We purchased linear actuators and hadn't read the rules thoroughly enough. So if we take off the supplied motors and attach the motors provided in the KOP, is it legal?

I believe that is allowed assuming that the actuator requires no other electrical input.

One of the recent posts by the GDC in Q&A specifically allowed fabricated linear actuators. Specifically, this one (http://forums.usfirst.org/showthread.php?t=8307).

funny thing is, that was me. I hadn't checked if I ever got a reply. But does it mean that a purchased actuator, running off a KOP motor is not allowed, since the team did not assemble the actual actuator?

Also, consider this a lesson learned: read the rules thoroughly before buying parts. Especially if you have to build your own actuator.
