Haven't seen a thread for the San Diego Regional, so I thought I would start one. EagleCorps Robotics Team 1158 from Colorado is very excited to be attending. We are looking forward to the excellent competition that this regional will offer. Good luck to all!!!!

Gonna be weird enjoying a regional with no responsibilities.

610 will be making its first trip to the west coast since we went to Sacromento in 2005, the guys are really excited for the west coast trip. The team will be bringing its catapult down from Canada, sadly I'll be staying up here in the snow studying for exams at university.

I remember those great matches, we sure did a number on defense against the poofs (in a game where defense was hard to play). 2005 for our team was a disappointing year on the field for our team, and since then have rebuilt the team a bit and have been far more competitive in the last two years.

The kids are bringing a good catapult bot down this year (think 103 in NJ, or kinda like 16 in Chicago (without the swerve)), it looks to be a successful design for this years game so far, hopefully we are just as competitive next weekend. Good luck to everyone, hopefully someone pulls together a webcast so that I can watch the team from Canada.

Unfortunately, the Team Social for the San Diego Regional had to be cancled after a major sponsor backed out due to budget restrictions.

Sorry...

Actually the practice matches were pretty good. Team 330 had one heck of an awesome robot. It was fast, sturdy, and hurdled like a charm. I didn;t catch a team number, but one team literally used a hammer to boot the trackballs over and they were 100% consistent!

They have a very nice design, as do many bots here, but I didn't get a chance to see them run around much. They were quite busy making some adjustments to their manipulator and lift.

Can't wait to see it in action tomorrow.

From the few matches I watched, 330 and 987 impressed me.

Is anyone else distressed that San Diego is not being webcasted and they are stuck at work during matches like this? I would have loved to seen this match. I'm packing up all our students and driving down to San Diego Saturday morning. I hope to see even higher scores!

Good luck to all the teams.

Same, I was paying too much attention coaching our drivers that I didn't see 330s 6 hurdles (great job btw, another amazing robot)I am trying to pick my jaw up off the floor. SIX hurdles??? I really want that video now! (6 rivals 1114 at their best. At MWR, they had a match with 6 and one with 8.)

(BTW, I am now on team 1135, competing in L.A. only.)

We just watched the match 45 video during our scouting meeting tonight - epic!! Unforunately I didn't bring a firewire cable to download somewhere. I'm sure video will be up on soap in the near future.

987 had another great match at the end tonight, match 58 I think, not so high scoring as it was a bunch of scoring in the last 30 seconds.

We had a fun match with 330 in the morning, doing the double hurdle... This has been a cool regional. Don't ask about match 29 - what a boondoggle - but I must say the head referee has done a great job of being calm and listening to teams and wanting to get the call right.

Looking forward to Saturday.

Even though I'm a long distance/allumni/can't get rid of mentor on 294, I was there for SD.

When I saw who the alliances were, I knew it would make for an epic finale. However, as riercely competitive as I am, It made me sad knowing no matter what teams I love would lose with great robots.

I never thought after beating teams such as 330 and 987, and doing at on such an awesome alliance, I would be saddened.

Overall, most exciting regional I have been involved at in a long time. I really hope 330 and 987 get some hardware at LA/Vegas as they have such amazing machines.

Man, San Diego was an awesome regional. Congrats on the High Rollers and Beach Bots for putting up an EPIC final round (and high rollers, great match 45, that was lots of fun too), congrats 1717 and RAWC, semi-finals were great and you guys were amazing in the finals, great win. Overall, San Diego really impressed me in how smoothly the event was run and the epicness of the final rounds.

I wouldn't suppose someone could post a video of this match? It is definitely something I want to see.

I have videos of everything, from the official feed. (I was surprised there were only 2 or 3 people recording it.) I will get it uploaded as soon as I can.

Note though that I do not have a lot of time available, so if there's anyone out there who could help me with editing, that would be much appreciated (please email or PM me). The idea is that I would send you however much raw video you could handle, and you would edit it down to just the matches. Without help, it'll get done; with help, it'll get done faster.

First of all, we (Team 1717, D'Penguineers) thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated our working alliance with teams 968 RAWC and 294 Beach City Robotics. Also, we are grateful for all of the support we received from other teams to cheer on the Blue Alliance in the final rounds. The penguins united as the Cyber Penguins Team 585 joined us throughout the day to celebrate and imitate our beloved bird, while many teams came down to the field to keep the energy high and invite all of the other teams to join in the great fun. We appreciate all of your enthusiasm and support!

Congratulations also to Teams 812, 1566, 2599 which won Chairman's, Engineering Inspiration, and Rookie All-Star respectively, and thus qualified for Atlanta. We look forward to seeing you there.

As everyone who saw the San Diego finals probably knows, the final rounds were a great and exciting contest, which continued to the bitter end. Many congratulations to Teams 330, 987, and 2034, and best of luck in any future regionals or events. We were honored to have the opportunity to compete with these amazing teams.

Also, thanks to teams 330, and 980 for helping us with parts and ideas throughout the competition, and team 2543 for providing our drivers with water during the final rounds.

We look forward to seeing teams at the Los Angeles Regional in two weeks, and then at Championships in April!

Congratulations to the Penguineers for an outstanding performance in San Diego. Your team has moved rapidly into the ranks of truly great FIRST teams.

The finals were just incredible! All of the teams involved in the final matches (Red and Blue Alliance) gave maximum effort and put on a tremendous display of robot capability, driver skill and coaching. We look forward to seeing you in LA and later in Atlanta.

It was our pleasure to help teams. The FIRST Aid Station will be in Los Angeles again for its 6th year. Please let me know what is wrong/needs improvement as I have set it up (I was unable to run it during the regional this year based on me having to drive the robot but I would pop in and out from time to time) for the past few years and always trying to improve it.

Congrats to all teams for making San Diego such a great regional. I am looking forward to Los Angeles regional to see some of the same teams and new teams.

Team 987 would like to congratulate team 968, 1717 and 294 for their hard fought victory. What an awesome set of Finals matches! We knew we would have our hands full with your alliance. A special thanks too for our alliance partners, 330 and 2034...we are proud to say we went into battle with you two and feel fortunate to have stood side by side with you guys. I haven't seen any matches yet this year that rivaled our Finals...2 of the 3 matches decided by only 2 and 4 points with last second action made for the best suspense we have been involved in (on par with our Einstein action last year).

A very special thanks to Team 1527 for their gracious help supplying a few extra batteries for our alliance...you truly represent the best that FIRST has to offer. And thanks to the San Diego Regional Committee for putting on a fantastic regional (great venue and smoothly run event). Looking forward to seeing some of the other teams at our Vegas regional in a couple of weeks and also seeing many of you in Atlanta...

Here is some data from our scouting system (through match 74 in the qualifying, and not including elims).

Average number of points each robot scored a match (the average for all robots was 14):

330 57
987 54
1717 33
701 25
1572 25
968 24
981 19
1622 18
1538 17
1388 17
192 16
1998 16
2034 15

Each robot's best matches were:

330: Match 45, 6 hurdles and a ball place
987: Match 45, 5 hurdles and a ball place, 3 lines in autonomous and 2 balls knocked off (one of each color).
1717: Match 64, 4 hurdles
968: Match 44, 4 hurdles, and 1 line in autonomous.

Average number of hurdles+places per match:
330 5.2
987 4.0
1717 2.7
968 1.7
1572 1.6
701 1.6
981 1.3
1538 1.1
192 1.0
1622 1.0

Both 968 and 1717 did not participate in any practice matches, and improved a lot over the course of the competition (968 also had 4 matches where they didn't move or got stuck due to random issues). Both will be even better at their next events. Watch out Hawaii and Los Angeles!

The same person has them, from what i've heard, they'll be up soonish.

Also, Ay2b on 980 recorded the official feed and will have that up at some point as well.

I have Match 2 and will upload it asap. They originally are huge files so I have to compress them first.. etc. And as for match 3, yeah.. in excitement I knocked my camera all over the place while cheering and footage isn't exactly in tip top shape.

But yeah, AJ will definitely get you guys the official footage, just wait up for it ! :)

WOW! Finals #1 was amazing. The blue alliance netted a 32 point swing in the last 3 seconds! :ahh:

12 pts - 1717 placing a trackball!
8 pts - 968 hurdling a trackball!
12 pts - 294 knocking out a placed trackball!

What teamwork!

That was truly an amazing regional with multiple world class teams on both sides of the finals, the red and blue alliances in the finals were so evenly matched it could have gone either way at any second

props to everyone at SD and everyone who came down and helped cheer the robots on in those last matches.

Special thanks to 968 and 1717 for inviting 294 to be part of an awesome alliance!

330, 987, and 2034- you guys were a tough alliance

This was an intense regional with many challenges.

Beach Cities Robotics looks foward to seeing 1717 and 330 in LA.

It seems that people did not see that Team 1158's racer contributed on average over 24 points per match. Gov 6 definitely put on a show. We also won the GM industrial design award.

1158 rocked the house with their racer bot! The Gov. 6!!!

Awesome machine, gyro and all!!!

Great bunch of folks with Team 1158! So fast....we even cut them off a few times by accident. So fast! One moment you're turning and avoiding a penalty when all of a sudden there is 1158 zipping by, zoom.........awesome bot! Thanks for the alliance and help!!! You ROCK!

Gov. 6 for president!

Holy cow! He's from FRC 1538.

I had a volunteer lunch with the Berggren family - what a great group of people. Oh yeah, Bill Berggren won the Volunteer of the Year Award as well.

As I mentioned earlier, I do not have the time at the moment to do a good quality edit of all matches. Jonathan Norris and Kevin O'Connor (Vikesrock) have volunteered to help with the editing. In the mean time, I have rough cuts of the 3 finals matches up: sd_fm1_rough_cut.mp4 (http://soap.circuitrunners.com/2008/movies/sdc-sandiego/sd_fm1_rough_cut.mp4) sd_fm2_rough_cut.mp4 (http://soap.circuitrunners.com/2008/movies/sdc-sandiego/sd_fm2_rough_cut.mp4) sd_fm3_rough_cut.mp4 (http://soap.circuitrunners.com/2008/movies/sdc-sandiego/sd_fm3_rough_cut.mp4)

Unfortunately, for reasons I don't know, all the audio disappeared just before match 3 of the finals, so that match and all of the closing ceremonies have no sound.

I also have a rough cut of everything from Friday: sd_friday.mp4 (http://soap.circuitrunners.com/2008/movies/sdc-sandiego/sd_friday.mp4) This is a single large (850Mb) file, which Jonathan and/or Kevin will be editing down to the individual matches.

The video from Saturday should all be ready for me to upload no later than tomorrow morning. Again, this will be a rough cut which Jonathan and/or Kevin will edit down to the individual matches.

Great quality videos of the finals. Thanks for that.

Great quality of robots!! That was an amazing finals. To be honest either of the finals alliances could have won. We were so bummed not to get into the 2nd seed - for the 2,3,4 seed to be separted by just 0.4 ranking points and in the case of 968, to go to Highest match score to get the #2 rank was the closest I've ever seen.

1388 - can't wait to see you "boot" the ball again at Davis :)

I've updated the link in the previous post to go right to the videos from San Diego.

I just saw 330's bot and our claw scoring mechanism design is almost exactly the same, especially how the pneumatic opens and retracts it.
The big difference is our drivers cant drive our robot like that. They certainly need more practice WITH other robots on a dynamic field.
I was told that 330 spends much time with their drivers in practicing for matches.
Cant wait to check it out in Atlanta.

I was told that 330 spends much time with their drivers in practicing for matches. You were told correctly. I don't know how much time Shane spent practicing last year, but I hear the way it went was: Start with full battery #1. Drive until drained. Put on charger and get another. Repeat for all full batteries. Grab the first one onto the charger and put it in. Repeat until all batteries are drained. Do something else while charging them. Repeat from beginning... Until it's time to leave. (I wasn't usually there. Something about schoolwork.)

Eric, when we went to the Cinderella scrimmage, which it was only 599 and 330 for some strange reason, your dad said they went through 8 batteries like that. He did say there was another robot playing defense, but still, Shane got a lot of practice. I would say at least double of the time he would compete with on an actual FIRST field.

330 practices like no other....

Day before champs last year we practiced with them and drained a good 10 batteries among two robots within 2 hours.

Also, trying to defend '07 beachbot with the '06 is terribly difficult.

I felt so proud. Great job 330! Can't wait for Los Angeles.

Maybe he put sleep/schoolwork on hold during build-season?

Isnt Beachbots homeschooled? I thought thats why the team is associated with the Hope Chapel. Maybe the "school" didnt have as much hw during the build season.

I wish I had the facilities they have. Though Chris told me that Hope Chapel is moving to a new location, and they may not have the luxury of all that room anymore. :( Though, 599 has an edge on one aspect, we dont have to do the ghetto lathe work. ;)

Those have homework. (It's actually through Hope Chapel Academy for the students.)

Hope Chapel moving...yes, maybe. (I'm not sure on the current status. I haven't been updated recently.) The facility they're moving into would be "huge" comparatively, so the robot team might be able to squeeze in somewhere, depending on what the various ministries want.

Aside from school/sleep that's the basic story line.

And yeah, our batteries hate me for how hard/often they get run. :D

I've been collecting a pile of broken parts from the practice bot... I'll see about taking a picture tomorrow.

This regional was one of the most intense regionals that I have been in since I joined. The finals matches we're really close and each one came down to the very last second.

I really want to thank our opposing alliance (987, 330 and 2034) for such a great match. I feel really fortunate for going against you guys, and you sure didn't make it easy for us. And thanks to our own alliance (1717 and 294) for joining us.

Best of luck to everyone in their future matches! :D

Also, thanks to teams 330, and 980 for helping us with parts and ideas throughout the competition, and team 2543 for providing our drivers with water during the final rounds.

We look forward to seeing teams at the Los Angeles Regional in two weeks, and then at Championships in April!

Why your welcome for the water!!! Your team is amazing and i know all of 2543 (well, the small 12 of us) were cheering for 1717 during the final rounds! And, admired your jumpsuits =] Hahaha, I really dont know how we got our cooler of water into the pits lol.

We were happy to be at the regional, it was a great experience for my newly organized scouting array, Though we had some driver problems, we hope to see you all in LA
(i thought it was funny, we led in average laps per match until our 7th Qualifier or so.)
1622, is also devloping a more efficient holding system to keep our ball in the lift, i especially enjoyed our match with 330 were we only lost by 10? points to 987 and one of the other top bots.
See you in LA

P.S. I had a VERY fun time planning what to do against the 987/330/2034 with one of my Alliance members with a broken bot, and one determined to hurdle :):yikes:
