Our bot is complete, sans bumpers and side panels (which should be on today!). We just need to finish some of our magical autonomous modes and get the drivers practicing. I hope we get on an alliance with both of you guys this year. High score maybe? :)

I'll enjoy taking a break from classes to come attend yet another AZ regional. I get to watch this year, haven't had that leisure since 2003!

Also, high school Seniors, apply for the Steve Sanghi Scholarship! This scholarship is exclusive to seniors on teams attending the AZ regional and going into a technical field so there really isn't that many eligible applicants in the first place, let alone that apply. As last year's winner I can say it helps for schooling as well as feels great to get recognized! The scholarship application is only e-mailed to the registered adult team member (I think the one in TIMs?), so it's easy to miss and overlook.

Is anyone looking in to webcasting from Phoenix this year? I looked at the other streaming posts, but saw nothing about AZ. NASA didn't post the AZ link until the last minute in 2007. 1828 is willing to help out, but my only experience is the other delphi posts.

I'll be contacting the FIRST AZ rep if I don't hear back from anyone.

The reason we were webcast last year was our Emcee Jeff Seaton, he works for NASA and was able to make it happen.

Will we have a local feed on the big screen? There is lots of help out there from teams that have webcast the local feed, or another camera, at other regionals using ustream.tv. I can even supply the equipment, even an internet connection, if there is none available at the Coliseum.

With the planning committee's approval I'd like to pursue this. Please contact me. I'll send you a message.

Our team will be recording the AZ regional ourselves again as well, the footage for it will be going up sometime after the competition. I'm pretty sure we'll be distributing AZ Regional DVDs later this year as usual, but I won't confirm it just yet.

Only a week to go, this is going to be a great Regional!

Although I won't be visiting this year, I'll be thinking of Team 1164 and cheering them on remotely.

I was watching it earlier, and it wasn't choppy until the number of viewers jumped up to 40-50. (with some luck I should be able to see it in person on friday and saturday and won't have to watch the choppy webcast)

So it seems that the Arizona Regional webcast is up and running. I don't know about anyone else, but it's being pretty choppy, and while I'm glad that team 1828 is making the broadcast possible, is that going to be scrolling across the screen all day tomorrow and Saturday? It's a bit distracting.

Yeah, its choppy for me too. The field is also super bright, making some of the 'metal' bots appear blend in and look like ghosts. I suspect it is because the field is so bright and the background is so dark that the camera's sensors are trying to find a middle ground, but in doing that the field is getting over exposed.

Thanks for the comments. It's practice for us also, so you might see some strange things today. NO, we won't have the scroll up all the time. Yes, we were training on some gadgets earlier.

We adjusted the brightness and contrast. Let me know if it helps. Our internet connection isn't the best, we're adjusting the frame rate to see if it will help.

here's a hint for everyone watching the webcast, go menu-buffer time-increase to 5sec. It will improve the webcast alot.

Guys running the webcast, lower the video quality, hopefully that will increase the frame-rates. Its out right now...

The stream should work with any number of people, since it is streaming from ustream, not the stadium.

My web-based scouting system should be running in the stands tomorrow tracking scores, matches, and penalties, should be running. I could use some help entering data in. I'm a real person wearing a caution tape bow-tie (and team 498 button and/or black team shirt), probably in the camera area in the center of the seating.

Great seating/pit layout this year, by the way. Teams just need to learn that you do not own areas of the seating for yourselves...

Unfortunately teams aren't receiving their printed version of the match schedule until tomorrow, all we got was to see it on the video feed. I (and a number of other teams) took down the matches we were in, but I don't think anyone got the entire list.

For anyone who wants an exciting match watch match #1 tomorrow at 9:30 Arizona time. I remember that 39 is in it, one of the best teams here, so it should be a good opener for the regional.

And I'm glad to see team 125's robot arrive today. Can't wait to actually see it on the field tomorrow!

Kind of. The practice field is in its normal place next to the machine shop in the back loading area. The pits are on the South side of the stadium under the seating (the areas in the past that were large empty exhibition rooms that teams would cut through to get outside faster).

And the most unique mechanism goes to 2406, for the wind up ball-knocker-offer (just watch a match with them and you'll notice it quickly).

I didn't get to see alot of matches though and many teams didn't run today so this is a pretty poor gauge of what the field will actually look like tomorrow (notice especially I saw maybe 4 low numbered teams in any matches I watched). I'll post the results of our scouting information after tomorrow, as about 100 other teams will.

We're also very excited to have our robot in our possession even though we did not get it until 3 pm today :(

The good news:
We got the robot
We are close to being ready to compete on a full scale

The bad news:
We are not fully inspected
We definitely will be missing our first match tomorrow (Match #2)

We did our best in the 5 hours we had to get the robot as up and running as possible.

Hopefully tomorrow by lunch everyone will see us hurdle, finally.

By the way thanks to all the teams who have been helping us out with parts, information and everything else. Teams 842, 498 and 698 have been class acts and we thank you guys for everything you are doing for us.

It's been a very long journey, and its only thursday night....we're confident however that we can get through this and by tomorrow afternoon it will be like none of this ever happened.

I was in the pits and did not see it, but it was during hybrid mode when a robot went next to the line and started to spin. Every time part of the robot crossed the line, they received a 10 point penalty. I'm not sure how many they earned then (-90?) but it was considerable. There were a few more line infractions during teleoperated mode.

I'm sure someone who saw it will post a better description.

In total the alliance had 13 penalties in the match. I don't know what all of them were but the majority was from the incorrectly operating hybrid mode. I just remember being stunned to see "-130" on the screen in the penalty column.

Team #2449 had a BLAST at the AZ Regionals!!! We want to thank just about EVERYBODY THERE!

(I'd say everybody, but I'm still a little miffed at the folks in the parking ticket-windows ... sheesh, I thought parking was taken care of ... oh well ... I guess it's my fault for not jumping into the team van :( )

We were a little rusty in the beginning, but we ironed out the wrinkles and ended up with a pretty capable driver team, pit team, scouting team, strategy, and overall competition mindset by the time the dust settled. Winning the Rookie All Star Award and the Xerox Creativity Award was a real honor and we give many many thanks to the sponsors, the mentoring teams, our rookie-team mentors (ahem), and the enthusiastic students that make up the Heart of the Out of Orbit team.

We are very much looking forward to meeting up with a lot of you again in April in Atlanta, and/or next March in Phoenix!

Well... I can't say I didn't have fun, but this regional definitely was not up to par with last year in my eyes. Everything that could go wrong with our robot did go wrong. I don't think we had a single match where the robot worked like it should (the hybrid had some major problems... halfway through the regional it started acting up and we could locate the problem). Having 1/3 the teams as rookies really changed things up a bit as well. It may be good in the long run, but it sure made alliance selections interesting.

Overall, I'm a bit disappointed. The regional was nothing like we expected, the lack of fun revolving around our strange and continuous robot problems.

But that's just me. I know most members on our team had fun, as well as a majority of the crowd and field crew. And it was another successful, flawless regional thanks to the handful of incredible volunteers!

We had a great time, and even better, we had no mechanical or electrical failures (not to mention a great looking bot)! Wish I could say good things about programming...

I want videos of quarter final match 2-3... that indecisive trackball was probably the most intense fifteen seconds of at least this year for me.

Our team stayed after and helped take down the arena, a very nice way to end an otherwise depressing realization that there won't be any events for us until next season.

I had a great deal of fun both Thursday and Friday, but felt that alliance selection was a bit of a toss up and Saturday was very stressful as we struggled to fix electrical problems (we believe we have a loose connection, but can't find it--trouble shooting tips are welcome) and also attempted to support an alliance.

I was very impressed by the rookie teams and their turn out however I do have one gripe. If teams are going to "start" 30 rookie teams each year then they also need to support them. There were many examples of rookies having no idea how regional events worked or of basic robot design principle--things which I believe are the responsibility of the mentoring team. What made this especially obvious was a rookie team with absolutely no idea how alliance selections worked picking numbers at random. Perhaps the prestige of the chairman's award has led teams to simple start up teams and then leave them rather than forming a mutually beneficial relationship. (It looks much better to have started 30 teams than to have started and worked with 3.)

I believe it is the responsibility of every veteran that saw those clueless rookies and didn't step in and give them some help. I know last year that we were the clueless rookies at Wisconsin. Our alliance selections were terrible, but we managed to make the best of it and claw our way to the finals before falling to a great alliance. I know that I plan to go around to all the rookies that seed or may move up into the Top 8 this year at MN and make sure they know how things work.

All you can do know is learn from mistakes and work towards doing better in the future.

With regards to the electrical problem, I recommend you start a thread in the Electrical section with as much detail as you can give about the problem (I know you don't have access to your bot and that will make it difficult). I'm sure you'll get some great advice from Al S. and others about how to go about identifying your issue.

Hopefully you can get your issues resolved and have a great time at LA!

This was another great regional and in many ways improved over previous years, the number of rookie teams (and those that were good too) was outstanding and the new pit and field set up is so much better than the old one. Not to mention it's the most teams AZ has ever seen!

Thank you to team 207 for selecting us for your alliance, and congratulations on two well deserved awards! And another thank you to our other partner 2449, who is one impressive rookie team. I remember watching their robot at Duel in the Desert only a few weeks ago and I didn't realize until yesterday that this bot had been built by a rookie team. We made it to the quarterfinals with these two and it was one of the closest playoff rounds I've seen. Quart-Final 2-3 had the best ending ever, I would NEVER have believed I'd be screaming at a trackball that much and that the entire stadium would be doing so with me. I'm going to work on getting that match up ASAP.

Congratulations to 60, 39, and 1165 for a dominating playoff performance and a well earned Championship. 3 champs in a row for 60 now, and 2 for 39, this is becoming quite the streak!

And I have to say that of all our team's robots ever built, this is the one I'm most proud of. It went 4-4 and was ranked 28 out of 52 (and no where near the best performing robot we've made), and only made it to the quarter-finals. It was not the best robot at the competition in any game category, be it scoring, defense, or autonomous. It had no super-cool doohickey mechanisms and didn't provide any strange or spectacular gameplay to watch. It got penalties that sometimes lost matches. It won no awards at the competition, but for the first time since joining the team in 2004, I can truly say I don't care.

Because this is the first robot we've ever committed to and successfully finished early so that we'd actually get to drive and test time before Thursday at Regionals.
Because this is the first year we were inspected before 6 PM and without frantic filing or finishing touches, passing inspection at 11 AM.
Because this is the first time we've ever had 0 break downs, and the only thing repaired was re-stapling bumpers.
Because this is the first year our robot actually looked good, when we've had trouble turning out anything other than an aluminum-colored hulk in the past.

And because this is the first robot we've built that succeeded at everything we wanted it to. It was simple. It was low maintenance. It scored effectively. It had an autonomous that worked. Its look caught attention. And it was finished on schedule. All of our past robots, even those that were top 8 seeds and won technical awards for one feature or another, failed to achieve at least one goal.

To all the rookies at Arizona, any team that may be disappointed their robot isn't ranking highly or taking shiny hardware home, and even the teams with robots that are: figure out what the few (or only one even) simple things are you want to achieve with your robot, be it organizational, aesthetic, or functional, and ensure that you go all out to get those few goal(s) achieved. When you do you won't care if you leave the competition with two trophies and a medal in hand or a bottom seed with an 0-8 record, because you'll know you did everything you wanted to do with that robot. And I can tell you, it's the greatest feeling you can get from this competition.

I've gotta' re-read the rules regarding how much of the ball has to cross the plane, because if the whole ball has to cross, then it was clearly not enough to score. The alliance penalty somewhat negates the relevence of this call, but it was suspensefull nonetheless. Without that penalty, and if that final ball crossing counted, it would've been a tie! :(

From Section 7 of the Manual:

CROSSING: The act of a TRCKBALL or ROBOT passing through the plane defined by a line (i.e.
LANE MARKER or FINISH LINE) when it is projected vertically upwards. A TRACKBALL or
ROBOT shall have CROSSED a line when all parts of the object, while traveling in a counterclockwise
direction, have completely passed through the plane.

So the entire ball would have had to cross through the plane to score.

I agree, it did seem strange to watch some of the rookie teams pick. It looked random to me. You do have to ask your self one questions though, some of those rookie teams must have had some good mentoring to be in the finals.

We learned alot about our bot and from other bots concerning launching the trackball. We will be testing these ideas in LA and LV when we attend the regionals there. Hopefully by Atlanta we should have a very competitive bot.

Thanks to all the teams that helped us, like 1725 and 39. Also good job to all the PUHSD schools out there. We need to get the remaining three schools in the district involved so we can become possible the first district to have all its schools in FIRST.

Overall I thought the AZ regional was great. As much as I dread seeing 100 teams that we have to compete with in the near future AZ regional I look forward to it as well. It will mean that we will be fast approaching Dean's vision of all the H.S. in the US having a FIRST team. Where the quality may be lacking for a awhile, their hearts and minds will not and isn't that the point anyway. All of us can help raise the quality of the teams, that is what GP is all about. I want to thank 1726 again for the launching idea they shared. I know that there are a grip of teams out there using the concept! Overall I thought the AZ regional was great. As much as I dread seeing 100 teams that we have to compete with in the near future AZ regional I look forward to it as well. It will mean that we will be fast approaching Dean's vision of all the H.S. in the US having a FIRST team.

With the new regional set up there was lots of room left in the main arena floor. I think that with a bit of re-arrangement to fit some more teams in the new pit area and possibly opening a second large room for pits, the coliseum could easily house a super-regional with 2 fields.

...of course I'd also love to see a 2nd regional pop up in Northern or Southern Arizona instead, so single regional teams could choose between them and better financed ones would have another option for Regionals within easy driving distance.

I forgot to mention in my previous post as well, congratulations to 842 on their 4th straight Chairman's Award! Hearing their impressive list of accomplishments for the year, I think this may be their year to take home the grand prize at the Championships.

I have recorded a bunch of matches, but I'm having fun with conflicting video codecs on my computer and also haven't felt very good the last few days, so I haven't managed to do anything with it yet.

Sorry I don't have any recommendations for conversion software...that seems to be a magical subject which I know far too little about.

You can download recorded clips of all the elimination matches from the Ustream site. The quality isn't great, but it's better that than the live stream was. Also, audio somehow got mixed in from other people's clips.

****NOTE*****
After writing this I check out Ustream and it looks like only the broadcaster can download the video. I'll download and convert them and post the clips on our team website as soon as I get a chance.

The clips must be downloaded in *.flv format, but you should be able to convert it.

Also, as is discussed in other threads, the live feed often isolates single bots and it's hard to tell what's happening around the whole field if you're not there, but maybe this will help some teams until other video becomes available.

Did you make last year's DVD? That was awesome. Very easy to use and it's been a fantastic publicity tool for us.

They're free as usual and yes we made the ones last year (and before that, and before that...). Actually I think I have every match played in the Arizona Regional's history on DVD except for 2003 thanks to the mentor who's been recording them.

I don't know which teams returned the papers, I just know they went out during pit day and most teams returned them within that day. We had students going around to collect them as well so the odds are good we got one from your team.

Question for everyone that attended AZ: Did anyone else not talk to any judges?!

As you all know we were in our pits all day thurs until the robot showed up, and worked feverishly thursday night and friday to get everything up and running, but no judges came to talk to us. Until the very end of the day satruday i believe (some time before alliance selection). Anyone else have this problem?:confused:

We did have some come by on Saturday, I don't remember any on Thursday. There may or may not have been any on Friday.

Since the judges have limited time they may have chosen (for Friday at least) to only come by the pits of teams that had caught their attention as possibilities for the Friday awards.

Great news! I have the footage for all of the matches now, I will be uploading them during this week to SOAP and TBA. Playoffs will be first, then matches, and finally awards. There will be a few oddities in match footage so I'll warn you now; match 29 will be up twice because it had to be replayed on Saturday, there's at least one match where the final score was not displayed on screen (this can be found from TBA or FIRST instead though), and we are missing one of the semifinal matches for some reason (I think semi 2-1, have to check).

I took all of my video and photo footage from this season, and the AZ regionals and created a Tribute Video for Team 2449.

The Arizona Regional was a great time. We want to thank all the teams that helped us through our first regional. There was some amazing designs that impressed everyone. We are looking forward to next year. Unfortuantly as a rookie team we wont be going to Atlanta. We came close, but not close enough.

So the regional has long been over, but I have something that cannot go unsaid.
I would like to thank all teams for a great competition.
125 came in to the competition in a pinch and in need with a late robot and a lack of tools. Any team there that we asked for anything was very gracious in helping us out. I would like however to point out 3 teams that went above and beyond our call for help. Teams 498 698 and 842. Team 498 and 698 had boxes of spare parts and various essential robot items ready for us when we arrived... that is impressive and I cannot express how much 125 appreciated this. Team 842 being right across the aisle in the pits from us took us under their wing for the entire competition. From lunch everyday, to any tool in their pits, to help programing a compressor, these guys did not stop giving. Because of the efforts of these teams 125 was able to get on its feet after a late start and have the robot tuned and working for the finals. 842, you guys really are a class act and completely deserve the chairman's award.
Now, with one competition under our belt we will be better prepared and fully functional for Boston in a couple weeks.
Again, thank you to all teams at Arizona for a great competition and one of the best displays of the ideals of FIRST that I have seen in my time in the program.

It was very cool to see 125 come out and do well at the end, you guys would have most likely dominated most of your qualifing matches.

Awesome job to all the rookie teams, very impressive to see how many there were this year.

For those who have been watching, matches have been appearing on soap the past few days, so go watch them and show your friends!

Next year shall be great, hopefully az can organize some more events like dual in the desert, those are always great.

Well, everyone was watching over you. We were glad that you had not been picked by one of the teams for the finals. When our alliance got to pick you as the third team, I thought we had a champion alliance. 39 has one fantastic robot and are just about impossible to stop. They are a good group of kids with a killer robot. We meet them again in L.V.

Best of luck in Boston and hopefully we can all meet in Atlanta.

Please keep in mind I didn't get all of the teams unfortunately due to team issues that I needed to be a part of, but I did get a lot of pics.
