View Full Version : [FF]: 2008 Seaon Long Fantasy FIRST Discussion
This thread is for discussing all things affiliated with the 2008 Season Long Fantasy FIRST League. Standings will be posted here as well as rankings for individual teams. I'll even allow some trash talking (so long as you're willing to back it up or have lots of ketchup to force down all that crow).
Enjoy.
The first thing I want to discuss is the awards that will be given out at the end of the season. Besides the Championship trophy for the league winner there will be an award for the top seeded performer dedicated to our first Fantasy FIRST winner called the Elgin Clock. There will be an MVP award for the best performing team and a rookie of the year award.
Any other award suggestions?

Will the MVP and the rookie of the year awards go to the teams, or to a fantasy player? I also had a thought on Chairmans for Championship, will each player who has a team win a regional Chairmans keep that team for Championship just for Chairmans, or will it go to the player who picked them then for Championship?
I'll volunteer to help collect/check data for awards. I'd just collect data, though--the FIRST awards site can be helpful. :D (If I'm remembering, I might do some on-scene at L.A., but the odds of my remembering anything there are slim.)
All week 1 rosters are now locked.
Good luck guys!
LET'S GET READY TO RRRRRRUUUUUUMMMMMBBBLLLLEEEE!!!!

Right now, I'm feeling pretty good about the majority of my week 1 picks.

That's because you actually showed up to make picks.

Way to be snappy on the scores, there was some work put into that thing.
Left out the high score equation.

In the Midwest scores, you didn't give 1625 points for 2nd seed.

Fixed.

I thought I'd be helpful and do my own score. Its past midnight, so perhaps a recheck on my math is a good idea.
BAE 20+11-3 = 28
Nj 99+77+28 =204
MW 72+29-1=100
STL 80+64+4=148
ORE 120+9+6=135
Total 615 for Week 1.
How is everyone else doing?
I may as well...
BAE:10-4+0=6
MWR:51-4-8=39
Oregon: 39+15+2=56
New Jersey:25+26+28=79
STL: 64+4+35=103
total=283
All I can say is, I was surprised a little by BAE and MWR--I thought it would be the other way around!
And, of course, wait till next week...

I did okay with
Midwest: 63+40+47=150
BAE: 69+13+8=90
NJ: 25+26+0=50
St Louis:101+12+0=113
Oregon: 7-8-6= -7
Total: 396
Oregon was a little sad but oh well.
OY!
This is taking forever.
Could someone make me an excel spreadsheet of all the teams all the members picked for the season so I don't have to crawl up and down the leagues to find out?
Thanks.

You know EricH I might be able to do it some time this week. I'm on mid-semester break and don't really have to worry about school until saturday or sunday, which gives me a lot of free time.

I'm keeping all of the picks in one excel workbook, and right now I have BAE and Midwest done. It's been about 2 hours since I started and I'm hoping to get the first week done either tonight to tomorrow morning. I would like to get this weeks regional done by the end of the weekend. It might be some time next week when I finish all of the regionals.

I too am working and am about halfway through BAE and have a tier apiece for Midwest and Oregon.
Issues so far: Tier 5, BAE, 238 picked twice. Tier 6, Midwest, blakcheez has no first-round pick.

Here is Week One. (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/papers/2093) Besides what EricH has said is wrong is, Rohith Surampudi has no spot in Midwest or BAE, Oregon Tier 1-957 is picked twice, and 135 picked twice in St. Louis Tier 5. Missing picks - Tim Delles Tier 5 Round 3, wpdrummer New Jersey Tier 2, and Jonathan Norris St. Louis Tier 6.

I'll see about finishing up the one I'm working on later today. I've picked up some other oddities, but I haven't finished any drafts to confirm those.
EDIT: Jay and Robotcanuck are NOT in Oregon at all, as far as I can tell! Nowhere in the draft!

Wayne Doenges took over InfernoX14 spot.
Does he keep all of his picks?
Does he keep all of his picks?I would assume so, but it'll be a long battle...I don't think he had any Week 1 drafts.
I'll give Rohith Surampudi Greg Needel's old picks since he was supposed to be in Tier 2.
I'll give Rohith Surampudi Greg Needel's old picks since he was supposed to be in Tier 2.Fortunately, I haven't gotten to Tier 2, BAE, yet. (I'm going one draft at a time. Currently about 1/3-1/2 of the way through.)
More issues: FLR 6, 1126 twice and Doug G has no second pick; Arizona 2, 698 picked twice; two unresolved pool trades in VCU 1 and 4; unresolved pool trade Detroit 3. (I know there are more unresolved trades, but they haven't made it onto the sheet yet. I'll call them out when they show.)
All right, I'm done for the night...but I'm only about half done with the spreadsheet. I expect I'll have it done tomorrow night, or maybe Wednesday.
Currently, it's missing most of Midwest, all of Buckeye and anything after L.A., and a tier each from BAE, Kansas City, and Lonestar. That'll take a little while...
While I'm still in the spirit of delegation is there any chance I can have someone compile up all the total scores for everyone this week (and post it, of course) so I can focus on scoring the individual regionals?

I can't wait to see the scores for Detroit. I was looking at my picks and I think I just dominated it. My picks are 27, 1, and 1718.
1718 has a judges award and ranked 5th with a 7-3 record. They went 1-2 in the Quarter Finals.
1 is ranked 8th and had a 6-4 record. They went 2-3 in eliminations and made the semis and also won the Regional Engineering Inspiration Award.
And Finally 27 was ranked 2th with a record of 9-1, was a finalist with a 4-4 record and won the chairmans award.
It's really, really, really going to be hard to wait for them to come out.

You can always just do what he pros do, Eenie, Menie, Minie, Moe, oh just give me one form the randomizer.... But wait there is a great team left! I want to trade my third pick for (Insert team number)!!!!
Hey, Ed, how does a team in 4th-8th seed not get at least a QF? (1027, Chesapeake) After a check of the FIRST event site, match results, QF. Edit 2: And they don't have a 5-4 record... more like 7-3 after losing two in the quarters.
Actually, Jherbie, I prefer the "OOH LOOK!!! TEAM SO-AND-SO didn't get picked!!! I want!" after setting up a good alliance without the randomizer.

I actually went through the team lists for the events and made lists for Ed of the teams with more awards and obviously the teams I know are good. Ed's right about that. It's looking like Barry Bonzack will be in the lead and thus have first pick, but others are catching up (Alex Cormier, hill, and myself are the ones I can think of off-hand). I've also run up against a lot of no-shows and uncaught double picks, so bear with me. I'll get most of the people out ASAP, then go deal with doubles for whoever's left--after I deal with the mess that is Week 2's regionals. (Half the league has a question mark for their score right now.) If anyone wants to help, drop me an email.
Oh, and Ed--I could really use Florida and Wisconsin right about now.

I missed those?
I'll try and get them up ASAP!
I was looking over the scores for what I've already done (now that they're cleaned up a bit--VCU was particularly nasty on the double picks) and adding in the Week 3 scores that I've done up till now.
Barry should start getting nervous--he's only leading by about 300 points, with at least 4 others hot on his tail. Then again, there's still the rest of Week 3 and all the rest for him to pull away again...
All pool trades have been added; some missing teams/double picks will still be found, but I think I've got most of them for now.
All I'll say for now is, I'll need to work hard for the next few days on this... I can get most of Week 3 and almost all of Week 4 done at this point with what I have.

uhg. Which is more important... studying for finals... or making a massively long championship pick list.... I want it on record I pick 1114
You and everybody else, Barry...
Oh and here's the Florida results.
And here are the Wisconsin standings!
Well, I'm almost done with Week 3. (One regional left, plus cleanup in three.) At this rate, I'm doubtful of my ability to finish single-handed by, say, Monday. I figure it'll take me about 23 hours to finish, plus another 2-3 hours to clean up the sheet on top of that.
Ways to help if you want to:
Clean out used teams from the randomized lists for the regionals, one per tier per regional. This makes it easier to substitute teams in for missing/double-picked teams. Probably about 15 minutes per randomized list.
Score a regional or two. Anything in Week 4 and beyond (and Brazil) is fair game; just let me know which one. (And send the results over for adding to the totals.:)) I find that one regional can take about an hour, not counting missing/double-picked team cleanup.
"Clean up" a regional or tier. I send you a finished regional, you go through the randomizer and put the first unclaimed team in "empty" slots. There's a lot more double picks out there than you might think--but they seem to be dying down in favor of "missing" teams.
A note on ranking----Barry shouldn't get too confident just yet. In Week 3, with 1 regional left to score, he's running in second and 3 people are either ahead of him or in easy striking distance. That's not going to hurt him too badly overall--but there are strong competitors out there. One or two lousy regionals (and he's had two already--which is why the others are so close) could drop him into second.

I would also like to know current standings, if you have time.
Way to step up and help guys....

Hey I have to score and administer a huge Fantasy Football league Excel spreadsheet by my lonesome each year - it's ok for others to feel the pain!

I pm-ed Eric but I can help with whatever needs to be done.
Just tell me what to do
As for who is close to Barry--That would happen to be Alex, hill, and myself. Tottanka, lukevanoort, and Travis are also doing well. One or two others are in the general area. (Note--some of these are Week 3 score info that hasn't been connected to the total yet.)
After Week 2, the top 5 were:
Barry 603
Luke 513
Tottanka 425
GeeForce 396
hill 395
hill--I'll PM you with a short list. The pick sheet I posted a few weeks ago is what I'm using.
Scores up from the Bayou.
Scores through Week 3:
Barry Bonzack 603 521 912 2036
lukevanoort 513 301 787 1601
Tottanka 425 269 867 1561
sumadin 508 326 683 1517
hill 395 332 756 1483
Jeremiah Johnson 216 746 421 1383
Alex Cormier 350 245 752 1347
EricH 283 180 876 1339
Kristian Calhoun 208 388 702 1298
Tim Delles 323 342 494 1159
Joe J. 339 345 423 1107
Travis Hoffman 352 304 360 1016
George1902 115 232 640 987
Jherbie53 239 171 550 960
GeeForce 396 225 316 937These are the top 15. The rest to follow when the full score set is ready...
Barry, let me know when you've got time and I'll get you the needed info.
UPDATE: I'm now about halfway through Week 4. This is a high-scoring week, with at least three people picking up over 200 points in one draft. I have five confirmed as having more than 500 points for the week, and there are still four regionals left to score. Stay tuned--I should have the standings post-Week 4 up sometime soon.

Looks like he's getting further ahead to me.
Looks like he's getting further ahead to me.Maybe ahead of most of the pack--but I know for a fact that at least one person was ahead of him in the Week 4 scores.

If he doesn't have an amazing repeat (and Barry completely collapses) we can hand Barry the Elgin Clock right now and put him on the clock.

I did really well in week 4, but I don't think well enough to catch up 600 points. Hopefully I can jump ahead of Eric and grab 2nd.

In my past experience it's not your first pick that wins you the championship. Sometimes it's the third pick.

Oops, I meant to say week 5 in my last post. Hopefully Barry did bad in week 5. According to my calculations, I got 1228 points in week five as a minimum. Hopefully that will do the trick:)
And it most definitely takes 3 good picks to win. I won last year because 2 of my 3 bots made it to Einstein and one of them was my 3rd pick.
Ed, could you do Boston next?
I have Boston right here.

I was gone all yesterday. Let me get done a couple of assignments (about 2 hours) and then I'll be good to help. Is there a list of regionals still not scored, or have all been completed? How can I help?
Its interesting that I am weakening, I put waaay more effort into the last half than the first half because I had more time of Christmas break

So far, I have about 5 to go. You up for NYC?
And yes, you are weakening. You missed two top picks that were free agents. (1625 and 39, to be exact.) Three or four people are currently beating you in the Week 5 scoring. Then again, I wouldn't exactly call 690 points with 4 regionals left in Week 5 weak...except that three people have over 900 and another has over 700.
Then again, Week 5 was/is a bloodbath, particularly GTR, which has the most abnormally low scores I've seen yet. Those who survive will do well. Those who don't... Well, we'll see later today when the final standings are released. There have been some changes to draft lists due to missing teams (and Barry wasn't immune). We shall see...

That makes some sense now. For the first couple of weeks I double checked my next regionals to make sure my picks were still at the regional... the last 3 weeks I was at regionals and mostly out of state and didn't have time.
After finishing Week 5, it looks like Barry is too far ahead to be caught. THe battle for second pick rages on, though, with three who are close enough to grab it if they have a good day at NYC.
Week 5 standings will not be posted, as there is only one event left. It is enough that three people had over 1000 points. (Barry was the last of those with 1194. I'll let you judge how good the other two are. I think the main reason Barry is in the lead is that those two had bad first-and-second week scores by comparison.)

Eric, what can I do for you?At this point, I'm just about done. Though a list of the unpicked teams in randomizer order for Tier 1, NYC would be nice to have--I know I'll need at least one due to a double pick. (And at the rate teams haven't been showing up, more is better.){EDIT} Better make that for each tier...some teams didn't show up.)
All right, Fantasy First participants, your scores (and draft order) are up. Barry already picked 1114, so hill is up.

Looks great Eric! Thanks everyone for doing this, it was a lot of fun.
Can i request that we show what tier the person was mainly in?
I think i was the top for tier 1 which was the hardest tier there too. :)

I think i was the top for tier 1 which was the hardest tier there too. :)The full sheet is in CD-Media. It has: Teams, tiers, scores by regional, scores by week, and grand total scores. The one thing it doesn't have is individual team scores. (And those are available in this thread from Ed's sheets.)
You were in Tier 1 all the time, but that wasn't the toughest. That would go to 2 or 3 when either Barry and hill or Barry and I were both in it.:yikes:

Thanks for doing the scores for each regional and then for each week. You guys rock for taking the time to do this for everyone.
Here are the championship rankings.
So now that we finished a complete season of FF what did you guys think?
So now that we finished a complete season of FF what did you guys think?Fun. But I hope Brandon finishes the FF area before next season!
(If he doesn't, I'm thinking start as soon as regionals are announced with scoring/who has which teams/etc. stuff, rather than wait until Week 5. Make life much easier on everyone.)

It was fun but I need to come up with a system so I don't have so many absentee owners. I think 75% of the people in the league simply signed up and were never heard from again.

I could tell kind of who they were by how well they did. Maybe: sign up. Confirm participation (thread or PM) shortly before closing the league to sign ups. (This would also be the drop deadline.)
I saw maybe up to 10 active members this year. That would be about one tier for anything other than Brazil and Israel.
I'm thinking ahead to next year. We'll see how my schedule goes...
Great Job Eric and Koko Ed for running this
A few suggestions for next year:
-If we still have the tiers, make them fully randomized. I imagine that some people were stuck in more "competitive" tiers, with a higher percentage of participants actually making picks.
-We need some kind of reminder that a draft is happening, beyond posts to the FF forum. Something like a counter on the CD portal, saying "2 weeks until Week 1 Drafts start"
-If we get a new, automated system, make it integrated with TBA. It would be really helpful if we could easily link team lists to records, videos, etc, from previous years.
Agreed on the signup, then confirm, idea.

Agreed on the signup, then confirm, idea.True on the tiers. I often got good picks because I was the only one picking. Might be interesting to try a mass randomization. Though if the "drop rate" is consistent, there won't be a need for tiers.
Reminders... I don't know.
Automated system, you'll need to talk to Brandon for anything connected to that. I would like to see automatic scoring for that. (I'll let you figure out why.;))
