In the manual, <R16> to be exact, it says that the robot may expand up to a total of 80 inches. Now does that mean that we have 80 inches from the center of the robot, the end of the robot, or do we basically have an 80 inch imaginary bubble around the robot?

80 inches maximum horizontal dimension - which is probably across your robot on a diagonal.

This is correct, however, if you were to get tipped and your robot was "stretched unlimitedly", you would get called for the 80". It happened last year :eek:

With these explainations:
As noted in Rule <R13>, Standard Bumpers (and other items such as the battery, etc.) are considered part of the Robot, and must comply with all applicable rules. Based on that, the Standard Bumpers are included when determining if a Robot is in compliance with Rule <R16>.
The rule states that the Robot may not have any two points more than 80 inches apart when measured horizontally. The parenthetical phrase is intended as a clarifying example, but it does not convey the same authority as the rule. It is recognized that a small set of configurations exist (with an equilateral triangle with 80 inch sides as the degenerate case) that are in compliance with the letter of the rule, but may violate the example. In all such cases the rule, and not the example, will be enforced.
