Zomg amazing... I love how you don't have to stop to hurdle.
That looks really great you guys. It definitely proved a lot of my team members wrong about not being able to use a sort of catapult. It's also great you have 2 weeks left to debug/practice/add stuff on, etc.
No placing it on the overpass at the end of the match though I see?

It looks like you could almost be at the driver's station wall and still make a hurdle, how far can you be and still clear the overpass? This is one amazing bot, is the swerve a V-6 like last year or a V-4? Very effective ball picking mechanism as well, I think this is a game built for 118. Great job guys and all I can say is hope I get to see it in person at the Championships.

Looks like you've really done your work this year guys, I'll see you guys at nationals and definitely plan to check that thing out.
Justin looks like you may have out done Anthony this year ...maybe. Good luck this year, hope to see you on Einstein :p

Mike C.At the very beginning of the clip, there is a picture of their motor bay. There is a minimum of four and max of SEVEN or EIGHT motors in there! (I'm leaning towards it being six--four CIMs, and two FPs.)
I what to know about the victors, How do they snap into place?

And crab with turreted shooter the year before that, and crab with turreted double grabber arm the year before that. Thats as far back as I remember :p
Whoever said that hurdling capability wouldn't be too important just got proved wrong. I can see that bot hurdling at least ten times in a match. Also…

Profane exclaimations of amazement are certainly due...
How do they do it?
Is it just me or is that the NASA International Space Station Assembly Building? where components are assembled and tested before sending them to the VAB?
Awesome cienematography! Wow that robot must keep the operator AND the driver busy with so many DOF!
I can't tell exaclty, what are you using for energy storage? Elastic cords of some kind it looks like?
Cool!

I reiterate.
Whoever said that hurdling capability wouldn't be too important just got proved wrong. I can see that bot hurdling at least ten times in a match. Also…
I don't know about that; 10 hurdles is one every 12 seconds not counting hybrid. That's a lot of hurdles in a small amount of time. Now factor in the fact that there will be up to 5 other robots and 3 other trackballs on the field; and those balls will be rolling, bouncing etc. 10 Hurdles just seems to high for any one team...maybe an entire alliance.
That being said, I am in no way saying that the Robonauts have built a sub-par robot. On the contrary, it is one of the best fastest hurdlers I have seen so far along with 121's bot. So... Congrats to the Robonauts on having their robot done so early, and having built an absolutely amazing one. I for one am very impressed.

VERY impressive! :)
WOW
That is one of the most beautiful robots I have seen in all of my years of FIRST, it is an amazing piece of machienery.
Couple quick questions, how fast does it go, why shooting, and where can I buy one?
How long does it take to wind that elastic back? That has to be a krzy amount of torque!

how do you get the ball off the overpass?
My guess would be that their ball collector arms are just tall enough or have the ability to reach up for this very purpose to knock the ball off in Hybrid mode. I would also guess that they are able to dial in the amount of throw by adjusting the wind-up on the winch for their double spring-loaded launcher. With some practice and possibly automation I'll bet even money that they can line up a soft shot for landing on the over-head rack for the bonus points during end-game. This robot is every thing that I would have expected from the Robonauts, except the launcher. My team was guessing an elevator lift on the turret / crab base / V6:cool:
Unfortunately, Dave is right - they will have to completely redesign their entire robot because they left out the flag holder:rolleyes:
Job well done and looking forward to Lone Star

thats... going to be a tad hard to beat...
Snap in Victors, V6 with belts , intense launching system. I would not except any less of the Robonauts. Year after year, the Robonauts push the game to the limits. They also do a fantastic job building the Houston community and their school district.
Look forward to seeing the robot at LSR. http://txfirst.org (http://txfirst.org)

Fantastic, and well engineered. Should be great to see you out on the field!
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe they did crab and turret last year.
yup, they did
Incredible job so far...
Truth be told... I'm somewhat fearful :o
What launches the ball forward?
I understand the pulling back and closing with pneumatics...
And I see the belt being pulled back, but what's the retarding force to that motion? is it a pneumatic firing it out? or is that an elastic launch...
Edit: Are those gas shocks by any chance?
Edit2: never mind... i see the latex tubing
yup, they did

The building you are thinking of is at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The Robonauts are in Houston.
This is on sick robot. Very little defense is allowed to be played this year, so I can see 118 going through LSR unscathed and unstoppable. (No offense to my other friends in texas). This will be a very good year for the crab drive, I was actually thinking the other day about how experienced 118 is at their drivetrain.

i cant wait to se this thing in action. i had a similar design idea at the begining of the year, but my team just thought i was crazy! looks like you guys pulled it off perfectly, reaching the high DPS niche you always do! expect me to come by and ask you guys all sortsa questions at LSR (i'll be the one in the purple)

So would the ability to deprive such a bot of their "food" via effective opponent trackball herding....

Words cannot describe what is going through my mind right now. It's just so amazing, for a lack of a better word. Great job!
Hmm, looks like you have everything our team thought would be key to this game, except for 2 functions but hey that's why you're on an alliance.
Very nice design, but you're missing one important thing: Your robot is still that ugly metallic aluminum silver.
Where's the color? :ahh:

I agree, depending on where that ball hits robots will be falling. But on the plus side you can have really cool quotes like "Our tackballs will blot out the sun!!!" Very cool 118, looking forward to the championship.

We resemble that remark. We bought silver Cordura so our bumpers would match the rest of the robot.

Actually, if 118 is operating as they have in years past, that robot you see in the video won't see any color. That's their practice bot. Their real one is being made, with color, now. ;)

I think I'll have my share of stating the obvious. . .
Excellent robot - obviously a force to be reckoned with - playing defense on you guys would be interesting (that's a major understatement).

05-02-2008, 03:49
i am almost positive that that has more than 4 motors
because at the 20sec mark, you can see that there is 4 cims at the corners of the tranny, and therefore those additional tensioners on the top and bottom of the motor pic must hold FP motors.
at nationals i heard them talking about a CVT tranny
i hope this is the case
cus that would be amazing. :ahh:
BTW, your robot is incredible.
Crab + turret + catapult + grabber. That's pretty much the most intimidating combination I can think of. Except for also putting the turret on a lift. But maybe they've done that too, and they just won't show us until competition. ;)
Okay, the crab and turret is freaking me out. You guys are gonna be amazing this year, consider me a fanboy. I'd like to seem some pics of the control board for that thing.
you have an amazing bot
good luck in competition
-post more pics
Hmmm is there a mode that auto controls the turret to stay in the same orientation relative to the field? Looks like it :)

could not say it any better
Wow, all powered by surgical tubing is it? Im assuming you made some sort of transmission on the winch to allow free spin when you release but how do you keep it from back driving the motor once its "charged"?
Hmmm, I doubt that the robonauts are going to rely solely on another robot knocking down the ball for them. I think 118 probably still has a few surprises in store for us.
Wow, all powered by surgical tubing is it? Im assuming you made some sort of transmission on the winch to allow free spin when you release but how do you keep it from back driving the motor once its "charged"?
That piston you can see in the transmission is pushing some sort of dog-like device into a disk/gear/etc to lock the transmission.
So then it has 3 gears? Drive, lock and free? How can you do that with 1 piston?
It may have two pistons in the transmission not just one.
From what I could see in the video it looked like there was one big (1.5") piston. I could be wrong...
Doug Leppard
06-02-2008, 15:13
great job
roboticWanderor
06-02-2008, 21:34
i think that they use that piston next to the motor there to disengage some gear or dog of some kind that allows thier winch shaft to spin free. then the dog reingages to allow them to winch down the catapult again. im not shure, i will have to ask at LSR
I agree, so then my question is, how do they "lock" the gears from moving, or do they hold it down by continuing to run the motor at a low speed. This would explain the fan on top to cool it down from all the heat generated by doing this. Am I right or do you think they are doing something else?
How long does the battery last on that thing, eh?
roboticWanderor
09-02-2008, 20:04
it would seem, since the winch only spins one direction that a ratchet type mechanism on the motor side of the release gear/dog would keep the system from back driving.
EDIT: after examining the video for like 10 minutes i can see the entire thing, the motor has a ratchet, the pneumatic engages and disengages a crown gear that transfers power between the motor and the winch shaft. done!

10-02-2008, 20:59
how do you get the ball down or r u relying on other robots.
Looks like another good robot from 118. I can't wait to see it in competition. Good luck to you guys this year.
