View Full Version : 2008 Championship Division Predictions

I haven't seen this thread pop up yet this year, so I figured I'd start it.
I wrote up this page to make it a bit easier to keep track of changes as new teams qualify and register for the event.

The page is based on the TBA API, which automatically updates team and event info. So the answer is yes, this will update as time goes on, automatically.

wasent this done serpentine style last year though?
I'm also guessing week 4 winners haven't been added yet?

That can be changed if need be.

All of the week 4 winners are not going to the CMP event. Winning an event qualifies them to go, but they still need to register and pay. Once they have completed this process, their team will be added to the registered team list on the FIRST site, and TBA will update its data accordingly.
And hey, its just for fun!
Who can predict what division/alliance will take home the gold?

I predict Newton or Archimedes...I can't remember the last time Curie or Galileo won it all.

I'm a little bit scared of what our tentative division looks like (Archimedes so far)... there are so many amazing bots we're up against. The same goes for all the other divisions, though.

We've been on Newton for the past two years... we're kind of hoping that we get to go to Newton again just to continue the pattern.

If these are the actual divisiosns that would be pretty cool. I would love to be with a lot of the teams on the Curie list. 217 and 365 stick out in my head for teams I wouldn't be being in a division with. And plus Curie was 816's original division it'd be nice to go back.

Should these be the real divisions, I'd be psyched to be with 71,217,365,968, and 1902. All of those teams fall on my favorite teams list, and who couldn't love an alliance with the possible name of ThunderBacon? I can hear the cheers now, OINK, OINK, CLUCK!!!! lol

The divisions will keep changing as teams trickle in from Week 5 and 6 events and teams finalize their payments. These are neat snapshots, but stay tuned :)

This is going to be one :) of an event...
I cant wait for Atlanta. im so excited to actually see the teams i hear so much about on CD actually competing.
I also cant wait for our autonomous to see consistency within a competition (=
its kinda sad though that us and 1114 probably arent going to be in the same division (without serpentine)... personally id love to be with them at some point. Good bot, good drivers, good team. (replace("good", "excellent");)

Any chance you could make another Division list based on last year's formula?

Did 191 get subbed for 174? They aren't in f2 or 3 (http://www.thebluealliance.net/tbatv/event.php?eventid=143) of FLR.

yup. 191 broke during the first final round
Also: not to make more work for you but do you think you could change the shading of the winners based on picks. Something like Alliance Captains could be green, first Picks yellow, and second picks red, if a sub was there maybe orange.

The order of picking isn't recorded anywhere. FIRST randomized the alliance stations this year, and when people get subbed they stop showing up on the match lists. All of this makes it really tough to algorithmically figure out who did what. If anyone has ideas for specifically how to figure out when a team was subbed or to get the pick order, please let us know! :)

Added Serpentine sorting
http://www.thebluealliance.net/championship08/divisions.php?mode=serpentine
(There is a link on the page to change from normal to serpentine)
I will work on selective highlighting later.
Still trying to wrap my head around the 4 teams per alliance issue.
Ed, I will run the script to update the database now.

I put a link in the sidebar of Match Archives pages. Hope that helps :)
279 teams now... looks like 118 just got on the list. It's going to be fun checking up on these from time to time. At the start we were on Curie. Now we're on Newton. I'm sure we'll jump around again, but you can't help but speculate the possibilities. Anyone know how many total teams will likely to be in attendance this year? Last year there were 344.
Something just happened. Some teams are in blue or red filled boxes now

I forgot arrays index to 0, and accounted for a ghost team. Fixed it.
The TBA API is set up to refresh its data from FIRST every 10 hours. This is why you've been seeing some lag between this page and the FIRST site.
The old way wasn't fast enough so I set this script to manually invoke an update every hour. But that can change to smaller number if needed.
(The problem is that scraping for data takes a bit of execution time, as well as putting a load on the FIRST server. We don't want to swamp it with requests every 10 seconds)

I wonder if we, 1592, will get Curie this year. We have been in a different division each year. ('05-Archimedes, '06-Galileo, '07-Newton)
But mainly I hope we get in the same division as our friends 1625 and 1296 from Colorado. Maybe a return of the Orange Alliance???

Hey Tom,
This edited link leads to a Youtube page with some dude named Rick Roll singing...and not about the GWCC. Can you try again? And how do you close registration when there is still one more regional?
I believe he is pulling our leg
Well it is April 1st after all....
Not only is it April 1, but FIRST has announced that they will be in the normal place...
And NYC Regional hasn't run, so six more teams will be there at least.
I think it would be appreciated by the guys over at 1114 if this could act as a sub for their excel scouting program they put out every year.
Maybe when the divisions are finalized, you could have a page for each and then show the team number, events attended, record at each, etc... just like their program does so its all on one page for easy viewing and sortable.
first of all there 315 teams now...we have finally joined too! :)
one thing i dont understand...how official are the predictions? are they totally randomized or is there some truth in them?

I agree, i think Curie will take it because 1114 is on that division and they are bound to team up with a strong robot.

With both the Normal algorithm and the Serpentine algorithm right now 1646 is in the same division as 461, our fellow Purdue team. Now only if we could get the third Purdue team, 1747, in Curie then scouting will be that much easier with our 3 teams working together.

Now what if FIRST really went radical, and took the first group of 4 teams, and randomly assigned them to divisions. Then 4 more, random again. Rinse and repeat until all assigned.
Guy Davidson

Or what if all teams were randomally assigned to divisions, regardless of groupings of four numbers?
lukevanoort

How about organizing teams alphabetically by the first letter of their location, then doing a ABCD ABCD or ABCD DCBA algorithm? Not really random, but it would give a pretty good illusion of randomness and not require tons of processing.

Karthik posted the division list thread last year on 4/4. Champs began 4/12.
Based upon this info, one would predict the official division list will come out next week on Wednesday 4/9.
I do wonder about this "serpentine" method we've seen on TBA. I sorted the 2007 Championship list by team number in Excel, and the following pattern appeared repeatedly:
Archimedes
Curie
Newton
Galileo
Interspersed within this pattern, you'd randomly see teams assigned to divisions in the order "Newton Galileo Archimedes Curie". And down at the bottom of the list, a block of four contiguous 2007 rookie teams was given a divsional assignment that fit no pattern.
So what config will they use this year? Who the heck knows?????
You guys keep making predictions, but you keep forgetting 1477. We won 2 regionals, and our record is 30-1-0. That puts us in the top for the teams that have won 2 regionals, and right behind 1114 and 1024.

If you include 171 on the list, I think you need to include both 93 and 2062. All three of those teams were very comparable at Wisconsin and all three are regional winners.

You guys keep making predictions, but you keep forgetting 1477. We won 2 regionals, and our record is 30-1-0. That puts us in the top for the teams that have won 2 regionals, and right behind 1114 and 1024.
You're not going to be a second pick steal if you keep talking like that :p

right now both predictions have us in the same division as 1114... and i cant decide if it excites me, or scares the crap out of me:eek:

Couldn't agree more. If anything CORE was the best team at Wisconsin.

It looks like all teams are in and accounted for. So, how will they decide who goes where?

The FIRST website has 337 teams listed, but the TBA website has 339 teams listed. Odd (no pun intended;) ). But I would think that they would have 340 teams before setting divisions - since that would put 85 teams in each division. Either way, can't wait until they come out!

TBA has teams 1872 and 2070 listed that are not on FIRST's site. I wonder if they had to drop out?

Fixed it. The script is set to scrape FIRST every 2 hours. This worked fine before, but teams will be registering at a higher rate now, so I will change it.
Also interesting to note that in the pit map just released, there are 86 pit spots per division (yes, I counted two of them! - haha). So they could be waiting until 344 teams are signed up...

Speaking of the pit map (http://www.usfirst.org/uploadedFiles/Community/FRC/Events/2008/Championship/Championship%20Pit%20Map.pdf)....
It seems we've lost half the space we previously had. Nice and cozy pits indeed.

Seems that way, but we've taken over where the FTC and FLL pits used to be (seems they've moved to a new building). It'll certainly be an interesting fit with a car show next to us.
It has to be getting close. Using ABCD, DCBA 1024 and 1114 are both in Galileo. Should be one tough division if it stands. Can not wait until final divisions are anounced.

I don't want to be in that division, I fear it may self implode!
edit: after carefully looking at all four divisions (using serpentine) I have to say that they look more balanced than ever (despite the fact that 1114 and 1024 are in the same one). Galileo and Curie look epic and Newton and Archimedes look outstanding as well.

I don't know about that. I have seen empty pit spaces...so that isn't necessarily true.

Oh, no doubt. There is a possibility they won't fill it to capacity. But you never know.

If the current list turns out to be the final one, Team 233 will have been in the same division 8 or 9 consecutive years. The odds of that happening are long indeed.

They are probably not waiting for a set number of teams to register. Rather, teams on the waiting list have been given a specific time frame in which to reply to the offer to register. They need to wait for that to happen.
And as I recall, didn't they in a past year append a couple of late registrations to the end of the list, after they did the great shuffle assignment?

Once the list comes out, is it possible they may still add pending teams with unique circumstances, but NOT change the list order?
This happened back in 2005, I believe, where our Hawaiian teammate friends, 368 was the last team to be added. However, the list already came out and they did not reshuffle the list to fit them in. We were so happy that they were in our division, then got changed last minute to fill up another one since they were 1 short.
I would hate to be in Gallileo right now! That is one stacked division.

I've read a lot about 1114 winning over all... and yeah them jocks got a good bot... now if them team with 1024 again I'm sure it will be a clean sweep .
1114 vs 1024...mmm tough battle, tough call. I'm sure both team have been working on new surprises for Big A... both have awesome bots.
So much of this game is going come down to the wire and avoiding penalties.
Either way I'm sure 1114 & 1024 will be cupped up and ready for battle...

While 1024 has an exceptional robot I think their strength is in hybrid, whereas 1114 is the best hurdling machine AND has the best hybrid. There really is no question between the two.

No ones talking about the defending champs!
They win the world title, then top it off with probably their best season ever, and yet under the radar again...............
In addition to their great robot, I notice that their driving has been consistently even more impressive, despite an ever present defense on them.

I have a question-
Are the two predictions on TheBlueAlliance an assumption or is one of these two?
In other words, should i cross references and begin scouting or should i wait for tomorrow?
Thanks.

You should definitely wait. These two are only predictions.
I would love to see FIRST come along with a selection method that would throw all predictions out the window.
A few years ago (2002, 2003?), they made division selections something like this:
a,a,a,a,a, b,b,b,b,b, c,c,c,c,c, d,d,d,d,d
That would throw people for a loop, for sure.
All of this prediction stuff is silly.

They are both just guesses. FIRST used the normal algorithm until last year. Last year they basically used the normal algorithm, but they shuffled it a little bit.
Ive noticed no one is really analyzing last years shuffle or talking about possibility of a shuffle this year. We should find out the real divisions soon (I hope the suspense is killing be). Of course it is never too early to start scouting.
EDIT: Did anyone just notice it went back down to 340 teams, Who dropped?

'01 was the first year of divisions, so, that must have been '02? I remember it that & we didn't go to Houston in '03.
I would like to see a monkey thrown in everyones' wrenches. Besides I would like to be next to some of the teams we never get to see or be next to.

Just remember...none of these "super alliances" are likely to be formed.
How many of the "super" teams will be around for a late 3rd round pick? I'm guessing not many.
An awesome 2 bot tandem is more than likely, but whoever can get the 'steal' of the draft will come out on top.
Looks like they're all up. From a first glance, Galileo is pretty stacked, but the rest look very strong too. You're telling me. 217, 1114, and the ENTIRE L.A. Winning Alliance. Throw about 2 doses of Martians in there with Las Guerillas, Raider Robotix, and Cybersonics and then Divi[de] by Zero. Leaves you with Rhode Warriors, Checkmate, Delphi E.L.I.T.E., Huskie Brigade, Robowranglers, Cyber Blue, and Cheesy Poofs. Just to name a few... (The ones most will recognize...)
At least two teams in the division were on Einstein last year, but left in the semis.
