I was just curious if any teams give the effort to actually give a name to their robots, and if so why did you name your robot that?

Our robot (team 2189) is still without a name!

Yeah Team 1592 has

At first we started out with a random guy name-Bob
Then we went to Molly because of froging molly
next it was on to Larry because one of our past mentors named Larry passed away.
Now it is Xena because we has to continue the girl guy pattern and we thought that we could stick up to the name having a tough robot and all.

While we have never voted on team names almost all of our robots have been given ad-hoc names which stick and end up being used on our website.

Means quadruplet in German, which is kind of the theme of things on our robot.

Ours is officially named "Marvin" as in the Paranoid Android, but we usually just call it the robot or the boot.

Our robot is named Occam VIII: Yottabott. We name every one of our robots Occam <number> starting with Occam 1 back in 2001. The name is in honor of William of Ockham and his Razor ('simplest solution is the best'). Then, our robots get a yearly surname; last year's surname was 'Deadline,' for example. The Yottabott surname is play on words that is only really funny to me (its pretty cheesy). Yotta happens to be the SI prefix for 1000^8 (10^24), and comes from the Greek word 'okto,' meaning eight. So, since it is our eighth robot, Yottabott seemed fitting.

To pick names, we usually just have a meeting where anyone can propose ideas and we have a vote for which one we like the most. Some names are nixed before going to vote for various reasons... 'Psychedelic Attack' is an example of one thrown out this year, due to drug-related connotations. This year, we also paired up team mottos with robot names and voted on them as a single unit. The runner up to Yottabott w/ the motto "Yotta brains, yotta brawn, notta yotta time' was The Razor (an occams razor reference) with the somewhat tounge-in-cheek motto "Raze the Bar" (I guess it is only funny if you are familiar with the 2004 game, but we thought it was humorous).

In conversation we usually don't use the surnames. We just use the numbers (which handily coincide with the year of the competition) and say something like 'Hey is 3 ready for a demo or should we get 6?"

We decided on the name Talon as a team. At first I thought it was sorta generic but after seeing all of the innovative and interesting things my team has managed to do with it, I am very proud of the name

Two years ago it was Wazoo (because we had balls comming out of our Wazoo)

Last year it was Randy, named after our long serving and dedicated team sponsor.

We still refer to these robots by their names.

Couple of ideas floating around for this years robot. None are final yet.

1618 has only named its robots since I joined the team last year, and even then it only really got underway late in the build period. The working title for last year's robot was "What Robot?", but the name was quickly changed to Uppercut at lunch on Thursday at Palmetto, for reasons painfully obvious to my chin.

The two robots the team built before my arrival are nameless; we usually refer to them as "the oh-five robot" (or what's left of it--not much) and "the oh-six robot" (which is still physically assembled, but hasn't been driven once in almost two years to my knowledge).

We have come up with a name, and it is ...

"Fetish": Two years ago at a pre-season scrimmage our teacher decided to call our robot fetish. So now we have decided to name our robot "Fetish", in honor of our teacher.

Ours is always named either the Kil-A-Byte or Kil-A-Bot. Haven't decided which this year.

Although, at the 2006 debut of our autonomous scripting system dubbed RALFF (robot autonomous language for first) many people had the misconception that our robot was, in fact, named Ralph since every autonomous period our team cheered for ralff. Really rocked my socks that our team was cheering for a few Kb of code... :]

We usually name our robot after someone associated with the American Revolution (loosely, anyway). If you get a team number like 1776, it's hard not to go with it.

The final vote hasn't happened yet this year, but it looks like the robot's going to be "Paul Rovere" (one if by lane divider, two if by side rail). Last year was Botsy Ross, and our rookie bot was Benjamin Franklinstein.

TechnoKats robots have always had an official name. Since I've been a part of the team, we've had KatsKlaw, Skyhook, Katapult (redubbed Katawheel after we replaced the ball shooter), and RackStar. So far as I know, nobody has yet suggested a name for our Overdrive robot.

You can see how good we are at naming by this list:

1995 - Unnamed
1996 - Hexorcist
1997 - Ring Wrangler
1998 - The Bobcat
1999 - The Bobcat
2000 - The Bobcat
2001 - The Bobcat 2001
2002 - The Bobcat 2002 (informally: The Mini-Fridge)
2003 - The Bobcat 2003
2004 - The Bobcat
2005 - The Bobcat
2006 - The Bobcat
2007 - The Ring Wrangler mk.XIII
2008 - Black Betty

As you can see, we have something of a 3-year cycle (it's actually aligned with our 3-year success cycle too...).

842 has named it's FIRST robots after people who have helped the team, yet are not the teachers, parents or others who directly receive a benefit from the team.

Our robots have been:
2003 Rosie: Named after a student who supported the team and raised funds, yet she was not a member. "I just think you guys are doing a great thing and I wanted to help."

2004 Marcos: An adult in the community who works at Intel and "adopted" us.

2005 Adam: The deceased son of a teacher at school who has donated so much time and support to the robot kids, especially the girls.

2006 Karen: Physicist, Ph.D., athlete, astronaut applicant, inventor and entrepreneur. She is the most upbeat person on the planet. She met us and volunteered to work with us. What a role model.

2007 Jerry: Karen's husband. Jerry is an architect and owns his own company. After watching his wife work with us, he became hooked. He is the most level headed, even tempered person on the planet.

2006 Virginia's DREAM: Virgina is one of those fantastic kids who strives to be graciously professional because it's the right thing to do. We are inspired by Virginia who works hard, contributes to the community, and excelled in high school. Virginia did not attend Carl Hayden. She was a student at another district school, North High School.
A week before she was to start at Arizona State University (full scholarship), she was taken from her family, placed in a holding cell with 30+ female prisoners for four days (one toilet, no hygiene supplies) She remained there until she "voluntarily" signed deportation papers. She did not talk to an attorney, her parents were not allowed to see her. Eighteen year old Virginia was taken to the Mexican border with only the money she had in her pocket and the clothes she was wearing and forced to cross the border into Mexico. She did not know anyone in Mexico. Her high school started a campaign called "Where's Virginia".
Virginia's story upset many of us, but there is nothing we can do. The students on our team decided that we would name our robot after her.
Some of the old timers in FIRST might remember the Amadou story a few years ago. (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46922)

MOE's robot is generally called MOE, but they all do have an official name, which has to have MOE in it. The names are nominated and voted upon by the team every year. This year we started with over 30 nominations, and everyone voted for their top three. The top three with the most votes were then voted upon again to get the final winner. It will be announced shortly, but here are the past names:

2000 - Big MOE (originally just MOE, but since it was the biggest we had ever built, it later got dubbed Big MOE)
2001 - Lil' MOE (smallest to date; it was built to go under the center bar for those of you who remember that game)
2002 - MOEhawk (it had two enormous wings to grab three goals at a time)
2003 - GeroniMOE
2004 - GizMOE
2005 - MOEbius
2006 - TerMOEnator
2007 - MOEzilla

BTW, for those who don't know, MOE stands for Miracle of Engineering

Just to add to Carol's post, brainstorming and voting on our robot’s name has always been part of our MOE spirit and team building. Since little kids always suggest names to us when we do community demos, the past few years, we’ve started asking for their input and even take chart paper to the demos and add them to our brainstorming list… they have great ideas and it’s a way to spark their interest in this year’s team and in someday joining a team themselves. MOE (Miracles of Engineering) was inspired by DuPont’s Miracles of Science slogan.

Chuck has been Chuck since the kids decided that Charminator, for our major sponsor back in '97, was insufficiently muscley. Since many of the kids were wearing Chuck Taylor All-Stars, they came up with the name 'Chuck' for the Charminator and it stuck.

In our early years, we also had semi-scientific add-ons to the Chuck name, such as Chuck-R-2 and Chuck-PI, but then we were not easily recognized the following year with a different variation. We decided to stick with just Chuck.

Team 166 kind of had a history of naming the robots "Tommy Hawk 1-5" every couple of years. Tommy Hawk being a play on words refering to the high school mascot, The Tomahawk.

We kind of grew out of that and haven't used it since 2004.

2005 - OTIS because of the style of our elevator.
2006 - Scorpio because of our shooter design.
2007 - Gemini because it was our first year building two robots.
2008 - Atlas because of the size of the trackball.

I really would have liked to continue the Zodiac theme with Aries because of our gripper design, but the team voted on Atlas for our 2008 'bot.

The names are only really used when refering to past years. Right now, and until we get to next year, the robot will be called "the robot". We start calling it by it's intended name when we build a new robot.

We're in a real toss-up between The Spicy Phoenix....or Cupcake.

Cupcake sounds really good.

I think its this, but I'm not really sure, that as long as we've been Built On Brains He has been called BOB. Every year it changes to old BOB and New BOB. This year was different though. We usually just keep last years BOB around until after the Championships or the next fall, but this year we had 2006 BOB until a week or two ago. Then it was old BOB (2007) and shooter BOB (2006). We usually don't start calling him BOB until he starts taking shape.

He really does have a personality. I remember in my senior year (2005) his drive train would always "jump" every time we turned him on. Then the next year when we started getting to the programing and driving time we where expecting him to "jump" again. It worried us the first couple of times when he didn't, but it's easier to work on him when you don't have to block him up off the ground for testing in the pits.

In 2002 our team had dubbed our robot "Maximus" taken from the film "Gladiator." It went perfectly with our roman image. From then until 2006 we had just called our robot Maximus or Max for short. Then we changed our image and have decided to call our robot MAC standing for the first letter our highschool, our machine shop and our main sponsor. Middlesex highschool, Ansun protective metals, and Cordis corp. MAC

Last year was M-Cat since the ramps made an "M" as they deployed.

This year will be dependant upon what weight we have spare for decorations, as without them niether name will make sense. They're based upon how we capture a ball. The 2 choices are Paws or Pounce, sticking with the robocat theme. The team hasn't voted though, and it might not even be either of those.

Our team names our robot when it's complete, so 'bot08 is nameless so far.

Our '05 tetra-hoisting bot was Sir Lifts-a-Lot.
In '06, The Regurgitator could collect balls off the floor and power them into the lower goals (from the same chute, naturally).
Last year El Chupacabra used a nasty-looking stainless steel claw to pick up and hang ringers on the rack.

In years past, we have always named our bot - (04) BOB, (05) Pedro, (06) Shorty, and (07) The BEEst, are the past 4 names. Yet despite that, we have always just been called the "Robobee" - this year, I think we are going to just go with that name and our Bee Hive (the pit) theme. Hopefully we will be able to compete with Buzz again this year. They can Buzz and we will be the Bee!

One of the really old bots is affectionately called Cranberry though:D I think its anodized so its a weird cherry color, that's why. too bad this year we're not running on tank drive, otherwise Robotank would be an awesome name. Our robot has been named Charles after Charles Darwin and his theory of evolution. Our team name gives tribute to his theory of life and the fittest. Except we strayed a little from that concept a little this year and named it the Mantis...after the retracting arms that look like a praying mantis.

Our robot's name this year is ZePHyr.

We always try to incorporate the PH (Purple Haze) into our names. This year we all contributed, discussed, and voted the name in our website forum. That way we got input from everyone who was interested and it helped prevent our teacher from choosing the name. The last couple of years' choices: Mary... we added PHender to go with it and then PHunky's Dilemma. (Mary PHender, yup.) But 2008 = ZePHyr. And that was before Kick Off. woohoo.

Bedford Express has named its robot each year. The past 3 years and this year we have named the robot after our coach Ellen Bacon.

2003-THOMAS (An acronym that no one remembers)
2004-The Yellow Dart
2005-Hurricane Bacon (or the Hurricane)
2006-The Ellenator
2007-Shake 'n' Bacon
2008-The Baconator

Also note that the robots with Bacon in their names have gone to the finals a combined 3 times while the one with Ellen saw only 1 quarterfinal. Because the robot is not a hamburger or in competition with hamburgers our research tells we should be OK using the Baconator as a robot name.

We named our robot this year Richie X because of the founder of our team Scott Richie. At the end of last year, he moved schools to become a vice-prinicpal at another high school and resigned from the team. Through his nine years at Cyber Blue, the team grew in both size and ability, and so this year our robot is in tribute to him. The X is because this is our tenth year and almost all of our former robots have had a roman numeral marking the year.

Our bot this year is called Oscar after a certain surprise that people will see when we knock balls off in hybrid mode.

Last year, we named it Overkill because we over-engineered everything on it (got several awards because of that however).

We've always named our robot Cornelius (#). This year, we did "Cornelius IV Again". Usually, we add 1 to the last # to get this one. However, because we won championships once and then became national finalists the following year using the name "Cornelius IV", we decided to use it again this year. Hopefully it brings us good luck =D

This year, our robot is named Lightning. We wanted something to reflect the fast-paced nature of this year's racing-themed game, and something that sounded cool.

Previous robot names and reasons:

07 bot: Dynamite. We had a whole cheer about how "the ÜberBots are Dynamite!"
06 bot: Chainey. There was so much chain in that robot. And it broke a lot.
05 bot: ChubbBot. Our main sponsor at the time was UTC Chubb.
04 bot: Marvin II. Named after the previous years' robot, Marvin, but then the second generation.
03 bot: Marvin. I don't really know how it got that name; I'd have to ask someone who was around then.

We're in between robot names currently...

At first we decided on Dread Pirate Robert ---- (I forgot the last part >.<) however we're contemplating changing it so somehow the word 'zip ties' can be used. The reason? Most of our robot is held together by zip ties!

Last year our robot was "Rosie the Riveted" named after the old '50s show: Rosie the Riveter. And also our robot was held by rivets last year.

Our robots' names have always had some relation to their appearance and/or function:

2005- The Scorpion
2006- Clyde (from the orange ghost in Pacman, because Pacman ate dots, and our bot picked up balls)
2007- Johnny 5- the two suction cups in front made it look like the robot Johnny 5 from Short Circuit
2008- The "Land Shark". The painting on the claws look like shark's teeth, but it's on land, so...although some wanted to call it the Flying Tiger, after the P-38 (?) Flying Tiger where we got the paint idea.

One of my FTC teams spent weeks struggling to get a problematic design to work. Finally, less than two weeks before our first event, they stripped the robot down to its components and started from scratch. The name of their new robot? "Plan B". I loved it.

"Captain Hook" has a big steel -- well, you know -- hook, and "Chopsticks" picks up rings using a gripping device that looks like -- any guesses? -- chopsticks. "Plan B" is funnier, though.

each year we(team 418) try and name our robots so that it correlates with the game or robot in some way, and so that is has a 'f' or "f" sound in it. we then replace that "f" wiht a "PH" standing for out team name: Purple Haze
2008: ZePHyr
2007: PHunky's Dillema
2006: Mary PHender
2005: RaPHael

We've been making a serious effort to make our robots resemble various animals. The names correspond to each theme.

2008 (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/img/48a/48a23cccacf798ed894b1a3715a74b91_l.jpg) - BallFrog

Simply putting eyes on our robots has given them tremendous personality, and made them more popular with our sponsors, community, and visitors to FIRST events. We have hundreds of pictures of little kids petting our robots. Those are good pictures to have for the Chairmen's Award... :)

We always come up with a name for our bot, usually having something to do with the bot itself. In 2004 when the robot was practically held together with zip-ties we picked up the name Zippy. In 2005 when a victor shorted and started sparking on just about our fist time testing the completed bot we named it Sparky. 06 because we used oh so many zip-ties again and our bot was quite box shaped we went with Zippy-Cubed or Z3 for short. Last year we considered it basically a miracle that the bot both got done on time and also managed to be underweight so we went with Lucky. This year when we managed to finish the robots design we already started making jokes about what to name the bot, using a 16-pound hammer to hit a ball over the overpass was quite distinct, and because we just love trying to dance we named this years bot Hammertime.

OK, I'll help with the revival.

This year I proposed that our robot be named Hillary. I was hoping for some sort of quizzical response about why a robot should be named after a Secretary of State. I then had to explain about Sir Edmund Hillary as one of the most famous climbers and one of the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Ho hum - history - yeah, well, Sir Edmund ain't such a bad name. I should have gone really abstruse and mentioned Tenzing Norgay.

Our robot is named Ragnarok! We named it for our climber, which looks a bit sinister. Ragnarok (in Norse mythology) is a series of future events, including a great battle which results in the death of a number of major figures , the occurrence of various natural disasters, and the subsequent submersion of the world in water (we are hoping for a water game!) It is also a world in Halo 4. See more at http://www.team708.org/current-robot.html .

"Tyrannosaucer Rex" is the name of 225's robot this year. Somebody thought the robot looked like a tyrannosaurus rex, and the name stuck. We had some down time near the end of the build season and at our first competition, so some of the students decorated the robot with markers, contact cement, and foam to match its name.

From the FRC Manual:

4.1.13 ROBOT Name

R 4.1.13.1

Each registered FRC team must provide their ROBOT with a title, pseudonym, label, or nom de plume.

If this task proves challenging as a 30 point climb, it is suggested that each TEAM, upon the Bag and Tag deadline, go outside their build site and name their ROBOT after the first thing that they see in the natural world.
For example: Falling Rain, Foot of Snow, Half Moon, or Spraying Skunk, are considered acceptable.

Naming the ROBOT after your TEAM and the number of years that you have been in FIRST is considered to exhibit a level of creativity that is non-commensurate with the number of years that your team has been competing and will be penalized by the Master of Ceremony or Game Announcer by labeling your ROBOT with a fresh tag.

This is your creation and you owe it a personality.

Team 3753's robot is named Charizard, for 2 reasons:

Our robots' names have always had some relation to their appearance and/or function:

2005- The Scorpion
2006- Clyde (from the orange ghost in Pacman, because Pacman ate dots, and our bot picked up balls)
2007- Johnny 5- the two suction cups in front made it look like the robot Johnny 5 from Short Circuit
2008- The "Land Shark". The painting on the claws look like shark's teeth, but it's on land, so...although some wanted to call it the Flying Tiger, after the P-38 (?) Flying Tiger where we got the paint idea.

Graham is right about Team 1676's first four years. A secondary reason for naming the 2006 bot Clyde was to honor Walt "Clyde" Frazier of the New York Knicks, since that robot shot basketballs (Aim High). The naming meeting usually happens after build week 5, because by then everybody on the team can see the shape of the bot.
2009 - Apollo, in keeping with the Lunacy theme. That was also the first year we built a practice robot. We named the practice robot Artemis (Apollo's twin).
2010 - Weeble. You know - weebles wobble but they don't fall down. We perceived that the humps in Breakaway would induce rollovers, so we built the robot incredibly bottom-heavy. We have photos of the robot on its front bumper, tilted past vertical, and it still fell back down onto its wheels. What a crowd reaction! The practice robot was named Wobble.
2011 - Mantisaurus. It looked like a cross between a Praying Mantis and a dinosaur. The practice robot was Electric Funeral (you can guess how neat the wiring was on that one).
2012 - Iron Horse. The robot's profile looked like a horse, or a Knight chess piece. The practice robot was Sarah Jessica Parker (make your own connections).
2013 - This year's robot is Sidewinder, because it shoots from the side. The practice robot is Turtle, because it's short and compact, and the concept of a two-headed turtle is an inside joke on the team this year.

Of course all Pi-oneers also know that starting in 2006 the unofficial working name (prior to official naming) of any of our robots is Mabawlz. This year it was Mabawlz 8.0.

We have a long complex naming process for our robot involving nominations then an initial voting period then winnowing it down to two choices before we hold a final vote. It usually happens when we take the robot from our shop to a sponsor in week 5 to get it weighed precisely for the first time. We've broken the patter in the last few years but we try to name it something to do with red. For reference:

In general, we try to name it after some recognizable feature of the robot or just a cool name.

2007: Red Rover (cool name)
2008: Red Dragon (cool name)
2009: Red Hurricane (helix was kinda like a hurricane)
2010: The Commander (named after a mentor who was moving away nickname)
2011: Duck 'n Cover (robot looked like a duck)

2013: Red Raptor (back to the roots of red; robot has a tall arm)
