first off what is the effect you are trying to achieve and why? What do you want your final product to look like? There are many ways to get the same effect. If this isn't working for you we can figure out another path to take.
i trying to create an outerspace scene, i wanted to use lens effect, glow, string, streak, ray, and ring mostly. thanks!!

why dont you try a sphere with self-illumination turn all the way up and then put a fall off in the opacity map parameters. If you are trying for a sun-glowyish thingy.
Another way to do glows, is to render out a completely white sphere with self-illumination turn all the way up in the place where you want the glow. render the sphere out as separate layer and take that layer in to Combustion and then blur the layer, change the color of the layer and viola! a glowy layer without your computer spending time rendering the glow frame by frame.
