Yep. A globe and a 4 to 1 worm drive gearbox.

Same thing we used, + a pot (I'm assuming you used one too). Except we didn't use a worm drive gearbox.

And it was a 8:3 reduction out of the globe.

Team 2468 is using a globe motor with Ackermann steering as well. We mounted a pot with a flexible shaft for feedback. Our steering mounts are racing go kart spindles with the KOP wheels with IFI tread mounted on them.

We can turn in a little over 5 foot turning radius.

I'm very curious as to how this feels/performs from a driving standpoint vs. normal tank-style drive... anyone with experience?

Not yet, but I'm about to find out since there isn't enough force on the back wheels to turn the bot in place. Maybe I'll keep you updated.

Another nifty design from Team 34. I like the steering concept. Should make you fast around the corners. Good luck at Peachtree and Bayou. :)

How do the controls work? Wheel and pedal? Is the steering rack control position based with closed loop? The Tie rod ball joints look swept back a bit. Was that to give you a higher Ackerman percentage?

looks impressive, very nice job

I'm curious to see how ackerman will compare to tank, crab, and mekanum (sp?) this year, and who will come out on top, control and speed wise. I'm sure cornering will be easier for you guys depending on your controls of course.

I have driven this robot (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=64389&highlight=1519), which has Ackerman steering. To me it felt a lot like an RC car.
1519 uses a steering wheel to control their robot. (not sure what 34 is using) I thought it was more intuitive at first, than a tank style robot, but it takes as much practice to get good at it.

Team 1678 used a Van Door motor attached to a bar with potentiometers for ackerman steering. What kind of program/control system did you guys use to control steering? We were having some issues with making our system match its wheel angle to the angle of our steering wheel. Of course, I didn't know about PID loops until after we shipped the robot:( , but still, I am curious.

Sorry for the delay. I had to travel to Germany during the last week and even I didn't see the final version until it was posted on our website.
