Hey guys. Team 399 is making "Science and Technology Hero Cards" for famous scientists and engineers. These are baseball-like trading cards including figures like Albert Einstein, Steve Wozniak, and (of course) Dean Kamen. But, we would also like to recognize those mentors who have helped the FIRST teams by donating their time and their smarts. :D

If you're going and would like to honor one of your mentors with their very own trading cards, then email team399@gmail.com and we'll send you the form to fill out for 1-4 of your mentors (sorry about the limit, but we do have limited funds to do this). We'll have their cards along with a small pack of other scientists at the regional and will deliver them to your pit.

We hope you guys find this exciting!

Good luck with the rest of the six weeks and see you in LA.

Cool idea. I would suggest, since i think a lot of us from LA are not on CD as much as East Coast team, try getting the Woodie Flowers and Volunteer of the Year award winners.

LA Regional looks exciting, though quite a few teams that are local can not attend due to Hawaii being the next week:(

Once again the extremely helpful FIRST Aid Station, ran by 599, will be back. Please email me if you have any requests or comments about the station.

hope to see a lot of familiar and new teams this year.

Bumpin this thread.

Who else is excited?

Whats not to love, Los Angeles has crazy awesome teams from competitive robots to aggressively public relation teams to extremely veteran teams to rookies. I guess you can say the same with our major sports teams too....

GO LAKERS!!!

anyways, I am excited. Hopefully the social will be pretty cool.

Yes, I'm very excited! Somehow the timing worked out with my spring break so that I can actually go to the whole event (and six flags on the side...). I can't wait to see some of the awesome teams going, it's been a while since I've seen a lot of them!

Hopefully we can manage to fix our possessed robot's mysterious problems on thursday and to join the ranks of competative robots. (anyone know a good exorcist?)

294 will be showing up with a performance that's hopefully a little stronger than what we showed during quals in SD.

I'll be there, though not with my usual team. I'll be wearing the black and yellow of 1135 as they return to FRC after two or three seasons of only FTC, instead of my normal blue and yellow.

By the way, who is interested in having an unofficial CD get-together sometime Thursday?

I would be! =D

So few west coasters use CD though, it's kinda hard to keep up ;P

If San Diego was any indication of what this event will be like, I'm excited. Definitely going to be top notch teams here... Our robot definitely will be.. improved. I was glad with our three hurdles in the last qualifier, and hopefully we can increase that number.. Although it comes no where near those at the top! =D. Our Hybrid should be getting three lines more often now though ;)

Have you seen the BeachBots' shirts this year? I'd call them "midnight blue" rather than the traditional royal blue. Apparently, there was a foul-up by the shirt vendor. As you know, Team 980 is also black and yellow, so we'll be color-coordinated!

I think a west-coast CD tag-up would be great. Thursday lunch-time??

Thursday lunch sounds good to meet up. Say near the "food" place(s), or outside for those that brought their own.

I want to go, but I will probably not be able to leave the venue. Plus, its safer inside, USC and the Sports Arena are not in the best of neighborhoods. How about near the Robot FIRST Aid Station/Machine Shop? Its inside and not as congested. If its the same as last year, its a big open area near the entrance of the Arena.

EricH
12-03-2008, 17:26
I was thinking outside the pit area to encourage people to leave the robot "alone" for a little while. Maybe near where the FLL/VEX demo was last year. (Though the area near the Robot First Aid station could work too.)

Lunchtime get together sounds tiiight. But I vote for right outside the arena because after being in there all day it's nice to get outside and breathe some fresh air. Plus we could probably get in a game of frisbee or soccer!

I'm so stokeeed. It coincides with my spring break too so it'll be nice to not have to worry about making up a lot of work when I get back.

It might be best to wait till Thursday morning to see how the field and pit areas are laid out, then have a pit announcement made for time and location.

Oh, and remember to make and wear CD name tags or buttons (if you have time).

ill be there definitely. oh and is there like a template to make a CD name tag?Nope. There is an easy way to do that, though...I think. I'll check it in a minute and get back to you. [Edit] Printscreen (while you are facing one of your posts), open an image-processing program (Paint works), and paste. Crop out anything you don't want, move everything else around to suit yourself, add trim if you want to, print it out and stick it on some sort of pin/name badge.

There are two FIRST related groups that meet semi-regularly all year in LA. The Regional Comittee and SCRRF. Most of us are also on CD though many just lurk. Either group is always looking for new people to help with events.

-KeatonWell, I'm not sure where teams are staying this year, but I do know where an old Visitor's Guide (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/papers/1627) is located. I don't think the hotels have changed much, though the venue might have (not sure if '05 was Forum or Sports Arena).

1070 isn't staying at a hotel. We're all semi-local so we just gonna wake up early and drive downtown every day.

It's my first year in FIRST and I'm so excited for this regional! I competed with 1070 in a competition earlier this year (the Fall Classic? ... something like that) but I hear that was tiny in comparison. I've been looking forward to the LA Regional for months and the suspense is nearly killing me at this point. :)

Hi Everyone, I just wanted to let everyone know that we will have a team social on Friday evening from 6:00pm to 8:00 at the sports arena. Food will be provided and we will have the big inflatables like we did in 2001 for those of you who were around back then. I apologize for the delay in getting the information out as I needed to be sure all of the details were worked out in light of the changes at the Sports Arena. Hope to see you there. -Nancy Mc

Here are our scouting results from the Friday matches using the NDS scouting system (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=61036) that one of our members developed. Note that some of the data may be inaccurate due to our scouts getting tired throughout the day, but it is a very good representation of what the stats are for each robot.

Thank you for the pictures. Best of luck to all the teams.

We hope to use our arms and catapult tomorrow as well as have a hybrid mode.

Saturday morning, if there are any great programmers free we need you. We are trying to program our robot to accelerate/move forward, decelerate/move backwards, strafe to the left, strafe to the right For example, forward button one time = half speed forward (~8ft/sec), forward button once again = full speed forward (~16 ft/sec), backwards button hit twice would then put us at half speed, then stop. Strafe would be one button push to reach full speed.

How fast does the FIRST IR board response to a button push? Stop by our pits if you like to help. Team 2404 - TNT.

Does anyone have any pictures of the field and pit layout? No, but here's a quick word picture:

Pits: 4 groups of 10 pits, 5 back to back, with one single row of three on each side. All other teams are in a back row even with the loading dock. Inspection and practice field are next to the loading dock.

Field: standard, but the widths around the field are narrow on the sides. There are no bleachers below the side stairs on the lower level.

All told, we're in about two-thirds of the normal space.

Hey, I want to let scouts out ehre know that while we did absolutely horribly the first three matches, we have straightened out problems we had earlier and are wrking on getting a better hybrid mode working. If EricRobodox actually drives well (I don't know how he is doing personally) we can easily score 2-3 hurdles per match. I think that someone needs to come up with a weighted scouting system that weights the later matches more in the average because those are closer to tha actual capabilities of the robot in the elimination rounds.

Also, i'd like to bring up soemthing that I don't know if other teams are doing. I'm planning on putting together a practice field box of items that our robot needs to bring. This includes one allen wrench and box wrench of each size we use and pliers. Is there anythign else that would be a good general item to put in this type of box, and is this a good idea in the first place? Feedback, criticisms, and suggestions for this type of idea would be welcome.

The alliances were:

1. 330 1717 980
2. 1622 687 2486
3. 1197 1726 2102
4. 2637 1438 1702
5. 1160 399 842
6. 1515 599 238
7. 2659 294 702
8. 207 1538 589

Congratulations to 2659, 294, and 702. I can't believe that two of the best lap robots made it onto the same alliance and 294 was a steal.

Thanks to 1717 and 980 for the great run through the finals.

Congratulations to 399 for the chairman's award!

A big congratulations goes to 2659, Alemany HS. Denying to another alliance and then leading their own alliance, quite a feat for a rookie team.

Volunteering was pretty epic. Congratulations to all teams and a big thanks to Jim Beck for directing another great regional.

Agree on all 3 counts. I'm so proud of 2659 and how much they've grown in the past few months. LA was once again an amazing even, and I'm sad that it might be my last time going to it. (college etc..) Great job!

Congrats to the unstoppable D'Thunderbeach alliance!

Props to 2659-294-702 and 1515-599-238 for being our opponents during elims, too... all six of you played an incredible game, and 399 for winning Chairman's twice in a row in LA.

294 had a great time. We had originally been looking at the regional as extended hurdling practice. We never thought we'd make it to the finals again.

Staring down the field at 330 and 1717 sitting right next to each other was unnerving to say the least. And the 980 smilie made it all the more intense. We were just happy to finish up with a score that was more than half of their's.... :p

All in all, we're pretty happy that the Beach Bots will be joining us in Atlanta along with our San Diego alliance members 1717 and 968. Hopefully we can bring a strong West Coast showing to Nats.

Congrats to the Beachbots, all that practicing paid off. 599 wants to see you in Atlanta with us so GET THERE. 1515, you guys were cool, things didnt happen as expected, but oh well, we had fun all of our matches with you. Congrats to all the other teams I didnt mention, I am too tired to list them all, Im going to sleep after this post.

As a freshman in college having participated on the team last year, it was great to see the team win at LA (didn't actually see it in SD). It was a blast to feel all the excitement again.

Ditched class on friday (one of them my math class :yikes: ) to catch the early flight to be at the competition on friday and saturday. So much fun as always, it was well worth it.

Congrats to 2659 294 and 702. (especially 294...it was wonderful to see you again, we worked so closely together last year, and I was thrilled to see that we had teamed up in SD)

Thanks to our wonderful alliance members, 330 and 980. It was wonderful to work together.

More congratulations to 339 on the Chairman's Award

Also it was great to cheer with everyone (primarily 339 and 1515).

Can't wait for next years challenge!!!!

Congrats to all the teams that participated, especially the winners of the final round: 330, 1717, and 980!

I just wanted to thank everyone for making our team's first regional of 2008 absolutely amazing! We met so many great people from other teams and just had an absolute blast! We weren't entirely satisfied with our own robot's performance but we are going to make some adjustments at the Las Vegas regional and try again. Our team hopes to see some of you there (although I personally have a timing conflict and will not be able to attend).

I was seriously impressed by the spirit of all the teams and congrats 399 for winning the Chairmen's award!

Awesome regional, seemingly unstoppable number one alliance - I believe they scored over 100 points in every match they played. Should make for a good west coast showing in Atlanta.

Thanks to 1160 for choosing us in the eliminations, and for 842 (The girl side of their team!) for playing with us.

Congratulations to the repeat LA Regional Chairman's Award winner, Team 399. You totally energized the event, especially with your video. It was awesome at field level just in front of your very enthusiastic section.

330 and 1717 gave an impressive display of effective Trackball handling and maneuverability throughout the LA regional. 330's selection of 1717 pretty much "sealed the deal" for the regional win. 980's goal was to clear some track for them (which often meant trying to keep out of their way).

There was a great mix of teams at the LA Regional including some outstanding rookie teams. The schools for Rookie All-Star (2429, La Canada HS) and Rookie Inspiration (2404, John Muir HS) award winners are located about a mile of one another. I'm so proud of Team 2404 "TNT" for their perseverance throughout the season. There are even better things ahead for their program and their school.

Thanks to the volunteers and RD who stepped up to make the LA Regional a truly great event.

the refs tried to disable us, but they made a mistake and failed(how does this happen?)

Saturday was quite an intense day for Curtis Montano, the Head Ref. Never have I seen so many matches challenged. It was ridiculous, the challenge box must have been filled for 70 minutes straight. It would make everyone's life easier if teams really made an effort to play clean matches. If there were penalties, they were accidents on their driver's fault. People give the refs a hard time when they do not realize how hard their job is. At competitions, they easily have the hardest job, and the group at LA was definitely one of the finest group of referees I have come across.

I dunno about the "if anyone else won" statement, some of our members were really worried after looking at the stuff other teams had done!
MorTorq, Robodox, the Holy Cows, and others really had a lot of stuff to their name.

But thanks for the compliment! I'll be sure to pass it on. It's really great to hear that from you guys, and as AdamHeard said somewhere, you guys are going to be BIG.

I want to extend a quick congratulations to team 294 for making the finals again! It's been great to see you guys doing so well in recent years.

1717 is becoming a true FIRST powerhouse. While I haven't had the fortune to see them this year, I have no doubt that they will be a force to reckon with in Atlanta.

Meanwhile, 294 and 330 have met in the finals for 3 straight regionals. Seems like a fun rivalry is developing out on the beach.

Congratulations to all winners, and good luck in Atlanta.

An impressive display of hurdling was put on by both 330 and 1717. 980 played great defense clearing the way for 330 and 1717. The double hurdling is simply amazing. Put 968 in the mix and Socal will be well represented in Atlanta. If you want to model yourself after consistent teams who hit the mark each year, follow 330, 968, and 1717. If you do that, you will be in the mix every year.

We have come along way and are still learning: you must control the game piece!

Congratulations to the LA Regional Champions

Thanks also to teams 399 and 1515 in particular, for cheering for us and with us -- we really appreciated your support and enthusiasm.

Another congrats to the Chairman's, Engineering Inspiration, and Rookie Inspiration and All-Star winners!

Nica, great job. Every time I was on the field I saw Mark holding the 599 flag. I dont know how you did it either, thats a lot to keep track of. Especially I think he had like 4 or 5 flags one match we had.

Cait1070, its our pleasure to help you gals out. Hope you guys got your robot and controller packed in the crate nicely, and hope its in a better working order for LV. I didnt get to see it, but Van says your hand is insane, and Vicki on your team said their were 6 degrees of freedom. Insane.

Lets get back to me thanking teams.

1717, great machine, and hope to see you guys in Atlanta. That lift looks so nice, especially how it looks so elegant in all black.

294, you guys shocked me and sort of went the same route 599 did, an ok performance in SD then a big step up in LA. I was impressed. I really did feel the wave. lol. I like your moto, though I mess up on remembering it all.

980, congrats on the win. I have talked to Dave Brinza at both regionals from start to finish on all days. You guys have had a tough time too and I am glad to see you guys get a break.

207, woodie flowers win, congrats. Also crazy awsome autonomous mode.

4, glad to be right next to you when you scored. That was one of my favorite matches I got to be part of. Good luck for the rest of your season. If you guys need some help in Atlanta or need a part, let me know. I want to see you or hear from you guys that you hurdled now, not just placed a ball.

All teams, we are all winners, as corny as that sounds. Thanks for making my last regional a great one.

... Although I am a graduating senior, I will do my best to be back at the regional events in '09!...

Congratulations on your success in FIRST, I know that it is an outstanding program. Now as a graduate of high school, when you get settled into college life, start to volunteer at a local regional or come back to LA and volunteer. Mentor at a local high school near your college or try to start a new team if you can. We do not want to lose our FIRST program graduates and hope they come back not only to help with their old team, but to start new teams and help them to achieve the success of your program. Pass on your knowledge and lessons learned....!

The FIRST site has the volunteer application and I am sure that Jim Beck or other regionals would LOVE The help from people that know what is going on.

Again Congratulations on your success and I hope to see you as a volunteer or mentor in the years to come.

EricRobodox
05-04-2008, 00:19
eh, just to show a counter, well almost counter-argument. Go to college, use what you learned. And once you have been out of FIRST and have had some more experience, bring it back to a team. Volunteer, but about mentoring, I am going to wait until I graduate probably, or at least a year off. I dont want to be a college mentor on the team right after high school, it will be like I never left and it could prevent from more progressive experience both on my end and the team I am mentoring in.

Mentors are resources to a team and any resource that a team can afford to share or give up to another team in need, perhaps ought to.

EricRobodox
05-04-2008, 12:47
I agree with Oscar. I would always feel like I am a Robodox, but its not about pride in your team once you leave, at least to me, its about spreading FIRST and creating the best experience for those who are in the program or creating an experience for those to yet to be in the program.

But.... if you wish to stay with 1717, you can just come back and mentor 1717 once you graduate, or maybe from afar with certain aspects like CAD or sending certain designs during the early stages of planning.

Cascade

I think you are all right. Loyalty to your original team is tough to set aside. Not sure I could do it either. On the other hand, sharing what you have learned is an unselfish act, maybe the highest honor you can give to another person or team.
