Vengeance" by Jeremy Irons' character.
The man's eyes were bandaged after the operation. He took the bandages off in the tunnel and the first thing he ever truly "saw" in his life was the same darkness that plagued him since birth (kinda sounds the same as being a Red Sox fan all your life, moving to New York, switching to the Yankees, and realizing that oh noes, you're still pretty much rooting for the same dark entity......sorry, couldn't resist......). Having been reassured earlier in the day that the operation was a complete success, he couldn't take this unexpected disappointment and thus ended his life.

You've been sentenced to death in an obscure foreign country which has a strange law. Before the sentence is carried out, two papers -- one with "LIFE" written on it and one with "DEATH" written on it -- are folded up and placed in a hat. You are permitted to pick out one of the papers (without looking), and if you choose the one with "LIFE" written on it, you are set free. Otherwise, the death sentence is carried out. On this occasion, a mean-spirited acquaintenance of yours, bent on your demise, has substituted the paper with "LIFE" written on it with another one with "DEATH" written on it. This person gleefully informs you of what he has done and that you are doomed to die. You are not permitted to speak to anyone about this misdeed, nor will you have a chance to switch the papers or the hat yourself in time. How will you avoid certain death?
After you draw one of the papers, swallow it. The jailer will be forced to check the remaining paper to determine what the one you drew said. The jailer will of course see a paper with "DEATH" written on it, assume you drew the one with "LIFE" written on it, and set you free.
Three surgeons and a clumsy cook go camping in the remote wilderness. The clumsy cook stumbles over the campfire as he is serving the surgeons, injuring himself and dumping hot stew on the hands of the surgeons. The cook's injuries need surgical treatment. The surgeons' injuries are minor but open. It turns out they brought the equipment necessary for the cook's surgery with them, and they can use the campfire to sterilize the tools. But there are only two rubber gloves. Because of the different surgeons' skills, all three of the surgeons are needed to operate on the cook, in sequence. How can this be done without any of them being exposed to the blood of any of the others?

The first surgeon operates with the first glove inserted inside the second one. The second glove is removed, and given to the second surgeon, who then continues the operation. Both the second and first gloves are then removed from the second and first surgeons, respectively. The first glove is turned inside-out, and put on the hand of the third surgeon. The third surgeon then inserts this hand into the second glove, and completes the operation.

You have died and are in limbo. There are two paths. One leads to Heaven, and the other to Hell. In front of each path is an imp. On of the imps always lies, while the other always tells the truth. If you can only ask one question, what one question can you ask that will guarantee you know which path leads to Heaven, and which leads to Hell?
Ask one imp which way the other imp would say to go to get to heaven. Then take the other path.
The lying imp would point to the path to hell, the oppisite of what the truthfull imp would say. The truthfull imp would also point to hell, as that is where the lying imp says heaven should be.
A boy was at a fair and went to a booth where a man said to the boy, "If I write your exact weight on this piece of paper then you have to give me $50, but if I cannot, I will pay you $50." The boy looked around and saw no scale so he agrees, thinking no matter what the carny writes he'll just say he weighs more or less. In the end the boy ended up paying the man $50. How did the man win the bet?

A large truck is crossing a bridge 1 mile long. The bridge can only hold 14000 lbs, which is the exact weight of the truck. The truck makes it half way across the bridge and stops. A bird lands on the truck. Does the bridge collapse?
No, for two reasons:
1) If the truck is exactly halfway across the bridge, it is more than likely centered directly above a pylon - one of the bridge's strongest points. As long as it stays there, no difficulties should arise.
2) Given current technology and fuel efficiency, I would speculate that in a half-mile, a 14,000-pound truck has used at least a bird's weight of fuel, making it below the weight limit.

You are walking along a path and find a fork in it one way leads to an endless pit the other leads to a perfect civilization. There are two brothers standing at the fork (one standing in front of each path). One of them always lies and the other always tells the truth. You can only ask them one question to find out which path leads to the civilization. What question do you ask?
