View Full Version : How Fast is your Robot?

Just curious as to what speeds teams plan on running this year. We'll be somewhere between 7.5 and 10 fps - depending on what drive sprocket we use. As of right now we've got it at 9 fps but havent really had a chance to test drive the robot yet.

we have the 2 speed andymark supershifter, so figure from there

Right now we are getting up to 15 fps in the distance of the arena, but in an open stretch, we can get up to around 23 fps. We are just using a 6 to 1 gear ratio straight off the 2.5" CIM Motors.

Our theoretical top speed is about 11fps but our actual speed is about 10 fps

Lol in our last week of drive practice I think I may have had it up to 10 fps like one or twice. At that speed the ball seems to fall right out during any turns and we run out of carpet way to fast.

10fps-12fps. Don't wanna go overkill.

Ours is right at 10fps and very easy to control.

We had ours set at 13.5'/s and it was still accelerating after traveling 3/4 length of the field. So we slowed it down to 10.5'/s. Anything more is overkill.

We are figuring ours goes about 9 fps, in high gear.

Originally 18 fps, but I decided that was a little ridiculous and geared it down to around 15. (freeload. it'll probably drive around 12-13.)

12.5 I believe was our number. It's surprisingly very fast and easy to control. A good medium I think.

we have 12 as are high i believe it accelerates very nicely and is not to hard to control (from the little testing we did)

way to make a wrong statement popo, its currently geared to 13fps free speed probably putting us around 11.5-12 actual. but from the bit i drove it it seems pretty controllable.

We're at 16FPS.
Yes it is controllable, very, and surprisingly.
Yes it does reach the speed in a pretty decent time, so it isn't such a waste.

But we did it because it was fun : )

Our actual top speed is near 20, but we'll never really reach that, unless we're on an empty straightaway. It's extremely light. Gotta love 6061 Aluminum.

A sincere questions for the speedsters.

Do you think that it will be possible for you to go full speed when there are 5 other robots on the field along with 4 balls? How often do you think you will be able to go that speed?

As a I side note, how fast can you make the turns?

I guess it comes down to one underlying question that we all will find out at the first competition. How fast can we all go and still maneuver in a safe fashion without ramming other robots? As we all know, light taps are okay ;)

edited by Sunshine: fat fingers had me punch a 6 instead of a 4 on original post ...... sorry

That will be quite crowded...but those extra two balls probably won't actually be on the field :)

We'll probably reach it few times. Heck, we did it because of our resources. Fun, no? ; ) Our budget was kept short and low, and for reasons we have and will not share.

We would concentrate on a good balance between acceleration and top speed. Again, we'll find out.

We've made our robot extremely small, light, and fast. So we'll see. And to our turns, let's just say we're very satisfied :) . Let's just say we're a tertiary, if you know what I mean.

I just hope we can have a break away just for the heck of it.

...And you mean 4 balls, not 6.

That's what low gear is for ;).

As a I side note, how fast can you make the turns? Pretty fast. If we hit the turn at full speed, we can drift around it and carry most of our speed through it. Unfortunately, it is kind of hard to reliably do the drift... slow down too soon and you hit the divider, too late and you overshoot. Just right, however, and it is a really fast way to advance around the field.

Our max is about 36fps or 25mph

We've got three speeds for the first time this year. 5, 15, and 20 fps :)

i think ours tops out at 14fps, which is plenty fast:cool:

We have AM Supershifters with our more robust encoders (which you've all seen (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/30093)) which generates a top speed (with the robot and everything on top) of 16ft/sec. I don't have exact specs, but thanks to our auto shifter (based on motor rpm) it accelerates pretty gosh darn quick.

Our robot has all of it's heavy stuff mounted on the left side, so we can take a four foot radius (left) turn at about 10ft/sec.

If the balls get in the way, we'll just put them back on the rack!

Is that a one speed? Also, how long would that take to reach top speed... ? Im assuming quite a while. Then again, your robot could be crazy light.

In a straight line: about 26 fps.
Circling the playing field (unhindred by other robots) about 15 fps.

Whoa.... Finding that hard to believe it can even accelerate to that within the field.

What motors are driving? How much does it weigh?

Also, 973/294 are both at 6.7/17.

13fps but we may ramp it up after we get a few practice matches

On paper we are at 18fps. Roughly 110lb. robot with bumpers and the battery added on top of the 110lbs. On an open field we can turn 5-6 second laps consistantly.

Actually there are video's of our robot on our website, however you have to find them. Good Luck on your search and it is real ask around and don't ruin the game!:D

16.8 fps (measured) no-load... Extremely controllable holonomic drive, thanks to our magnetic compass mounted on the robot next to steel rack and pinion (for super-sensitivity...)

And it drives straight.

... Just kidding about the super-sensitivity part. The compass is good for 90 degree intervals.

We can do 8 ft/sec in low gear, used for hurdling and picking up the ball. And 16.5 ft/sec in high for chasing the ball and doing the lap once in possession.

However we have 6 motors on our drive train so we can get to top speed with VERY fast acceleration. ;)

14 fps (on paper) with car steering. I highly doubt anyone could possibly maintain a speed higher that 15fps for more than 1 or 2 seconds.

actually at suffield shakedown the speed actually allows you to get away from bots who decide to pester you.

we can get 12-14 fps on high gear, significantly less on low gear.
