Ooh! Ambiguous grey shapes from a CAD drawing! And you're using a kit motor! I know EXACTLY what you're making!

With all seriousness, shouldn't the globe be driving something?

Well, several people I showed it to on aim were able to guess what it was pretty quickly. Also, there will be a pulley on the globe motor eventually.

Awkward CAD angles = Modern art in FIRST.

Awkward CAD angles = Modern art in FIRST.

I have literally like 50 renders of awkward CAD angles I could post.... All from when I was learning CAD and rendering.

=p

Me too, except they're not in any standard program (I use Google Sketchup) and they're not of robots -- and I'm not a CAD guy. I'm a Chassis/Drivetrain guy. =p

Wow, did three people really have to post negative comments on this? If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all. No one requires you to reply to every little thing. I wish 973 the best of luck, and to the others that posted I'd suggest they either get back to work or possibly ask questions instead of posting negative comments. All I have to say is that I'm very thankful that none of the offending posters were ever students I mentored. I expect much more from FIRST participants, but maybe I'm too idealistic.

I think part of the responses is based on fact that one of the biggest pet peeves on CD is teasers that are abstract or just show parts that are hardly unique and offer nothing much more than confusion. It has been brought up before. And if you post things for responses you have to expect not everyone is going to like what you put up.
I do think people need to think about what they put up on the page.

I can see that point for most teasers; but I showed this to some people I know from other teams on aim beforehand, and they all were able to guess it.

I'll add some hints if it makes it a valid teaser; The gray thing on the right is a wheel (who would of thought the wheel like shape was a wheel.....)

Really have some negative Nancys here... You didn't have to open the thread; In fact, you wasted more time expressing your disapproval than just letting it be. What upsets me most is you aren't just random members of CD, you are all members I highly respect.

I think it'd be best to discourage others from posting inane comments about pictures that they feel are superfluous or inane, themselves. There's nothing to be gained by it, and in this case it's not like there haven't been equally vague teasers posted in the past that didn't get the same negative reaction.

Like I said before, if you don't have anything positive to say or a question to ask then (in my not so humble opinion) you shouldn't go out of your way to start a thread about the picture just to berate the original poster for their lack of "etiquette." PMs worded in a very respectful manner, or asking for more hints would be much more professional. Isn't that what we're supposed to try to promote? This isn't World of Warcraft where it's a relatively generally accepted practice to flame people from anonymous characters; this is FIRST and the real world here and we should be more courteous and respectful of others.

I don't know. Maybe it's easier to be on this high horse when I don't have a robot to build, but you should see this view!

I like (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/27063) how these (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/26568) similarly abstract (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/26407) teasers were (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/23158) never flamed (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/20203) at all. If they weren't obscure angles or unoriginal parts, it wouldn't really be a "teaser" then. It'd be a normal photo. I mean, I could post a pic of 675's chassis, but then that's like saying "this is what we have" and not "this is a hint, have fun".

Exactly. I enjoy teasers that are of an important part of the robot, but are displayed in such a way that you really have to think about it and guess some crazy things.

The first one got some pretty sarcastic responses. The last three got no responses at all. So worse getting flamed or ignored?

Flamed.

Flamed.

But the point of putting up these teasers is to gain attention.
So when no one pays attention to it and has nothing to say about it then what was the point of putting it up?

Attention doesn't necessarily mean posts. I don't think that everyone who posts is fishing for compliments or questions. I agree that there are probably some things that shouldn't be posted just for posting's sake (like just an 8' long piece of PVC bought off the shelf at the hardware store), but teasers are supposed to be vague to begin with and this fits the bill better than a fair amount of pictures. I don't see why this one was bashed other than the fact that they're not a perennial powerhouse team.

I wish we could highlight this whole post, Bill.
Thank you for taking the time to make it.
You aren't on a high horse that I can see.

I also liked this teaser - I felt like I was looking up through the frame.
