Copper tubing is frightfully weak - Aren't you afraid that chance collisons with other robots, with walls or with a big honkin ball will turn a gripper made of copper into scrap?

Yes, but it is only a prototype after all. What do you think you'll make the real one out of?
Actually, We are considering using the copper tubing as the material for the gripper. Once the joints are all soldered and the frame is assembled, it actually is very rigid. Also, we are considering getting it chrome dipped or powder coated for additional strenghth.
