I am running ubuntu on my laptop and am trying to get a loader program working with it, i have the compiler working but not the loader.
the loader runs under wine but when ever i try a hex file it says invalid hex file.
i have tried picloader but i have no idea how to use it with the usb to serial converter i am using.
Is there something that i should do to get it to work or am i better off using windows xp on a virtual machine?

Hey Jason, picloader is probably your best option. I also have a usb to serial converter, just go into the directory with the FRC_Defalut.hex in it and run:
picloader FRC_Default.hex /dev/ttyUSB0
(/dev/ttyUSB0 is your usb convertor)

By the way pictools is the newest version of picloader. You can get it here (http://www.adambots.com/index.php?title=AdamBots-Live:IfiPictools).

ok, i think it is that the driver is not loading right ill report back in a bit
Last year I used a program called "rigel" to download the code from my Linux laptop to the robot, which worked fine for me. It was recommended to me by someone at an event the year before, but I don't remember who.
Unfortunately, nothing in the source for rigel seems to point me towards the distribution location, but a bit of searching on Yahoo (http://search.yahoo.com) found http://lights2dx.net/source/other/rigel/. (That other search engine did not find anything.)
I'd been using version 0.13, but it seems it's now at version 1.00-rc1.

For the loader you can use a java clone of the IFI loader I created last year.

Get the latest version (should be at the bottom of the list) for whatever platform you need.
I have verified it to work with uploading the new 3.0+ compiler compiled code on this years controller
For the serial port issue you have to remove a certain program. What is happening (and this happens for all USB-Serial converters in ubuntu default) is that a program called brltty (braille tty terminal) takes control of the device and then disconnects it. What is why you can't use it. To fix the problem just sudo apt-get remove brltty and then plug the usb-serial converter back in and you should be set.
