View Full Version : Looking Forward's real identiy
Greg Needel

Unless you have been living under a rock these past few weeks you may have come to notice that CarNack is no longer the only one with the future at his disposal. The threads posted by a user named "Looking Forward" are a continuation of a pre-week prediction by Dr. Joe in previous years. So far with two weeks into the season the predictions have been fairly accurate. Not only that but they are significantly researched and very well written. So I ask the question....Who is Looking Forward?
There are many here among us who have the knowledge and connections to piece together these insights into regionals yet to be played, but who has the time or the drive to bring to us what I am calling the "lazy man's pre-scouting report"
The suspects:
Dr. Joe - In the first post LF posted that they were talking over from Dr. Joe, but could this be a deception?
Karthik - This man from the great white north has had his fingers on the pulse of FIRST for years with his regional winning metals weighing more than he does. Is he the mastermind behind these predictions?
Joel J - A former member of 173 and 229 he has seen his fair share of victories and was the only person I know who called the winning alliance at last years championship he has the confidence in predictions to make bold predictions.
Rich Kressly - Mild mannered English teacher (and dork) on the outside, strategic super genius on the inside? He is an English teacher who coaches the robotics team, and has the connections through the secret network of senior mentors and his other organizational involvements. Does he have the time or drive for this.
Andy Grady - The professor himself. We have seen him give lessons about the good old days citing information about obscure teams and events past. Is Grady digging into his bag of tricks for this?
Andy Baker - Everyone knows Andy Baker but does Andy Baker know everyone? Is it possible that Baker is tapping his sales sheet from a certain company using the information to figure out what people have built. Or does he just have the superpowers to make predictions and then make them come true?
Woodie Flowers - I was reading an article a few months back about the development of a time machine at MIT. Has one of our noble figure heads made his way to the future only to bring back the news of regional wins? Sounds like a stretch but who really knows what happens behind closed doors at MIT.
Ken Patton - One of the silent types on these boards but one of the biggest names in FIRST. He has already posted in a few prediction threads, but the real reason for Ken is his secretism. If there was a FIRST secret society I bet Ken would be the ring leader...skull and bones style.
There are many other suspects:
JVN - all his bot did was drive in circles? what else did he do with his time
The Blue Alliance- They have the data can these predictions come from past info
FIRSTcast folks - Where have the episodes been? is it possible their time is given to other endeavors?
Corey Balint - a past 25 driver and analyst where has he gone, maybe he never left....
CarNack - He may be posting under an alias due to heavy paparazzi harassment during the past 6 or so weeks.
The list goes on. So lets pretend it's the early nineties and ask are ourselves not where in the world is Carmen Sandiego but "WHO IN THE WORLD IS LOOKING FORWARD"
I am sure we have some sleuths who can help uncover the mystery and by no means is this a complete suspect list. I encourage the investigation of any members that might have the gift of foresight.

Well..
When it was first posted, Someone commented on how anonymous accounts are not permitted, and then it was deleted soon after. So it has to be someone that has some type of say or has taled to someone about who they are. SO..Im thinking its a FIRSTface, But its not Ken, he doesnt have time for it :P

It's definitely not me. LF has made some statements that make some regionals appear to be weaker than others. I'm too non-confrontational for that, these days. I definitely would not want to tick off an entire region of customers.
I don't think it is Dr. Joe. He was a judge at the Kettering Rookie Regional last weekend. Since this week's summary of week 2 did not include any mention of that event, we can count Joe out. If it were Joe, he would've mentioned a couple of teams to watch for as future rookie all-stars.
I'm in the dark about this. I must say that someone is doing a fantastic job of analysis and reporting. I'm "looking forward" to the next installment.

My guess is its someone with at least some level of closeness to important people in CD... like Brandon. Other people I can think of who it could potentially be:

This is one person with in-put from several which means more than one person knows who this person is.
Last year, Dr. Joe noted that he had some tipsters. I also noticed that there was something called "Looking Forward" going on. I would suspect a group, with someone nobody expects holding the account.
It isn't me, that's all I know.

at first I would have guessed "LF" is Karthik, with his knowledge of FIRST and FIRST teams. and he always has a story to tell about the teams competing. Its always fun listening to his stories at Waterloo and GTR when he MC's.
But now that M. Krass has ruled out the list that Greg posted I have no idea.
Maybe its all of them working together

So.. who has been kinda quiet lately?*
*Don't look at me.. .I'm pushing close to 7,000 posts.
I hardly consider that to be quiet... ;)
Well, personally, I think it's M. Krass just based on how fast she shot down the first post on who the account belonged to. :D
Other then that? I have some guesses, but that account can not belong to one person alone. Multiple people, probably at least three, is my guess.

Has anybody noticed that Looking Forward's profile (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/member.php?u=25240) claims that he has made 25 posts, but when you search for all of his posts (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/search.php?do=finduser&u=25240), there are only seven? Mysterious...

I'm a much better writer than that. I have no time to know who's coming to my own regionals let alone analyze all of them every week.
It's definitely not Karthik either - not his style.
I still say Greg - he lies, he does. He has nothing better to do while in Nashville (I think that's where he's at).
I'd also put some of my money on Tom Bottiglieri as well, or some other younger mentor.

The moderators have one. I think that's a place where they can meet to discuss the maintenance of the fori to help things run smoothly. This year, I hope their job hasn't been too hard. Rock on mods!
One of these days I want to see whats in the hidden forums for myself. I think that would be pretty spiffy. Maybe some day...
In the mean time, back on topic. Obviously to post in those forums Looking Forward has to be someone with access to them on their original account. So, anyone who can veiw the list mentioned here (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/extras.php) stop and lend the rest of us a hand?

There is a link at the bottom of the forum main page, where you can view forum leaders (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showgroups.php).
It is not I as I can't remember my own team most of the time. The person that I believe it is, is not to my knowledge in the "Hidden Forums". I am a member of a few of them and believe me when I say that they are nothing special. It usually means having more work to do. There is clearly a hidden forum involved here, which, I suspect, the group of "FIRSTers All-over" have access to, and that is where Looking Forward puts together his or her posts. My suspicion is that several people write the actual posts, with the main Looking Forward person having the final say in the actual post. (A contributor/head editor kind of arrangement)

Well, there are Chat rooms that FIRSTers go on to talk about things such as regionals and webcasts. But i dont know if this is something that could be an answer. Maybe ;)

Just like how everyone usually has their own style of written handwriting, everyone also has their own styles of composing ideas and sentence structure, almost as a form of an electronic fingerprint.

OOOO i totally know how to find out!!:ahh:
but...:(
i cant....cuse i dont have access to Chief Delphi's server(s).
But you could use a flagging program to flag any posts by Looking Forward, then add a IP tracking script onto the web site server(s), and then whenever the post was submitted, you could check and see which IP addresses were accessing the site at the time. But since Chief Delphi recieves an large amount of traffic, you would probably have multiple IP's recorded.
SOOO
you would have to wait for like three or four posts by Looking Forward, then cross-reference the results. Then you could use http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm?GetLocation
to check the locatiopn of Said IP address.
then you could use yellowpages to find out who owns said address.

Why couldn't LF be a she? So stereotypical... 'childishly pouts'
In any case, I agree with the group post idea. It sounds as if all the predictions are discussed, compiled and then typed and sent by the one leader. So what we know: This person has another account on Chief Delphi. This person has much experience, with FRC at least. This person has vast amounts of free time or a vast sleep debt... Cory says this person has been named. He's been as talkative as usual, but that might take into account sleep debt. Cory- ARE YOU INVOLVED?! 'looks suspiciously'

HIDDEN FORUMS :ahh:
I've always wondered about those!
Every VB forum has at the very least a Moderator's forum - and it is trivial to add more that are visible to only certain users.
2) They asked permission before creating the 'Looking Forward' account.
And it goes without saying that the admins (and possibly some moderators) can see the full user profile, and easily determine a user's identity (or at least an e-mail and a few IP addresses). Brandon knows who it is, but I'd be surprised if he'd spoil the fun by saying who.
There is no hidden area that this is discussed. That is something that you can take to the bank.
Perhaps. The Moderators' forum is better left to business, and predictions are better handled offline or e-mail-wise
In fact, several people know this person's* identity, but I beseech them all, maintain your vows of secrecy! (It's more fun this way)

I feel as if only three people would pull this off, and two of them frequently have similar haircuts
1. Tom Bottligieri - Even with a last name that hard to spell, he has made himself a household name as a master of strategy and has deep connections to the FIRST community. However, one would expect him to hype his own team (195) more in the CT predictions.
2. Sean Lavery - Often the same haircut as Tom (in my opinion, please no one hurt me?), and well known for his insightful analysii on the forums, which have been lacking as of late. He also has no team connection this year (iirc?), giving him an unbiased look, more potentially willing informants, and possible early views of some of this year's robots.
3. Corey Balint - He predicted the 2007 Champions, captained the finalist alliance in 2006, and won two regionals undefeated in the same year. Obviously a force to be reckoned with, but for those who know him, he is hard to take seriously in a year that has spherical game objects.

i think his projections can be regional based, 1305 has put together a strong machine and yet LF fails to metion them in his predictions. thats a majore peice missing from the waterlloo section in my opinion... if you look at hsi statements in there, the only two teams that he has paragraphs for are 1114 and 2056. looking at that stat, i can project that even if karthik is giving him tips. then this person is not from a team in ontario or a team that has attended GTR
him stating the other teams that were not competing, saying 1592.. which is a team in FL. shows in my opinion that LF is a person in the midwest region of the country....

Based on the week 3 prediction, that person has way more knowledge of my team (469) than anyone else. And is way more interested in it that the average person.
I would say that Dr. Joe has to be involved one way or another because his friendship w. one of our main engineers has always made him a fan of our team and an "insider".
Other people who could have had access to information about our robot include anyone who came to practice at our facility. Paul Copioli is probably the second best informed "outsider" concerning our robot.
Anyhow... it doesn't really matter who it is. I really enjoy reading his posts!

Does it really matter who's looking forward's real identity is?
Will it make you change your opinion of his/her work?
All I know is that each week throughout the season I enjoy reading the articles put out by LF. Sometimes teams are overlooked (but im sure for good reason). But most of the time LF is pretty accurate with how that week will unfold and who will do what.
All in all thanks LF, for writing up something that intrigues so many of us.
Lil' Lavery.
Im with you on this one. He has been awfully quite this year, he certainly has the connection to people in high places, his father hasnt chimed in because he wouldn't indict his son and most importantly, we all know of the sneakyness that runs in his blood.
Agreed.
Also, just a gut feeling with me. Chiming in my vote.
:)
Although, his father wouldn't necessarily keep quiet in order not to 'indict' him...Remember that Dave, too, is a sneaky character. He may not even know! :P

At least for me, no, but it is fun to try and figure out who it is. I believe that's the intent of the thread- not to judge whoever it is, but the excitement of finding out who's behind all these predictions. They are always fun to read.
LF, whoever you are- thank you, and keep up the great work!
I have to agree with Libby, does it really matter who Looking Forward is? Sure it would be fun to figure out this "mystery" but you have to admit, he is stealthy. Im "Looking Forward"<--horrible pun....to his next post

Why would they do that? The people that can see their IP already know who they are anyway because LF had to get approval for an anonymous account.
Why would they do that? The people that can see their IP already know who they are anyway because LF had to get approval for an anonymous account.
Not necessarily. They had to get approval from 1 of those people. They did not need to get approval from all of them. For instance, Martus may have approved it. Then, he would be the only one who truly knows who it is. He is not the only one who can see his IP adress. There are many more who can. I think that covering your trail with proxies for such a trivial thing is a waste of effort. However, there may be motive there for those who truly want to keep it a secret.
At first I thought maybe Joe Johnson, but I've noticed an awful lot of 1114 and 217 references...

In this post (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showpost.php?p=720807&postcount=2) Looking Forward posted a "normal" post with the anonymous identity.
In that post he/she used a special emoticon >_<, which only one person has used on chiefdelphi. If you can find out who uses that emoticon, you will find the true Looking Forward.
(It isn't who you expect at all, but does explain why Looking Forward likes 1114 so much)

Well, here's a thought -
Looking Forward will be giving the CD community little gems and nuggets of insightful predictions for the Championship '08.
If they continue to want to do this through IRI and other off seasons and then into '09, does it matter that their identity is known?
And has anyone noticed anything about Mr. Copioli of late?

I say it's Karthik or that he's involved. He has alot of knowledge about many teams and has been around for a while. He always has stories to tell about teams. Looking Forward has alot to say about things and sometimes uses math. Karthik seems like a math guy, and has close to photo graphic memory. He also mentioned that he is expecting to see "changes to 148's robot making them an even bigger threat," in his week 5 predictions. How would he know? Steve W did mention that him and Paul Copioli talked 5 times a week. both of them have connections with team 148. 254 didn't have swerve. Cory repeatedly posted pictures of swerve parts. i believe the parts were from team 148 so i expect Cory to be involved in some way.
Also, since the 1114 teaser got alot of people fooled about things, it could prove something. That Cory, Paul, and Karthik are back for more teasing! :ahh:

I sincerely doubt that Billfred is LookingForward (assuming LF is a single person)--though I don't doubt for a second that Billfred knows his stuff. LF's presence at Palmetto does indeed seem suspicious when considering that no major teams from New England were present at Palmetto this year. I imagine they're affiliated and such--but I don't think they're the same person.
I don't consider myself a Billfred expert by any means--but that's just my take on it.

That's what I suspect. One person (I've got a guess who, but I'm probably wrong) has the account and compiles the final post, then posts it. I also have guesses as to some of his/her helpers. (At least two of my suspects have been mentioned.)

Thats it! Its Arefin!!!! You're tricky trying to pull a fast one on us like that man!
On a serious note: if you didn't know, there is a group of people collaborating for this. So there is a possibility that EVERYONE in this thread that has been mentioned is involved, but does it really matter who the identity of LF is?
Honestly, we all want to know where our robots rank and where our favorite/friends' robots rank as well and as long as we're getting that we shouldn't complain about where the information comes from (because we KNOW it is reliable) and we know that they are not doing anything that is against anyone either.
Get on with your life and please forget about who this LF is! IT DOESN'T MATTER!!! The people that need to know, already KNOW!

Probably,(as in bit your ear probably).
In the post ti says "we", statistics wise it would take too long to do with one person, and it is fairly obvious from looking at the post that there is probably more than one person working on this.

I didn't say there was one person solo. I did say something about "helpers", did I not? I didn't specify how much help, did I?
And the word "probably" was referring to my guess as to the identity of the account holder.

To anyone that wonders why we are debating who it is and claims that it does not matter: It is a mystery. It is a game. It is just for fun. I don't think anyone here actually cares who it is. They just care about figuring it out. If LF was to come forward with his identity very few people would actually care. The only good of figuring it out is to figure it out on your own.
Will the real Looking Forward please stand up!
Opps, I think I just gave my age away with that line, didn't I?

Hey everyone!
Just a heads up that I'll be coming around palmetto too to collect emails for a student-to-student email list. Email checked often is a must & so is good handwriting >_<;; It doesn't matter if you're a team captain or a misc. person (like me), so long as you fulfill aforementioned criteria :P
Is it for some nefarious purpose? What is it going to be used for?? I don't know yet :D I just thought it'd be a good idea b/c I have no clue how to contact other teams otherwise (I think there's some sorta mentor/adult email list but yea...)
If something like this exists would anyone care to point me to it? =)
Thanks!
Oh yea is anyone taking care of video at Palmetto? I think we're planning to record the streamed webcast but we're not recording locally, so it'd be good to have someone else record in case of internet traffic jams or w/e Murphy dreams up XD
This was curiously in the palmetto spot, but thats >_<;; which is different.

I would be willing to put money on the fact that this would be legal. If my assumption is correct this website/company is an offshoot of a thunder chickens project from last year (The autonomous SD card reader). It will be interesting to see how these things are implemented this year. Welcome to the AndyMark for electronics.
So now our programmer won't have to have someone hold his ankles as he leans over the wall surrounding the arena floor to download the new program?*
AWESOME!
Probably a formality, but does Cross the Road meet all the requirements as a supplier (federal tax ID, enough supply, etc.)? As good as these products seem, it'd be a shame for them not to get used because of a paperwork issue.
*Yes, this has more or less been the case in the past--at Palmetto on Thursday, our programmer had a new autonomous for us to try. We were already queued up for the match, so he caught our attention, threw over the program cable, and downloaded the new program while we shuffled closer to the field. Fortunately, the wall isn't too high, only three feet or so. I'm kidding about holding onto ankles--perhaps I should've gotten more sleep last night. >_<

From this (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=66957) post.
And now a special treat. The Looking Forward team has assembled a Top 25 List similar to that done in college sports (by the AP and others). Looking Forward contributors each cast a ballot, as well as many reputed outside sources. Sixteen total votes were cast, including those by WFAs, championship winning coaches, head scouts, former drivers, and respected CD community members. Voters were selected from around the country (and Canada) to attempt to avoid any regional biases.
So it is more than one person.....

I am the true identity for Looking Forward. If you'll notice my lack of speculation posts elsewhere (like I normally do), and my hint as to my capability to watch all the regionals on any given weekend at once, I had been hoping that someone would figure it out.
I'm flattered that everyone has responded to positively to my posts. I'm glad I could be of service to the CD community.
Everyone knows that I'm just playing, right? I'd love to know the true identity as well.

How do we know it is true? The only way I'll believe it, is if it is posted by the 'Looking Forward' account. Sorry for the suspicion, I just take things with a grain of salt.
EDIT: I thought you were serious. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

thus the white text that is on the post that says he was just kidding:DActually, it's not white...It's the exact color of the background. The color code is f1f1f1 if you want to know--see the "blank thread".
I was wondering about that... I don't think Jacob has anywhere near the time needed to be Looking Forward.

To draw on Francis Pharcellus Church:
Yes, Chief Delphi, there is a Looking Forward. It exists as certainly as science and technology and Gracious Professionalism exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest inspiration and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Looking Forward. It would be as dreary as if there were no FIRSTers. There would be no well-thought hype then, no predictions, no honest analysis to make tolerable this build season. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which robotics fills the world would be extinguished.
A thousand years from now, Chief Delphi, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, Looking Forward will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Now do you truly want to know who Looking Forward is? Or would it be best to leave the myth and mystery alive?
I haven't read through all the pages, but from what I've seen people have forgotten about one such person. This man in my mind is Mr. FIRST, and has the experience to back it up. I met him in my early years of 2004, and he is someone I look up to. This man has "been around the block" a few times when it comes to regionals and definitely knows all the big teams that there are in FIRST. My "Looking Forward" prediction is non other than the finest MC around and one of team 67's HOTtest mentors, Dave Verbrugge. I know it's you!!!!!

You noticed that too.....I have been quiet about that name block for a while now. I have also tried to con it out of Mr. Martus and Mr. Aubry but it doesn't seem to ever work;)
