So here is my problem, I have built a program in the easy C application, but when i try to transfer the program over to the bot thru a usb-to-serial cable, the computer doesn't recognize the bot controller. I have tried pressing the program button on the cable but that simply makes the program status light blink green, when it is supposed to turn solid orange.
If anyone one knows what we are doing wrong or has been in this situation before, please give me any advice that you have.

Do you have the correct year selected in EasyC for the type of control panel you are using, and is the usb-to-serial cable plugged into the correct usb port on the computer end? These are the common mistakes that trip me up all the time.
Make sure you are connected to a port other than Com1 or Com2 as shown in the attachment.
If unknown is shown anywhere, one of the USB ports is not connected to the controller. Coms 1 and 2 are the serial ports and do not connect to the USB connector.
Hope this helps, it was an issue with our controllers.

Usually com 3 or higher is the USB-to-Serial Adapter.

Sounds like you have selected the wrong COM port. You need to find out what COM port has been assigned to that adapter.
Win XP: Control Panel>System>Hardware?(might be wrong)>Device Manager>Ports(COM and LPT)
OR
Vista: Control Panel>Device Manager>Ports(COM an LPT)
You should see one or more devices. Usually USB adapters have the word USB in their names. After the device name, in parenthesis, is the port number. Enter that in EasyC, and you should be good.
NOTE: If you plug the adapter into another USB port it will get a different port number.

Did you hit the PROG button on the bot? You need to press and hold that until the light turns orange (NOT on the cable... but on the RC itself.)

are you programming a vex or FRC and is it set up to that controller?
edit: also try controller verification in the download window and make sure it matches the controller you are programming
