The company I work for has allowed us to use their computer lab for our FIRST Robotics team.
However I and our IT technician can't get Inventor 2008 or 3ds Max 2008 to install. We keep running into tis message, even though we have full Admin rights:
"This installation is forbidden by system policy. Contact system administrator. C:\MaxInstall\support\msxml\msxml6.msi"
We have brand new HP computers running Windows XP Professional.
Just as an experiment I tried installing 3ds Max 9 (last year's version) and it worked fine.
Has anyone else had this problem with Inventor 2008, and found a work-around?

Although what you describe sounds different, you may want to try uninstalling Adobe Flash Player - I know with older versions this would cause problems about 80% the way through install.

This sounds like the same problem you posted about in this thread (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59907). Did you investigate whether the problem is the same one as the last two posts in that thread described? Does Raul's solution fix the problem?

I PM'd Raul. No reply yet.

Sanddrag: Unfortunately Autodesk doesn't offer phone support to FIRST Robotics teams. They do have email support but the response is a little sluggish.
Popo308: I'm trying to install it on the default location - the same C: drive windows is on.
ok if you can try to install it on a external or network drive somewhere other than your C:\\ drive. that worked for me when i had that problem

I had the same issue but with Autocad 2008.
The solution I found was getting the XML6 SP1 version from microsoft's download site (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=D21C292C-368B-4CE1-9DAB-3E9827B70604&displaylang=en). I then replaced the msxml6.msi file with the one I download (it has to be renamed from msxml6_x86.msi to msxml6.msi). Ran the install and it worked fine.
P.S. I signed up just to post this for future reference for other people.
A simpler method is to make sure that MSXML 6 is installed under Add/Remove programs. It is probably already installed and that is causing the problem. Otherwise install it from Microsoft's website. It is free.
Then in the directory where you have all the install files, find setup32.ini. Make a backup copy of this just in case.
Then edit the original using notepad. Use find to locate the [MSXML] section.
Insert a semicolon at the beginning of the two entries showing the EXE locations. This makes them comments and they will be ignored. Save the file and exit.
Rerun setup.exe and it should work. It did for me.
