Hey there,
as some of you know, there is gonna be an Israeli off season event.
Based on your experience, what music goes best in an FRC event.
The poll is based on style of music, but you are more than welcome to post song names etc...
Ill start with Cotton Eye Joe :D

And i voted for Rock, Metal and Techno

A small factor is local taste. Buckeye Regional mainly uses Top 40 hits, and I don't think anybody really complains about it. During resets we get the occaisional YMCA, Cotton Eyed Joe, and the Chicken Dance.

NO MORE "COTTON EYE JOE"!!!!

I'm not the biggest fan, but if they don't play Cotten Eye Joe at New Orleans or Lone Star this year, I will be very disappointed.

So Techno, Rock, Local (Cotten Eye Joe, etc.), and a bit of the others isn't bad either.

I voted for rock (but it must be at least 15 years old), techno, metal, and other. The 'other' I would like to hear is a bit of funk, maybe between matches.

I think that the music played at events should please everyone, but play more "regional" type music to appeal to the local teams. For example, at the Hawaii regional, music that they prefer in Hawaii should be played. It may or may not be different from what we listen to in the continental US, but it gives a "we're not in kansas anymore" type of feeling.

So, for an Israel event, music that is currently listened to in Israel should be played. (As for me, I put Rock, Techno, Hip Hop, Pop, Local, and other- being line dances enjoyed by the people who like dancing on the field.)

So you guys don't like classical eh?

There’s a lot of great classical & orchestral pieces that would be awesome at a FIRST event:
-Ride of the Valkyries
-William Tell Overture
-1812 Overture
-Sabre Dance

And then there’s all the great soundtracks:

-Duel of the Fates (Star Wars ep. I)
-Wheel of Fortune (Pirates of the Caribean)
-Requiem for a Tower
-(I'll think of more)

Techno (preferably trance and drum-and-bass) is always a winner. So is classic rock and hair-metal.

But this is an Israeli Off-season event, so I’d say play what’s popular over there.

Zyik
05-11-2007, 18:16
Play whats popular around there for sure. Although for classic FIRST you can't beat the YMCA.

Personally, I will be very unhappy if Cotton Eye Joe is not played. It's become traditional.

Ok, I am just going to say one thing about the music FIRST played at a particular regional.

Multiple members of our team were offended when the regional we attended played several offensive songs such as: "Bringing sexy back" (which happened to be the worst). I don't know if that was just the DJ they had or if the problem has already been taken care of. My only point is that the Regionals should be family friendly as children frequently attend the regionals.

FIRST shouldn't be known for the music it plays but for the actual competition and its mission.

My only point is that the regionals can play whatever they like. Just as long as it is family friendly and not include explicit phrases, inuendos, or anything else of that kind.

We had several other problems with that regional and as a result we have decided not to attend it again.

P.S. I will only give the name and/or date of the regional if I am either giving it to a FIRST official or a FIRST official says that I may do so.

With what I said above out of the way.

I have a few ideals when it comes to first music:

1) what I said above

2) they must play: YMCA, Maraina, The Chicken dance, The electric slide, and Kryptonite (well maybe the last one is asking a bit much :D)

3) It shouldn't be so loud that you can't hear the person next to you. This becomes annoying when you are trying to scout and coordinate spirit in the stands.

synth3tk
05-11-2007, 21:38
We know it shouldn't be known for the music, but we can discuss it, just the same as talking about multimedia/webmastering. On-Topic, I must agree that the music is WAY too loud. I couldn't even hear myself think, although the acoustics at Cleveland State is awesome, you barely hear anything happening on the other side of the curtain.

Yes, the classics must remain. I'll post a video of some people dancing to "Cotton Eyed Joe" from last season on YouTube later.

At one of our off-season events, our DJ played Also Spratch Zarastrustra (2001 a space odyssey), Duel of the Fates, and the Imperial March during the finals. It was definitely a good matchup.

White and nerdy!

synth3tk
27-11-2007, 18:00
lol, Buckeye played that last year. Very fitting, though some of us weren't "white" we all felt the same way. Generally, I liked the selection of the music we had. I don't pay it that much attention, but I'm sure we'd all miss it if we didn't have it. Personally, the only requirement is fast-paced songs, [nearly] any genre, after the 90's-era.

I wouldn't mind Battle of Yavin by John Williams, or Tatakau Monotachi from FFVII or FFVII:AC.

I'd think the overture (http://www.thephantomoftheopera.com/poto/media/Overture.mp3) to Phantom of the Opera would be quite cool - FIRST event music needs more pipe organs....

I don't mind any kind of music however I would like it if they would turn it down a little-- at the Arizona regional we were calling desperately for a tether--our pit crew mis heard because of the music volume and brought a hammer.

As a human player I wore ear plugs. It shouldn't be that way.

I can't get enough of Welcome to the Jungle, Thunderstruck, and Back in Black. Rock all the way.

I remember that Toronto had a significantly better song list than most regionals I've been to last year. Whoever picked that one out... good job.

Sirius, The Middle, White and Nerdy, and the Final Touchdown should be played at all regionals for sure.

Interactive songs that are commonly played that people like would be stuff like cotton eyed joe (though it is a bad song when you have a pneumatics leak in your robot and you're waiting for it to be over)

yeah... if u like darude, there is a compilation series you should check out called "Euro Club Hits" --

it's pretty clear that dance music is coming back around the world -- just check the recent big American hip-hop and R&B hits which are clear rip-offs of the european dance style.....

here's the direct iTunes link to the "Euro Club Hits" series.....

As long as the song has a fast tempo and a HUGE amount of bass then its good for robotics. So of course like every said Sandstorm is good but check this out, i think it also is good for robotics
Sweet Rave Lights and Song (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6343561511676200458)
If anyone knows Spencer from our team hes in the process of making those lights himself for the 26 hour bus ride lol. The mentors are gonna love it lol.

If I remember correctly at the West Michigan Regional last year we heard the FF7 Battle Theme and the FF7 Boss Battle Theme. That brought back some memories ^_^
Wow that would be amazing, actually just mastered the game recently again. But I do admit i actually listen to FF music as background music to anything. FF7 is the best of course but the old school FF5 and FF3 music is nice lol.

Heres another good song and video for robotics
Flux - Bloc Party (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6539803142427122476&q=flux&total=5546&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0)

Also a lot of the stuff by Basshunter and Gigi D'Agostino
Gigi D'Agostino - The Riddle (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5647465491357118668&q=The+riddle&total=5559&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=4)

Those are pretty amazing videos

And finally theres plenty of DDR songs that are good for robotics too:
B4U
ECSTASY
INSERTiON
OUTER LIMITS
NEMESIS
ya there is way too many for me to list.

Especially the rock songs like Tatakau Mono Tachi and Battle in the Forgotten City.

Some songs I'd like to hear:

> Wooo by Vitalic
> Real Gone by Sheryl Crowe
> Braveheart Techno Remix
> (for awards) Mr. Dabada by Carlos Jean
> Backup music for Kanye west's "Stronger" by Daft Punk (sorry, I like techno, but I don't like the rap that goes with it in that case. Luckily, a recording of only the music w/o kanye west is available)
> Sweet Dreams by Eurithmics (come on, it's a classic)
> Cobrastyle by Teddybears Sthlm & Mad Cobra
> The Ska Remix of the Tetris Theme
> Mission Impossible (modern)
> Sandstorm (Permanent Green Remix v2)

And... yeah that'd be good.

Most things I've heard at FIRST events are alright. Just make sure you have variety is my suggestion. It gets pretty boring to hear the same things over and over.

Repetitive songs get stuck in my head, too. Hearing "I'm Blue" all the time at Nationals this year was not that fun...

But most popular songs will probably be good!

But this is an Israeli Off-season event, so I’d say play what’s popular over there.

Don't get me wrong, classical music is good, but I cant really imagine classical music at a regional or championship. A metal cover of a classical song would work though.

I think the best two genres that go with FIRST music is techno and metal. I have two songs stuck in my head that would fit a regional pretty well.

"Guitar vs Piano 1.2" by Goukisan
"Still Fly" by The Devil Wears Prada (maybe not, since the majority of the song is screamo) *shrugs* Just a thought

TV On The Radio - "Wolf Like Me".
It has the perfect timing for a match. Frenetic for 125 seconds, then goes down tempo for 60 seconds (field reset), and picks up again.
Would have been perfect for this years game. "When the moon is round and full, gonna teach you tricks that will blow your mongrel mind."
The subject matter may not be appropriate if you interpret the lyrics as such. However, it does reflect how FIRST can "infect" you and change your life.

First off, Daft Punk should be a must at every regional :D. I can't tell you how many times pulling Robot Rock on my iPod has gotten me pumped for a match. Plus, you know, techno and robots go together.

Otherwise, the music should preferably be intense, energetic, and stuff. That's part of why I think hard rock / metal works better than pop. Stuff like Thunderstruck's more exciting than stuff like (insert most popular music). Some hip-hop works, preferably if it's more "rock" and less hypnotic / same thing over and over again.

Also, I'm in the minority here, but do we really need the Cha-Cha Slide playing during a match? That really does nothing to contribute to a match's excitement, and it really only makes sense in time-outs.

I would love some of the more epic sounding classical pieces, such as the 1812 Overture, Ride of the Valkyries, In the Hall of the Mountain King (the last one is almost exactly the length of one FRC match, too), etc. Also, rock is good, as long as it's not too recent, because newer rock isn't so good in my opinion.

However, what I really want is some GOOD ELECTRONIC! Not Sandstorm, not Daft Punk, how about some Infected Mushroom? Anyone from Israel want to back me up here? Or perhaps go to the London trance scene and take some Prometheus and put it on the loudspeakers. For anyone who knows what I'm talking about, O.K. Computer (the song, not the album) by Prometheus would be epic. Also, any song on Corridor of Mirrors (the album this time) by Prometheus would make my day.
